'The Devil's Submission' by Nicola Davidson is the story of Lord Grayson ‘Devil’ Deveraux and Lady Eliza Deveraux. This is a Novella with about 85 pages. Devil and Eliza came into their marriage pretending to be something they were not but pretended to be something they were suppose to be per society. Eliza is a strong women who finds it hard to be a demure, quiet, and submissive. Devil who is a part owner in the Fallen pleasure club has a few secrets himself. Devil has things from his past but also he likes to be dominated. He hides this from his wife and Eliza has been hiding her true self from him. This caused their marriage after just a short time to become to much and they separated her going to the country and him staying. Now though Eliza finds that due to her parents she has to try to give her marriage another go when she agreed to attend a wedding where he will be at.
This book did deal with some hot issue but also some hidden sad issue that had been causing some of their issues. "My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read."
Publisher's Description:
Disinherited by his parents and estranged from his wife, Fallen pleasure club co-owner Lord Grayson ‘Devil’ Deveraux long ago learned to place his trust in ledgers rather than people. But his ice-cold reserve hides the scandalous truth: he’s a man who craves pain with his pleasure, and a loving lady to instruct him.
Banished to the country when her whirlwind marriage collapsed, Lady Eliza Deveraux never knew why Grayson fell out of love with her: she’d tried so damned hard to quell her fiery self and be a proper, obedient wife. But when Eliza is forced to return to London and back into Grayson’s intoxicating world, banked passions reignite. Can a marriage built on secrets and pretense truly get a second chance?
My Thoughts:
This is a very erotic novella.
This is my first time reading this author's work. I don't read very much erotica due to the explicit nature of the content but found this a stimulating read even though I cared little for the language at times.
It was short but the length was just enough so that the language did not offend me. Some readers, however would find the language and situations offensive. This novella is not for everyone.
I gave this tale a 3.5 of 5 stars for storyline and characterization and 5 of 5 flames for heat. This is after all an erotic tale.
I received a complimentary digital ARC of this book to read and review.
This in no way affected my opinion of this title.
Final Score - 5 Devil-ish Stars!!!
Mr. Submissive? Usually, I read about the woman being a submissive, not the man. I have to say - this was a refreshing outlook! And I was all for it *thumbs up* I loved the dynamic of Eliza & Devil's relationship. It was believable and somehow complimented their personalities.
Devil & Eliza burned up every page they were on. My lawt ... I needed to read this under air conditioning conditions - my heat level was burning me up from the inside out.
This was a quick but thoroughly enjoyable weekend read. I can't wait for our brawny Scotsman to get his due!
Four stars for the writing not the content.
As an avid reader there are books you love and those you do not. I do not love this book. However, it has nothing to do with the authors writing or her way of telling a story. It is to do with the content.
Having given this disclaimer I will write the review.
BDSM, lightly handled and with steamy sex through out. A romance of hearts that have been shattered and on the way to being repaired by love. Written with pathos and emotional twinges, while having the human sides show all our folly in life. A historical romance with darkness as well as twists in an unexpected manner. Characters that show life and how we can err and prejudge others. A book that will keep you company and make you think as you read not a mindless enjoyment type of book. The author is talented in telling a story and holding your attention.
I was given this book in return for an honest review. Anna Swedenmom
This is not the sort of novel that I usually read but I did feel that the characters were well developed. The story follows Lady Eliza Deveraux and her husband, Lord Grayson Devereaux, (Devil or Dev), six months after they have separated. Eliza is forced to return due to her mother requiring Eliza to ask Grayson for money in order to save Eliza’s father from his bad investments. Eliza is constantly belittled by her mother into behaving in a certain manner, which in turn is the opposite of the person that Grayson, felt he was marrying. Eliza returns to attend the wedding of Grayson’s friends, Grace and Sin. Grayson owns a pleasure club called ‘Fallen’ with his friends Sin and Vice but it becomes obvious that he hides a secret that is destroying him and his relationship with his wife.
I did think the premise of the novel was interesting. Devil’s sexual preference is essential to the story and Davidson delves into this in a realistic manner. I did enjoy that Eliza overcame her fears in order to win over her husband and resolve the torment that he feels. This was a powerful aspect of the novel.
Thank you to NetGalley for allowing me the opportunity to provide an honest review of this book.
This story was hot! Devil and Eliza's reunion was some of the steamiest historical romance I've ever read. I really wasn't expecting Devil's secret but I liked how different it was from other stories I've read. I also enjoyed the no nonsense feel to this story. Even though it's a novella, you quickly get to know the characters and you can't help but root for them right away. Eliza's mother was so annoying and it was so rewarding to see her put in her place. If you're looking for a quick, steamy read this book is for you! I received an arc from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Goodness what a subtly written book. Yes it touches on the erotica but it is so tastefully done and it actually has an enjoyable story.
Devil hides behind a persona and he thinks everyone will hate him, more so his wife, Eliza if the truth came out, and so he makes her flee him. Eliza can't understand what happened to change her early days of marriage that her new husband didn't want anything to do with her. After all, she listened to her mother and tried to be the demure obedient wife, even though it was truly not her nature, and so she took off to the country.
However circumstances bring her back to him. Can they each discover what they once had. Maybe truths should be told.
Once I started, I really couldn't put it down, and I'm going to look up more from this author.
I voluntarily received an advanced readers copy from Netgalley
I found the book while poking around on netgalley and received an ARC in exchange for an honest review. I read the first book in this series, Surrender to Sin, in December 2016 and enjoyed it immensely. This book was equally as well done and I can't wait for the next book!
The blurb about this book sounds a bit boring: a couple found in a compromising position, forced to marry, but now living apart because of individual mental issues, struggling to reconnect and get to know each other and themselves. That sounds yawn-worthy, right? WRONG. This book takes what could be a boring story line and takes a rather hawt and steamy turn into the dark and spicy world of historical erotica. The bulk of the story is set in a pleasure club and the various scenes include (but are not limited to) inside rooms of the pleasure club, domination and submission, voyeurism, corporal punishment (for pleasure), and a whole lot more.
While the writing was, at times, a bit anachronistic (clit$, cocks, c*nts, and p*ssys abound), it is overall very well done and wasn’t so cringe-worthy that it distracted the reader in the moment. I normally have a problem with novellas, and this book is very short (easily read in a single night), but you get enough plot for the schmexy time to make sense, and, by the end, you feel like you really get to know everyone, including secondary characters. As a reader, you fully understand the mental capacities of Eliza and Grayson, so you really are rooting for their happily ever after.
I happily recommend this book to others and look forward to reading the rest of the series, and everything else by this author, as soon as it becomes available.
I won't go much into the details and just state that the story wasn't for me..I guess..
It was well written and all..
The theme was about alpha females and sub males if that appeals to some people.
Absolute trash! Could not read past page 5. Nothing but pornography! I don't recommend!
Lord Grayson ‘Devil’ Deveraux long ago learned to place his trust in ledgers rather than people. His parents disinherited and he’s estranged from his wife. Lady Eliza Deveraux never knew why Grayson fell out of love with her she tried so hear to be a proper wife like a Mom ordered her to be. Both Devil and Eliza were struggling and trying to hide their true selves from the other one. Eliza returned to London for her friend’s wedding and stayed with her at husband’s club Fallen. Once Eliza started being her true self bossy, confident, commanding self-things starting changing and Devil was enjoying his commanding, domineering wife, not the timid one she had become after their marriage, then the passion and sparks were flying. This is a short story of two who fell in love and let their secrets get in the way of their happiness when they realized they were happier with each other and themselves.
I was given an ARC copy from Net Galley and this is my honest opinion and review.
Kudos for a novella that is complete with a back story and colorful side characters that made it read like a full length book. I loved the story of Dev and his struggles that he had to overcome. It was a interesting twist in this genre. Devil Deveraux's estranged wife, Eliza helped him be honest with himself. My critique is a felt that Eliza still was in the mode of pleasing others rather than herself. I wish her story felt a little more complete.
This was a thoroughly enjoyable book. It was easily followable even though I think it's my first read in this series. I felt drawn in from the beginning and felt myself sink deeper with each passing page. The heat between Devil and Eliza was palpable and heart pounding. I very much like almost every character, except her mom. I could see reading this a few times. Love it.
Interesting and quick read, I quite liked this book. Lord Grayson and Lady Eliza have been living apart from each other because they couldn't make their marriage work. Both are too scared to let their true selves shown, they're living a lie. They love each other but unless they decide to be honest about their own feeling and shortcomings they will never be able to live happily.
So when Eliza's mother pushes her to go back to London, she has a perfect opportunity to fight for her husband. Or she can run again..... it's up to her to either make her marriage or be miserable for rest of her life.
Lord Grayson aka Devil has been disappointed in his wife. When he proposed he had a very different expectations from what their lives turned out be. May be it's too late, or may be there is still a chance that Eliza will meet his expectations of her. She wasn't like the way she is now. She was different during their courtship. But which one is real Eliza and how can he help her to embarrass her true self and make them both happy in the process...
The story is well-written and I loved the characters. I recommend this book to all historical romance lovers.
Wow! The Devil's Submission by Nicola Davidson is amazing. This is a quick read, perfect for historical romance lovers that have limited time for reading. The story is fast paced and well-written with delightful, lovable characters. Eliza and Grayson's story is full of drama, humor and sizzle so hot my kindle was in danger of melting. I totally loved The Devil's Submission and look forward to my next read by the talented Nicola Davidson. The Devil's Submission is part of the Fallen Series but can be read as a standalone. This is a complete book, not a cliff-hanger.
I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book that I received from NetGalley.
think my expectations/hopes for this book were too high and it suffered accordingly. It was light on plot - really, really light on plot - and started with most of the interesting part of the H/h relationship already in the past. It read more like a brief couple of chapters from a longer book.
There was a lot of sex, of course, and it was as steamy as advertised. a lot of the characterizations just didn't ring true for me, though, and as someone who reads a lot of BDSM romance as well as nonfic on the subject, certain aspects were slightly off to me (for example - I sincerely doubt Charlie would have sent Eliza off to use a cane in her very first scene with Grayson! Yowch!) Your mileage, as they say, may vary.
I also had some difficulty suspending belief when it came to how all the characters in the book were like "oh, you operate/live at a kinky Regency era sex club? NBD."
Things I loved: It was great to have the H as the submissive for once. The writing itself was great, cheeky and fun.
I think it's a good read for someone looking for a hot, fast, fun romp. Nice way to spend a rainy Sunday night!
the devil's submission is the second novella in the fallen series by nicola davidson, and picks up the story of grayson "devil" deveraux and his estranged wife, eliza. they had a whirlwind romance, and devil thought that he had finally found a woman who could satisfy his unique needs. when they first meet, eliza can't stop herself from seizing control during their sexual encounters. devil has a submissive streak, but he's also deeply ashamed of this, having been constantly humiliated and degraded for his preferences.
but eliza comes from a very proper english family. her parents run a finishing school that promises perfect brides and excellent marriages. and her mother keeps telling her that she needs to be a good english wife. so she starts holding back her need to control things. and the more meekly she behaves the more devil pulls back, and he believes`that he's made a terrible mistake. that he has fallen in love with a woman who cannot satisfy the deepest, darkest needs of his soul.
but this is a novella, and luckily the misunderstandings don't last too long. first eliza figures out that grayson is turned on by her domineering side, and eventually he confesses that he needs pain in order to reach total fulfillment. the fallen club provides a haven for all sorts of sexual interests and eliza is able to learn from charlotte, the dominatrix they keep on staff.
the whole story still reads as historically improbable, but the characters are engaging and the sexy bits are good, so for a quick, fun, steamy read, the devil's submission is a good pick.
This was quite a naughty book. Quite fun as well. I love that the main theme is accepting who you are and also finding someone who can love you for you. Eliza and Dev struggled and were trying to hide themselves from each other but once they revealed their desires and their true selves to each other, sparks were flying. I also loved seeing a male character that preferred to be dominated as usually the female character is the one but there was a turnabout and I really enjoyed seeing the change up. This was a wonderful quick read and now I am going to go back to read the first book.
I promised an honest review and am VERY pleased to provide it. HOT HOT HOT!!! This book is SOOOOO good! There are more in the series and truly, I want them all. You need this read!!!
