I didn't know much about this book before I started reading it but what I got was a fantastic, unique story with some incredible characters. I truly loved just about everything this story gave me. My only complaint is that the ending seemed rushed. Not bad enough to take away from the entire story but I think it could have been a bit more emotional. With that said, you don't want to miss this emotional roller coaster of a story. Scarlet definitely had her set of issues to deal with but her connection with Drake and the incredible way he treated her tugged at my heart. Drake was, well, perfect! He has his own issues to deal with but he takes the time to really get to know and understand Scarlet. Never making her feel anything but special. This one has all the feels. I definitely recommend it.
I enjoyed this book from the wounded heroine perspective. I think it was a very realistic and vivid approach to a specific condition and the suffering it causes, involving serious issues such as mental illness, addiction, homelessness or child abuse, amongst others. The description of the heroine’s symptoms, problems and pain is so detailed and intense that, sometimes, we, readers, get also uncomfortable with the sensorial overload. In my opinion Ciara Knight – an author whose work I like –, and the publisher, took a risk writing about a heroine that is far from perfect and who can be hard do love – and kudos for that! I can’t say if it is accurate or not but it sure feels believable and well researched.
Having said this, let me confess that I didn’t quite connect with the heroine, despite her horrific past and life – because I would prefer a wounded hero? Because the pain is so intense that sometimes I didn’t want to know about it anymore? Because I usually don’t like Young fiction with first person POV (but this book is well written)? Well, I’m not sure.
Furthermore, I’m not a fan of insta-attraction stories too and things happened really quickly, with the hero – who had a dramatic event in his life too – being super understanding; and all that talking and pseudo-psychoanalysis isn’t really my cup of tea.
So I’ve enjoyed this story so “outside the box of normal” – as Ciara Knight acknowledges in the afterword, and I hope the author and Entangled Publishing will continue to take these kind of chances.
Don't judge a book by its cover... that applies to this book. I was really surprised by this one. Young Scarlet is 19 years old and has had a very rough past. Rescued by Ton and his organization Straight Edge she is trying to keep her life in line while battling with serious issues. At first I thought I was not going to like this book as I dislike books about drugs, alcohol and such but soon I could not put this book down. And NO, it is not about addiction and sex at all.
I will reveal Scarlet has an illness on the autism scale (I believe) and the story how she meets Drake and helps him to save his failing bar is really touching.
Scarlet can't stand touching and loud noises and he is so sweet with her and so caring.
Great book!!
I do wish there was more of an epilogue, but maybe there will be more books so we can read how Scarlet and Drake are doing in the future.
Gorgeous and damaged. Dark and hopeful. This story was a lot of contradictions and it was the authors writing style that made it work so well. It was honest and blunt, which I think you'd just have to be when dealing with these issues - but quirky enough to make the characters real, and there was just so much hope peeking through that you never wanted to give up on them. I loved this book, and I get the impression its a series? Fab!
As a reader I am very stingy with my five star reviews. I only save them for the books I consider to be the best of the best; it has to connect with me on an emotional level. Silver Edge was almost there. I deliberated for hours trying to decide if I wanted to give this five stars. Alas, my stingy ways took over and unfortunately I was only able to give it four. But don't be fooled by that one missing star. This book was absolutely amazing, one of the best New Adult novels I have ever read. I think my biggest issue was the rushed ending, but I will get to that later.
Characters: I love these characters. It has been a while since I was really able to connect with characters on an emotional level. I loved the portrayal of Asperger's syndrome presented in Scarlet. As a psychology major I thought it was a mostly accurate representation. It may have not been perfect, but it was the best I have ever read in a fictional novel. Drake was also an amazing character. I loved his loyalty to his family. Overall, the characters were well written with fairly good character archs. I just with the book had been slightly longer. I hope the continuations of this series let us learn more about Ton because he was the only character without a past.
Relationship: The relationships all seemed real and believable. The romance between Drake and Scarlet was beautiful. While it did seem "love and first sight"-ish, it wasn't over played and the author let it build throughout the book. THERE WAS NO LOVE TRIANGLE! (Just needed to throw that in there). Also, the brotherly/sisterly relationship between Ton and Scarlet was nice too. It was great to see how much he cared about her and seeing him change as he watched her grow to no longer need his support as much.
Ending: Like I said before, this was my biggest issue with the book. Everything was going fine and dandy until the big climax at the end. Instead of letting it be resolved naturally, it felt rushed. I would have like to see this play out a little more instead of the last four or five pages saying: this happened, then this happened, then here you are. This was the main reason I was reluctant to give it five stars. I just wanted so much more from how the rest of the book was written.
Overall: Overall, I loved the characters and was able to connect with them on an emotional level. I wanted to watch them grow and succeed together. I loved the relationships (romance and other) I hope to see more of them in the future books. I just wish I could have gotten more out of the ending. The ending is what brought it down for me. While it was good, it was just too rushed.
