Cute book about friendship between a cat and a bird. Written and entertainingly illustrated by Ed Vere. Thanks to NetGalley for providing this ebook for review.
A delightful new story about two unlikely friends. Fun narrative, bright pictures and super silliness are sure to keep readers of any age enthralled!
Max and Bird is a cute story about Max the kitten and Bird the bird. They decide to be friends, but Max's plan to chase Bird and then eat him up doesn't sound like a good idea to Bird. Since they are new friends, they decide to make a plan: Max will help teach Bird how to fly, then Max can chase (and maybe eat up) Bird.
With help from the library and another bird, Max and Bird try to tackle the art of flying and become better friends along the way. But what about that tasty snack Max wanted?
With simple yet colorful illustrations, Max and Bird is sure to be a favorite of young children!
I received this arc from Netgalley for an honest review.
Bird and Max want to be friends but Max, being a cat supposed to chase and eat birds. Bird and Max decide that if Bird can teach Max to fly, he won't' chase and eat him. They visit the library (my favorite part) to find books on flying, but Cat still can't fly. Will the two friends be able to continue you their friendship or will Max eat bird?
I loved this adorable book. The message is funny and sweet. I loved how the cat and bird are able to teach each other something despite being naturally inclined to be enemies. Use this book as a metaphor for human interactions and it's even better. The best part? The message isn't in your face. 5 stars
As if Max wasn't cute enough on his own, he is accompanied by a ridiculously adorable birdie in this adventure, as they develop an unlikely friendship.
Oh, and there are pearls of wisdom too.
I'm sure children are going to love this super-cute follow-up to Max the Brave! <3
Doubtless, my favorite part of the book was when they went to the library and all the book on flying were too high to reach. Really clever bit of humor. I just wish there was more of that wit throughout the rest of the story, because aside from that it fell a little flat for me.
Rejoice - Max is back! This time Max has a new friend, Bird. They have a problem, because Max is a kitten and kittens chase and eat birds. Max thinks this sounds like a good plan, but Bird points out that "friends don't eat each other up!" This prompts Max to think things over. After some thought, they agree to help each other, because that is what friends do. I love the way Max and Bird head to the library when they have a question. Bird tells Max, "Libraries know everything." The scenes of the friends looking at the shelves and reading together in a cozy armchair surrounded by books will make you want to rush to the nearest library and collect a stack of your own reading material.
As I've mentioned before, the illustrations of Max in his books are wonderful. So much personality is packed into such a tiny body that it nearly bursts off the page. Bird with his little wings on his feathery hips lectures Max on being a friend and we can feel the force of his argument. The images of both friends flapping their arms/wings as hard as they can, eyes squeezed tight in concentration and a result of "Zilch" will have everyone laughing. But my favorite would have to be the two friends curled up asleep together and both dreaming of flying - Bird winging across the sky with Max right beside him in a superhero cape.
If you are looking for friendship stories (unlikely friends), stories of learning a new skill, or stories of perseverance, then you need a copy of Max and Bird. Of course, all those of us who are already fans of Max need one, too. Highly recommended.
Max is a kitten who does what kittens do. He wants to chase birds. When he meets Bird, he asks him to be his friend, then he tells him he wants to chase him and eat him. Bird tries to explain that friends do not do that. Kitten does not understand so Bird makes him a deal. If Kitten teaches him to fly, then he can chase him. As they research flying and try to learn, they develop a real friendship helping one another. This book is about making friends. It shows that working together and encouraging one another, helps to make them real friends. It is a cute story with simple and cute illustrations. A great book for families, classrooms, schools and public libraries.
Max is a cat who wants to be friends with Bird. . . and then eat him. Bird doesn’t think that’s a great idea, mostly because he’s so young he hasn’t learned to fly yet. They make a deal to postpone the eating and be friends for a while first.
They go to the library, which has a whole section on flying. . . but it’s so big they can only reach the bottom shelf. Too bad they can’t fly. . .
It took so long to finally fly that Max forgot all about eating his friendly snack, and wouldn’t have remembered had Bird not been dumb enough to remind him. But then Max wouldn’t have had his existential moment. . .
It’s a rather silly story; I can just picture little kids saying, “That doesn’t make sense!” Compared to most others, this artwork is rudimentary.
Max stories are amazing and this is the best thus far. The adventures and themes for each book always a delight and we enjoyed the bird character. The pictures are always some of my favorite in the simplicity and yet unique style. Looking forward to the next Max story!
We all loved this book, we loved the understated illustrations, the sweet characters, the story itself and that it was a trip to the library rather than googling information! It appealed to a wider age group than I expected, and the moral of the story was gentle but clear. As usual there was a little humour, and a little twist - another triumph x
My kids love Max the Brave and we were excited to read Max and Bird together! It was very cute, and simple enough for my youngest to read, but still made my oldest laugh out loud. A nice edition to the Max collection!
Ed Vere's "Max" books are delightful and "Max and Bird" is no exception! With themes of friendship and perseverance, along with adorable illustrations, "Max and Bird" is sure to thrill both new readers as well as fans of Vere's previous works.
This book seems quite unlike other children's books in that the illustrations are much more simple and brightly-coloured, as opposed to the intricate illustrations I am used to seeing. However, in the case of Max and Bird, I think this really works! The simplicity allows the focus on the story, a charming tale of Max that initially wants to eat bird, until he learns what friendship is. A lovely tale about friendship which sends a great messages to kids. I'll be looking out for more Max tales!
Simply adorable from start to finish. I am partial to this book series because I have a grandson named Max. I purchased the first Max title for him as a gift at his shower, and it's his big brother's favorite book to read to him.
I plan on adding this one to his collection, and I'm eager for more!
Do friends eat friends? That is the basic story here. Well, that and friends help friends learn to do things, such as flying.
And in the end, friends don't eat friends. They would rather watch them fly, now that they have finally learned to do so.
Max and Bird is a cute story of friendship for the picture book set.
Thanks to Netgalley for making this book available for an honest review.
I automatically have to love a book that says “libraries know everything”. But even without that line, you can not help but fall in love with Max. He knows he should chase and eat birds. And Bird knows he should be chased and eaten. But they strike a deal. No eating, until Max teaches Bird to fly. An interesting prospect for a cat. A fun and heartfelt book about friendship.

This book is downright adorable! I loved the illustrations and the story is very reminiscent of Narwhal and Jellyfish, which I am a huge fan of. I highly recommend this to anyone with a love of fun and funny stories!

This is my first Max book, I have heard of him before, but never had the chance to read a book about him. So I was fairly excited when I was approved for this book.
In this book Max makes a deal with a tiny little bird. Not only that Max also learns a valuable lesson.
I really liked Max, he was cute, and I could understand that he may want to chase (and eat) that bird. That is what cats do. So I was quite curious about what would happen after the deal. Would he still chase, and eventually eat, the bird? Or would they become good friends. Of course I won't spoil the ending, haha, no. You will just have to read, but believe me, it was adorable.
I did think it was hilarious that the bird came to the cat about flying lessons. It was fun to see them figure out flying, and trying it out both (even though the cat had to know he can never fly like that). It was great that they never gave up, that they were really determined to just keep on going. To just keep on trying.
The art is pretty basic, it did fit with the story, but I am not really impressed with it. Not really my favourite art style.
But all in all, I would recommend this one. It is a funny picture book, and I had fun reading it.
