Thank you to NetGalley for the privilege of reading North of Happy, by Adi Alsaid. Dealing with the death of his brother, Felix walks out of his graduation party in Mexico and flies to Seattle to honor his brother's dream of visiting a famous restaurant. The brothers had grown up watching the Food Channel and dreaming of being famous chefs. Making a reservation at the restaurant leads Felix to first love, self-realization, and reconciliation with his family. I loved this book.
Adi Alsaid has done it again. He managed to create a world of characters and keep my attention in it, feel for the struggles of the characters, and long for my family.
I don't read many books with a male narrator, and the ones I do usually include him being a gay character, so it was different for me.
Carlos' struggle to deal with the death of his brother and fight for his right to be happy is one what many have faced, and it was a nice change seeing a character cope with the death this way.
This book was a little cliche, though. I pretty much knew the ending from the beginning, but that didn't deter from the story at all.
I am hungry for more.
Maybe I just watch way too many romcoms...
