The relationship between Sloan and Jude was interesting and I loved reading it. All of the mafia/family intrigue went mostly over my head, as it seemed to have been dealt with more extensively in previous books in the series. Sloan was well-written as she came out of her shell and into her own, and Jude had a lot of learning to do about love.

Forbidden Promises is the fourth book in The O'Malley's series. While this book can technically be read as a stand-a-lone, there are a lot of continuing plot from the previous 3 books that continue into this one, it might be hard for some to connect all the dots and line the families together. I can't say it takes away from this book's sole plot, but it may slow down your reading overall trying to put things together.

This book is probably my least favorite so far in the series. I rated it at 4 because the book was intense and the overall drama and mystery continued on, but I felt there was more of a focus on the sexual relationship between Jude and Sloan that was necessary. Don't get me wrong - I enjoy some great sex scenes, but I just felt that overpowered that plot of the book and this series.

Sloan is the mousy and obedient one of the O'Malley's. She finally had enough of her family's business that she left without anyone knowing where she was headed. She found herself living across the country and next door to Jude - a man who seems to want to be left alone.

Jude - I am not even sure where to start with him. He leaves me confused and with some contradictions. He doesn't get himself involved with other people because his job forces him to leave immediately after everything is done - he doesn't set roots anywhere. So when Sloan makes him take notice more than he ever has in anyone, that leaves him feeling out of sorts. With that being said - as rugged and dominating as he comes across, I had a hard time believing his actions were real. Near the end, they became more believable, but in the beginning it was difficult.

My only gripe was the relationship between Sloan and Jude - it just seemed too forced. I like that Katee did address the whole first relationship part and Sloan trying to decipher is it love or lust - that did help things. But again, it just didn't seem believable the whole time.

I have to say that the redeeming parts of this book are the action and drama in this book. It's what I have come to love and expect from this series. The O'Malley's are involved in the Boston Mafia along with the Sheridan's and their shared enemy - Dimitri. There's a lot of suspense and action and I absolutely love it. And the overall plot just keeps getting better!!!

As you can tell, I didn't really tell you much about this book itself or how things transpire. This is one of those books where you really can't say one thing without giving the good stuff away. So it's best just left unsaid and let the reader find out everything for themselves.

Overall, it's a different take on how the other books played out, but it's still good. I have my own issues with it which may not bother others. It's a good read.

If you’re not reading Katee Robert’s The O’Malley series, you’re missing out, because the O’Malley family is downright enthralling. They’re one of the most powerful families in Boston, and they’ve unapologetically built an empire that often skirts the law. Corruption and danger infiltrate every aspect of their lives, but Sloan O’Malley is the innocent of the family, choosing to stay away from the illegal pursuits and turf wars. She’s decided to permanently exorcise herself, so she flees Boston for the West Coast without leaving a trace. She borrows a house from a friend of a friend and is starting over, but she’s inadvertently landed back into the gritty, violent world she just escaped.

Jude MacNamara is a hit man, and he’s living next door to Sloan and looking for the owner of her borrowed house. He doesn’t know who Sloan is or if she’s connected to his target, and he gets closer to her to scope out the situation. His assignment becomes much more personal when they meet. The chemistry between this bad boy and good girl is electric and intense, and Jude can’t prevent himself from wanting Sloan, even knowing there is a chance he might have to hurt her. They are drawn to each other like moths to a flame, but their situation is treacherously complicated and appears unsolvable. Secrets, lies, revenge and family loyalty could tear them apart. Buckle up and hold on, because Forbidden Promises is breathtaking romance with heart-stopping action and unexpected twists and turns.

Forbidden promises is the fourth book in the O'Malleys series by Katee Robert. I liked it more than the third book, but I still had a couple of problems with it.

It seems I was right and each O'Malley will marry a person from a rival family. Jude is the last MacNamara. If the name doesn't ring a bell, I will remind you how he is connected with the other families. The Sheridans aka Callie's family killed every single member of Jude's family and he is alive to live the tale because they didn't know his mother was pregnant with him. See? Our hero in this novel wants to kill the heroine of the first book. I cannot say that I don't understand why he wants to do that, but it wasn't the most pleasant situation for me to be in. I wanted him to get his revenge, but I love Callie. Speaking of rival families can you tell me how Dmitri will be redeemed? He is the biggest threat and not one of the nice guys, so I am wondering how much he can redeem himself in order to be with Kiera. I cannot believe I am rooting for them, but I do. They have a lot of chemistry and I don't like the idea of having to wait for their story. Aiden's story better be good.

I feel like the more we get into the lives of the O'Malleys the more we see them falling apart. They are a united family. Instead, they fight and give ultimatums that separate them more and forget what made them a family. I am hoping to see them unite again because it saddens me to see them like that.

Jude and Sloan are a nice couple. Their relationship doesn't involve a lot of drama which is nice and they are a good match. Honestly, with everything else that went on, my focus wasn't exactly on them. I liked seeing how Sloan was slowly coming out of her shell. She is no longer the sheltered girl we knew her and is trying to live her life hiding. I didn't like that her job and everything else was forgotten after they stopped being used as a plot device. The side characters at the dinner were completely forgotten.

June on the other hand, needs to let go his revenge if he wants to be with Sloan. The question is will he choose her or the revenge?

New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Katee Robert delivers the next book in her sizzling O’Malleys family series, hailed as “The Godfather meets Romeo & Juliet.” FORBIDDEN PROMISES features Sloan O’Malley and her mysterious new next-door neighbor, Jude MacNamara.

Forbidden Promises is the fourth book in the contemporary romance series, called The O’Malleys by author Katee Robert. I have read several of Katee’s books in the past and really enjoyed the steamy romance, including book one in The O’Malleys. The Marriage Contract, so I couldn’t wait to continue this series. I enjoyed getting to know some of the O’Malleys, and this is a series that I really want to go back and read books 2 and 3, which I missed. This series follows the three powerful Boston families- the O’Malleys, the Hallorans, and the Sheridans.

Forbidden Promises follows Sloan and Jude. Sloan is an O’Malley, and Jude is out for Sheridan blood. If I thought The Marriage Pact was intense, the stakes were notched up even higher in this book. While, I was able to figure out what was going on, I feel like I would have had a much better idea and insight into the characters, if I had read this series in order. I think I would recommend new reads stick to the reading order of the series. YOu will get to know the characters better that way. Either way, I love the intense mafia-esque drama that Katee Robert has created. These books are so addictive.

Bottom Line: Forbidden Promises is great for fans of steamy political/mafia-esque romances. If you like family dynamics and drama galore, with great characters this is the book for you. Plus the romance is really excellent! And I totally loved Sloan and Jude. I thought they were both excellent characters.

It was a interesting romance book. The mob relationships/background is not really my thing.

This is a voluntary review, I do not get paid for this,

I struggled with this one a little bit, and it took me some time to figure out why. The other books in the series are in Boston, and they take place in the underground/Crime setting. This one, for obvious reasons, moves the action to another location, so the switch from Oregon to events in Boston seems a little jarring at times. I understand the reasoning for the way it was written, and overall it does work, but it took me a second to switch from Oregon to Boston as I was reading. It's possible this is just me, but I think the juxtaposition of Boston events and how hard Sloan was working to get away from Boston conflicted a bit for me, if that makes sense.

That said, I really enjoyed the parts that were Sloan and Jude, and I think we can all relate to wanting to make our own lives away from our families and on our own, although most of us don't have reasons that are as compelling as hers.

I liked the evolution not only of the story but of the attachment with Jude and Sloan, and I believed their reactions to the events that took place. Again, I have a book in which to totally discuss the events, I will have to spoil a plot point, so I am going to have to be vague and just say that I believed both of them, and their reactions.

I do recommend this book overall.

I did not read the first 3 books in the series and to get the most out of this series I recommend reading them in order. This was an intriguing story-line with strong, engaging characters & is well-written. I now have to go back & read the beginning of the series.

One of my tests of a good series is that when you get the next book, even if it is months or more later, you're immediately immersed in the action again, reconnecting with the characters and overarching plot. That's exactly what has happened with every book in this series for me and this one is no different in that respect. The series is concerned with the O'Malley mob family from Boston and the rival families.

This story focusses on Sloan O'Malley who has always seemed to be able to slip into the shadows and stay in the background in the earlier novels but this is more about her endeavouring to escape from the expectations and dangers inherent with her life as the daughter of a leading mob figure. Her father has little time for his daughters, mainly seeing them as potential marriage partners he can use to create political links with other families to boost his own spheres of influence, without any regard to their feelings or wishes. Sloan knows she's probably about to be told who she is to marry and has convinced her brother to help her escape only to unwittingly attract the attention of her new neighbour, Jude MacNamara. He's an assassin out to revenge the slaughter of most of his family by Colm Sheridan but he can't resist the sweet innocence of Sloan. When others come looking for her he's going to have to determine how he can protect her - or sell her to the highest bidder!

This is another fast paced, hot, action packed thriller with great characters and more details added to the overarching story. Both main characters are on journeys of self discovery, finding things out about themselves and each other, questioning and reevaluating their decisions and plans as the story progresses. There's plenty of intrigue, suspense and danger from start to finish and it is a real page turner that I have no hesitation in highly recommending. I know others have read this one as a standalone but I think you'll appreciate this one even more if you've read the earlier novels first.

I received a copy of the book via NetGalley and chose to read and review it.

Another addictive addition to the O'Malley series!! Oh my for all things Jude MacNamarra!! Sloan O'Malley has definitely met her match when she ends up as his neighbor. But as always, the connections are not far from danger and everything Sloan is trying to escape from seems to be on her tail.
Katee Robert does a masterful job crafting this series with all the twists and turns that never cease to keep me on the edge of my seat! This is a must read series for me with family drama, suspense, mafia and so much steamy goodness to boot! Can't wait to see what happens next!!

I absolutely loved Sloan and Jude's story!

Sloan has been the quiet one of the O'Malley sisters, but as things become more dangerous and complicated between the rival crime families, she became increasing worried about her own future. Her father is a ruthless man who wouldn't think twice about trading her for his own gain so when her brother Teague offers her an escape plan, she jumps on it.

Now she is all the way across the country on her own for the first time and realizing exactly how sheltered she had been. But to her credit, she finds the backbone that was beaten into submission by her life in Boston and she starts to function in life like so many others take for granted.

Jude has lived his entire life with one mission only: make the family who slaughtered his father and brothers pay with their lives. He has dedicated himself to being the best in his field, so his social graces can be a bit shoddy and his suspicions are always in overdrive. When Sloan stumbles to his door in error when she first arrives in Oregon, she is struck first by his stunning height and attractiveness only to be immediately put off by his completely surly attitude. The constant dichotomy of attraction and irritation doesn't lessen either.

Jude is the first to admit he is not a good person, but he has made it his credo to avoid killing innocents and recognizes innocence in Sloan from their first encounter. For the first time he can recall, he struggles with his conscience when it comes to completing his mission. He can use her to obtain information on his target but it just feels wrong. His mixed signals light a fire in her spirited Irish temperament and it is like waving a red flag in front of a bull. Game on baby! Sweet innocent Sloan discovers she likes his brand of dominance at times but she refuses to let him steamroll her outside the bedroom which just makes him want her more. When they each discover the other's true identity things get are bound to get messy though.

Suddenly Sloan has a crystal clear understanding of the reasons her oldest sister acted the way she did when she turned her back on the family, and the foundations of everything she thought she knew are rocked again and again. Sloan left Boston to escape a future of being used as a chess piece, but when her family and their Russian enemies track her down she wonders if anyone can ever truly escape. Jude is no less thrown by new information that puts a crimp in his plans and he finds himself seriously considering how to keep Sloan safe if they want a future together.

I loved how the petite spitfire could tame an undeniable badass even a little bit, and his devotion to her was unquestionable once he gave himself permission to consider an alternate path for his future. Jude is still a guy who has done bad things, but when he turns that skill set with his single minded determination to keeping Sloan both safe and happy it made my heart happy! Seeing Sloan go from a timid mouse to a fiery, capable woman on a mission taking on her family and the rival families to protect the future she has always wanted with a man she never dreamed up was pretty amazing too. Oh and did I mention they are just downright hot together??!!

There are some interesting possibilities for the future that come up including one for Dmitri Romanov that has me positively intrigued! Well done Ms. Robert, I can't wait to see what comes next!

What’s it About? Sloan O’Malley is trying to escape the violent life she’s always known and with the help of one of her brothers she’s finally free, or so she thinks. When she meets Jude MacNamara she knows he’s anything but trouble free but she still feels an intense attraction to her that he returns. Jude just wants revenge for what was done to his family but Sloan is complicating everything and when their pasts catch up to them they have to work together to survive and decide if they want to risk everything to stay together.

Overall reaction to the story? Katee Robert delivers a yet another top notch mafia romance where there are no good guys and the only way to stay alive is to stay one step ahead of your enemies. I couldn’t get enough of Jude and Sloan. They were a powder keg set to explode from the second they met. From start to finish, Forbidden Promises is one hell of a story and by the end my emotions were upside down, inside out, and ready to go again!

Describe the hero in five words: Dangerous. Bossy. Intelligent. Broody. Complex.

Did you like him? Yes. He was sexy in a “I’ll kill you” kind of way.

Why? Jude is a hardened killer, someone you wouldn’t want to meet in a parking lot in the day much less a dark alley at night. He was dark, deadly, and at the same time he had a rough charm about him that pulled me in from the start. Jude had so many layers to him, each one more complicated than the last. He’s definitely one of the biggest bad asses in the series yet when it came to Sloan he was helpless. I loved the way he developed as a character just because of Sloan’s presence in his life. Did I mention he was sexy? And dangerous? But mostly sexy. In a dangerous sort of way.

Describe the heroine in five words: Wounded. Intelligent. Brave. Complicated. Determined.

Did you like her? Yes.

Why? I’ll be honest, I was worried that Sloan was going to be the dullest of the women in this series. Calista was set to lead her own family, Carrigan was the ice queen with a backbone of steel, and Olivia was a tough survivor. Sloan on the other hand was the mouse. The one who ran when things got tough. So she had an uphill battle and more than a few shadows to step out of. I identified right away with Sloan’s need to have control over her own life. Boy did that hit me right in the chest and definitely softened my attitude towards her. I loved how even though she was terrified and had never been on her own she wasn’t going to stop trying to take control of her life. She was quieter in her strength than say her sister Carrigan but that didn’t make her any less formidable. Sloan really grew as a character from the first page to the last and that’s the kind of growth I like to see: The mouse turning into a lioness and taking zero prisoners.

Let’s talk about the romance: Jude and Sloan set everything on fire with their hot-to-the-touch chemistry! I expect a certain amount of heat from Katee Roberts and she has never disappointed me in that regard and in this case, she really set a high standard in sexual chemistry. On first glance Jude and Sloan don’t seem like the ideal anything. He is a bad boy in EVERY sense of the word and when he first meets Sloan she is so out of her depth that it’s almost a forgone conclusion that Jude will run roughshod over her, except he doesn’t. Sloan finds her backbone throughout their story and lays down the law with him making sure he understands they’re in things together. To me that makes a romance more intense, and definitely hotter. Grab some ice water because these two are smokin’ hot!

How about that supporting cast? Not gonna lie, with how Sloan felt about her sister Carrigan’s “betrayal” of the family by running off with the enemy, I didn’t think Carrigan and James (Still my #1 couple) would be seen again but nope, Sloan got the closure she needed. Especially since she found herself in a similar situation with Jude which provided her with more understanding of where Carrigan was coming from. Almost all of the O’Malleys make an appearance and things get a little shaken up when Sloan reveals she wants Jude for her own. It will be interesting to see how that will affect things in the next two books if at all.

Click It or Skip It? Click It. The entire series is amazing but Jude and Sloan definitely kick things up a few notches. Any books that come after Forbidden Promises are going to have high goals to meet.

I loved loved this book. I've read all the books in the series, and they are all good, but this is my fave. I didn't think I was going to love Sloan because of how shy she seemed in the previous book. OMG, I loved her. She was fierce in a way that was actually sweet and gentle, and she was just as kick a$$ in her own way. I love Jude! So alpha but honorable and gentle in very appealing way. Jude and Sloan love story was just great, it sparkled with the perfect blend of angst, heat, emotions, and heart. I am looking forward to Aiden's book, but I am DYING for Dmitri story. I so recommend this book and series.

So we are back with another O'Malley series book, by the extremely talented Katee Robert! And quite frankly I have been dying for this book! Why? Because, we FINALLY get to know Sloan! She is the quiet, biddable O'Malley. So I was on tender hooks to see, just what her story is…but I NEVER thought she would go against her family!

Now because this book is SO jam packed (Like all Katee Robert's books are), with delicious details, it would be hard for me to not reveal GIGANTIC spoilers! But I will say, Sloan leaves Boston, with the help of Teagan! But then she goes and falls for the one man she shouldn't (other than the Russian bent on revenge, that is), a hit man, with a heartful of revenge!

Now this book will alternately keep you on the edge of your seat, and your panties wet! Oh my goodness, the author really knows how to get your blood racing! And if you are looking for a book without sex appeal!?! This ain't the one for you!

The authors writing is superb; and her stories just blow you away! Truly! I read hundreds of books a year, but it honestly takes a real talented author to blow your mind, as much as this one has. The character detail and development is amazing, and I absolutely LOVE the author for introducing me to all of these amazing character like Sloan and Jude….though I cannot wait to find out what happens with the "wild child" Keira and what messing around with "The Russian" will do!

Forbidden Promises is an amazing book, that will keep you hooked to the O'Malley saga! Which is why I give it 5 stars!

While Forbidden Promises can be read as a standalone, I wouldn't go so far as to say easily read as one. As with any well developed Mafia Romance series, the MCs may change from book to book, but there is a continuing storyline with plenty of past events that you will need to be caught up to date on. While I was able to differentiate between the different members of each of the warring families, and their connections to each other, it took me some time to get there. Honestly, that did slow down my reading speed. Once I got situated, I was firmly entrenched with this forbidden love story and the surrounding hate-filled violent vendetta.

The O'Malley family members had taut expectations set on them from birth. Love matches weren't to be accepted, a union to bolster family power was the custom. Anybody who resisted what was considered to be their duty was shunned and exiled. Associating with "the enemy" was another unforgivable black mark against you, though her brother Teague's marriage to Callista Sheridan formed a new alliance with their previous adversaries.

Twenty-four-year old Sloan has always been the biddable and pliant sibling. She's not what you would view as a tough heroine in the beginning, but breaking off from her family's Boston empire and striking out into the unfamiliar world was the most courageous thing she could have possibly done. She's completely naive and inexperienced. Not only with men, but making her own decisions. With surviving on her own. She had no idea what kind of dangers already lurked in Callaway Rock, where she began this new, independent chapter of her life.

Living right next door to her was Jude MacNamera, the last remaining member of his family. After his father and brothers were murdered in cold blood by the Sheridans, his mother met a misfortunate and tragic death years later. Now, nothing will satisfy his fury except sending those responsible to their own untimely fates.

Jude is not a knight in shining armor, in fact, quite the opposite. He may have standards about killing innocents, but that doesn't take away from the fact that he's a stone cold assassin. He's self-serving, because there's no one in his life to care about or make him weak. He's also a man of many skills, and as smart as a whip, but his people skills leave something to be desired. He doesn't regret the path his life has taken, because it aimed him directly towards the direction he sought. Nothing else was allowed to rule his heart or conscience. After having everything of value ripped away from him, he has nothing left to lose except the one thing that gives his life meaning. Revenge.

A quickly igniting passion led to an unexpected wrench in both of their plans for the future. And their break from the reality of their past was sadly, short lived. They were hunted, as several players in the game moved their chess pieces into position. These two fought to survive together by any means necessary, and their emotions made an unexpected entrance into the equation. She helped him see the possibility of a future free from the ties that have bound him for his entire life. And he doesn't know what to do with that.

What started out as a purely physical relationship soon became much more. Personally, it seemed rushed in my opinion, considering the progression happened after sleeping together for about a week. Jude became very possessive and protective, which felt abrupt compared to his recent behavior. Not that his growing respect was unwelcome, but they seemed to be moving at light speed.

The odds where overwhelmingly stacked against these two. Dmitri Romanov, the head of the New York Russian empire was playing puppetmaster in the Sheridans' destruction. Jude was backed into a corner by the Russian, and forced to make the most difficult decision of his life. Love or Vengeance. Even if he chose the woman he was falling for, it could be his ultimate downfall. On the opposite side, Sloan's family was unpredictable and underhanded. She discovered that not everyone was to be trusted with her back turned. Because she could easily have a knife plunged in her back when she least expected.

This story was action-packed, and had an elaborate storyline that had me hooked the deeper I dove in. By the end of the book, though I felt somewhat detached from the two MCs, I did grow to respect and like them. I just didn't love them as I should have. I was fascinated by all of the interconnected story arcs, particularly Aiden and ex-cop Charlotte Finch's tease for the next addition to the series. I would definitely read their book Undercover Attraction in November. If you're already a fan of this series, this will be a must read. If not, you could start here as I did, but be prepared to have an adjustment period. Recommended for fans of mafia lovers, and redeemable heroes.

My absolute favorite in this series! OMW I want a Jude! That is final. I need him. Holy hotness. This book gets the fires going as much as watching Stephen Amell working out on his Salmon Ladder does! Sloan is a girl after my own heart. She is fighting so hard to be separate from the family business and finally has a chance. But nothing is ever easy in the O'Malley family. If you have been following this series this book will ratchet up the tension and feed you even more suspense. If you are just tuning in you will love it anyways and want to back track to read the previous books. There are so many story lines thrown out in this book for my imagination to go crazy. I am near panting for the next book. I need to see where this is all going to go. The sexy scenes are molten hot. The plot is seriously in depth and the characters are highly complex, even more so since I have 'known' them from the beginning. I have loved Jude and Sloan's story the most I think because they have been removed from all the pressure but still a part of it. I very highly recommend this book and certainly the series.

FORBIDDEN PROMISES is the fourth installment in Katee Robert’s contemporary, adult THE O’MALLEYS erotic, romantic suspense series focusing on three warring underground families of the Boston’s Irish mob, and the Russian mafia run by the Romanov family. This is mercenary for hire Jude MacNamara, and Sloan O’Malley’s story line. FORBIDDEN PROMISES can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from previous story lines is revealed where necessary although I recommend reading the series in order as there is an ongoing premise throughout.

Told from several third person perspectives including Sloan and Jude FORBIDDEN PROMISES follows the forbidden romance between Sloan O’Malley and Jude MacNamara. Sloan O’Malley is on the run from her own family, and a father who is determined to marry off his daughters to men of his choosing. Sloan knows that both of her sisters have defied their father’s demands, and our heroine is determined not to fall ‘victim’ to her father’s ways. Hiding in plain sight, Sloan will fall for her neighbor, Jude MacNamara, never realizing that Jude’s history with the Irish mob is deadly and dark. What ensues is the building relationship between our leading couple, and Sloan’s determination to protect the family she loves from a hired gun.

Jude MacNamara is h*ll bent on revenge, hoping to take down any surviving members of the family that destroyed his life. But meeting Sloan O’Malley puts all things into focus when Sloan reveals the truth about the people Jude is hoping to destroy.

The relationship between Sloan and Jude is one of instant attraction between a woman on the run, and a man keeping secrets about his intentions and goals. Their quick building romance is spicy and sexy; our heroine was a virgin until Jude MacNamara came into her life. The $ex scenes are intimate, provocative and intense.

There are a large number of secondary and supporting characters including most of the O’Malley clan: Teague and Callista O’Malley (The Marriage Contract #1): James Halloran and Carrigan O’Malley (The Wedding Pact #2),; head of the O’Malley caln Aiden O’Malley, and their sister Kiera, as well as the return of Dimitri Romanov who continues to seek vengeance against the O’Malleys and the Sheridans. There is a quick introduction to former police officer Charlotte Finch. Charlotte and Aidan’s story is next in Undercover Attraction.

The world building continues to look at several underworld families, and sins of the past: revenge, vengeance, betrayal and loss, and the interconnected lives for everyone concerned.

FORBIDDEN PROMISES is a passionate story line; an intense and fated romance; a suspense filled look at two people whose destinies collide on diverging paths. The premise is energetic; the characters are colorful, spirited and tenacious; the romance is rebellious, impulsive and captivating. FORBIDDEN PROMISES reveals the depths of familial honor when one of their own falls in love.

Another great read in the O’Malley series! Katee Robert has once again crafted a tale that has the edge and grit of a mob story but also delivers a passionate and intense romance between two people who have no business or intention of falling in love, especially with each other.

Both Sloan and Jude were great leading characters. Sloan is trying to create a new life for herself and discover who she is as a person outside the realm of the O’Malley family. Jude has spent his entire life seeking revenge and, after meeting Sloan, he too is trying to come to terms with who he is and how he might not quite be the man defined by the revenge he has spent his life seeking. I loved watching Jude and Sloan grow and struggle with who they were, who they are, and who they want to be. There was no removing the influence of their mob families from these characters, but watching them carve out an existence within the realm of their family ties was so well written it was easy to look past the bad and root for their happy ever after.

And of course, no good mob story would be complete without all the interactions within and between all the mob families. This ongoing storyline was nicely woven into Jude and Sloan’s story and helped move the overall series arc forward without seeming forced. There are so many plots and sub-plots happening that overlap and are inter-related and the author does a nice job keeping the reader informed of any necessary back-story when needed as well as setting up some things for future books.

Although this can be read as a stand-alone, there is definitely ties to the previous books in the series so it would probably be best enjoyed by starting the series at the beginning, but, as I mentioned, the author does do a really good job filling in the necessary back-story, so starting here will still make this a great read.

As usual, Katee Robert has created a delicious, dirty-talking alpha hero (although I’m finding it hard to call a hitman a hero!) who also has a lot of heart and a heroine who has an inner-strength that resonates and grows with the story. This is a very fast-paced read with lots going on, but the story is put together seamlessly and keeps you moving right with it.

This is definitely a must read for anyone who likes their romance with a bit of edge – and it will most definitely have you wanting to turn the pages to see what happens next while admonishing yourself for not taking your time to savor the story!
