I was immediately captivated by the plot and premise of this book, and it held my attention until the very end. The book was also very well-written, making it an easy and enjoyable read. The characters were believable, flawed, and realistic, and this book provided interesting insights into their relationships.
I had trouble getting into this one. Some of the characters’ decisions just didn’t gel with the characters’ nature as the author described them. Some of it was hard to believe, especially the ending. The parts concerning Olive mostly seemed written in a juvenile style. The author does do a good job of describing the characters’ grief and their struggles following Billie’s disappearance. And it certainly did keep me guessing right up to the end.
A well written and enjoyable mystery, just a bit slow-paced for me. Will definitely read more by this author!
I received an arc of this title from NetGalley for an honest review. I attempted to read this at a time where there was a lot going on in my life and I could not keep up with all the twists and turns. That being said, I know people who really liked it and our copy at the library is often checked out.
This is one of the best thriller/suspense novels I have read in a long time! The twists and unexpected surprises in the novel kept me reading late into the night. I loved the character development and the POV of the characters. Definitely a must read!!!
Great story by Janelle Brown. Really thrilling read, great characters and an enjoyable story. Highly recommend to others!!
Watch Me Disappear is a good suspense/thriller/family drama. It was a perfect vacation read for me! One year after Billie Flanagan disappeared while hiking solo, her husband Jonathan and daughter Olive are still reeling from her death. Because they don't have a death certificate, they can't fully move on with their lives. And Olive is having visions of Billie making her think her mother is still alive somewhere, As a result, Jonathan starts digging a little deeper into Billie's disappearance. What he finds makes him question whether he really ever knew his wife.
While I am not sure the characters were "likeable," they were definitely interesting. And between Olive's visions and Jonathan's sleuthing, readers are kept guessing as to whether this story is a straight mystery-suspense or if it is delving into the paranormal.
I recommend to readers of suspense and thrillers, to those who liked Gone Girl and Girl on a Train.
You guys. You have to get this book! It is so much fun and I really enjoyed reading it. It’s a perfect summer read. Make sure you read it in snitches but can’t finish it all at one sitting; you will find yourself dreamily trying to decide whether or not Billie is someone who would walk away from a loving but imperfect family. Is she or isn’t she?, you will ask yourself while cooking dinner. And what is up with Olive’s visions? you will ponder as you do laundry. (or whatever you’re up to these days; I don’t know your life. With any luck you can ponder this poolside!)
I am almost reluctant to review this novel because I got a review copy on my kindle several months ago, and by the time I got around to reading it I had completely forgotten what attracted me to it in the first place. Without a back cover synopsis to remind me, I came to the book completely open and not knowing what to expect. But I am going to have to tell you a little bit, right?
By the time the novel opens, with a description of a happy family day at the beach, we already know that Billie, wife to Jonathan and mom to 15-year-old Olive, is gone. She disappeared while on a solo hiking trip in Desolation Wilderness several months earlier, leaving her husband and daughter reeling from grief. All that was found was a shattered cell phone at the base of a cliff, and a hiking boot stuck in a mud flow.
Things are not good in the Flanagan home. Jonathon, a workaholic, quit his job to write a grief memoir, but he spends more time drinking bourbon than writing. Olive, a student at an exclusive prep school in Berkeley, begins to see visions of her mother, and carry on conversations with her. She becomes convinced that her mother is alive and that she wants Olive to find her. Meanwhile Harmony, Billie’s best friend, is buzzing around being helpful and brushing up against Jonathon in the kitchen, which Olive simply can’t handle.
Olive begins to hunt for Billie. But when cleaning out Billie’s closet, Jonathon discovers some things that prove Billie had been lying to him about hiking trips with a friend for over a year before she disappeared. Is she really alive? Did she purposefully abandon them? Why did she lie to them? He meets people from her previous incarnations who report that she abandoned them completely; first college friends Harmony and ex-boyfriend Sidney, then high school friend Cheryl. But while she might leave Jonathon, surely she wouldn’t walk away from her daughter? Olive’s visions are getting more frequent, and her dad doesn’t know what to do with them either.
Part of what makes this book so great is its reflections on life and love. When we look at others, how much of what we see is what we want to see? How much of a longterm relationship–marriage, parenthood–is based on the past and not the present? In what ways do we really know one another?
There are many twists along the way and I’ve already told you enough. Watch Me Disappear is a book full of believable, likable characters with an enigma in the center; you will try to figure out Billie Flanagan, but you just might fail to do so. You might think you know where things are going, but then again you might be wrong. In case you couldn’t tell from my opening paragraph, I really enjoyed reading this book. Go get it! I am pretty sure you will too.
really enjoyed this book! wasn't my typical read, but i loved it nevertheless! i loved following olive and her emotional state, and i could imagine olive very vividly.
A thrilling novel of lies, loss, and unanswered questions. Oh and visions of a deceased woman. This page-turner leads you on a journey to find out what happened to Billie. Did she really perish in the wilderness? Or did she exact her own disappearance? Find out the truth as Billie's family searches for answers.
I received a Net Galley ARC for an honest opinion. Wow, I wasn't sure where this book was taking me. I liked reading from Olive's point of view of the disappearance of her Mother Billie and her visions that seem to be her Mother talking to her giving clues. You also get the Father, Jonathan's, post of view on the disappearance of his wife, Billie. You are not sure what happened to Billie but one thing is certain. She has taken off and no where to be found thus is presumed to be dead. As they wait for Billie's death certificate to come through so they can go on with their lives, Olive and Jonathan's lives begin to unravel. All in all I enjoyed this book.
The story and premise seemed interesting, but the book ended up not really being for me. This isn't necessarily a great genre for me, which could account for my lack of enthusiasm.
Such a good read. Throughout this entire book, I was flicking between two possible scenario's and both were wrong. This was how I knew this was a good book. This is not really a thriller but more of a family drama with plot twists galore that provided suspense. there were parts that were a bit slow however it did pick up. I read till the end as I wanted to know what happened to Billie, a good read.
Watch Me Disappear by Janelle Brown Book Review
I found myself engrossed in this family’s rollercoaster ride. Billie is this magical and mysterious woman I wish I could be. Sometimes, it would be nice to have that kind of power to walk into a room and command it.
Billie's daughter, Olive, is still searching to find herself. At the same time, she is searching for her mother. Billie's husband, Johnathan, continues to have his head & family wrapped up in turmoil following his wife's disappearance. Janelle Brown's characters are so relatable, especially Olive’s teenage stubbornness.
THE VERDICT
I am Really Into This book! Watch Me Disappear is an irresistible maze that had me guessing which turn to take till the end!

Special thanks to Janelle Brown, Random House & NetGalley for providing our copy in exchange for an honest & fair review.
I'm generously giving this book 3 stars. The first half of the book was great! The building of characters and the mystery surrounding the disappearance of Billie had me turning pages, however about 2/3 of the way in I began to groan with annoyance! Improbable scenarios, predictable plot, detail that wasn't relevant to the overall story made me sigh out loud. Eventually it turned around again and ended well, if not predictably.
When this novel opens, a woman named Billie has been missing and presumed dead for almost a year after disappearing on a solo hike in the wilderness, leaving behind a grieving husband and teenage daughter. The book is told from the alternating perspectives of the husband and daughter as they both start to question whether she in fact died, and who she really was. Despite this description, this book is not really a mystery or thriller at heart, much more of a psychological character study - but there is definitely plenty of suspense. Billie herself comes across as unlikeable, even from the perspective of her grieving family members. Definitely an interesting book, I really enjoyed it.
I really enjoyed "Watch Me Disappear" by Janelle Brown. I found the book to be well written and much more than a mystery or thriller. There were plenty of twists and turns. However, the novel was also a commentary on marriage and questioned how well do we really know each other. I found myself really hooked and really wanting to know what happened to Billie. I would highly recommend this novel and am looking forward to Janelle's next book.
It's been a year since Billie disappeared leaving her husband and teenage daughter wondering what happened to her. As the court date approaches where she will be declared legally dead, questions about her disappearance come up all over again.
This is a bit "Gone Girl" without all the violence and with some twists and turns that are a bit surprising, but not as shocking as the author probably intended. An engrossing suspense novel with some gut-wrenching scenes between the father and daughter that's well worth the time, but not one that's likely to stick in your psyche like "Gone Girl" does.
I wanted to read this book because it was compared to Big Little Lies. After reading it, I don’t think it lives up to that comparison, but it was an enjoyable read.
I loved the unraveling of all the secrets and the twists and turns. The ending is the best.
I did get a little bored in the middle of the book. The portion where the husband, Johnathan is writing his memoir of his wife, Billie did not interest me. There was too much focus on past memories that were not always significant to the story and I just didn’t enjoy reading.
The visions the Olive has are somewhat unbelievable, but the author does try to give some explanation for them.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book courtesy of NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Although a little slow at times, this storyline certainly kept me guessing until the end. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
