This is really more a set of stories FOR people who love dogs, rather than ABOUT people who love dogs, but is nonetheless an enjoyable read. Anyone who loves animals will enjoy it.
According to this book, there’s a new definition of “amazing.” It now includes things that are merely cute, somewhat humorous, or even mundane. Then there’s the other part of the title; quite a few of the entries were about dogs, not dog lovers.
For such a short book, this took forever to slog through. There’s some snark, thankfully; occasionally they’ll bust out a really funny one. But there’s not even close to enough to make this a worthwhile read.
The high point for me was seeing my favorite actress mentioned. Katherine Heigl has a number of charities that, among other things, pay to spay and neuter, move dogs to no-kill shelters, and do their best to find homes, especially for Chihuahuas.
Okay then, let’s address the Christian elephant in the room. Each of the 101 is followed by a quote from the bible. . . which has absolutely nothing to do with the chapter, or even with dogs! They’re obviously included just to wring a few bucks out of the credulous. And the use of the word “amazing” in the title is such obvious clickbait they should be penalized for it.
The book seemed randomly thrown together. Random dog info ( often wrong and often recycled throughout the book) and lots of random Bible quotes that have nothing to do with dogs. Not into sneaky Christian proselytizing so it came across as quite offensive. Not for me, i'm the wrong target market.
This is a fun book: it is clear she loves dogs and their stories. The chapters are short and concentrated and lovely. At the end of each chapter is a nice little saying, but I could do without the Bible passages at the end, I prefer my pet stories to be non denominational.
There is rich history between dogs and their owners; their quirks and weird ways they live together. Short, sweet vignettes keep the pace quick and the attitude light.
A very enjoyable read, and who could go wrong with that subject matter? She does a lovely job and I am happy I got to read this book. Thank you!
It has been done before, but that doesn’t make 101 Amazing Things About Dog Lovers less likable. The book contains an array of short passages, each taking on a different topic or focusing on a fun about dogs (not about the humans who love them, but more accurate titles have been already been taken). Don’t expect a heavy scientific tome. Instead 101 Amazing Things About Dog Lovers is a light read perfect for sharing with younger family members. The title is classified as Christian because it contains a short bible quote after each “fact” about dogs. It’s a nice idea, but many of the quotes don’t really fit with the text. Though the quotes are good, it appears their inclusion is more for marketing than content.
The book is nicely done, but it is more acceptable than exceptional. There is nothing that makes it stand apart from the myriad collections of dog facts currently on the market.

I received a copy of 101 Amazing Things About Dog Lovers from the publisher and netgalley.com in exchange for an honest review.

I like reading books about animals and that's why this book caught my eye. I thought the picture on the cover was cute.
The 101 "amazing things" are varied. There are informational topics about caring about your dog, petsitters, doggy motels, etc. There are the histories of dogs and different breeds. There are stories about famous dogs like Lassie, Toto and Rin Tin Tin and not-so-famous dogs. There are offbeat stories like people who leave their wealth to their dogs.
After each story, there is a tidbit of information or quote followed by a biblical quote that didn't seem to have anything to do with the story or information tidbit or quote, which I found strange. So I checked back on the classification of this book and it's classified as "Christian", which I also found odd since it's a book about dogs.
