I have mixed feelings about this book, and ultimately feel it wasn't the best effort. Maybe it was going in with high expectations, based on the summary here on NetGalley. I liked the theme of lies and their consequences, but ultimately didn't think much of the book overall.
I usually like books with unlikable main characters, but this novel is one of the exceptions. It's just too much of a stretch for me to root for a character who constantly sleeps around, neglects his children, treats his mother like she's a nutcase, but also spends the entire book whining that his ex-wife doesn't want him back. He didn't really have any redeeming qualities. There were also way too many unrelated plot lines fighting for importance, which caused the resolutions of each one to feel rushed.
I received a free copy of this book from NetGalley for an unbiased review.
I'm not entirely certain that the book's description does the plot line justice. Yes, Jesse Few is a sales man who does peddle some lies, but he has a particularly strict moral code about how far he'll push things in business.
He also cares deeply for his family, and suffers with all the ways he feels he has failed them over time. Some real, some imagined on his part. He attempts beyond all else to do right by his mother, children, and ex-wife, despite being well aware that some of his efforts are a little too late.
The characters in the book are well developed, and McCondichie does a good job at keeping the pace moving so readers stay interested.
This was a pretty good one. The lead character isn't ALL that likable, to me anyway, but it was ultimately an enjoyable read. (Amazon reviewed).
Well written with believable characters. I throughly enjoyed this book it left me wanting more so I will be following the author
I received an ARC from NetGalley. I really wanted to love this book. I liked it but it just felt odd. I couldn't really connect with any of the characters. The premise was one I can totally understand since I am in sales and have survived the recession. It probably would be a great premise for a movie though.
Believe this or not but this book is a "chick" story which is why the 5 star rating. It is an almost perfect model for young women to read about rather than experience, painfully experience. The main character is full of lies for everyone almost all the time. Oh, my ex-husband comes to mind. The upside of reading this book is that I got a view of what a constant lier lives with all the time, the drama and excitement of getting others to buy into his lies in that it's a rush and addictive, the definition of a sociopath. He didn't care much about other people or the impact of his lies until he hit one more crisis to lie his way out but it didn't work the way he wanted it. It was his mother who was in crisis and she "woke" him up to her life and he began to "see" her and understand her whole life. Did he redeem himself after all the self-inflicted Job's troubles he encountered? Not by the last scene that includes more lies than less. Perfect story and ending for teaching young women AND young men what happens to others when the lies just keep on flowing.
I have never given a book a bad rating but this book I am so sorry I couldn't get through so I can't give a review other than I believe that it should go back to the editor and rewritten a little. Could not get into the characters at all.
I just could not connect with the characters. Couldn't find any humor in his Mom at all
I was blessed enough to be able to download a free ebook copy of the book from Netgally using their "Read Now" option(Meaning that I didn't have to be approved by the publisher first) in exchange for my honest review of the book which is as follows:
The concept of main storyline in my personal opinion was a familiar one(a man who seeks to be the hero of his own life, especially given the fact that he knows/accepts that he is/has been kind of an ass to a lot of people) however the characters bring a freshness and a heart to it that made me care about the majority of the characters.
A couple of the subplots dragged on/didn't make a lot of sense even though they kind of fit into the main storyline, two of which seemed to not really get finished. The ending kind of felt rushed I wish that the author would have spent a bit more timportant with it than he did on some of the subplots. Overall I personally rate this book a 6 out of 10 because I liked the characters so much.
This was an interesting read and while the story of Jesse is/was interesting, I must say I didn't "get it". He seemed to always be missing the mark and even in the end, you are lest to wonder if he even gets his last relationship straight or is succesful at anything. He has led to himself for so long, one wonders if he can ever really grasp the truth about himself and the people around him.
This book was at first hard to get into and i did not really like the description of the book. However I continued on and did enjoy the book. Lots of different stories within the plot. My thoughts of the characters changed throughout the book. At first i did not like Jesse then I started liking him. Oddly at first I thought Jesse was a woman! Sad reading about the past for his mother.
