I will not be posting a review on goodreads because I was unable to enjoy this book and do not feel comfortable leaving a negative review.
This was very different from what i expected more focused on conspiracy than vlogging. I was expecting a book more focused on talking and/or discussing vlogging in negativer and scary aspects of how save it is, how it can be dangerous to show quiet a bit of your life on the internet and all of those aspects...
It wasn't that really.
It was still a good book though and a decent crime book.
I could not get into this. The writing and characterization felt very amateur to me and I was quickly bored by it.
Unsure how I have already read this book......
A typical crime novel where everyone including the police keep secrets and have troubled pasts. The addition of social media and the surrounding publicity are the only features to distinguish this book from other crime novels.
Not particularly unique or clever enough to stand out in this genre.
Ruby Day is a young vlogger who goes missing in suspicious circumstances. The novel is primarily a police procedural that details the investigation into her disappearance revealing the seamier side of social media and a the old boys' network incorporating Police and Government.
I enjoyed the initial chapters of this book; the detectives were interesting, if not particularly original, and the plot showed promise. However, by about a hundred pages in it seemed to stall. After the initial disappearance there were no other hooks to keep up the pace. It picked up again in the last fifty pages, but by then I'd ceased caring about the protagonists. There were also a couple of unsatisfying dead ends which would have been more bearable if the main plot was more eventful, but they just served to make me more frustrated.
I'd read another book by this author but I'll wait until they've honed their skills.
Twisted, frightening story of how easily predators can enter the lives of people online. Good police work, with complex detective interactions, demonstrates how politics sometimes interferes with police apprehending criminals. The frustrations the detectives' experience are intertwined in this police procedural and very realistic. Dangerous sociopath and all too realistic view of online perils and just how vulnerable you can be.
The stilted short sentences of this book made it difficult to read. Did not enjoy.
This book was absolutely fantastic! This thriller kept me engaged from the first few pages right until the twist ending! I loved the way this book focused on the new phenomena of you-tube stars and how their lives are truly impacted by the level of notoriety they have achieved. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in a great thriller.
Cut to the bone by Alex caan.
Ruby Day has dissapered. She's a vlogger and posts videos on you tube on make up tututorials and words of advice. Kate Riley and her team are on the case. Then a video gets posted of Ruby running asking for help. What is going on?
Absolutely fantastic read with brilliant characters. I loved the story but so confusing. Had so many suspects. Was full of twists and plots. Highly recommended. 5*. I voluntarily reviewed an advanced copy of this book from netgalley.
Very good read, really enjoyed it. The plot kept me engaged all the way through the book, it was hard to put down. I enjoyed the story line and the characters, a solid 5 out of 5.
A story full of twists and turns- makes you winder what is real! Believable characters although they are not all likable.
After reading this book I asked myself: ok. Apparently there is a market for short internet movies where you talk about anything you like. Followers will come and you will earn money because of the ads you run on your vlog. Why don’t I have one? Why am I sitting here typing reviews that will no doubt be read, but I will never know by how many people?
I know why. The author makes it perfectly clear that vlogging is new and hip and can be very dangerous. I’m from a generation that doesn’t want to share every aspect of daily life with unknown viewers. So, let me just share with you my feelings about this book on paper ;-)
I liked the book but sometimes I had the feeling that the author started to stray from the path the story was taking. The main characters Kate and Zain are very well outlined, but Ruby, I don’t know. For me, she stayed just who she was: an unknown person talking about herself. Sometimes it was hard to follow what was going on between all parties and to be honest, I didn’t like the end very much. However, as I said, it was interesting and very well written so I can recommend it.
I received this book from NetGalley.
I received this from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. This was a mystery within a mystery. First, you have a case of a missing girl that is a major vlogger. Second, who is DI Kate Riley. She is leading the team on the case, but she has many secrets of her own. The story itself was interesting, but there were times it just dragged. Too much detail on the internet for my personal taste. At this point I think we all realize the dangers of hacking. Overall still a good read, and the backstory of Kate was very compelling.
If nothing else, the story here is timely: At the heart of it all is "vlogging" - video blogging - plus more technology tricks for ferreting deleted information out of computers and cell phones than I ever dreamed existed. All in all, it's a very good debut novel, for which I thank the publisher (via NetGalley) for a copy in exchange for an honest review.
It begins when Ruby Day, a wildly popular vlogger, is reported missing by her distraught parents. The case lands at the feet of detective inspector Kate Riley, detective superintendent Zain Harris and the rest of the team from their newly formed department. Things take a nasty turn when a video is posted online depicting Ruby begging for her life, putting the detective team on high alert with the realization that they've got to move fast - but there are few clues to indicate where they should go next.
As team members put their technology talents to work, they begin to uncover information that points to Ruby's ex-boyfriend, vloggers who are being exploited by a less-than-honorable management company, misdeeds by a corporation that would be out of business in a heartbeat should the facts become known and dastardly cover-ups at the highest levels. Meantime, Ruby and Zain must deal with emotionally draining personal issues of their own - issues that simultaneously bring them together and drive them apart. In fact, that's true of several of the characters here; not only are they so seriously flawed that it's hard to tell the baddies from the goodies, but they're so many in number that I had a tough time keeping them straight in my aging head.
As the plot moves along, the investigation sort of splits in two directions, one of which is resolved (with several twists and turns) and the other not so much. Also left hanging are those complicated issues Kate and Zain have been dealing with for years, making me suspect this book may be intended as the start of a series. Whether or not that's true, bloggers, vloggers, gamers and technology buffs should be happy with this one (for the record, count me in two of those categories). And if I'm correct about a series, count me as one who'll be happy to sample the next one.
I was excited when I saw this book offered to reviewers on NetGalley. Finally, a thriller set in the world of social media, especially Youtube, which could mean a very interesting, new and exciting plot potential. Instead I ended up with mixed feelings about this novel.
The characters Zain and Kate, were well developed, maybe a little too well developed, because it took too much time spent on their set up, and their thoughts, rather than to get to the point, and some action. Keep in mind that thrillers and mysteries drive (at least for me) on tension, suspense and when necessary action. Yet, we were brought in to witness the inner conversations and struggles of two detectives, as they are approaching a case of a missing YouTuber. And that is when it got really boring.
There was so much potential there, and eventually, it got to a little bit faster pace, but it just took too long. Frankly, if I would not have made the commitment to review this book, I most likely would not have finished it. The competition in this genre is fierce, littered with strong books, that have faster and more thrilling plot developments and execution.
I have read a lot better thrillers over the last few months, and even some romance novels that showed more action, and suspense than this book had.
Excellent introduction to this author for me. Definitely worth reading more books. The scene was set the disappearance of a loved and popular YouTuber (very current). Taking us through the opinions of psychologists, detectives and all the others that like to invade operations including money problems. The plot twists and turns and is surprising at parts not predictable like some.
This book was a little confusing to me. I definitely wanted to know what happened next, but it took me a while to get through it. It seemed to introduce new characters frequently in new chapters only to discover the newly introcuded characters weren't extremely important to the story, making it difficult to keep track of who's who. I also felt that the book spent a lot of time leading us down one path only to find something completely different at the end. Yes it was definitely a twist ending, but it made the rest of the book seem...unimportant. It was a great story though I definitely wanted to read all the way to the end to see what happened and I was truly surprised.
4 and 1 / 2 stars
Ruby Day’s parents call to the police to report her missing after just a few hours. DCI Riley, an American transplanted to England with a mysterious past, gets the call at home in the middle of the night and is puzzled as to why PCC Justin Hope is involved after such a short period of time. Justin Hope is a police commissioner/politician and a man no one seems to like. She calls on DS Zain Harris to go see the parents. Zain senses something is off with the parents, but he is unsure what. The young woman is of age and Zain knows too that is has been far too short a time to report her missing.
Roby is a vlogger. That is someone who posts videos of herself on the internet. She gives advice to teenagers on food, clothes and lifestyle choices. She has some two million followers.
Her parents then receive an upsetting video. They demand that Riley and Harris get out there and find their daughter.
To understand what happened to Ruby, the team needs to understand vlogging and its impact. They delve into the internet sensation.
I really liked Riley and Zain. They make a great pair and the rest of the team is interesting as well.
This is a very well written book and it’s a nice and surprising debut thriller. I am anxiously awaiting Mr. Caan’s next novel.
I want to thank Netgalley and Skyhorse Publishing for forwarding to me a copy of this wonderful book to read.
Alex Caan’s writing in this book is gripping from start to end. The book starts out interesting and attention grabbing with a story that is well written and engaging. Caan also wrote complex characters who are fascinating with varied backgrounds amidst the tense and suspenseful plot.
The social media theme was a good commentary on how the world has become, the fame people seek, the public life newer generations have become accustomed to and the consequences of it all.
The chapters are so short it makes it that much easier to get through the book but you don’t really need the extra help because you’ll want to keep reading to find out where the story is going as Caan releases everyone’s secrets a little bit at a time to keep your attention.
The conclusion came just as I was about to pass out from lack of oxygen as I hadn’t realized how long I had been holding my breath. Caan did a impressive job so if you like gritty crime novels then you’ll be up far into the night glued to these pages.
