This is an ebook reprint of the famous book about a young chess play, Josh Waitzkin, written by his father. Yes it is the story that was made into the movie of the same name, but the book is so much more.

Josh was young when he learned how to play chess and soon outstripped his dad's abilities. It was clear early on that Josh had both talent and passion for the game. He learned and progressed in a variety of places: lessons from a noted teacher, chess clubs, games in New York's parks, tournaments, and even a period in Russia during the Karpov-Kasparov matches.

The book is as much about his dad's reaction to his son's talent and what it carries along with it as it is Josh's story. And that's the key to the book's power. Many parents, myself included, wonder what we would do if our kid showed great talent at a young age. How would we handle it? Would we make the child one-sided, sacrificing all to the talent? Would we strive to keep the kid well-rounded? Would we treat him as an adult or as a child? Would we be threatened by the talent? Waitzkin gives us insight into all these questions as well as into the fascinating world of scholastic and professional chess.

Pub Date 07 Feb 2017

I am voluntarily reviewing s copy of Searching for Bobby Fisher through the publisher and Netgalley:

In 1984 Fred Waitzkin’s Son Josh was seven years old, in September of 1984 he signs a contract with Random House to write about his Seven Year old Son Josh the Chess Player.

At six Fred began teaching his Son Josh to play Chess, by seven he was a stronger player than his Father.

As a child Fred had thought Chess was boring until the Summer of 1972 when Bobby fisher played Boris Spassky.

One day when Josh was playing Chess in the park he caught the attention of the manager of the Manhattan Chess Club, Pandolfini .

Josh travels with his Father to Moscow to learn more about Chess. While there they met Mark Dvortesky.

In the Fall of 1986 Fred flies to California in search of Bobby Fisher.

This is the story of One Young boys gift for Chess, and his Fathers support and encouragement.

I give Searching for Bobby Fisher five out of five stars.

Happy Reading
