The premise of this book really interested me, a pastor loses his job and goes off on a voyage of discovery, but unfortunately, the structure and writing style wasn't for me. He comes across quickly as a bitter person, the type who shrugs and waits for sympathy, but without any immediate reasons for giving him your concern, he doesn't get it. The writing style is both choppy and long, often a thought doesn't seem to be completed before a new strand appears and then processes and journeys towards action and awareness points are overly explained. However, I did read through, skimming some parts, and found several scenes and observations which were well written and insightful. I think the different vignettes approach allowed the overall story to avoid the necessary cohesiveness that would have had to have adhered to to pass the bench. Which is a shame, as it could have made it a good book if the writing were more disciplined. I expect most readers who enjoy this book will see it as a guide book or reference book rather than a novel.
