Superdad adventures continues, this time around young Jonny is attacked by some old rogues, goes to fair and meets Damian Wayne. The stuff at the fair is cute, the bit with Damian is a pint-sized version of BvS (but actually good) and the an island full of dinosaurs.
Verdict: Get it. This a bright and fun bunch of issues that really position this a family book to rival the best of the Fantastic Four.
This book was not what I was expecting and I am pleasantly surprised. I’m not a huge fan of Superman, I prefer Batman, but the stories included in this volume were fun and well written. The artwork was superb. I am definitely going to try to get volume one and any other sequel volumes I can find. It’s really peaked my interest. It’s refreshing to see Superman written and drawn in this way and I like the family side to it also. A pretty good graphic novel to lose a few hours too.
Peter Tomasi, Patrick Gleason, and Doug Mahnke are some of my favorite current comics creators. Superman Vol. 2: Trials of the Super Son has admirable range; Tomasi and company deliver four jam-packed stories in seven issues, which feels very full for a trade. There there is plenty tonal difference between them, too, from the big monsters of the Dinosaur Island story to the comedic superheroics of "World's Smallest," to aliens and horror in the Frankenstein story. The one-shot "Our Town," a little story about the Kent family enjoying the evening at a town fair, is funny without being corny; the small-town characters feel very fully realized and Jorge Jimenez draws some wonderful expressions.
I was not a fan of Volume 1 on this series, so I won't be reading or reviewing this
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for allowing me to read and review this book.
'Superman, Volume 2: Trial of the Super Sons' by Peter J. Tomasi is a series of stories about the domestic Superman, which is actually better than it sounds.
This new Superman is a husband and father. There are 4 different stories from Superman 7-13. Clark goes to the fair with his family and promises to stash the cape. This gets tricky when he discovers a plot to rob the ticket booths. Clark and Jon find themselves trapped on a strange island full of dinosaurs, and discover one the best cameo appearances of the year in comics, in my humble opinion. Jon is kidnapped by Damian Wayne and Bruce and Clark decide to try to get their boys to work together. Lois applies for a job at the local paper and gets involved in a marital feud between Mr. and Mrs. Frankenstein.
I like this Superman a lot. Superman as a dad is such a good place for this character to be in. He's not a perfect father and he struggles like the rest of us. Jon is a pretty typical kid, while decidedly not being very typical. I loved the story with Damian and Jon. These four stories felt fairly complete. The writing is tight. The art is very solid.
I received a review copy of this graphic novel from DC Entertainment and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this graphic novel.
This title continues to be the shining star of Rebirth. The Kents' family dynamic is perfection and Clark and Jon's relationship is the heart of this series. Plus, we get alternating top tier art from Patrick Gleason and Doug Mahnke.
This volume contains a bunch of shorter stories. First up, Superman takes the night off so the Kents can attend the county fair. Then we get a story where Clark and Jon are accidentally transported to Dinosaur Island. Next up, Damian and Jon finally meet and Damian's not a fan. So their dads force them to work together. Lastly, we have a team-up with Frankenstein.
If I had to give a recommendation for one DC book to buy, this would be it. This creative team is absolutely killing it.
Superman may be on the title but this is more a Superman family book. Superman and family visit the local county fair. Next, Superman and Superboy get a flying trip to Dinosaur Island while finishing up a science fair project. Then Jon (Superboy) and Daimen (Robin) tangle and have to learn to cooperate which takes a long while. Finally, Lois and Superman tangle with an interstellar criminal alongside Frankenstein and his Bride. Plenty of action, plenty of laughs!
Superman, Volume 2: Trial of the Super Sons takes the character of Damian Wayne several steps back and does little for Jon Kent. Instead of a deadly borderline sociopath ninja, we have instead a spoiled little rich kid. Instead of a young teenage version of Clark Kent/Superman, but with a Kryptonian father to help him along the way, we have a timid young Superboy who just wants a friend.
If this is a team-up that DC is hoping to move forward and capitalize on, then it needs desperately to be re-thought.
ARC from Netgalley.
A fast-paced collection of stories, highlighting Jon coming into his powers and dealing with his new status as Superboy, where:
- A trip to the county fair where a promise of "no Superman" is quickly broken when a robbery breaks out.
- Jon's science project goes crazy and sends father and son off to a world where dinosaurs still rule, a WW2 soldier lives on after fighting in the war. The three fight against a cyber-gorilla and his army of feral animals.
- Nobody and Goliath get involved when Jon meets Robin for the first time! Sparks fly, dads collide, and the boys are sent off on a quest to learn to work as a team, creating the "Super Sons".
-and finally, Frankenstein shows up taking Lois' new boss hostage, revealing her to be Kroog, an alien criminal. The Bride of Frankenstein shows up to claim the bounty too, and a fight ensues.
I'm really enjoying the "family man" aspect of Clark and Lois and to watch a superhero truly develop is a nice change of pace from most titles. Looking forward to seeing the hijinks of "Super Sons" when it debuts.
Recommend.
While this title could hardly get any worse, it's almost as galling that the improvements here are in such baby steps. The first story in this melange of ideas is too throw-away, the second is too stupid by far but at least looks good, the third too badly drawn and lurid – and completely NOT what you want outside of a kid's-only comic – before we close with a character that was new to me, the DC Frankenstein's monster. His tale contains so much WTFery before settling into the hum-drum, and really doesn't inspire me to return. If, as I have read, this is all filler building to some flipping event title it had better pull all stops out to be worth it, for this is an at-times painful mess of childish nonsense and ill-thought-through stories that really needs to improve, and fast.
I received a complimentary copy for review purposes
A great read for both Bats and Supes fans. Of course, being a Batty girl, I prefer Damian to Jon. The artwork is as always stunning. It would be wonderful to see this made into a movie the way that Son of Batman was.
The story telling was clean and the panels are done enough that they would be clear enough for story boards. This would be preferable to the path that Zack Snyder is taking the movies down at this time.
4 stars, truth, justice and the American Way out of 5
I requested this from Netgalley and DC Comics for two reasons. First of all I wanted to read a story that involved Superman and his son, and Batman and his. Just the cover alone made me want to read this. I also wanted to read this because Action Comics Vol 1, was such an amazing story/reboot of a Superman franchise that I felt had really lost its mind during New 52.
I was really disappointed with the Superman books really before New 52. They started to get too ridiculous with their story lines and I just didn't want to deal with it so I gave up these books. Since I felt that way I actually skipped Superman Vol 1 and didn't bother to request it. Well the Cover for that first Action Comics volume made me curious and I am so glad I read it. It renewed my faith in these books and it was rewarded with this book.
This book is broken up into different stories. The first one is really kind of heartwarming. We get to see Clark, Lois, and Jonathan as a family and just enjoying the county fair in their new home. Getting junk food, riding rides, and teaching John about girls and what not to say is fun and I enjoyed seeing this side of Superman.
The next section of the book has to do with Superman and Batman training their sons. Damien hates Johnathan and wants nothing more than to kill him or at the very least put him out of commission. Superman and Batman understand the need for teamwork and are determined to find a way to get these kids to play nice and work as a team. It doesn't help when the fighting between the two boys destroys one of Batman's Labs. I remember that look I would get when I would fight with my brother and something ended up broken.
I didn't feel that this book advanced the overall Superman story to much but it was a really enjoyable story that not only didn't disappoint but was fun and a fast entertaining read. I'm so glad I was granted this book for a review and I will be picking up Vol 1 to get caught up. I also will be continuing with this series as soon as Vol 3 is available. I also need to mention that I just love this artwork. The page on the right with the darkened Superman and Batman looking over the destruction Damien and John just created is just perfect.
This book was awesome and I am so so glad I read this. It is an easy decision to give this book 5 out of 5 stars. This year has given me a lot of 5 out of 5 reads and almost all of them are Rebirth books. Thank you DC Comics for getting back to the way things were and writing great stories again for the Superman line.
comics are not usually something i read i am very picky about them, but this was well done!
I could not review due to error in the file once downloaded.
Superman is one of my favorites from the dc rebirth tites, great characterization of Clark and Lois though still getting used to them having a son but he's growing on me. At first it took a while to remember the fact that this Clark was the one who married Lois and had actually died but came back instead of the Nu52 version.
The artwork is great and storylines like in the first issue (#7) is a stand alone of Superman taking some time off by spending it with the family at the local fair. Under all the family bonding moments here, a robbery happens that begs Clark into donning the “S” under his own families’ nose and it turns out to be a pretty funny and lighthearted tale to get into.Others issues in it show how well Jon and Damian will get along plus it's nice to see batfamily and superfamily interacting.
Still vol 2 of Superman shows great promise in showing how they will create Clark, Lois, and Jon in their new universe.
This TPB is sort of a few different father-son sort of super stories. There's my favourite story in the TPB, a cute story that takes place at a county faire with the 'Smith' family.
Then Jon creates something that transports he and Clark quite a bit away where they meet a very resilient one legged/one-eyed man who is fighting dinosaurs.
And finally, there were the trials from the title. Robin and Jon have confrontation after confrontation with one another (Robin totally started it) and can't seem to get along, even as Batman and Superman try to create situations where they have to work together. But, can those trials work?
I'm still liking this Superman and his family, and can't wait for more.
I got this ARC through Netgalley on behalf of DC Entertainment.
The focus being on John and his adventures, misadventures as well, made this book feel a bit different than the general superman stories. It was fun, John is an entertaining character and Lois and Clark's interactions in the story were always clever or funny. The most enjoyable part of this collection was the interaction between John and Damian while watching their fathers fret, or in batman's case judge. As different as batman and superman are in their philosophies they have always managed to see somewhat eye to eye and get along. Damian and John do not, despite John trying. Damian, John and nobody had such entertaining scenes and I would read an entire series devoted to them. This book would be well worth the money to purchase and anyone who enjoys superman and his family will love this collection.
