Wally West has returned and the (no longer teen) Titans don't remember him. At least, not at first. Wally is one of the largest players in Rebirth, and it will be interesting to see where his story leads in this and in others titles. Most highly recommended.
Wally is back! Titans Vol 1 is a great starting point for those looking to jump into a new series or into DC Rebirth. Memories and friendships return in this volume, and it is action packed. A good recommendation for teen readers looking for some new comics and some adventure.
In the Rebirth Titans Vol. 1: The Return of Wally West, Dan Abnett writes a Flash Wally West story that reminds the reader of Mark Waid's famous Wally West work that came before. The Titans are back and what's old is new again; this should appeal to both fans of the classic runs and the Titans' newer iterations.
This is my first story I've read set in the DC Rebirth universe, and it does not disappoint. Excellent writing for all the classic characters, with plenty of ties to the past and future of them all. Pick this up if you want a great story with Wally West, Nightwing, and more!
This was a little hard to follow because I'm not 100% current on what exactly Rebirth means for the DC. I know that this Wally is not the Wally of the New 52 (thankfully) but I was a little unclear exactly how everything connected relative to that. Also, I'm not familiar with Abra Kadabra, so I wasn't exactly sure what his power set was about, particularly relative to making the younger duplicates of the Titans.
That said, it was a decent story that was a lot of fun. I imagine that readers more familiar with Wally West may be excited about some of the plotlines this explores.
My Name is Wally West and I'm the Fastest Man Alive! And this story sure wouldn't let us forget that. I think it was said every chapter. However I still enjoyed Rebirth and seeing the Titans come together. I'm also intrigued by Mal's story.
First let me say that Team Titans was one of my favorite comic book, long ago. But the Rebirth did not do it for me. Some of the rebirth issues have been excellent, such as Wonder Woman, but this one was just ok. Too much fighting. Not enough development. Stupid stuff.
Thanks to Netgalley for making this book available for an honest review.
After finishing this I felt like it was an example of some of the best DC has to offer when it comes to characters and writing talent. Dan Abnett developed the characters quite well in this story arch and it was fun seeing our classic team back in action except for the fact it did feel a bit like this was more of Wally West story than one about the Titans as a team. But I’m a West fan so I was fine with the extra attention. I did like the friendship depictions that were developed and of course reading this so close to Valentine’s Day it was nice to get some romance in. What can I say? I like cliché romance stories this time of year where you see the good guy fight for love in his life.
Regarding the art. I’ve seen some complaints about Brett Booth’s designs but I don’t get it. I found his work to be intricate, detailed and adeptly able at bringing Abnett’s words to life. The characters look like what you’d expect and the color palette is vibrant breathing life onto the pages. I thought there was just a slight sophisticated touch to it that brought some maturity to a teen story.
Overall this was well worth my time as the stories were easy to read, full of enough action scenes to keep your attention and it made me glad to see Wally West back at the helm!
