Definitely in the vein of One Day, but Lucy and Gabe's relationship seems so frustratingly based on nothing that you feel she deserves to simply have the settled life that she gets. Neither pursue each other in a meaningful way that their end feels unexpected somehow.
This is a beautiful story of a love that was lost but never stopped. It kept me interested to see where the story was going. I had planned on reading a little when I first picked it up, then looked down to see I was already 70 percent into the book. This story is heartbreaking and raw. It'll leave you wanting to hug the ones you love close to you.
"The Light We Lost" an angst ridden heart wrenching love story that spans over a decade. The story is told in an pseudo diary form, which produces a very detailed discussion of the main protagonist Lucy's thoughts and feelings. Lucy meets Gabe in college. Their initial meeting the circumstances surrounding what bonded them was nicely done. That time in history is one of those defining moments where everyone who lived through it can instantly remember who they were with and what they were doing.
Had the Point of View been written in any other format, I would only imagine that the story would have lagged and stalled. Lucy only covers the noteworthy events of her life, energizing the pace and plot into a story I could not put down. None of the strategically placed foreshadowing slipped my notice. They were well place breadcrumbs as to what Gabe and Lucy's future held. A completely contemplative, melancholy read, with pockets of sweetness, hope, and love. 4.5 stars
Lucy and Gabe meet as college students, but don't get together at that point. Meeting again later, they begin an intense relationship, forming a bond that does not break although they go their separate ways. Lucy narrates the story as if retelling it, which becomes clear as we read further into the book. Emotional and raw, the book is not just a romance, as the description says, but so much more, with decisions made, roads taken and missed opportunities.
Spectacular!! Simply put, this book is spectacular!! I can honestly say that this novel is going to be in my top 3 books for 2017, if not # 1. I am completely and utterly emotionally spent after finishing The Light We Lost!! I am still marveling at the brilliant way Jill Santopolo weaved a beautifully heartbreaking novel that quite literally tugged at every single on of my heartstrings. I usually know within the first 5% of a book if it's going to be on my "epic read" list, but honestly, after the the prologue I knew...which was only a paragraph long!!! I am blown away by the fact that this is Jill Santopolo's first romance novel!! The Light We Lost is a 5 star read, but if I could give it a million stars, I would! Jill Santopolo has an amazing gift--books like this reminds me exactly why I adore to reading!! Do not miss this gem, I promise EVERYONE (even if romance isn't your preferred genre) will love it!!
