Blood virus by L. A. Hollis.
Thousands are dying and many more sickened as an unknown virus runs rampant through Western Africa. Its victims experience a violent death within a few days of exposure, so the CDC jumps in before the virus can become a global pandemic. They send their best man, Dr. Lennox Richards of the Epidemic Intelligence Service, to ground zero in Benin.
An ok read. Slow but readable. 3*.

Blood Virus: A Pandemic by Design is a book I've tried reading many times but have just been unable to get into. I've never gotten past chapter four. It's not been enough to pull me in and keep me interested, which is sad as I really liked the sound of it.
I feel like too much is crammed into a single paragraph, too much information dumping on the reader, giving them too much to deal with in one go instead of breaking it down into smaller, manageable chunks.
A DNF from me.

Good book for mindless reading. The situation and central character arrangements were a bit contrived, but it was an interesting premise.

The editing was so bad on this book's proof as to make it barely legible. The writing was not inspiring enough as to compel me to power through and finish the story. I would not recommend this book.

The blurb of this book interested me, in that it was a thriller involving a genetically engineered virus designed to target specific racial groups, which I thought was an interesting discussion in the current political climate. I was quite surprised to see how short the book was, given the subject matter.

A husband and wife team travel to Benin to investigate the origins of a virus which is wiping out large numbers of people, but doesn’t seem to be affecting – for the most part – white people.

Full disclosure – I did not finish this book, even as short as it was – I had only made about 70% progress through the book after almost a week, and it wasn’t showing signs of improvement. I felt the pacing of the story was really off, and I wasn’t really sure where the story was going. The main characters weren’t particularly interesting, and the side characters – particularly the Beninese – felt stereotypical, or bordering on the vaguely offensive.

I am not sure what the author’s publishing history is, but they seemed to make a lot of basic mistakes, truncating action to the point where we were being told about things, rather than showing them. This is particularly true in relation to what happens to the main female character over the course of the novel, and her rather blaise response to it. Looking at the author’s bio, she is a scientist, and perhaps in retrospect this novel is written in a particularly analytical, almost perfunctory style.

I was quite disappointed by what I did read of this novel in the end, and am glad that I did not subject myself to the rest. If life is too short for bad coffee, it’s way too short to spend time and energy on reading half-baked novels like this.

I love a good book about pandemics. This had most of what I like and a little of what I don't.
Dr. Lennox Richards is a physician for the CDC. He is notified of an Ebola type out break running rampant through Western Africa. The hot zone is Benin. Dr. Richards and a team head there along with his Liz, a photo journalist. I don;t want to give anything away, but there is voodoo and some bioengineering.
The part I really didn't like involved the liz. I really didn't see any reason for her. She had a damsel in distress attitude all the time. I really can't imagine that physicians from the CDC let their spouses travel with them to remote, quarantined areas and then complain that are distracted from their work worrying about their spouse. Liz was suppose to be going for an assignment for National Geographic. She kept wanting to slow people down by stopping to take pictures. When they arrive at camp, she pouts because she can't go and shoot because Lenny has to work, so she takes off with a guide. In my opinion that whole scenario should have been dropped. It was annoying. It was still a 3 out of 5, but taking the liz character out would have made it a 4 out of 5.

This book was ok.. The formatting was off which made the book a bit of a chore to read.. The concept of the book was good and I will read it again to get the full benefit of it once it comes out.
