One of the best written thrillers I have read in a long time. Warning, if you are seeking a romance, you need to rethink this book, this is a setup book for a romance in possibly book 2, as this appears to be a series.
Fantastic in depth thriller tracing back to World War 2 and the corruption that kept on after the war. The writer goes out on a limb to really 'show' the story and wrap a great thriller around something we all might think was left in Europe.
Elizabeth is funny, intelligent, witty, but has a depth of compassion that is key to her amazing heart. Elizabeth's dynamic with Grace is just wonderful. Tense, funny, authentic and loving. I felt a bit sad that I didn't get more of the romance between these two characters. I'm hoping in book 2 the writer is able to continue the mystery, but also develop the romance between Elizabeth and Grace.!
The development of Raymond with Elizabeth's parents was delightful. What a wonderful surprise to see how her parents changed from well written snobs to heartfelt souls who cherish Raymond. I enjoyed the element of surprise in reminding all of us never to judge people on assumptions.
Dan was written as a nice addition because you never knew where he stood, but in the end he was moved by money as well.
I don't want to give away any spoilers, but I can empathize with the dilemma to help people with the recovered research.
So let me say this is a great thriller. Very well done!
Attorney Elizabeth Campbell turned her back on her silver spoon upbringing and finds emotional fulfillment in her work at a nonprofit legal clinic, much to the dismay of her parents. Her propensity for bending the law, as well as uttering a few choice phrases, makes her pairing with a Catholic priest to investigate the case of a simple man with an IQ of a child, who confessed to a brutal killing, a challenge. But solving a gruesome murder is not even her greatest trial—it’s her growing attraction to sexy but cranky Detective Grace Donovan who is hell-bent on keeping her client in prison. While chasing a mystery that found its way from the concentration camps of WWII to an abandoned Catholic school, Elizabeth and Grace struggle to set personal boundaries, as their relationship slowly evolves from one of hostility to indifference, to something neither wishes to define.

4.5 stars
As far as page turning legal thrillers go, this is one of the best I've read in a very, very long time. The story is told mostly from Elizabeth's POV, but due to the amount of players, so to speak, the reader gets into a number of heads.
The story is beautifully told, or should I say shown. Even the not so beautiful, at times gruesome, parts.
My heart went out to Raymond, and I'm glad he had Elizabeth and her parents in his corner. Although I figured out around the 55-60% who was responsible for the killings it didn't detract from my reading experience. I was so sure I was right, I kept reading like a woman possessed to find out if I was correct.
I expected Grace to have a lot more page time given the blurb, the appearances she did make were wonderful. I loved the banter between Elizabeth and Beth. However, any form of romance takes a backseat until just before the curtain comes down.
Judging by the ending, there's more to come, and I for one can't wait.
