“I want everything with you, Valetta. I love you. I never thought I could say that to another woman.” – Samson Lee
Aaaaand, thank God for sequels, so that characters have the potential to make up for the lousy first impression they may have made on us!
In the second book of the Arctic Brotherhood series, Samson, the tall brute who claimed he was so much better than a woman, ends up trying to locate the daughter of a retired fellow Brotherhood member. But Valetta, the daughter in question, is not just any woman. She's had her eye on Samson for a long time, but due to his past, he couldn't accept her feelings. Now, thrown together in a war between werewolf tribes and a prophecy warning the wolves of the Shadow Born, they must learn to work side by side, protect each other, and maybe, this time around, finally accept that they were meant to be with one another.
I'm not gonna lie, Samson was an awesome character in the first book, but he still made me twitch every time he would doubt Jenny because of her gender. Now, faced with another Alpha female, he had to learn to control his tongue, and his urges to take lead - although we all know he fails horribly at that. However, I have to admit I was pleasantly surprised with how things turned out. More than that, I was sad when I read what had taken place in the past, and could at some degree understand his attitude.
Valetta on the other hand was easy to like. Right from the start, I sympathized with her and the multiple obstacles she had to overcome in her personal life - and as a leader to her team. I was at the edge of my seat when she was kidnapped, and freaked out like no tomorrow when she was presented with a choice that didn't look the least positive. Not to mention I got mad when the truth behind the prophecy was out - even if I suspected something like that at some point.
The pace was top speed as usual, and the love scenes mighty intense. The dialogues were also something I enjoyed - the banters between Samson and Valetta, or when all of the Brotherhood was together, were the highlight of the story. I really can't wait to read the rest of the series!
“I’ve always loved you. I just never hoped you could feel the same way, especially once you found out I was Shadow Born.” – Valetta Rickard
***I was given an ARC from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. The opinion stated in this review is solely mine, and no compensation was given or taken to alter it.***
The one phrase that has managed to strike fear into Valetta Rickard. A young lady born into privilege, beauty, and a secret. A secret linked to the wolf inside her. A secret linked to a mother she never knew. A secret that if unleashed, could make her the destroyer of the Arctic Werewolf race.
So, when the beautiful young were female disappears from her home without a trace. Her father, a former member of the elite Arctic Brotherhood, turned senator, is on a mission to find his only daughter. A mission that he will do anything to complete. A mission he knows can only find a successful conclusion in the hands of one man...Samson Lee.
Samson Lee is the best "tracker" that the Arctic Brotherhood has. Which means that he is the best "tracker" period.
The fact that the last time Samson had seen the beautiful alpha, the chemistry between the two had produced a natural phenomenon to rival the Aurora Borealis. It would be more than safe to say that Samson's reasons for finding Valetta can only be classified as "personal".
But to say that "sometimes things aren't as they appear" would be quite the understatement. As Samson soon learns, when he finds that the missing Valetta is know alpha of the very gang thought to want to kill her.
A twist of fate that changes Samson's role in her life from that of rescuer of bodyguard. As he now works with Valetta to solve the mysteries of both her mysterious past, and what could be a very deadly future.
Shadow Wolf is the second offering in the Arctic Brotherhood series. A book that it seems lets the girls take the lead. At least that is what one comes to think at first glance. But the closer that one looks into this most twisty of paranormal plots, the more one comes to see that this is less and less the case.
Sadly, Valetta just never seems to be able to convincingly wrangle her alpha. A disappointing fact that is thankfully negated by all of the history, mystery, and lore surrounding the Shadow Wolf plot line.
Speaking of which...
All the build up that leads to the final appearance of said Shadow Wolf provides readers with decidedly more excitement than the actual event.
In fact, everything about the famed and lauded Shadow Wolf can best be described as anticlimactic.
It is both the lack of a true alpha, in the case of Valetta, and the rather lackluster outcome of the Shadow Wolf plot. That gives reason for the 4 Star rating to an otherwise 5 Star read. The writing is superb. The romance and rapport between the leads is effortless. The story as a whole is cohesive and well done.
What seems to have happened here, is what happens sometimes in the case of second books. It is a "middle child syndrome" of sorts. A book that is serving as both the continuing momentum for the series as a whole. As well as a "one up" for the story that came before. Never really managing to find a solid footing of its own in the process.
Reviewer's Note: Shadow Wolf is the second book in a loosely related companion series. As such, it may be read in any order within the series. Or as a standalone.

I was really looking forward to seeing more of the world of the artic werewolves and was thrilled that Samson Lee was the love interest. He was a bit of a jerk to Jenny until he warmed up to her and I was anticipating a deeper look into his life. He had a heartbreaking background and I rooted for him and Valetta's HEA. The mystery of the Shadow Wolf was pretty good. I did guess what was going on so that made me a little frustrated with the characters not following up on the clues that were right before them. I loved to see the brotherhood come together again. The use of an historical person as the nemesis… I still not sure how I feel about that but I will admit the account of the Beast of Gévaudan fit in well with werewolf lore.
Unlike the first book where I read it non-stop, this one I kept stopping and googling details. With the setting in Alaska, I loved the idea at first. But with the introduction of an outlaw motorcycle gang in Fairbanks who holed up put in the middle of the countryside… I had issues. It all began with Crystal Falls. I knew the Crystal Falls of Alaska to be an actual place. I know that often locations are made up but usually those don't clash with real locations. But since I knew where Crystal Falls was, the story started falling apart for me, especially when it was stated the area benefited from the midnight sun, which I knew wasn't true. The region setting started crumbling for me because there wasn't a clear idea where they were supposed to be in Alaska. Then I was googling things every chapter. There were continuity issues with the midnight sun (which can be seen 50 miles south of the Artic Circle if the terrain allows, and Fairbanks is at least three times as far from that point) and if artic wolves in Fairbanks would or wouldn't benefit from it. There are no state or federal roads north of Fairbanks. So when they traveled outside of Fairbanks without details how they got to these other communities that motorcycle gangs were supposed to roam, I was flustered and confused. I know all communities north of Fairbanks you either go by plane, sled, or snowmobile. Any other local roads would be dirt tracks. I needed there to be a better grasp on the area and a description that anchored them to the area even if said community was fake. The other thing I needed was a better information on the midnight sun. Fairbanks is too far away but in the summer they have twilight nights where it doesn't get dark but the "sun" is not above the horizon for them. All of this drew me out of the story because it wasn't connecting for me. The last thing that I couldn't suspend disbelief on was Jean Chastel's ethnic background and ancestry was changed from French to Alaskan Native American. I just couldn't swallow that.
I'm giving this 3 Stars because despite my issues with facts and details, the plot was one that I liked. Valetta was a good character, though her whining was old after a while but once she grasped on to the hope that was staring her in the face she turned out more powerful than she gave herself credit for. Samson, just let me bring him home. I loved him. I just wish some of the details were nailed down better so I could sink into the story instead of googling what confused me.
The second book in the Arctic Brotherhood series did not disappoint. I got my dose of werewolf urban legends skilfully inserted into the plot. Samson Lee is the shifter Arctic Wolf in charge in this one, and he is a dream!
So jealous of Valetta to be paired up with this confident and lethal alpha. If you like shifter romances and supernatural setting, you are going to LOVE ‘Shadow Wolf’.
Shadow Wolf is the second book in the Arctic Brotherhood series, and this time we are with the joker of the pack, Samson. An old member of the brotherhood has contacted him to say that he is receiving threats about a 'Shadow Wolf' and he has no idea what it's all about. Not only that, but his daughter has disappeared, and he is worried that the two things are connected. Being as tracking is his special ability, Samson is the obvious one to turn to. He will do all he can to find Valetta whilst not acting upon the overwhelming attraction that he has for her. This is because he feels guilty over wanting someone else after his mate was murdered, even though it was many years ago. Valetta is an Alpha Female, but she also knows her place in the hierarchy, and will defer to Samson when she feels it necessary.
This is once again very well written, with a blend of modern life and Norse mythology. The characters from book one all make an appearance, which is always a personal favourite of mine. I like seeing characters in a series turn up in someone else's book. The action is just as fast as book one, and the steamy moments are definitely there, even if Samson feels guilty. It sounds like this story may also go into other books, so I will be happily waiting to find out more. With sassy heroines and full on Alpha males, I can definitely recommend this to all shifter fans.
It's the second book in the series and I can't wait for the next one. It's turned out to be a brilliant saga.
SHADOW WOLF was a confusing mythological mess that overran what could have been a sweet story between two characters. From the beginning of the book, there are so many unanswered questions that the author isn’t interested in addressing that I spent most of the book frowning in confusion.
My main complaint was with the treatment of the female characters in the book. Although Valetta goes out and does something to try and protect her father, she ends up as a figurehead with no real power until Samson shows up to save her. Then she discovers her destiny (not as a destroyer, but as a protector, of course), and then is kidnapped by the main villain. Another female character who was kidnapped by a rival biker gang, Cindy, is saved early on in the book by Samson. I say saved… He takes her after brutally killing the men who held her captive for the last two years, brings her to Valetta’s father and says: you keep an eye on her, pretend she’s your housekeeper or something. So this poor abused girl gets passed around between powerful men, and then actually becomes the housekeeper and falls for Valetta’s dad! Who we’re told is old enough to have retired from the Brotherhood… wait what?
More unanswered questions include:
How can shifters who are immortal get to an age where they can retire?
How many times can the shadow wolf mythology get retconned?
Can women do anything without getting kidnapped?
How weird is it that they all have blond hair and blue eyes, and how weird is it that the author mentions at least twice how weird it is seeing all these guys together?
What bloody country is this novel set in? I was sure we were in Alaska, but then they find a ruined castle?!
When a reader cannot tell what country, or even hemisphere the book is set in, maybe you should spend a little less time revising the mythology as new information is discovered (it turns out we had this power all along!) and a bit more time trying to ground your characters in a real world where Stockholm syndrome doesn’t lead to romance.
Shadow Wolf is a paranormal romance that is unique. Using a mish mash of various mythologies from what I can tell. Not to be taken too seriously it is still a pleasure to read. I liked the premise of the Brotherhood of the Artic Sun. Great characters.
I received a free copy from NetGalley; this is my honest review.
This is a Steamy Wolf Shifters Fantasy Romantic Suspense.
Steamy: there are a lot of great sex scenes in this book - but maybe too much?
Fantasy: save the wolf world with magic, legends and so forth.
Wolf Shifters: ties up with fantasy when the author created the Shadow Wolf and the Shadow Born; but we also get our fearful arctic wolves brotherhood too.
Rom Susp: the author jumps right into the details of the suspense to come; she trickles those details right up to the end; did we get all of them? I'm not sure but it was satisfying.
The story has it's own HFN but we were left with a punch. Apart from that, which caught me by surprise (as it should), there were also lots of pending questions that could have been answered right in the book - I won't mention them because they would spoil the story. Not to forget the other ones left unanswered from the first book. With all this, I cannot say that the HFN was convincing - hence the reason why I took one star off.
Kudos to the editor; great editing. PS There a lot more swearing in this book than the first one; probably because Samson was the one swearing in book one?
Great relationship between Samson and Valetta with plenty of hot tension between them. I really liked the action and the bringing in of the rest of the pack. Recommend to anyone looking for a different take on the werewolf myth.
Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC.
I read the first book in this series last week and when I saw this, the second book, was also available, I just couldn’t resist! This is a brilliant sequel, featuring again the Arctic Brotherhood but it isn’t a god they are facing but both a legendary shifter and a werewolf hunter.
Samson Lee is one of the Brotherhood. His mate was killed centuries ago and he isn’t looking for another. However, five years ago he kissed the daughter of another member of the Brotherhood and was severely tempted. That member has now retired but has contacted Samson because his daughter has mysteriously disappeared. Samson is determined to find her and to discover more about a rogue gang of Arctic werewolves. When he discovers she’s not only with the rogues but also their leader, he convinces her to let him work with her as she tries to discover just what the end goal of the gang is. This is another fact paced adventure where the seven members of the Brotherhood have to work together, applying their knowledge, skills and wolves to help defeat a common enemy. However, be prepared, that ending is amazing and I can’t wait to read more from this series in future!
I’m impressed with Jane Godman’s ability to bring the Brotherhood to life within the pages of her novel. Each character is emotively portrayed and the scenery feels breath taking, though I can only see it through her words in my imagination. This is a fast paced story with plenty of twist and turns to make it another page turner that I highly recommend to anyone who enjoys paranormal mysteries, with good v evil and so much more in a heart warming romance.
Many thanks to the publishers for gifting me a copy of this novel, via NetGalley, with no obligation. This is my honest review.
This is the second installment of this series and it has just as much chemistry and shifter action as the first. Although I wasn't pulled in to the story immediately, it didn't take long for me to be completely intrigued with figuring out what the heck was going on.
Samson, one of the Brotherhood members we met in the first installment, is asked to help his long time friend and former Brotherhood member with a missing persons case. Considering he's a tracker and a damn good one, it shouldn't be too difficult, right? But this isn't just any case, its the friends daughter. A daughter who he shared a kiss with year ago. A daughter who can destroy an entire species. A daughter who's been captured by someone who wants to do just that.
Valetta is the daughter. I'm not gonna lie. She takes some getting used to. Her character wasn't the easiest for me to mentally grab a hold of, but it got the job done, so to speak. Valetta has kept a secret she learned from her dying mother two years ago from her father and now it's all coming out. Throw in some suspense and mystery, some twists and turns and we're sent on a jam packed ride in this book.
Even though I loved the "sexiest" attitude Samson gave us in the first book, I have to admit that I fell a little harder for him in this one. He's just sexy as hell. Of course the chemistry between Valetta and Samson was animalistic to say the least, so there really isn't much more you'll need to know there. The author presents another twist to the story line. One that has pulled me back in again. Let's see where the next one takes us.

Hebdrik’s daughter Valetta was missing. Hendrik’s friend Samson was there to help Hendrik find Valetta. Hendrik had retired from the Brotherhood of the Midnight Son but Samson still belonged to the Brotherhood and was Hendrik’s best friend. Samson nor Hendrik had ever heard of the Shadow Wolf. A Shadow Born wolf is a rare spirit form that can form a bond with another species of wolf copying everything about them until it becomes a mirror image of the host. The Shadow wolf’s purpose is to breed with the host werewolf. Once it succeeds the problems will arise. The cubs of the Shadow wolf known as the Shadow Born have the power to destroy the host species. The wolves of the Guardians Of Hati believe Hendrik is harboring A Shadow Born werewolf. Valetta told Samson it was true as she was the Shadow Born werewolf. Her mother had left Valetta a letter to open whens he was twenty one. So valetta had been dealing with that knowledge by herself for two years as her mother had asked Valetta not to tell her father Theresa - Valetta’s mother- had been a Shadow wolf Samson had a mate -Anna- who had been killed while he was out hunting and Samson held that guilt to himself. Samson’s feelings had shut down until five years ago when Valetta had kissed him. Every since she had shifted the first time Valetta had sensed something deep inside herself . Valetta had not allowed herself to shift in two years since she had read the letter. When Hendrik had went out two weeks ago for a couple hours his daughter was home but when he came back she was gone but her car was still there and her purse and phone were still in the kitchen. In the two weeks Valetta had been missing there was no word from her or from whoever had taken her. Hendrik was a well known and respected figure in Alaskan politics and he was also an Arctic werewolf.A vicious motorcycle gang seems to be targeting Hendrik. Samson asks if Hendrik if he thinks this Shadow Born stuff was coming from the motorcycle gang targeting him. Hendrik said the timing was right. The gang turned up about the same time the campaign against Hendrik started. Also the members of the gang look like Arctic werewolves. Samson had been looking for Valetta for days and had met about every motorcycle gang leader in a fifty mile radius. The last gang had a girl with them and her name was Cindy who had been kidnapped two years ago. Cindy told Samson a gang came into their territory and they had a girl named Valetta with them and she had been angry when Cindy had seen her. The gang's name had been The Guardians Of Hati- who was the wolf God of the Arctic wolves. Then Samson finally met up with The Guardians Of Hati and the leader was Valetta. Valetta had fallen in love with Samson when she was a teen and at eighteen had offered herself to Samson but Samson had gently but firmly turned her down. After that Samson had stayed away from Hendrik for five years.because he had really wanted Valetta and felt it wasn’t right. But he had come very close to accepting her. Valetta had taken over the gang with no problem but she knew eventually she would come up against the real person behind all the hate against her dad. Samson offered to stay so he could help.
I loved this story it was a good read and kept my interest all the way through. I liked how things just fell together or so it seemed. I enjoyed how Samson was so attracted to Valette but it was his best friend’s daughter so he was tore but Valetta had never stopped loving Samson. If I were Hendrik I would want someone as good and brave and strong to be with my daughter. I liked the action in this story and I love how the Arctic wolves are different even those that could shift when they wanted they still maintained the way of the Arctic wolf and the love and draw of the Midnight Sun. All and all a great story. I loved the characters and the ins and outs of this story and i highly recommend.
Shadow Wolf gives us another bit of new lore to this world. The Shadow Born wolf has the ability for complete and utter destruction of an entire species – and the evil villain really wants to get their hands of Valetta and her abilities.
Valetta feels herself unworthy of being loved and has slipped away from Samson before. Now she’s going to need his help and that of other members of the Arctic Brotherhood to avoid certain death – her own or others.
Shadow Wolf is extremely fast paced with a story line that will capture your attention. While Samson came off as a bit of a jerk in the first story in this series, it’s always a delight to discover the other side of a character. He is intense, and yes, very much over the top in his Alpha ways, but his heart is golden and his cause is true. His attraction to Valetta is intense and he has his work cut out for him in keeping her safe… and convincing her that as his mate, she is worth all of his love and more.
I enjoyed this second story in the Arctic Brotherhood very much. It moves the overlying story along and gives us more lore on these wolves and their mates. The only thing I’m not particularly thrilled with are the epilogues – I’d rather read more of the couple’s near future and not a lead in to the next villain, but that’s my preference. Over all, this is an intriguing shifter romance that anyone who enjoys Paranormal Romance would find interesting.
*I received an e-ARC of this novel from the publisher via NetGalley. That does not change what I think of this story. It is my choice to leave a review giving my personal opinion about this book.*
Shadow Wolf is Book 2 of the Arctic Brotherhood Series by Jane Godman. Again there is much to like about this new wolf shape-shifter series. The action is intense, the romance hot and the characters fully developed. Since Samson, aa artic brotherhood wolf had known Valetta for some time this story did not have an instant-love feel. Samson & Valetta’s story is somewhat darker than the first book but the danger with the suspense is ramped up to go along with that.
Ms. Godman has again given the reader some new twists in this paranormal story. The second book is as refreshing unique as the first was. There is a complexity to the characters and their actions that make this an intriguing read. Still a lot of wolf chemistry and steamy scenes. For an exhilarating exciting read, fans of paranormal owe it to themselves to check out the Arctic Brotherhood Series, especially Shadow Wolf.
Ms Godman has definitely kept the adrenaline pumping with this second instalment in her Arctic Brotherhood series.
Powerful alphas, loyalty that lives within their blood, and passion so intense that you're left gasping for air; this and so much more will keep me coming back again and again, as each new book is released!
Shadow Wolf by Jane Godman is the 2nd book in her Arctic Brotherhood series. Having enjoyed the first book in this series, I was pleasantly surprised to find that Shadow Wolf was equally or a bit better then Ice Wolf.
In Shadow Wolf, Samson Lee takes the lead, as he is summoned by his friend, a former retired member of the Arctic Brotherhood. Seems that his daughter, is missing, and he wants Samson to find her. Valetta Rickard, our heroine, has gone undercover, joining a group of Arctic Wolves (not the Brotherhood). Valetta is determined to find out who is trying to kill her father, as well as discover the truths about the legend of Shadow Born. When Samson finds her, she is considered the leader of this group of Arctic misfits, and he joins the group to help her. Samson senses not all is right, and once he convinces Valetta that something is very wrong, they begin to work together to discover what is really happening.
Valetta has always had a crush on Samson, but he has always treated her like his friends daughter, keeping his distance. Samson lost his wife hundreds of years before, being murdered in an attack; he blames himself and for all those years he has not looked at another woman. Valetta in a short time, with them being together during the adventure, slowly uses her charms and feelings to weaken Samson’s resolve. They made such a great couple, and both were also very powerful. The story line of the Shadow born was very interesting, which added to the element of finding the truth of her past, and who is behind the evil.
The action became especially exciting when the entire Arctic Brotherhood joins Samson and Valetta to stop the evil behind the mask. Not only was it very exciting, but also surprising as another evil being from hundreds of years ago is the villain. Valetta will learn the truth about who she is, and there are some very emotional moments, as well as dangerous death defying moments. Shadow Wolf was an excellent story, which I read in one day. I look forward to the next installment of the Arctic Brotherhood series, and to see what Jane Godman has in store for us.
Shadow Wolf is book two in the Arctic Brotherhood series. I enjoyed Samson & Valetta’s story it is a great story and had me hooked early. I am loving this series and I look forward to seeing what comes next.
In this second novel of the Arctic Brotherhood series, Jane Goodman again focused most of her efforts on Brotherhood characters. Getting a story concerning Samson, who we were introduced to in Ice Wolf, was really nice. His relationship with a former member of the Brotherhood was very abrupt and rushed but wasn't as big of a deal to the overall story so it wasn't terrible. The driving force behind this story is supposed to be the legend of the Shadow Wolf and Valetta, but I once again was not as impressed with Valetta's character development or the overall logic behind the Shadow Wolf.
Ms. Goodman also seems to enjoy having a dangerously, powerful villain and then her characters easily subdue them like it is child's play. And then, when everyone is celebrating their success and HEA she has an unsubtle epilogue of the villain's thoughts or miraculously not-dead-afterall moment. I know she's hoping to bring readers back for the next story but when this happened again in this story and didn't have any reference to how it might have related to the previous story's villain, I was not impressed. An overall good writer and uses some obvious and frustrating writing tricks to attempt to draw readers back for the next in the series.
