This was an ok addition to the series. It took me a while to get into the story but the end was worth pushing through.
Another fab book in the series! I've been looking forward to Wulf's story since the beginning, and it did not disappoint - he was actually a lot sweeter than I expected, and Kathlyn was a great match for him. She's grown up in an environment designed to break her and mold her to what her father, King Athenian, wants her to be, but she's spent the years honing her silent, inner strength and defiance instead. Wulf is strong, stoic and sexy, and completely surprised by how little Kathlyn has snuck under his defences. They both find new strength in each other and I couldn't be happier with how this story unfolded.
First I need to give props to Crane as I'm not really into the whole Dystopian thing. Yes, now you're wondering then why would you request this book? I didn't, my ten-year-old did. So with that, I read it because I took one look at the cover and knew I needed to read it before she could. I felt a little lost, so I looked the book up on Amazon. Low and behold it's book four in a series. What I did enjoy was that Crane's writing style is more descriptive then dialogue. I felt the emotions and overall really liked this book. Thanks to my kid I was introduced to a new author and look forward to reading more books.
So many ways to express my love for this book. Gritty. Sizzling Hot. Wulf was OMG to die for! He's right up there with my all-time favourite heroes!
Edge of Power is the 4th book in the Edge Series. Each book can be read as a stand-alone, but as always it’s best to read the series from the beginning to grasp the full scope of these characters and this complex plot. This fourth book of the series does not disappoint as the mysteries of this alternative world are revealed in a truly epic way.
Wulf the Raider King has invaded the domain of his mortal enemy in order to seek vengeance and he is out for blood. Allowing his enemies to believe they have “captured him” he lies in wait for his allies and brothers to join him so that they can bring wrath on the evil King and his entire Kingdom. When Kathlyn the virgin princess enters his prison/chamber, he is taken by her beauty and fearless demeanor.
Kathlyn has suffered years of abuse by her father’s hand and Wulf offers Kathlyn a hope that she has never experienced before. If Kathlyn can give herself to Wulf, she will no longer be used as a bargaining chip by her father. Tired of being manipulated and abused, she is desperate. Is Wulf a savior or is he a devil in disguise? The stakes are high for Kathlyn and Wulf and survival is on the line. Is it possible for a ruthless Viking King to win the heart of this virgin princess and if he succeeds, will he be able to keep her by his side?
Told in dual POV, Edge of Power is full of action and suspense as the horrors of this alternative world are revealed. Each book in this series features an unapologetic alpha male hero who is ruthless in every aspect of his life (to include the bedroom). Wulf is especially unique with his spy/stealth talents which drive the action through every single page turn. I found Kathlyn to be an ideal match for the Viking King, and as always, the passion between the two is off the charts. In this world, sexuality is free, and pleasure is as accessible as breathing. The writing style of this series is quite dense meaning each and every detail of the setting is painted with vibrant colors throughout the text. The plot is complex and with each book in the series more of the mystery and intrigue is revealed.
Overall, I have enjoyed this series and Wulf certainly did not disappoint. If you enjoy escaping to an alternative universe with a world with no electricity, sexual freedom, and smoking hot VIKING MEN than look no further, this is the series for you!
Wulf's book not only ties together a few story arc's over the entire series, but this is perfectly read as a standalone. Travelling alone to the mainland, Wulf has a mission, but that mission is put in jeopardy when the virgin princess Kathlyn enters his room dressed as a courtesan, because she wants a choice in a life where she has none.
While in previous books we saw Wulf as a hard Alpha, this has been toned down a touch and we see another side of him in his interactions with Kat. He also realises that this woman may be his match, for all of her softness she has a core of steel, and now she has seen the light and a possible new future she has no issues fighting for it..
This is a fantastic read and as the action heats up the the end, we see new characters coming to light and possibly new stories. This was a good read and i totally recommend.
My thanks to Netgalley for an opportunity to read and review this book.
I voluntarily read an advanced review copy of this book
This series is out of this world. I love the concept of these strong barbaric men and the strong beautiful women who love them, work together to try and give electricity to the world.
In this book Wulf steps in and gets his hands dirty in more ways than one and Kathlyn finally decides to stop hiding and step out for all of the world... especially her father...so they can see her for who and what she is.
I loved hearing Wulfs' story and seeing how he can use his strength to empower someone like Kathlyn. It was like she transformed right before our eyes. Overall this book was great can't wait for more!
I could not get past the first chapter in this book, I can't give an exact reason, I just couldn't get into it.
I'm not usually a fan of dystopian romances, but I am a fan if Megan Crane and in Edge of Power she has once again shown me why I like her writing so much. This is a skilfully crafted novel filled with plot twists and enough drama to keep you reading right to the end.
Both Wulf and Kathlyn are strong characters in their own way. Wulf has the very obvious physical abilities of a natural born fighter, but he demonstrates in this novel that he is also a strategist. Kathlyn has learnt the art of self-preservation and practices it to perfection, putting on just the right show at just the right time to ensure her continued survival.
This novel is fourth in the series, but stands alone easily. I should mention though that this story is not for everybody. It is filled with strong language and violence, and the sex scenes are fairly graphic. Having said that, it is all in context and therefore perfectly fine in my book. This has been a great read.
Every time I read a new Megan Crane book it reminds me how much I love new Megan Crane books. I enjoy her books so much that I keep expecting that I probably won't like the next one, because my luck really isn't all that great, but the next one is as great as the last one if not better; each and every time.
Wulf is a smoking hot dominating alpha male, The King of The Raiders, a clan of tough as nails. Masters at hand to hand combat in this amazingly described dystopian earth, which reminded me some of the sectors in the Hunger Games, at least the "high class city" where he holes up as a "prisoner/guest" to take down their horribly cruel and currupt dictactor king, who also happens to be the father of the most sexy beautiful princess Kathlyn.
The citizens in this "sector" are hoarding the electric power source for themselves and King Wulf has added liberating the power for the benefit of the entire population in this frozen wetlands of a planet to his list of objectives going into this mission. While an important reason it isn't his most compelling reason and Wulf has many reasons to kill King Athenian thus ending his reign of tyranny. The fact that he's abused Kathlyn her entire life, belittling her and beating her has just jumped that to the top of his to list.
Princess Kathlyn was a great character herself. Seeing her transformation from the beginning o the end was almost poetic. The combination of her soft to Wulfs hard was simply perfect.
Megan Crane does a wonderful job weaving through all of their emotions and is a descriptive genius. I just can't say enough about this series, The Edge. Pick up a copy, if not all of them as soon as possible, you will not be disappointed. Although a series, each title can be read as a stand-alone novel but together they tell a truly fantastic story.
Book 1: Edge of Obsession published 1-5-16 (Tyr & Helena)
Book 2: Edge of Temptation published 4-5-16 (Gunnar & Maud)
Book 3: Edge of Control published 7-5-16 (Riordan & Eiryn)
Book 4: Edge of Power published 3-7-17 (Wulf & Kathlyn)
I appreciated the opportunity to read this book and Thank Netgalley and St Martin's Press for the ARC in exchange for a honest review.
There's not a lot of romances that embrace not only the darkness of an apocalyptic setting but also the rawness of a life being lived in that world. Megan Crane has achieved this in spades. Each book is a piece of a giant world that is scary but compelling. The same can be said for the characters. Crane has become a master of disaster and that's an excellent thing.
I am a huge fan of Megan Crane and was excited to read Wulf's story. While it was still a good book and interesting enough read, I found it to be more boring than the previous books in this series. Wulf and Kathlyn had the potential to be such great characters, but there was too much back story and it was a bit too didactic for my taste. While there was still some steamy romance, it took awhile to get there. I would have preferred more action and attraction from the beginning. It was still a good read...just not as fulfilling as some of Megan Crane's other works.
I have thoroughly enjoyed this series. It was engaging and kept me interested enough to binge read all 4
The first book I read by Megan Crane was the second book in the series, Edge of Temptation. It was raw, gritty and breathtaking and was immediately a huge fan. Unfortunately, with this last offering, I just didn't connect to the characters the way I had hoped. It was a great book, don't get me wrong. It just wasn't as in your face as the second one was. I'm going to start from the beginning of the series and read it straight thru to see if my experience is enhanced.
3.5 Stars. While I enjoyed getting a different side of the fearless leader, Wulf's story felt a bit long winded. If the extra pages offered something that needed to be eased into, I would understand, but I felt the book could've been 100 pages less and still have had the same effect.
Kathlyn was a good match for Wolf. She offered a contrast that complimented Wulf and showed strength is an indirect way. I liked her a lot. I also liked who Wulf was with her. She smoothed out some of his edges.
The plot was interesting and continued an overall arc that's spanned the series in a seamless manner. It used elements already in place well. There wasn't much utilization of secondary characters until the end but it served to emphasize the developing relationship all the better.
The sex was hot but not to the degree we have seen in previous books in the series. In fact, I found it rather tame compared to how Wulf got down in his previous cameos. While it added a little more depth to him, I found it harder to reconcile him to the previous version we were exposed to.
All in all an enjoyable read. Safety: No others for either after they get together. No rape, but the threat of it. Yes to abuse.
ARC received in exchange for an honest review.
This book was a total flop to me. Compared to the other books in the series, this one lacked all the elements that made them so addicting and readable.
-Awesome romantic and sexual tension
-A portrayal of fierceness in the raider way of life
-Strong female protagonist
-Lots of action
-A plot that moves quickly
With the opportunity to peek into the mind of the king and most mysterious raider of all, I expected to enjoy Wulf's perspective immensely. He is portrayed as such an enigma throughout the entire series. And in experiencing Kathryn a bit towards the end of book 3, I had great hopes for her too. But this novel didn't live up to any of that.
These two being holed up in the castle for about a month (and far removed from any raider lifestyle) and having extremely limited contact with each other did nothing for me. There was no antagonism, the connection that felt barely there, and Wulf's personality felt like a deflated balloon. I expected him to be the fiercest and most charismatic of all, even if it was fairly internalized, what with his kingly status.
The only other thing that bugged me was that there was so much obsessive thinking going on for each character. There would be one line of dialogue by one of these two main characters and then a full page or two of internalized thoughts, then another line of dialogue, and repeat. It bothered me in each book in the series but in the other ones, it was at least counteracted with a ton of tension and chemistry, likeable yet frustrating characters, and plenty of action and intriguing plot.
I kept my high hopes for the first half, hoping Edge of Power would pick up or improve. The last half of the book I just stuck with to finish it out.
I have been eagerly awaiting the book about Wulf ever since he made an appearance in the first book. He is such a charismatic character, I wondered who his leading lady would be. Kathlyn was definitely a match for him, not because she was physically strong but because she seemed to slip into his heart. He calls her the only soft thing in this world but that doesn't mean she is weak. She has been lost being under her father's tyrannical rule but she is strong and kind in her own way. You could feel how frustrated Wulf was as he was acting the decoy under King Athenian. This is not a standalone......the main arc from the last 3 books gets resolved in the Edge of Power with the other characters making an appearance. I'm not sure if this is the final book of the series but I have enjoyed this dystopian world. The 1st and thei last book has been my favorites.
This series has been fascinating. Wulf as the king of the Raider Clan after floods covered most of the earth. They are considered the scavengers by most of those left. They have been trying to figure out power for those that have lost power and when a mission led them to the western mainlands last year they saw lights everywhere, hoarded by the church and the Kings, except the church is not what it professes to be and it's Wulf's mission to go into King Athenian's kingdom to prevent a war that he was tipped off to and to be able to give others the light everyone deserves.
When Wulf gets there he meets Princess Kathlyn yet she presents herself as a courtesan. He realizes right away that she is not a courtesan and doesn't take advantage of that although he does give her a taste of what he is and what he can do for her.
This begins a set of events that cannot be undone and he tryst very hard to save her humiliation. Through these events they grow closer to one another. Except her father loves to play mind games and is a tyrant who enjoys abusing her.
Wulf has to make it twenty-one days before his brothers get there to take the castle and kill the king. Will he be able to stay alive or will the King kill him as he has wanted to do and will he also kill Kathlyn? Will they find the power and be able to restore some of it? Will he and Kathlyn be married?
I received this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This is not my usual genre but I enjoyed the story a lot. The characters were really well written. This is the fifth book in the series but can be read as a stand alone read. The story was easy to follow and will just suck you and keep you hooked till the very last page. I can’t wait to read more from this author in the future.
Highly recommended
I voluntary reviewed an advance reader copy of this book.
Lots of suspense and drama in this fast-paced read. I liked the characters as well as the story and Wulf and Kathlyn have great chemistry. It certainly can be read as a stand-alone but it is a good series.
