Was unable to get into this book. I couldn't relate to the main character and the plot was meh.

After being kicked out of high school—and not regretting it at all—a surfing-obsessed girl who can always tell when someone’s lying meets an appropriately weird guy who needs her help to fight off an evil menace. It takes being temporarily turned into a mermaid, along with the death of a frenemy, to raise the stakes and get her to help.
I really like this character, and it’s a cute story. A bit of the usual “This is your destiny” with a teen love triangle added, though it felt a little weird hearing a story that takes place in a beach town in SoCal with a British accent. But the most important note is that it wouldn’t have been as good without such an awesome protagonist.

ISBN; 9781542491037. Blueglass Press. 15 Jan 2017. Thanks to Netgalley for supplying my e-copy.

My name is Lana Ingram, and I can tell when people are lying. It got me kicked out of high-school, go figure. My mom’s kinda weird, my sister social-media famous and my boyfriend is the best. Then Kellen shows up—tall, dark, way too handsome, carries weapons—and my life takes a fairy tales turn…

Before I start, I have to say I am obsessed with merfolk, always have been. This is what led me to jump at a chance to read a story based on/or around them.

This book was odd. It was short and whilst I liked the basis of the story, there just wasn’t enough of it. I felt like the name was a misdirection, as merfolk were barely touched on. They were just a passing thing to move the story on. I felt like parts of the story could be deemed as very unrealistic, her home life for example. There was no chemistry between her and the other characters. This made it hard for me to enjoy. The only relationship I could agree was normal-ish was Lana and her sister.

For a short story, it was ok. This series has potential, but it also kind of felt like a bad fanfiction at times.

2.5 out of 5 stars.

This book is interesting. I like the plot of the book. I enjoy fantasy books which is why this book caught my attention to begin with. It was quick read that I could not put down. The book was given for an honest review. I enjoyed the plot of the book. Not to give to much away I will say there was some really good parts like her love life and some not so good parts like her getting kicked out of school. I give this book four thumbs up.

If you’re looking for a fast, fun, fantasy novel, this book is for you. It was almost over too quickly, really, and could have done with a bit more backstory and fleshing out. It’s like an appetiser for the rest of the series – just enough to make you hungry, not enough to fill you up.

I really enjoyed the main character’s down to earth, slightly cynical attitude. She is refreshingly sensible and understandably confused at all the weird stuff that happens to and around her.

The main thing that stops me from enjoying this book fully is that it does not explain the rules of this world early on. I don’t mind ambiguity, secrets, or an unreliable narrator, but we don’t know if magic is a usual or accepted part of this world and how Lana’s ability fits into this. There are a couple of infodumps later that help, but by then the story is almost over.

I am also slightly put off by the pre-romance between Lana and Kellan, given she has a perfectly nice boyfriend already. A heroine who cheats is not one I am predisposed to like or empathise with.

Despite the above, this was an interesting concept and I would not be averse to picking up the next one in the series.

Well the great news for this book is I'm dying to read more! That's a big compliment in my mind.

The not so great news is I'm not dying to read the next one because of amazing plot... but I do really like our characters.
The main gal, Lana, is written like and sounds like a real person with real life problems including money, shelter, school, etc. It's always nice to read about someone relatable and genuine.

The actual Fae, fantasy part of this book is where it's weak. If you're hoping that mermaids make a large splash you will be sorely disappointed. If you're hoping for some grand sweeping world building you also won't get it. But there is some potential here. I almost feel like Mermaid Trouble is the free short book publishers give to readers to suck them into a new series. If that is the future of this story I think it will drive many new readers to Andy Mulberry.

Overall this is a short but sweet, fun read. Nothing mind blowing or show stopping but that's okay sometimes you just want to read about a gal whose got problems like yours plus some fairies to deal with. :)

Mermaids, fae, wolves, and apples abound in this new take on fairy tales. What if a fairy tale was happening and only a hunter could stop it? Would you step up and be that hunter?
Lana is a surf loving human lie detector who gets roped into hunting a fae creating fairy tales. With a sword, a hot fae, and a boyfriend on the side this book is a must read. The characters are all well developed and lovable. You find yourself needing to read the next book right after finishing this one.

This short book wasn’t about mermaids unfortunately. It was about hunting a mystical something that was putting some charms on people which made them grow mermaid tails, amongst other things. If my summary sounds vague, it’s because that is all I remember despite only just finishing it. The writing felt stilted, the story didn’t really get going until around 60%-70% of the way through the book, and I just couldn’t find myself caring about the characters.

If you are looking for a book about mermaids, this one isn’t it. It does have magic and unexpected events, all of which might have been much more exciting if I had been able to like the characters more. Having said all that, I did make it through to the end, there are some interesting potential themes which I could see being explored in future books, and the text itself is simple to read for younger teen readers.

I enjoyed the plot of the story (like mermaid stories), but I didn't enjoy the fact that Lana had been kicked out of school and din't enjoy her unrealistic, chaotic home life. Also, I thin the s word was used a bit too much

I really enjoyed the Mermaid Trouble and could easily contact to the characters. My only complaint is it was to short, I could have kept reading and was disappointed that it ended to soon. I looked forward to reading the second book.
