I just loved The Good Daughter by Karin, I was hooked from the first few pages. I just couldn't put it down.
I loved the twist at the end, I did not guess this but it made sense.
A great book to read this summer, you won't be disappointed.

Karin Slaughter doesn't disappoint and this was a great book. The story line was intriguing from the start and the suspense was carried all the way through. I have read many of her books and will continue to do so. I have already recommended this to my friends..

There's so much going on in The Good Daughter, it's a book I could really get my teeth into and enjoy.
Set in two different times, Charlie and Sams stories really captured me and getting the past story in seperate sections was a good way of keeping the audience. Some of the descriptions did drag out the story but overall I found it well constructed and a good read.

I bought the novella Last Breath before reading this. It's not necessary to enjoy and understand this but it added some depth for me as a reader.
One of the great pleasures of reading a book by Karin Slaughter is that a reader doesn't fully understand the story until the very end - no matter how good you might be at making predictions and deducing information. Reading one of her books is like listening to someone recall an event - you know there's more to it, you know some of the details and you pose questions as it's being told but you don't get the full story until you can step back a little and absorb it.

As ever, the characters feel real and flawed - even the ones you really like. There are no fairy tale princesses in these pages. The situations sound unrealistic but you cannot help but be absorbed in the descriptions of them. Karin Slaughter makes terrifying events truly unsettling. She doesn't shy away from gritty and vivid details not does she glorify them.

I don't want to write anything that could be considered a spoiler about the plot. I will say that the book is tightly plotted with many layers and I can't think of any loose ends.

A well-written novel that will stay with me for some time.

Stand alone book set in small town America where everyone knows (or think they know) your business
The claustrophobia and frustrations of the situations is palpable. Unexpected ending with characters you feel for

An excellent read by Karin Slaughter, I cannot believe I have not read any of her previous novels.

This was fantastic story of murder within a close family in a small town in the US. At times it was so graphic that I actually felt sick, Karin Slaughter does an amazing job of detailing the horrors faced by the family during the fateful night 28 years ago.

I loved all the characters especially lawyer Rusty Quinn both father and husband to this awful crime that blew his family apart.

I will most certainly be reading previous and new books by Karin Slaughter!

Fabulous book as always from Karin. Couldn't put it down!

This book is an incredible study of humanity.

The main characters are all very different and all add a lot to the story. There is serious discussion about controversial topics in here- the death penalty, abortion, rape & murder only being the most prevalent- that is handled very well indeed.

It's also one of those books where there is no black and white. No character is totally evil or totally good, there is so much nuance and sensitivity to the current situation as well as the backstories of every character. I am so impressed with how the characterisation has been handled.

This is definitely a character driven book, with development of each of them very impressive and immersive. I feel like I know the characters personally because they were so perfectly explored and written by the author.

Also, the plot is fantastic, with so many twists and turns that you're kept guessing all of the way through. It is also incredibly intense and has had me awake reading later than usual more than once.

I'll definitely be looking out for more of Karin Slaughter's work.

Utterly compelling, with excellent characters. I loved both the modern day story and the slow revelations of the old story

I found this a bit of a slow burn. You jump back and forward a bit so you see things from both girls point of view which gave an interesting element to the book. Another well written book by a talented author

I have never read anything by this author but will certainly be investigating the back catalogue. This was a book that made you eager to find out what happened to the characters. There were lots of twists and turns and a real insight into how secrets can ruin people's lives and relationships when the intention was the opposite. The characters were all complex and their reliance on each other while trying to deal with the horrors of what happened to them made this an engaging read.

I haven't read any Karin Slaughter for a while, but having read this latest book I don't think I will wait so long before I read the next one. The story of two sisters who endured a most traumatic event in their childhood, and the present day murder which brings back the unwelcome past and forces them to confront what happened on that long ago day. I really liked the way the sisters were described, their reactions felt very real and believable. The murder which they are trying to solve in the present time, and the happenings of 28 years previously, provide two puzzles which keep the reader guessing. And I always like books which give an insight into the criminal justice system in America, which this does - the courtroom scene in the middle of the book is classic.
I have given this 5 stars because I thoroughly enjoyed it and it was a quick and satisfying read.

This book was a fantastic read. Initially with the beginning chapter I did think that I was not going to like it but it quickly grabbed pace and had me completely compelled to keep reading.

The Quinn family made up of Charlotte, Gamma, Rusty and Sam are a family with a violent and tragic history that has impacted them greatly. Alternating between timelines we start with the devastating altercation with the 'Culpeppers' who in the blink of an eye rob two teenage daughters of their mother. It also impacts Sam physically and Charlotte emotionally in every aspect of their life. Flashbacks to this event are often extremely descriptive and very vivid. It may make others feel uncomfortable but it did completely pull me in.

Flashing forward in time we again meet the Quinns, minus Gamma, who are all making a living as lawyers. Charlotte finds herself at the centre of a school shooting involving a teenage girl with learning difficulties. Knowing how strongly school shootings can pull on the emotions of everyone it is the controversial Rusty Quinn who takes on the girl's case which ultimately will lead to tragic consequences. It is up to the estranged Sam and Charlotte to try to piece together the mystery of this shooting whilst still having to deal with the trauma of their past lives that haunts them to the very day.

I absolutely loved this book and I really warmed to the characters, especially Sam. I just could not wait to read it every night. Full of amazing twists and turns I would recommend this book to anyone who does like a good thriller.

I had to give up on this book I really found the read uncomfortable. It may not have been helped that my loved grandmother passed away while I was part way through I tried to persevere but I really can't get my head around all the violence so I have reluctantly had to give up I do not feel its fair to post any public reviews on a book I couldnt finish so I will not post a review on Goodread or Amazon.

After reading the description and the prequel for this novel, I knew I had to read it soon. This book was INTENSE! It honestly had me feeling ALL THE FEELS. I really did both laugh and cry while reading this novel. "The Good Daughter" had me in its clutches from page one until the very end, and I'm still feeling the after-effects.

The book opens in 1989. Samantha Quinn is fifteen years-old and her younger sister, Charlie is thirteen. The Quinn family are living in an old farmhouse after someone burned their house down with a Molotov cocktail. The attack was likely someone angry at lawyer father, Rusty Quinn who often defends men many lawyers would never represent.

But not even two weeks later, another attack of violence and brutality changes the lives of everyone in the Quinn family forever.

Twenty-eight years later, Charlie Quinn has followed in her father's footsteps and is now a lawyer in small town Pikeville. But that's where the similarities between Charlie and her father end. Charlie passed up jobs with big firms in the city. She moved back and decided she wanted to help normal, everyday people who found themselves in trouble and didn't have someone smart enough, or even who cared enough to try to get them out of trouble.

Charlie's husband, Ben is a prosecutor and she is a defense attorney. Her father, Rusty Quinn defends robbers, drug dealers, and murderers. The people in town either loved him or hated him. It depended on whether or not they or their family members had ever needed his services.

Charlie is tough and can be quite impulsive. She'll often act without thinking of the consequences. For example: shoving a man who slapped his wife in the grocery store, antagonizing a group of thugs, or going alone to rough areas of town in the middle of the night.

But when Charlie witnesses a horrific act of violence, old feelings and memories rise to the surface, forcing her to face things that she tried hard to suppress. But most secrets don't stay buried forever. You may think you can put your secrets in a "box on the shelf" but eventually those boxes either burst open on their own or you open them up to deal with them.

I know I've said this before and it has happened before, but I did NOT want to put this book down. I was up until after 4am reading. I needed to know what was going to happen next.

"The Good Daughter" is the kind of novel that evokes a wide variety of emotions, leaving you feeling like you've been hit by a truck. At times it was so intense that I really was holding my breath in anticipation of what was coming next....

I will warn readers, that there are some parts that are very difficult to read, the subject matter can be quite upsetting. However, I was able to skim those parts without missing much of the story-line.

After an author has written so many books, I feel like it must be very difficult to come up with new plots that twist and turn. But Karin Slaughter does it. She can stop me in my tracks with one twisty sentence. I don't think I saw any of the twists coming. The main characters and the supporting characters were fantastically well-developed. They all added something to the story.

I wanted to discuss this book with everyone. "The Good Daughter" is an addictive and compelling psychological thriller with a mind-bending and thoroughly engrossing plot.
Highly recommended!

Thank you to Netgalley and HarperCollins for an advanced readers copy of this book for me to read in exchange for my honest review.

The story line was wonderful and had me intrigued all the way through.. The terrible start to life that Charlie and Sam had resonated through the book and the reader could feel the intensity of their emotions during their lives apart and together. The book was full of life and the different chapters depicting different characters added to the reading, I have only given it four stars as I felt that there was a little too much repetition in the details and action of the terrible night at the farm when their mother died. I can see why it was included but the first time I doubted that I was even reading where I had left off and I found this slightly disconcerting. I loved all the characters who were so well described and the last part and the ending were just amazingly well written. As a book I Loved it but would have preferred less repetition.

Enjoyed it once I got into it but took a while, not the usual Karin Slaughter much preffered her normal books.

My review as posted.

An horrific, brutal attack that two young girls scarred emotionally and physically twenty eight years before. The girls, now women come face to face with their nightmares again as a new tragedy has struck. Small town Pikeville is the setting and Charlotte and Samantha are the girls and together with their dad, Rusty are lawyers with a passion for fighting for the not so lucky ones with big bank balances.

The Good Daughter is fundamentally a character driven tale of how a nightmare event can change your life for good. Packed with secrets that slowly unfolds, Slaughter paints an absorbing tale that was beautifully told as we got to know the sisters and their defence attorney father. It's vividly told and the characterisations were done brilliantly. Complex and perfectly detailed bringing visual details to life cutting back on the shock and gore here and telling a story full of emotion and heartache. I absolutely loved it and am surprised that some readers seemed to find certain elements shocking. Bad things happen in life and the attack scenes in this book were depicted thoughtfully without going for over the top shock factor. In my opinion anyway.

The novel perfectly captures how a small town works; the gossip, the bitchiness and the lack of cosmopolitan thinking that you would find in big cities. For me the highlight was Rusty himself and what unfolds toward the end nearly broke my heart. Now there's a daddy's love.

I haven't read much by Slaughter yet. Indeed, this is only my third foray into her world, but she is definitely a class act when she gets it on the money. I don't doubt I will be digging out book two of the Grant County series soon. I got me some catching up to do!!

Much appreciation of my review copy. I highly recommend!
