Sam and Charlie were witness to their mother being murdered and both were left traumatised with both mental and physical scars, they have learned to cope in different ways but not together.. 28 years later a shooting at the local school brings their lives back together where each of them use their differing legal skills to uncover the truth.
With lots of twists and turns this book will keep you guessing until the very end. The characters are very complex and this only serves to draw you in even deeper.

This is a well written book about the complexity of relationships, the damage that can be wrought by negative self perception and the lifelong damage that comes with traumatic events at an early age. My only disappointment was that I felt more could have been done with Kelly's trial and the outcome of this. I was emotionally invested in her by the end of the book and wanted to see this aspect addressed as well.

This is a great thriller that kept me intrigued throughout. The characters were engaging and the plot fast paced. This is my first book by this author but I’ll defintely be reading more in future.

The Good Daughter is an intense, sometimes deeply disturbing, character-driven thriller set to the backdrop of two horrific tragedies.
When they were teenagers, two armed men entered Samantha and Charlotte's home, murdered their mother, and turned their lives upside down. Both are left with physical and mental scars and are unable to be around each other, serving as a constant reminder of that horrible night. But twenty-eight years later a shocking tragedy tangles both women in its web, bringing up memories of that night they can't escape.
The book is complex, compelling and deliciously dark, and is also graphic, intense and gritty, which doesn't bother me, but is a definite caution for some. If you like dark crime thrillers, this is the book for you. The story is completely engrossing, with two very dramatic crimes intricately tying the story together.
Thank you so much to Netgalley for letting me read The Good Daughter by Karin Slaughter in exchange for my honest review.

The Good Daughter by Karen Slaughter is on of those books that once you start you just can't put it down. It is the story of two sisters, Charlotte and Samantha. They are the daughters of Rusty Quinn, a defence lawyer who will take on the cases no one else will. Due to this he is not a popular character.
One day two masked men break into the sisters house at gunpoint looking for their father with a gun. The daughters watch as their mother is killed in front of them. The two daughters are led into the woods at gun point.
Flash forward twenty eight years later and one of the sisters accidentally walks into a high school shooting. The suspect is a young girl but the there are some strange circumstances surrounding the shooting. Charlotte gets involved and many secrets start to come out.
This is a brilliant book that will keep you at the edge of your seat wondering what is going to happen next. There are many twists and turns as the secrets are gradually revealed. The language is descriptive and really draws you into the book so you can almost see the scenes playing out in front of you.
If you are looking for a good read this summer and you love suspense thrillers I would highly recommend this book.

Omg I've just finished reading the good daughter and what a book. It's absolutely fantastic. Sam and Charlie suffer an unthinkable crime, and the story of how and why this happened is just brilliant. I don't want to give the plot away but I would definitely say if you get the chance to read this book, you should it's just great.

I've never read this author before, it taken me a while to get in to this book but the story has kept me reading as I wanted to know what happening, the book picks up towards the middle and keeps you engrossed. Loved the ending x

The story revolves around Charlotte and Samantha Quinn’s family who were attacked 28 years ago. This left the sisters physically and mentally damaged and their mother dead.
Charlie follows in her father’s footsteps and becomes a lawyer and when there is a shooting at Pikeville Middle School it brings both sisters together again and raises memories they’d hoped would stay buried.
This story is an emotional roller coaster. The characters are well developed and the whole novel is cleverly plotted.
Thank you to Harper Collins, NetGalley and Karin Slaughter for the ARC, in exchange for my honest and unbiased review.
Great read. Highly recommended.

I received a free ebook version of this book from Netgalley. Thankyou to both Harper Collins and Netgalley for the chance to read this! Mt review remains honest.
My very first Karin Slaughter book and I am not disappointed! It's not quite what I expected either, but this is a fantastic first impression of this author.
The Good Daughter follows the lives of Charlie and Sam, two sisters who suffered a horrific attack when they were younger that left them damaged and their mother dead. Their father is a renowned criminal lawyer who represents the indefensible in a small town setting. In the present time, the story surrounds a school shooting and the unravelling of a mystery.
This is a crime novel, but the characters and relationships have so much more importance. There is so much to think about here: the feelings the sisters have about what happened, the relationship between them, the relationship the sisters have with their father, how they think about their mother. The complexity of these characters is just astonishing. Charlie and Sam will stay with me for a long time for their raw pain and strength in carrying on. Their father Rusty is also one of my favourite characters. He's wise and stubborn and thinks about the world in such a different way. He is a good man to those who think of him in entirely the opposite way, and I so love him for it. Even characters like Kelly and Mrs Pinkman have their own stories to tell.
The story itself is very good. I did somewhat guess the resolution of the shooting (<spoiler> That Mrs Pinkman was involved</spoiler>) but not exactly how it happened, and I certainly didn't anticipate the other twists! This story has such an emotional undertone that brings this ray of light into what is otherwise a very dark tale. The end even had me tearing up a little! This book was incredibly difficult to read at times and I would stay well clear if you're sensitive to rape at all.
My only issue with this book was with the pacing. I did find it hard to get into initially and it's quite slow, but I was very interested in the story. It's simply not a book that's going to be easy to blitz through.
Overall-a great book and a very talented author.

A pacy, standalone, psychological suspense novel from one of the genre's growing masters, Karin Slaughter.
This is a good read from start to finish with elements that make it stand out from others in the genre in that it is so much more than just a crime/suspense novel. Interwoven with great insight into relationships which give great colour to the characters without ever detracting from the pace, you'll not be left disappointed. Enough of a meaty read to satisfy this is a worthy addition to any bookshelf.
With thanks to NetGalley, the Publishers and Author for the copy.

The first Karin Slaughter book I have read and surely won’t be the last. A truly shocking beginning told in graphic detail that brought horrific images to mind. A dreadful crime committed against the Quinn family due to Rusty Quinn being a defense lawyer. A position that many in their small community couldn’t understand and one that brought danger and ideas of revenge to their door. Life somehow moved on and the story picks up some 28 years later when the remaining members of the family are forced to relive memories they would rather keep buried. Relationships are severly tested amid further shocking events that threaten to tear apart the fragile lives they have built for themselves. A long, detailed story that kept me hooked throughout. My only complaint is that I did guess one of the shocking twists! However, this certainly did not detract from my enjoyment of the book, rather I felt quite smug! A great read and I look forward to reading more by the same author.

I loved this Karin Slaughter book. Slightly different from previous books. It tells the story of 2 sisters, Sam and Charlie and the after affects of a shooting in which their mother is killed. The story seems to start repeating itself at one point, I thought there was a glitch with my kindle ! stick with it as gradually the full horrors are revealed. Everything is not quite as it seems and the girls story is heartbreaking. I read this book in just a couple of days, I cold not get enough. Highly recommended.

I loved this book!!
It was absolutely gripping, I couldn’t wait to read it... I totally loved the way that the story unfolded. I liked the main characters Charlie and Sam and enjoyed how we learnt about their history as well as about them now.
It had a mixture of emotions throughout ranging from sadness to comedy. I don’t want to give any spoilers away but the storyline was brilliant and I have no idea how the author came up with the storyline as it genuinely was put together brilliantly.

Oh wow! This book is intense and definitely not for the faint hearted. This dark thriller has everything including drama, suspense, emotion, superb characters and be wanted......your emotions will be all over the place reading this book. Karin has done a fantastic job of portraying the relationships between the family members. Definitely a 5 star rating and i cant wait for Karin's next book.

Karin slaughtr's Pretty Girls has always been my idea of great thriller / horror writing. I really looked forward to this book but was very disappointed. The first few chapters tweet pact, full of suspense and had me in total thrall but it all fell off after that. Parts of the book were reiterated twice or three times with perhaps the odd additional information. The characters were totally unlike able and the ending was signposted so clearly I could have written it. If this had been my first book by the author I wouldn't be looking for more

This book was amazing! It was so full of twists and turns that I couldn't put it down. I haven't read any of Karen Slaughter s books before but I would definitely love to read more. The suspense in the book builds and keeps you guessing. I would 100% recommend this.

Gruesome and graphic are two words that spring to mind. A story of a family of two daughters who's father is so devoted to his work as a lawyer defending criminals that his family receives the backlash from affected family members of the victims. The young girls see their mother shot and killed in their kitchen and have to suffer horrendous harm and rape as a result. This book had me from the beginning to end, in fact the end came to fast. It touches on corruption within the police/district attorney's office and how innocent people get blamed as a result. The daughters are severely affected both physically and mentally as they grow up, but manage to reach adulthood and professional life, by dealing with their ordeal in different ways,

The Good Daughter by Karin Slaughter is a contemporary murder thriller that will have the reader consumed from the start.
The action is set in present day and twenty eight years earlier. Bit by bit the reader pieces together what happened earlier as we understand how lives were altered.
One day, frozen in time, impacts today and tomorrow. Many lives and the whole town were caught up in the fall-out.
The novel shows how our choices impact our lives. "Bad choices, bad deeds can corrupt you." We will always have the choice to do the right thing.
There were some truly good people in the novel. Some are motivated by money, greed, position and power. Corruption is rife. Others, in contrast, see hurting people and want to help.
Life is never purely black and white. there are many shades of grey.
Revenge motivates some. Atonement motivates others. Innocents get trapped in between.
Karin Slaughter produced a fabulous plotline that gripped me from the start. Her characters were well drawn, eliciting an emotional response from the reader. There was quite a lot of bad language which I do not like, but I recognise the necessity of use for the realism of the characters. It certainly did not distract from this excellent story.
I received this book for free from Net Galley. A favourable review was not required and all views expressed are my own.

This book, which I received from Netgalley was such a chilling story on so many levels.
Each major character, and there are quite a few, is vividly brought to life as the reader learns about their varied pasts. However, some of the detail sometimes got in the way of the plot and I just wanted it to move on but boy when it did my attention was totally held and I quite often felt somewhat traumatised myself by what I learnt. It's not an easy read but it is nevertheless a thoroughly good read.

A truly gripping crime thriller that kept me on edge through each page. Two sisters, Charlotte and Samantha have their world turned upside down by the savage murder of their mother followed by their own brutal assaults. Sam is left fighting for her life while Charlie holds the guilt of that day and a burning secret that she keeps locked inside. The story alternates between that terrible day and the present, when Charlie is present at the local school as a shooting takes place. There father, Rusty prepares to defend the shooter but is found injured at home and Sam returns home for the first time in many years and is persuaded to take on the initial court case. The obvious torment the sisters have suffered over the years begins to surface as they begin to re-establish a relationship and they discover what really happened on both of those terrible days. A fabulously written book that I was sad had come to an end. A definite must read
