I simply could not get I to this book. Maybe I was ruined with the musical, and now the book just wasn't as enticing.
Underwhelming but cute. I didn't start to enjoy it until I pretended that these weren't actual historical figures. If you're a fan of the musical just disregard that now.
Thank you NetGalley for the ARC! Good, young adult, historical fiction, romance - that definitly has Hamilfan (fans of Hamilton) appeal. This tells the meeting of Alexander Hamilton and how they ended up married. Eliza is quite the intelligent and determined character here - a plus. The series continues, but I'm not sure whether or not I'll keep up with it - not that I didn't enjoy it, I'll just have to be in the mood to read on.
I loved this sneak peek into the writing of Alex and Eliza. I'm familiar with the musical Hamilton, and it made this a more exciting read as most teens will already have a little background to the events.
Like most people right now, I am riding high on the Hamilton wave. When I saw a trilogy had been written, I decided to give it a go. It's amazingly well written for what I was expecting to be a usual sort of easy read YA novel. The details in character and language were superb. The book is chock full of wonderful historical tidbits and while there was definitely quite a bit added to it (and I only know this from reading more historically accurate accounts; I am by no means an expert) I found it fun and even at parts, nerve wracking! The story is romantic and soft while not being too spicy for the kiddos. Anyone who enjoyed Lin Manuel Miranda's masterpiece of a play is sure to enjoy and appreciate the first installment of this trilogy. I can hardly wait to sink my teeth into the next one!
I adored this story all about Alex and Eliza.! De la Cruz is a master or romance and seeing her flex her skills in this setting was a treat! I adore the real life figures who inspired this story and htis kept the momentum going, the story is well paced and the dialogue always makes you feel engaged.
I received a sampler (including the prologue and first 4 chapters) of this book from NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I, like many others, was mainly interested in this book because of the amazingness that is Hamilton. As time went on, I'll admit I wasn't sure about reading a fictionalized history of a real couple.
Starting this book it immediately became obvious that the author has done her research on this time and these people. I loved Eliza's character even more than I did in Hamilton; she is much more her own person as opposed to being in Angelica's shadow. I also enjoyed that the book alternates between the perspectives of Eliza and Alex.
I will update my review if and when I read the book in its entirety. At this point I have several other books I have to prioritize, but I would like to read this when I can.
For fans of the hit musical Hamilton or those who enjoy historical fiction. I don't think this will have side readership in middle school.
I'm excited that Hamilton has brought such an enthusiasm for this corner of history. de la Cruz taking Alexander Hamilton's story from the romantic perspective is very smart, as there's clearly a market open for all the fans interested in the romance portrayed in the play. I'm glad this is out in the world, putting a new spin on historical novels! Eager to read more in the future!
This was very charming and I saw a lot of promise in this sneak peek! Will definitely have to check out the full novel!
There were parts I swooned over, and parts I cringed over. I loved the nods to Hamilton and thought this was a fun, easy read.
A sweet and overall enjoyable book, doesn't really stand out in the onslaught of fiction being published around Alexander Hamilton on the back of the musical's success though. The pacing drags at points, though there are some lovely, stand out scenes.
Wow, I really didn’t like this book. I listened to this e-audiobook via Overdrive.
The cons: I didn’t enjoy the large bits of info dumping. I thought that it was too much, done in an obvious way. Show don’t tell. Also, the author went into explaining ‘the procedure’ which is the small pox vaccination. It was of great importance at the time, but it felt like 15 minutes explained the procedure, the soldiers reacting to the procedure, etc etc.
The author saw the play and was inspired to write this YA historical fiction where little is know about their courtship, so she took liberties and made up a story. I fear teens will read this as actual history. Did this book need to have such last minute/stop her before she walks down the aisle with the wrong man. Eliza’s mother was portrayed as a hard, practical woman, a heartless woman, then a kind hearted mother at the end. Also, felt like the author unnecessarily put in the near rape/physical assault scene with Henry Livingstone, is that too much liberty with the story? Alex thwarts Benedict Arnold?
None of the letter writing between Eliza and Alex was referenced. None of the other Schuyler siblings were mentioned beyond the 3 sisters and 2 brothers (Alex also wrote to sister Margarita). Eliza’s letters to Alex are lost to history, but there are Alex’s letters to Eliza. Am I a Hamilton super fan? No. I learned things from google searching to see how valid the plot of this book is.
This book mostly appeals to Hamilton superfans, but it will turn them off the most.
This was read a long time ago but I never posted anything but it was okay. It’s not amazing but I was interested in reading further so I’m glad I did check this out
Unfortunately this did not work out for me, so I ended up not finishing
I adored this history novel adapted from the Alexander Hamilton & Eliza Love story. The witty banter, sweet letters, and compelling characters make this a wonderful love story for teens.
I read another book by this author and realized her writing style is not for me, so I know this one would also not be a fit for me.
Oh, how I love a good romance where they start out hating each other...and the fact that it's based off the lives of Alexander Hamilton and Elizabeth Schuyler? Bonus.
Quick wit, good pacing, strong characters, and I love the detail of the Revolutionary Period. Cannot wait to read the entire story!!
I am slightly obsessed with Hamilton. Therefore, when I saw this on NetGalley, I knew I had to request it. I loved this preview. It was interesting to see more of Alexander and Eliza's lives together. I can't wait to read the full book.
I’m A Sucker for Hamilton!
De La Cruz’s previous books have been alright but didn’t grab me and could drop them easily.
Teared up at the description of the story. Teared up on Hamilton's POV talking about slaves and writing his way out of hell.
Cannot stop hearing the musical in my head and seeing it behind my eyelids. It’s synced perfectly together.
“Do with him what you will.”
Oh. My. God. I need to read the rest of this!
