How to do Homework Without Throwing Up by Trevor Romain is a children’s non fiction book that is currently scheduled for release on April 1 2017. Homework isn’t going anywhere, and kids need to learn to do it. This updated classic provides specific tips for starting, doing, and finishing homework—and maybe even laughing while they learn. Kids will also learn how to make a homework schedule, when to do the hardest homework (first!), the benefits of doing homework, and more—serious suggestions delivered with wit and humor because laughter makes learning fun. Refreshed to address modern distractions like the Internet and electronic devices, this updated classic (with hilarious full-color illustrations) helps kids see that they can handle their homework and emphasizes how terrific it feels when they finish.
How to do Homework Without Throwing Up is a simply written book that tries to get young readers to understand that while doing homework is not fun, it is necessary and fighting it only makes things worse. The ideas, suggestions, and tools that the book offers are all pretty simple to implement- setting up a routine and having a snack being among my personal favorites. The illustrations are fun and emphasizes the ideas that the text is trying to get across. This could be helpful for families struggling with big homework battles. However, I found that the text includes things that would only be relevant to older students, while seeming to be aimed at a younger audience. It felt a bit like those skits that school kids are forced to sit through in school assemblies- where the points being made are good but the delivery is a little to corny to really stick with the target audience.
My husband would say this book was perfect for me, homework has never been my strong point which was evident during a five year degree. Ok, so I know this book is for tweens and teens but there are valuable lessons to be learnt from this book for everyone and all done in the name of fun.
Starting with a chapter that says Do Not Read This and the first line saying.... You Peeked! Ha! Now that I have your attention. Yep the book had my attention! Trevor Romain starts with some positives such as how homework helps you grow and learn. He also uses positive reinforcement with phrases such as "I can do my homework without throwing up!"
With talk of tantrums, going bald, making homework disappear, blaming others and denying you even have homework Trevor Romain won't accept any excuses. Romain shares how to set schedules and still make time for fun, and the suggestion of finding a homework buddy is one of his best tips because I know it worked for me.
The book not only concentrates on positive reinforcement but also about snacking on the right foods to keep energy levels up and not being distracted by technology. Another really positive section of the book is encouraging the reader to seek help if they don't understand the homework. So many children just leave it because they are too embarrassed, to afraid to ask or don't want to look silly. I applaud you Trevor Romain for giving tweens and teens the tools and positive reinforcement to seek the help they need so they don't get behind and don't lose their confidence.
I think this will be a well loved book even though it is about homework. The humour and positiveness will go a long way in engaging with the audience it is meant for.
The Nike sneaker slogan is "Just do it!" Homework should be treated the same way. Just do it! Kicking a desk, breaking pencils or throwing homework out will not help, the homework will still need to be completed.
"How to Do Homework Without Throwing Up" by Trevor Romain addresses every possible aspect of homework. He discusses the necessity for homework and how it fine tunes skills already learned and creates practice for skills not yet fully assimilated.
Many helpful suggestions abound for helping students successfully complete homework assignments. Eating a healthy snack first provides brain food.Doing homework in the same place each day, prioritizing and doing the most difficult work first and telling your parent or an adult if you need help are some helpful tips. Some children might want to attend a homework club or work with a study buddy.
Humorous illustrations by Steve Mark, further demonstrate how completing homework increases self-esteem and the comical foibles of trying to make excuses for not getting the job done.
"How To Do Homework Without Throwing Up" helps teachers and parents start a conversation with young learners, especially third to fifth graders. Completing homework and consistently reading will translate into future school success. Additionally, author Romain discusses learning difficulties including the need for glasses, being bullied and the student requiring extra help for school success. This gem of a book should be a staple in any home or school library.

This book was crazy adorable!! I have a 7 year old daughter who has been struggling with wanting to do her homework. So this was a perfect book to introduce her too. She thought it was cute and funny... let's see if it helps with the homework!
Trevor Romain has written a surprisingly humorous and educational book. Although it’s mostly common sense because it’s written to kids it should actually be very helpful. Along with the wonderful advice on how to create schedules, avoiding excuses, and the positivity that comes with doing a job well done, the art work that is included to illustrate everything adds a layer of amusement that should help kids want to read this book.
There are intelligent but fun mantras that parents can print out and put up near where their child does their homework to help motivate them. As a parent I learned quite a few things from this book on ways to help my child make homework time easier.
It’s not just for young kids, high school students and even college students would do well to read this book too and apply the lessons to make studying easier. I also loved the healthy snack tips so you can avoid the inevitable sugar crash that will prevent you from working properly by eating the wrong thing.
If you have a child, teen, college student or if you fit any of these categories yourself you really need to check this book out. It’s not very long which will make it easier on those short attention-spans and I bet putting this book into practice will pay off with some very good grades!
