This is one of those books that you hope you never need, but of course any pet owner, or anyone who knows pet-owners, will sadly need. I haven't used it yet, but can see that it will be valuable when the time comes.
Nothing worse than losing a pet, in my opinion. People know they will die, but they will usually long, wonderful lives before death claims them. pets on the other had, never live nearly long enough and it is a killer heartache when they die. I know this book relates more to dog owners (I've had two), but can be read by any pet lover (have had a number of cats, some of whom have died and nearly taken me with them, it hurts to lose pet kids.) Good book to read with kids, but anyone could benefit from it.
This book was sweet, slow-moving, and a little odd. But I think that, for the right person in the right circumstances, this book could be just the ticket.

So often on Facebook my fans talk about the loss of a beloved furbaby. It is shattering and everyone deals with grief differently. Nothing is worse for them than someone saying, it is only a cat or a dog. Pets, like meow, are members of the family and the mourning is every bit as deep as any other family member.
This is a good book, written so a young person could pick it up and understand the concepts but also not so juvenile that an adult might find it cloying. It strikes a good balance on how to look at the wonderful times together and the sadness, anger, denial and all the other stages of emotion that follow a death.
Whether or not you wish to embrace some of the concepts like The Great Play or the Rainbow Bridge it offers methods of coping and moving forward that would work for all ages. It is not a deep philosophical debate on religion or anything else. It is simply a means to deal with the grief and appreciate the good things that were shared. It is the love that causes the grief and you cannot have one without the other.
This would be a good book for someone who is trying to deal with loss, someone who has experienced loss and someone who wants to be prepared for the inevitable loss.
I give it four purrs and two paws up.
Some books come to you for a certain time in your life . This is one of those books. This is a exceptionally written beautifully crafted book about grief for our animals and what it means to us. If you have loved animals through your life then you have experienced great loss. This book is for all of us that love and have lost our beloved animals. Its endearing, heartfelt and infinity touching . Through these pages you will find your own grief and feelings of uncompromising grief validated . I urge everyone grieving the loss of any pet to read this book. I have not lost a dog but my 19 year old cat and this book helped me cope with her loss. I highly recommend to all grieving a pet loss to read this important work on grief.
Great book for adults and children. So much valuable insight that we can use in life.
What a great book. As I am about to say good-bye to my dog of 17 years this book hit home.
