A delightful continuation of Bowen's Her Royal Spyness series - as "time" marches on, Georgie is touched by the dark clouds beginning to form over Europe as the repressive influence of Hitler and Mussolini reach the highest levels of British governance. Well plotted, if a little off-balance because of the light-hearted romance angle juxtaposed against the serious reality of British admiration for the powerful forces being unleashed.
I docked this book a star because the author didn't let Georgie apprehend the murderer. The whole book was about her and how she is solving the crime and then here comes Darcy at the very end.
Lovely! A delightful read from start to finish. Another Royal Spyness story is always welcome. Rhys Bowen does not disappoint with her newest installment ful of pre-WWII intrigue, royal affairs, clinics in the Alps, and of course of a body. Although, one wonders is Georgina and Darcy will ever manage to tie the knot... but that leaves us wanting another, so please, keep them coming!
It is time for the next chapter in Georgie's life adventures! I enjoy the series overall, and #11 does not disappoint.
The last installment, Crowned and Dangerous took us to Ireland to meet Darcy's family. I really felt the absence of Belinda and Georgie's mother. They are certainly present in On Her Majesty's Frightfully Secret Service.
From Ireland, Georgie returns to London, pays a short visit to Binky and Fig, and her Grandfather before being politely ordered to Italy by the Queen. This time, she is sent to watch her cousin the prince, currently under the influence of That Woman. Luckily, Belinda happens to be nearby, so Georgie can look in on her while playing watchdog.
As per usual, Georgie surprisingly encounters her Mother, an old school friend, and eventually, her love, while becoming involved in another murder. Ah! Queenie is absent this time around, as she is back in Ireland.
I liked the return of her Mother, and have grown really attached to Belinda, and am eager to see what her next move will be. At times, I grow frustrated with Georgie's silliness.
An enjoyable read.
Rhys Bowen is absolutely delightful. Read them all. No matter what series you pick up...you'll have an enjoyable, engaging mystery.
I love any book written by Rhys Bowen and “On Her majesty’s Frightfully Secret Service” is no exception. This book is part of her Royal Spyness Mysteries series. Lady Georgiana Rannoch is engaged to Darcy of Kilhenny. He is Catholic and she, being a cousin of the King, is not. In order to marry, she must give up the rite of succession and this must be approved by Parliament. The Queen summons her to tea and Georgie is sure this is about her marriage. In talking with the Queen, she is asked to perform a little subtle spying on the Prince of Wales and his lady friend, Mrs. Wallace Simpson. The fact that Wallis is a Mrs. and that being two-times over, is cause for concern to the royal family. The Queen, the Prince’s mother, makes arrangements for Georgie to be invited to a house party in Italy. She is to keep an eye on the Prince and his “friend” and let the Queen know if Mrs. Simpson has acquired her divorce. Georgie is also going to Italy to help a friend after the house party.
Among a varied cast of characters at this house party something sinister is happening. Georgie, being the sleuth that she is, cannot keep her nose out of it. When someone turns up dead, is she the suspect? Even Darcy is involved in this little drama. Everyone has a motive. Some are planning political allegiances which would turn the tide of the current unrest in Germany.
If you enjoy historical fiction along with a little mystery, you will love this book and the way Ms. Bowen brings real figures in history to life in her novels. I received a Kindle edition of this book from NetGalley.com.
This was another great installment in the royal spyness series. I love Georgie as a protagonist, and I look forward to these books every year. This one did not disappoint and I really enjoyed the historical elements in this one. The murder didn't occur unto over halfway through the book which might irritate some, but it didn't bother me because I was so interested in the personal dramas of the characters. I recommend this series over and over again at the library and I will continue to do so.
Georgie is at it again in this latest installment of the historical mystery series "Her Royal Spyness". This time she is in Italy and the murder is not what it seems, with a few twists. This is a fun and mostly lighthearted read with some serious moments. I always enjoy these books and can't wait until Georgie and Darcy finally get married someday.
