Absolutely loved this story!! I love when the initial friction between the 2 main characters leads to a strong attraction and these 2 had it in spades. This story had it all, it was well written with plenty of romance, suspense and action, what more could you ask for?
When I saw this book at Netgalley I did some recon and found there are 2 more books in this series (from 2014) and they all had glowing reviews. So, I took a chance and clicked request. I have read the other 2 books first and wow, can this author write!
I especially enjoyed the second book about Jack and Lowry and our MC Will is one of the secondary characters. He deserved his own book.
Although I did think the storyline was a bit like in the last book I thoroughly enjoyed it. At first dr Angel Treherne comes across as an icy bitchy woman, but that is only to protect herself. She and Will were obviously very suited, as both had to deal with issues from the past. There could have been a bit more chemistry. The ending was really satisfying.
This is the second book from this author I've read having heard loads on social media about Ms Black. And like her other book I really didn't like the cover as I'm not a fan of black ops or military type books and esp not guns.
Yet given that I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. Most of the way thru it was a solid 4 stars but the ending was just fab and completely had me saying wow and going all in with the 5 stars.
If you like military ops, spies and etc you'll probably want a sixth star!
I loved how British it was, the scenes underground were creepy and like totally yucky!
Ms Black's characters are rich and multi layered, indeed the whole story was so interesting. And with plenty of 'action'! As I've not read the first book I can guarantee that this works as a stand alone
A good plot. Interesting and original. I liked how the story started and ended.
This was a deep, thought-provoking book about the horrors of childhood trauma and the effects of war (both foreign and domestic) on the human psyche. I experienced so many emotions right alongside the characters, whether it was Angel, Will, or one of their family members, it opened up all my senses and left me feeling.
Will Berwick is running on sheer willpower. After being seriously injured on a mission and then learning his fiance killed herself while he was away, he is struggling to keep it together. Soon after being assigned to therapy with Dr. Angel Treherne, his superior tells him that he needs to get her to reveal the location of her brother, a scientist on the run with top secret intel, by any means necessary. Reluctant at first, Will decides to try to warm her up enough to get close to her. But a series of tragic mistakes leads to them being taken hostage, and as they get closer to each other, so does their past.
There was such angst between Will and Angel that I frequently doubted whether I would really be rooting for them to get together for real. Angel ranged from icy, reserved professional to wild sex kitten really fast, and it left my head spinning. It wasn't until halfway through the book, when I saw the real Angel, that I began to understand her and where she came from. She was traumatized as a child, so of course she is messed up as an adult. But she is still so strong and doesn't take any crap from Will. Will had issues of his own, and it was sad to see him battle his own emotions. When the walls came down for them both, it was huge and a relief. Their love shone so brightly in the end.
This is my first book I have read in the series, but it's actually the third book the author has written for the Black Ops Heroes series. I am eager to read the first two and learn more about the team.
Hard to Protect by Incy Black was the first book I've read by this author and it was all over the place. Decent amount of action, but it didn't flow with the plot, it just jumped out at you and didn't flow. I didn't connect with the characters and had a hard time feeling a love connection between them. Interesting story overall though and that saved it from being two stars.L solid 3 is my vote. Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the ARC in exchange for a honest review.
I was unable to put this book down. And the ending left me saying "what the Hell". From beginning to end, Hard to Protect, will leave you on the edge of your seat.
Will is Black Ops, used to doing what he has to do to get the job done. When he is told he needs to seduce his former psychologist that he had been mandated to see after an injury, he decides he might just enjoy giving her a little taste of revenge.
'But Angel? What of? The bloody polar ice caps?'
Angel's brother is in trouble, has disappeared and subsequently left Angel in a bad situation. After Will starts showing up and asking to take her out, she knows that she is now in a dangerous situation herself... and she vows to turn the tables and beat Will at his own game.
I loved Angel and Will, they were damaged and stubborn, but they never compromised who they were at their core through the entire story. Their back and forth banter is hilarious and fraught with sexual tension. Loved the writing, and the interesting story line kept me engrossed from page one. I will definitely be reading more from this author. I was given a complimentary copy of this book for my honest and unbiased review.
Will Berwick and the frosty Angel Treherne first meet as patient and psychotherapist, until Will, after months of medical leave, is tasked with a honey trap for the good doctor and her apparent deception where her missing brother’s concerned. But Angel is as stubbornly arctic, and extremely smart to catch on with a veneer of icy control as Will is unsuccessful in his seduction attempts. But the game of hunter and hunted becomes muddled as soon as Angel decides to turn the game on Will himself.
I’ve always like Incy Black’s writing—and that’s my not-so-secret confession here. It's flashy, confident, with just the right tinge of exaggeration, sharp insights and quotable quotes that make all my senses sing and tingle. ‘Hard to Protect’ has all these hallmarks and more, although it bears a sort of similarity to the previous books in the series: a high stakes run, a conspiracy theory, the tide turning ever which way, a temporary alliance between the protagonists because of it, and everything as always, takes a turn for the unexpected when the climax finally come into play.
Nonetheless, I loved reading both Angel’s and Will’s back stories which came together in pieces, loved their antagonistic start and the blackmail that they hold on each other. There’re elements of tragedy in Angel’s and Will’s lives, screwed up familial relations and the questioning of what loyalty really means in friendship and these little twists made the story very easy to get lost in—the weirdness and quirky bits aside—and I’m so glad to see this series finally rolling on after a long, long break in between books.
