Undeclared was a quick and easy romance novel, perfect for those in college or just about to go.
Kellan has decided that his 3rd year of college will be different than his first two. Getting over a broken heart, in his first two years of college Kellan went to party after party and hooked up with multiple girls which he doesnt even remember the names of, that is until he got gonorrhoea and almost lost his best friend. The problem is that Andi, his childhood best friend turned friend with benefits before his first year of college and the girl that broke his heart, is now attending the same college. Will Kellan finally declare his love for Andi and admit to his feelings? Or will he go back to his old ways.
Note: You do not need to read book 1 in this series to read this book, but book 2 does contain spoilers that will ruin book 1.
Undeclared was a really quick and easy novel to read if you're in the mood for a romance. Having said that, if you're looking for a book with twists and unexpected surprises or deep character development than this might not be the book for you. Throughout the story we see Kellan work on himself and his relationship with Andi & other women, this part of the story was great, I really enjoyed seeing Kellan turn into a better person. His character development was very well written. Andi however, did not have much character development. At the beginning of the book we're told her family is not wealthy and she has been working 3 jobs to save for college, she finally achieves this goal and with the help of a scholarship she is able to come to college. This is about as much character development as you'll get from Andi, throughout the whole story she is just treated as the perfect girl next door and she basically can't do any wrong. I would have liked to see more from this character. The romance was well written with ups and downs and was captivating until the end, however it was also very predictable. There are no surprises and from about half way through the book you can predict how the book will end and what the climax will be.
To summarize. The romance is good and this is a perfect summer read, however dont expect much character development from anyone other than Kellan, and dont expect any surprise twists - this is as predictable as it gets.
3.5-4 stars
Pro:
*LOVED LOVED the banter between Kellen and everyone else (especially Marcella)
*Keyes prose it on point
Con:
*Kellen is a narcissistic dick - even more than a normal 21yo boy/man.
*I sort of felt sorry for Andi. Kellen needed to grovel WAAY more to be redeemed.
Mini review:
DNF
I received an E-ARC via the publisher and Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
I was excited to read this! I have read the first book and was looking forward to continue with the series. Unfortunately I moved on.
Once I actually sat down to read this. I realized I had zero interest. Of course initially I was planning on reading. Ultimately I felt okay enough with the first book. And didn’t care for this characters story.
This was a personal thing. Still recommend.
" 'Of course,' she says him, flashing her fake smile. To anyone who doesn't know her, it will look genuine enough, but if you can't see the chipped tooth, it's not real. Crick buys it."
This novel was quite unexpected and I loved it. It was refreshing, well-thought, well-written and smartly developed. After so many NA, this one managed to grab my attention from the very start.
I haven't read the previous installment yet, but I will.
Andy was such a relatable heroine. She stood up for herself and fought for what (or who) she wanted like a grown-up woman. Loved her firm attitude and the way she carried herself.
It's a solid 4 stars.
I love the New Adult genre and also enjoy friends-to-enemies-to-lovers tropes. This book fit the bill.
Kellan was the typical alpha male jock while Andi was sweet and sensitive. I did want her to have more of a personality than she did, which is why I'm only giving this 3 stars. When the heroine lacks personality, it's hard to me to truly believe the "hot alpha male" is truly interested in her. It just doesn't seem plausible.
This is a great follow up to Undecided. This book follows Kellan, and I really loved getting a chance to know him better. I liked his character in Undecided, but the author did a perfect job creating a whole new book around him and his own set of problems. We learn about his childhood friend, Andi, whom I really loved. She wasn't a typical female lead. I like that the book is written only from Kellan's perspective, so we really can't tell what Andi is thinking most of the time. Both she and Kellan have difficulty communicating exactly how they feel at the right time, but I think that by the end of the book they've both grown and understand why talking is so important.
The group of supporting characters is awesome; most of them we already know from Undecided. I was surprised by how much I liked Marcela in this book because I didn't really understand her in the last one and I thought she was kind of annoying. We see a different perspective in this book and it helps. I love Julianna Keyes' writing style, and this book definitely didn't disappoint me like so many sequels do. If you've come across this one without reading Undecided, you should read it first. You would enjoy this one as a standalone, but the storyline in this one picks up after Undecided ends (months later), so it will be easier to understand Kellan if you've read it first. Once you've read these books, go read Julianna's other books too; you'll be glad you did!
Wow that was HOT!
I have to admit, when I first saw the cover I started to drool over Kellan. Then I read the premise, and I immediately had the WOW factor. I had to read how much Andi challenged Kellan, and made Kellan realize that he needed her in his life. I loved the relationship build, the humor, the chemistry, Andi and Kellan's characters. When I found out this was the second book after reading it, now I can understand why I was a little confused with the past characters; I'll have to read the first book to then get to know the characters better. This may have been my first book by Julianna Keyes, but this will definitely not be my last, she can write!
This title was a Did Not Finish. Unfortunately, I was unable to connect with it whether it be for characters, story-line or writing style.
Thank you for providing me with a copy.
I really enjoyed this book. I think it was written well and had great characters. The plot was thought out and I liked how the characters developed. The relationship between Andi and Kellan was a very fun rollercoaster to ride. I definitely recommend this book if you like the New Adult genre.
I was a fan of Undecided so this was an automatic read for me. I always love friends-to-lovers story. Well they were enemy for a while but that definitely adds to the story. I didn't have a great opinion on Kellan when I first read about him in Undecided, but this books definitely redeemed him.
I love love love this series and I am so excited for more from Julianna Keyes. I could not stop reading once I started! I hope this isn't the end of this series!
Thank you so much for the chance to read it early!
So, by the time I've written this review, I've actually read Undeclared twice. I thoroughly enjoyed it both times — more than maybe I even thought I would. Why, you might ask. Well, I wasn't totally sold on Kellan after the first book. He had his good qualities, but he was also a complete, total manwhore and, well, y'all know how I feel about that. The good news is that he changed his ways before this book. I guess gonorrhea will do that to you. If he'd still been acting the same way he was in the first book, I'm not sure he'd have ever won me over. But, he did. Completely.
I've probably said it a thousand times by now, but it's worth saying again here: I am a total sucker for a second chance romance story. It's one of my favorite tropes. So, while I wasn't totally sold on Kellan as a swoony guy, I had high hopes that he would prove me wrong and that I'd find his relationship with Andi satisfying. And you know what? I did. Andi was a great heroine. She was strong and sassy and she didn't take Kellan's crap. She made him work for it, and after how things ended between them when he went off to college — and how he behaved afterwards — he absolutely needed to work for it. To his credit, he did.
I did love Kellan and Andi together. Mostly because I loved how Kellan grew over the course of this book. (Again, gonorrhea apparently puts things into perspective.) There was a great guy underneath those manwhore tendencies. Regardless of what made him begin to reevaluate his choices and make changes, I'm glad he did. It took some time, but he did win me over. It's a good thing too, as we spend the entire book in Kellan's head. I think that did help me to understand him better, though.
Long story short, though Undeclared lacked a little bit of the magic that I found with Undecided, I still really enjoyed it. The character growth was top notch and, while this might be a weird thing to enjoy about a book, I was happy to see Kellan learn that actions have consequences when it comes to sex. (I mean, okay, that wasn't in the timeline of this book, but it was a large part of his inner dialogue and at least partially responsible for him making some changes.) The romance was great and I really did wind up loving the characters when it was all said and done. I think fans of the first book will be happy to see cameos from Crosbie and Nora, too. I sure hope there's more to come in the Burnham College series! It's one of my favorite NA series in the last few months.
Undeclared had me up all night, hanging into every word. This story brought me in and held me hostage. 10 stars!
I picked the first book in the Burnham College series, Undecided, as one of my favorite books in 2016, and guess what? Ms. Keyes has followed it up with another winner! Undeclared is funny, sexy, awkward, addictive, and frustrating… just like its principal character Kellan McVey. This time Ms. Keyes takes a character you sort of want to hate (he’s handsome, popular, great at sports, a ladies man), and humanizes him. The process is humbling for Kellan and hilarious for readers. I enjoyed every bit of this book and laughed out loud more than a few times. Secondary characters make memorable and multiple appearances throughout this story and I hope it signifies that Ms. Keyes has plans for more books in this delightful series. You can read this book as a standalone, but parts of Kellan’s college life really only make sense if you read Undecided first, and there are probably spoilers for it in this review. Set aside a few hours for this one. Once you start, it’s VERY difficult to put it down.
For as long as Kellan can remember, Andrea (Andi) Walsh has been a major part of his life. Neighbor, best friend, greatest rival, closest conspirator… but things changed the summer before Kellan left for college. Determined to be more experienced sexually, he asked Andi for help, and for two blissful months Andi was both best friend and lover. Kellan knew his feelings for her had evolved into something deeper, but before he could ever discuss it with her, she abruptly stopped speaking to him.
When Undeclared picks up, Kellan is at home the summer before his junior year at Burnham. Readers of the first book will remember Kellan as the ultimate ladies’ man – until a case of gonorrhea put an abrupt end to his partying ways. He spent the majority of Undecided working through a vaguely remembered list of seventy-plus women he’d had sexual relations with to try to figure out who gave it to him. Mystery solved and STD cleared up, Kellan is determined to find out why Andi abruptly ended their relationship and froze him out. He tracks her to one of her summer jobs, but the conversation doesn’t go as planned. After he awkwardly blurts out that he had gonorrhea (the STD is comic gold for Ms. Keyes), he tries to backtrack and refocus the conversation on why Andi won’t speak to him. Unfortunately, they’re interrupted by a group of girls who just want to flirt with him and before Kellan can stop her, Andi takes off.
Back at school, Kellan is determined to get back to business as usual, but he can’t figure out why all the things that made him happy before don’t seem as fun. Out with Crosbie and Nora one night shortly after school starts, he’s still trying to figure out why he feels so differently this year when the women’s volleyball team arrives with their new players – one of which is Andi, but he can’t figure out why she’s there.
Andi spots him and tries to flee, but when Kellan corners her, she admits she’s at Burnham on a volleyball scholarship. Shocked, he asks her why she didn’t tell him and Andi admits she doesn’t want to be linked to him. She knows all about his reputation and doesn’t want anyone to mistake their relationship. Hurt and angry, Kellan lets her go and pledges to stay away from her.
Readers, let me be clear: the fact that Kellan and Andi are meant to be together is never a question. Unfortunately, Kellan is emotionally immature and a relationship doofus. Andi is OBVIOUSLY his true love (duh Kellan!!!), but he’s unwilling and unable to admit it. It’s also clear (and rather heartbreakingly so) that Andi has always loved him. She’s kept her feelings from him knowing he didn’t reciprocate or deserve them. Undeclared is the story of how Kellan grows up, bumbles and fumbles his way to Andi, and then nearly loses her again.
Andi doesn’t make it easy for Kellan for most of the book, but once she allows him back into her life, every conversation is charged with the intensity of their attraction to one another. Unfortunately, every time they take a step forward, something happens to drive them apart. It’s frustrating! It’s also very funny. Though you can’t wait for them to figure things out, it gives the secondary characters a chance to shine.
I loved Kellan’s fraternity brothers (who get a lot more attention in this book), but his frenemy Marcella steals every scene she’s in. Her machiavellian scheming and surprise appearances delightfully torment Kellan. Speaking of chemistry… Marcella and Kellan read like constantly bickering siblings. I love that Marcella mostly gets the best of him and I hope she eventually gets her own story. Ms. Keyes has a great talent for dialogue and Undeclared is filled with witty and sharp conversations between Kellan and his friends, Kellan and Andi, Kellan and his advisor, Kellan and… well, everyone! It’s all very funny and deftly captures the maturity and age of this group of friends. The friendships, the experiences, the choices, the maturity level… this is obviously an idealized version of college life, but it reads and feels very authentic.
Told entirely in Kellan’s PoV, Undeclared is a refreshingly honest (well sorta!) look at a popular college student who seemingly has it all, but in reality suffers all the same doubts and insecurities as everyone else – it just takes him longer to realize it. Kellan is a candid and charming narrator who sincerely believes he’s living his best life – until he realises he isn’t and starts to doubt himself. His loyalty to his friends and family, inability to pick a major and anxiety about his future, add depth and vulnerability to his character. It’s entertaining and exasperating watching him trying to figure out how to be a better man. Ms. Keyes does an excellent job taking an already likeable character and crafting him into a truly loveable one.
Everything we know about Andi is through the lens of Kellan’s feelings and attraction to her. Beautiful, sensitive and stoic in the face of Kellan’s constant missteps, even with the absence of her PoV, the character feels very real. Ms. Keyes does a terrific job using Kellan to interpret Andi’s feelings and reactions to his behavior, and how obviously bewildered she is once he starts to focus his attention and affections on her. All of this is juxtaposed by how fierce and confident she’s become since their aborted summer affair and Kellan’s vivid memories of growing up with her. When we finally learn why she shut him out before he left for school, and she explains to Kellan why he’s not what she needs or deserves, it’s hard not to cheer for her. Andi is a tough yet vulnerable match for Kellan; it’s a delicious torment to watch them struggle to their happy ending. The final sequence is as good or better than the story that precedes it, but I would have loved a post-playground scene Ms. Keyes!
Undeclared is the often hilarious story of how Kellan McVey grows up, discovers things he thought mattered don’t matter quite so much, and realizes the love of his life was always in his life. Funny, fast paced and addictive, this is New Adult at its best. I’m not sure which of the Burnham College books is my favorite, but I recommend you read both. I’ll go ahead and declare it now – Undeclared is destined for my best of 2017 list. I loved it.
Juliana Keyes is the best New Adult author out there right now. I was really excited for this book, after loving Undecided. It helped not to read them back to back however because Kellan was not really the best guy in the first book. He was a total player and really had a steep climb to redemption. Reading Undeclared a few months after the first book was a good way to give Kellan the fresh start he deserved. This is an incredibly sweet romance-- even if Kellan is a bit of bonehead for missing what was right in front of him with Andi from the beginning. I have to say that he redeemed himself by the end of the book and the HEA was just right. I'll be looking for the next in this series and will read anything by this author.
I love a good college romance and this was hit the mark. Talk about some angst and drama. We are able to guess what Andi is feeling even though this is told in the male pov.
Andi hasn’t spoken to Kellan in years. Kellan is a smooth talker and was able to talk Andi into practicing his sex moves before he left for college. After Kellan left for college not thinking anything of it but Andi was heartbroken.
Now with them being at the same college things get interesting. Even though Kellan is an athlete at the school he is also known for all the girls he’s slept with. This is a slap in the face to Andi who has feelings for him. When she starts to date someone Kellan starts to realize he might have feelings for her.
It took Kellan a while to finally figure out he was in love with Andi, but will she give him a chance. I liked this story as much as the first one in this series. The characters are fun and easy to relate to.
This book was a little too slow for my taste. And I am not sure, but maybe if I read the first book in this series I would have been a little more invested. I pretty much just skimmed it to finish it.
Julianna Keyes is one of my top authors! Great new adult storyline and I just love her writing! I'll definitely keep reading more of her work and recommend her to others in my book community.
