I hate angst. I am not, nor will I ever be a fan of angst. This book was full of it. You know what I hate more than angst? A book full of angst that I really liked! And Juliana Keyes made me really like this book!
Kellen McVey is Big Man on Campus at Burnham College. Having grown up in a small town he’s determine to live the college experience and he has; he’s top athlete, he’s a ladies man, he’s had gonorrhea. Yeah, the gonorrhea thing might not be the experience he was looking for. What Kellan was looking for, that no one else knows, was an escape from heart break. Andi Walsh was had been at Kellan’s side for as long as he can remember; they’ve been enemies, best friends and back to enemies since they were five years old. It’s the back to enemies that Kellan doesn’t understand. Before going off to college Kellan and Andi shared the most magical summer, then suddenly Andi shut him out for pretty much no reason and breaking his heart. It’s been two years since they’ve spoken and suddenly Andi is at Burnham and she doesn’t want anyone to know that she and Kellan know each other, that they were once friends, that they have a past.
This is book two in the Burnham College Series, I didn’t read book one but something tells me I need to check it out, because I’m getting the impression that Kellan played a really big part of the angst I’m sure that book is full of. I have to say, I was not a fan of Kellan’s in the beginning, honestly I was not a fan of his throughout the book but I did learn to tolerate him. That was a chore in itself considering the story is told solely from his POV.
Kellan and Andi share the same dilemma, getting the hell out of their small town. Kellan was the first to escape with the help of an athletic scholarship; Andi’s scholarship wouldn’t come for a few years but eventually it comes and lands her at the same Ivy League school as her childhood friend. Growing up, everyone in their small town knew Andi was in love with Kellan, including Kellan, but he chose to ignore it which led to Andi’s humiliation on more than one occasion. The angst revolves around the fact that Kellan is just as head over heels for Andi as she is for him. In the midst of trying to change is reputation and try to get to the bottom of while Andi hates him so much, Kellan repeatedly hurts her feelings, embarrasses her; you name it, he does it. What helped me get through all of this angst was Kellan’s friends and the humor and witty banter between them all.
Definitely a good read and a series worth reading; I’m still on the fence about how I feel about Kellan but I will say my opinion of him changed slightly by the end of the book.
Still not a fan of angst but definitely now a fan of Ms. Keyes.
One of my favorite reads of 2016 was Undecided, the first book in Julianna Keye's Burnham College series. When I found out there's going to be a companion novel, I happy danced because I loved the Burnham College gang so much and I wasn't ready to say good bye. When the release date for Undeclared was finally announced my excitement heightened. Then, I got a little nervous because I started hearing that Undeclared was not as good as Undecided.
I avoided all reviews though, because I wanted to form my own opinions about the book and I'm so glad I did because after reading Undeclared, I found I loved it as much as I did Undecided. However, even though I loved it, I do recognize that Undeclared not as solid as Undecided.
I'm going to start by saying that if you into this expecting Kellan to be as swoon-worthy as Crosbie, you're going to be sorely disappointed. Actually, I think how much you'll enjoy this book will depend on how much you'll end up liking Kellan's character. Because ultimately he's not an easy character to like. I, for one, found him endearing despite his dense, idiotic ways. Despite all the mistakes he made (and he made plenty), and there were times I wanted to reach into the pages and shake him, I couldn't help but love him anyway. He's one of those lovable idiots.
Kellan lived a charmed life. He has loving parents who supported him, he's athletic and handsome, he's popular and everyone likes him. Everything comes easy for him, he doesn't have to put much effort and things just kind of fall on his lap--it's just his sort of luck. But, at the same time, he doesn't let all his good luck go over his head, and he's a good guy at heart. However, he is a HUGE manwhore, having the longest list of hookups out of all the guys at the fictional ivy league Burnham College. Then, the gonorrhea incident happened, and it made him take stock of his choices and his manwhore ways. We saw him trying to step away from the college party scene and random hookups in Undecided.
Undeclared starts with Kellan back home for the summer and he's about to go back to college (for his junior year) in a couple of days. He runs into Andrea (aka Andi), his next door neighbor, childhood best friend/enemy, and in the summer before his freshman year of college, they became something more. But, Andi ended up freezing Kellan out (for reasons unknown to him) a few days before he left for his freshman year of college. This was the first time he's spoken to Andi since that summer two years ago, and it's very awkward between them.
Kellan leaves for college, but what Andi didn't tell him was that she's actually going to be attending Burnham too. In Undeclared we see Kellan fumbling his way into a sort of friendship with Andi, and working out his feelings for her. He makes a lot of mistakes, and there were times I felt so bad for Andi because she clearly has feelings for him (although she denies it too and tries to keep herself away from him). Although the story was told entirely in Kellan's POV, I very much felt connected to Andi's character because I saw a lot of myself in her. Kellan was constantly letting her down without even realizing it. But, I rooted for Kellan, despite his idiotic guy ways, to finally get it right and be that guy Andi deserves.
Like I mentioned earlier, I didn't think Undeclared is as solid as Undecided. The main plot of Kellan and Andi's road to happy ever after was great, but two of the secondary plot lines--the mystery campus vandals who trashed Kellan's apartment and the competition to win a sports segment with the local TV studio--felt contrived at times, were somewhat awkwardly concluded, and didn't really add anything to the main story line and felt more like fillers. However, they didn't really take away my enjoyment of Kellan and Andi's story. I also really like Ms. Keyes's writing style and humor. I laughed out loud several times--I love the running jokes throughout and the banter between Kellan and his friends. And speaking of Kellan's friends, if you read Undecided, you get to see the whole gang again: Crosbie and Nora, Marcela (who is hilarious!), Nate, and with the addition of Choo and Dane (Kellan and Crosbie's jock friends who seriously need their own book).
I know not everyone is going to enjoy Undeclared, but I personally LOVED it (as much as I did Undecided) despite its flaws. After I've finished reading the book, I did peek at a few reviews and there were some readers who absolutely loved Undecided like myself, but Undeclared did not work out for them. Undeclared happen to work out for me. If you do decide to pick it up, go into it without expectations and go into it knowing Kellan is not going to be like Crosbie. But, yeah, Undeclared is another FANTASTIC read by Ms. Keyes. I loved it and I can't wait to read more by her.
Reading this book was so fantastic! It was a nice NA, and a great love story! We were introduced to Kellan in the first book, but Andi was a new character, and I enjoyed getting to know the both of them in this book!
Kellan isn't a bad guy, he's just made a lot of bad choices. Like, pretending that he didn't know about Andi's feelings for him, because that was just easier for him. Like, having a friends with benefits relationship with Andi before going to college. Like, sleeping around with pretty much any willing girl for a year and a half-until he gets gonorrhea because he was hurt she stayed away from him after their sexual relationship. But he's going to change, in this book!
I loved watching Andi and Kellan together! They've both loved each other for basically forever, only he didn't actually know it, or was able to express it to her. Which lead to a lot of poor choices, and a heck of a ride for their emotions!
I think one scene that I really loved, was when Kellan tried to get rid of his list like Crosbie did in the first book. That was pretty hilarious! That fit in well with the robber, Andi and Kellan's relationship, and Kellan growing as a person!
This book was really fantastic and enjoyable, and I really hope we'll get more of this wonderful series!
One of my favorite New Adult books! I adored the first book, but I have to say this one is now my favorite. I ADORED Kellen and I can't wait to see what this author comes up with next.
I'm afraid that I couldn't get into this book, after 5 chapters I closed it out. Just wasn't for me.
One of my favorite New Adult reads last year was Undecided! I promoted that book everywhere and to everyone. It was so amazing! I couldn’t wait to get Undeclared on my Kindle and let me tell you, the wait was painful. Finally, the day came that it arrived and I started to read it…
I don’t know what happened. The author wrote a fantastic NA story in Undecided, but it’s like all that went away for Undeclared. I actually liked Kellan in the first book so I was excited about his story, but I was left a little bit disappointed. Kellan didn’t completely win me over. It got to a point where I didn’t really care if he ended up happy or not, which says a lot since I wanted him to get his HEA. I think one of my reasons for not really liking much of Kellan was his personality. In the first book, he’s portrayed as someone who’s easy-going and the fun of the party. I get he’s trying to change his ways after an STD scare, but that doesn’t mean he has to stop being a fun guy and I missed that of him.
I’m a major fan of second-chance romance but even then, I was mostly eh on the romance. At times, it was believable and at others, it wasn’t. I really liked their flashbacks, but there weren’t enough of them in the story. Not only that, but the flashbacks showed a different side of Andi and Kellan. Their chemistry back then was intense, but now it was… Non-existant? That really took away from their second-chance at love for me.
I wish Crosbie and Nora had made more appearances in the story. I really liked the friendship that Nora and Kellan developed in the first book so I was expecting to see more of it in this second installment, but that wasn’t the case 🙁
Overall, I was obviously expecting a whole lot more of Undeclared. I highly recommend you check out Undecided since that’s a New Adult gem!
Unfortunately I'm a bit disappointed with this one. Definitely not as good as the first in the series. I wasn't overly convinced with the chemistry between the characters and I thought there was a few time gaps that didn't make much sense.
I had loved "Undecided" by the same author and was glad to see Kellan getting his own story. Thoug at first he is quite the jackass, in the plot he matures and tries to change his behavior. I also liked Andi! Even though she tries to change in order to fit in her new college life, she is such a strong young woman! Their banter and relationship is very good!
And we also had cameos! I love Crosbie and Nora!
This story was exactly what I imagined it would be and more.
I have to admit I haven’t read the first book in the series, so I was a little bit afraid that I might be missing some vital background aspects to the story of Kellan and Andi. Thankfully, that wasn’t the case! The author skilfully hints at the past events, that took place in the first ‘Burnham College’ book, in conversations between the main characters. And speaking of conversations, hilarious banters between Kellan and his friends, or Kellan and Andi made me laugh out loud.
The book is written solely in Kellan’s POV, which makes sense, since he is the character who’s transformation is at the centre of everything that’s happening. Apparently, when he appears in the first book in the series, he is the campus superstar/god/celebrity/every-willing-girl’s-f**k-toy. However, some unfortunate events force him to take a hard look into his life and the person he wants others to see in him. This is how Kellan 2.0 is born, a new improved version of Kellan, who needs to decide what he wants to do, and who he wants to be.
The only thing he doesn’t take into account is his childhood best friend, Andi. Unresolved issues and confusing feelings from the past are making Kellan question his priorities, when Andi arrives to start her first year at Burnham College. And this is just the beginning. Things get confusing, then hot, then dramatic, then sweet. So if you enjoy sexy college new adult romances, ‘Undeclared’ is a perfect choice.
Genres have a natural upswing and downswing of their popularity but I don’t always read according to what’s popular. I read according to what I’m in the mood for. New Adult was pretty popular a few years ago and I really enjoyed the well written ones and one of the best I read was Undecided by Julianna Keyes. It was funny, smart, and had heart – which when you combine the three are pretty much the essentials. So now New Adult isn’t super popular so I’m not seeing as much of it out there, even though I’m still interested in it…enter Undeclared, the follow up to Undecided!
Undecided was really popular with my friends and I. I don’t know if it has a big following or not. But it SHOULD! Undeclared follows Kellan – the roommate from the first book. He’s had to take a serious look at his life after everything that happened last year. He realizes that he’s made some major mistakes in the past and tries to take steps to fix those mistakes. When Andi, a hometown girl from his past, pretty much wants nothing to do with him, Kellan goes to great lengths to try to make things better with her.
On her part Andi just wants to try to avoid Kellan. But for all she tries she cannot get around seeing him when he’s everywhere she turns! Andi makes him work for his redemption, which really worked for me in turn. I can’t stand when them women in the books I read give in too easily and make it an easy thing for the guys to get away with.
This was such a good second chance romance for me. Supporting characters are key and while Kellan and Andi are extremely strong, the supporting cast in this series are those characters that you spend a book saying omg I want their book next!! When that happens you know an author did their job beyond well. Marcella is great but Choo is amazing. I want more Choo! The friendship amongst all the guys in these books felt so real to me without being forced.

Title: Undeclared
Author: Julianna Keyes
Release Date: February 28, 2017
Undecided was one of the best New Adult book I read last year and I was just itching for another book. I remember wishing really hard for more and I couldn't be happier when Kellan's story was announced! Thank you Ms. Keyes for making our (I know I'm not alone in this!) dream come true!
This second story features Kellan the ultimate manwhore at Burnham. He well deserves the reputation as he slept around A LOT. It's not a great secret, he was easy. Now if you had asked me what I thought of Kellan McVey while I was reading Undecided last year, complex would not have been a word I'd use in a million years (Sorry Kellan). Then I read Undeclared. I'm surprised to see how much depth there actually is to Kellan. He's really not a playboy. Kellan McVey is actually a sensitive and thoughtful guy. There are reasons, valid reasons, behind his wild and promiscuous ways. When Andi reappears in his life he's forced to reevaluate what he really wants.
Andi and Kellan had major history and chemistry and you could tell. Although I wasn't a fan of the middle ground they were at for most of the book, I do understand why they were stuck there. Otherwise the story would not have been the same. The indecisions and hesitations were all integral to the two of them finding their way (back to each other). They were sweet, hot and just the perfect fit. At times I did feel indignation for Andi having to always wait but in the end, time said it all.
Undeclared is so much fun. I can never get enough of the witty dialogues and hilarious situations. There are some well-meaning stalking by a course advisor, some good-natured teasing from friends and some blunt nagging from not-friends. They really put Kellan's life in perspective and it's just great fun to have them around. I'd really like some more Puntastic excellence please. And it's a no-brainer I'd love for some more Burnham College stories please.
By this point I'm sure you can all tell I very highly recommend the Burnham College books. Both Undecided and Undeclared feature complex characters dealing with realistic problems. It's motivating and entertaining watching them navigate the tough moments while not forgetting to have some sexy fun. There is so much to enjoy about this series. Trust me.
You know that feeling when you're highly anticipated something and then it's not what you were expecting? That's what happened with me and this book. Last year I read Undecided, the first book in this series and I loved it. I also loved Kellan a lot so I was really excited for his book... well, his book ended up being a disappointment. It's not that the book was bad I just didn't connect with the characters and the story. It didn't help that I was reading it during a reading slump.
My main problem with this book were the characters. As much as I loved Kellan in the first book I just didn't like him that much in this one. The carefree Kellan I grew to love was not this Kellan who wasn't even able to talk to the important people in his life when he should talk. I have a huge problem with miscommunication in book and that's what basically happened in this one because Kellan was unable to talk when he should and then when he wanted to talk something would happen, which would throw everything away. It was just so damn frustrating. I also didn't like Andi that much. Because this book is told only from Kellan's POV we never know what's really going on with Andi but I didn't like how she acted sometimes and I just couldn't connect with her. I just think that if I liked the characters I might have liked this book a little bit more.
While I had a few problems with the main characters I still liked the story. It was nothing special but it was enjoyable. I also, loved that Kellan's friends played such a huge part in this book because I loved them a lot and I missed Nora and Crosbie. It was great to see how friendship was so important to all these characters. However, there were some other things I didn't like. There were some things happening in the story at some points and I thought some of those things would be important for the plot but in the end those things were irrelevant and were just there to fill in some pages.
Overall, while this book was a little bit of a disappointment it was still an enjoyable read. I still think that if this something that you might like you should give it a try... and don't forget to read Undecided too because it's such a good book.
I really enjoyed this book. I liked reading from the point of view of the male main character. I will read more books in this series.
I was a massive fan of Keyes book Undecided, the relationship between Crosbie and Nora was one of my favourites, I loved how it came about with neither of them expecting it. And whilst I was a fan of Kellan too I was eager for him to finally get his own story. If you know me by now you know I’m a massive fan of second chance romances and I was eager for more of Kellan and Andi when I’d learnt about their earlier relationship. It was clear to me that Kellan and Andi were meant to be, bits of their backstory that we were given over time, and the way they were around each other, I just wanted them to drop everything and just be together already. Also with everything that Kellan had dealt with last year, I liked the more responsible, considerate Kellan we got to see this time, even though a lot of the times he just wanted to jump right in with Andi. Keyes once again wrote a smoking hot romance; the scenes between Kellan and Andi were totally swoonworthy, that I wish we had a lot more of these scenes, rather than the obstacles and miscommunications that we got along the way. But this minor detail aside, I loved seeing the development of the beautiful relationship between Kellan and Andi and getting to know some great secondary characters, Dane, Choo and Bertrand were a delight! I just wish I was able to enjoy this book as much as I did Undecided, nevertheless, I will be looking forward with eager anticipation to more from Keyes in the future.
I loved Undecided last year, LOVED. Despite that however, I was a little bit wary about Undeclared. I mean I was excited about it, but part of me was very nervous because I just wasn't that big of a fan of Kellan. He was a manwhore and a really gross one at that - I know I shouldn't judge but he slept with 63 women and most of whose names he couldn't even bother to remember. That's not swoony book boyfriend material. Still, I wanted to read this one at least for the Nora and Crosbie cameos.
For the most part, I thought this book was okay, but I wasn't as impressed as I hoped I would be. I think my dislike for Kellan really played a role in that. We (thankfully) don't see him acting as a complete dickhead here, but even though his STD scare forces him to re-evaluate his life, I didn't find him to be particularly likeable. I did warm up to him by the end, but again, I wasn't blown away by his character by any means. I really really think this book could have benefited from Andi's POV to balance out Kellan's. She was the better character for me, and I enjoyed getting to know her.
As far as the romance goes, I felt conflicted. I thought Andi and Kellan had great chemistry together, and I loved all their scenes together as well. However, I would have liked to see more flashbacks of them as friends. This is a second-chance romance, after all, and for those to be successful for me, I need to see the connection between the two. I also felt like there was a serious lack of communication between Kellan and Andi. So many times, I just wanted them to talk it out and figure their shit out together, which led to major frustration on my part.
I did really like the secondary characters. It was nice to see Nora and Crosbie again, and some of the newer characters as well were very charming. There's no doubt that Keyes has a very addicting writing style, but Undeclared just wasn't entirely the book for me because of personal preferences. I still recommending picking up Undecided 100% however and I will always look back on it fondly.
I didn't know if I would enjoy this one as much as Undecided, but I did! I loved Kellan and Andrea's story so hard! Ugh! So so good!! :)

Thank you!!
I just want to put it out there that while I’m not a fan of shirtless people on book covers, this one looks really beautiful. I like what the cover artist did here—it’s tasteful, romantic and sexy at the same time. *insert heart eyes emoji*
You know what else deserves a heart eyes emoji? This story. Damn, I really enjoyed this.
This is my second Julianna Keyes’ book and it definitely won’t be my last. I guess I can’t really say it was as stellar as her first book (which I absolutely LOVED), but Undeclared still kept me hooked from beginning to end.
I met Kellan last year when I read Undecided, and dude won me over then. Kellan was exactly who he needed to be for the friendship triangle to work in Undecided, but it’s in Undeclared that he has his chance to shine.
I’ll warn you from the start that Kellan isn’t the easiest character to fall for. He’s flawed, like really, really flawed, and sometimes he says things that make you go: “Dude, no. Just no.” But the thing with Kellan is that he still manages to be likable no matter what. At least that’s how I felt about him.
Flawed characters like Kellan can either work or go down in flames. Thankfully, it worked for me here. I enjoyed the emotional ride as I went from wanting to strangle him at times to wanting to hug him. Why all that? Because Kellan makes falling in love harder than it already is.
Here we have the former Romeo who couldn’t keep it in his pants trying to build a new life. Kellan 2.0, a guy who’s trying to be a better person, and by that he means trying not to fall in bed with any willing girl in the perimeter. A task that turns near impossible when the girl who broke his heart in the first place comes back into the picture.
See, Kellan had a “friends with benefits” relationship with this closest girl friend/nemesis, Andi. The night before he had to leave for college, Andi stopped talking to him. So he left without asking for an explanation as to why she was mad. Typical Kellan as you’ll soon learn. Dude avoids dealing with his and other people’s feelings for as long as possible. Anyway, Andi’s dismissal breaks his heart, so when he gets to Burnham, he starts sleeping around to forget the pain. That’s how he turns into the Kellan we met in Undecided. But something happens during the first book and Kellan decides to start his third year as a new man, and leave his past where it belongs. Except his past is coming to his present, because Andi is attending Burnham this year.
We have Kellan and Andi thrown together as they try to figure out a way to deal with each other and the feelings (good and bad) that are still very much alive.
Since this is told only from Kellan’s POV (more about that soon), his was the biggest arc. Which means I got one theme from this: Kellan learning how to be a grown up. It almost felt like a coming of age story with Kellan going from the “boy who slept around” to the “man who figured out he could deal with his feelings in a more productive/adult way”. Some people might have a problem with this because it means you get to watch Kellan make some pretty silly choices for a while, but, like I said before, I liked watching this flawed character grow. This is probably the result of my affection for him since the previous books—people who didn’t like Kellan then might have a harder time warming up to him. I didn’t. I was rooting for him. I wanted him to learn how to approach Andi and talk about the things that happened in the past. I wanted him to realize Andi was the woman for him. I wanted him to be less afraid of taking a chance and falling in love again. It isn’t a spoiler when I say I got what I wanted in the end, and I enjoyed watching him get there.
Despite liking how the story progressed, I missed having a more powerful presence on Andi’s part. I wish we had had a few chapters in her POV so we could get to know her better, because Andi was a likable and interesting on her own. I liked how she wasn’t the typical girly-girl and how she was unafraid to put Kellan in his place. I wish we’d seen more of her.
But getting chapters only from Kellan means we got to see more of the people in his life. We got a few scenes with Crosby and Nora (YAY!!!) and the other guys. I can’t say I got enough of Crosby, Nora and Kellan, though. There was something different about their dynamic as a trio, and I preferred the way they interacted in the first book. Having said that, I loved when all the boys were together. I thought they were fun and brought a much lighter tone to the book. And then we have Marcela. She’s just hilarious and all her desperate attempts to get Kellan to help her make her crush jealous made me laugh. I loved every scene between Marcela and Kellan, and how he came to see her as a friend in the end.
So, for me, Undeclared was a great sequel to an amazing debut, and I’m definitely interested in reading more stories from this author.
I loved Undecided! Crosbie and Nora’s romance just ticked all the boxes for me. I read and enjoyed Undeclared, Kellan’s story, in 24 hours, but I didn’t love it, and that basically came down to Kellan. Still, like I said I read the book in a short amount of time, hooked by the story.
I adored Andi, and felt bad for her, because it was inferred that Kellan somehow broke her heart before he left for college. She wasn’t mean to Kellan, when she really could’ve been. Andi’s priority was college, having had to wait two years while saving money to go, you could tell it was important to her.
I didn’t like Kellan in Undecided. Yeah, I get that I’m not supposed to be judgmental if a guy sleeps with a bunch of girls, without promising them anything other than a good time, but hooking up with sixty-three girls without even bothering to find out a good majority of their names doesn’t stir up feelings of swoon for me. I was soooo ready to change my opinion of him, especially if his actions were motivated by heartbreak, but Kellan was just so self-absorbed and clueless for much of this book! He had no clue what upset Andi at that baseball game?!! Really?!! Omg, I wanted to smack upside the head, he was so stupid!
I keep reminding myself that Kellan is only twenty-one/twenty-two, so I should give this guy a break. There are not many twenty-one year old guys out there like Crosbie, with his big heart, most fall into the Kellan range of emotional maturity, but Crosbie set the bar high for me in the first book. Still, I rooting for Kellan to get it right, because even when he kept screwing things up you could tell he loved Andi. I wanted him to get it right especially for Andi, because she really deserved it! Boy-oh-boy, when they were on the right track they burned up the pages! Julianna Keyes writes some hot stuff!
I do love this world Ms. Keyes has created, and I’d love more stories at Burnham. I was thrilled to “see” Crosbie and Nora together and happy; leaving no doubt they’re in it for good. Marcela was delightfully wicked and hilarious, and I enjoyed her “adversarial” relationship with Kellan. The book had some fun, clever humor. I cracked up over the Halloween pun costumes! But most of all, I loved how everything turned out with Kellan and Andi. I got some insight into why he kept screwing things up, and I finally fell for him.
