I wanted this to be a "perfect summer book" & it just wasn't for me. Darcy whines, repeats & some of the situations were just so unbelievable, as well as disjointed. Darcy complains about the summer people, yet jumps right in & befriends them. Her neighbors are jerks (including her ex-husband) & creepy. Her boyfriend needed to be dumped, not led around, a convenient lay when she felt like it. Sorry, hopefully the next book will be better~
Nancy Thayer has written a captivating and lovely book which is a perfect beach read. Set on Nantucket, it is the story of Darcy finding the ability to be happy on her magical island. After a lonely childhood and a disastrous first marriage, Darcy moves to the home she inherited from her beloved grandmother.
She becomes entangled with the summer residents, including her ex-husband's stepdaughter. Darcy also realizes how much she loves her casual boyfriend, Nash.
A simply lovely book, with a very satisfying ending. I highly recommend it for an enjoyable experience in reading.
I love reading books about Nantucket; it's my desire to live there one day. Nancy Thayer's new book, Secrets in Summer, is highly engaging. The main character, Darcy, a librarian, who lives year round in Nantucket, is romantically involved with Nash, a carpenter. Now add summer people, her ex-husband and his family, and an older woman and her handsome grandson and suddenly Darcy is entangled in several different relationships. A great new summer read!

Thank you for NetGalley.com and the publisher for an ARC copy of this novel in exchange for my fair and honest review.
For someone who talks again and again about not becoming involved with “summer people” on Nantucket, Darcy seems to let them in with extreme pleasure and ease. From the sickly neighbor to the downtrodden, possibly abused wife, to the ex-hubby and his new family, Darcy sure seems to make a mess of her life in just 2 months. And then magically, once all the summer people are gone, life goes back to normal and everything seems to happen in months in the last 20% of the book.
What I Liked: I like summer stories about Nantucket, but this one was boring. Could Darcy have whined any more about her life? Think about it sweetheart. You are a single woman living on an island with 15,999 other people year-round who are mostly families. Of course its going to be difficult to find someone but are you really going to whine about it to your cat all of the time? Nothing really went on in Darcy’s life – it was everyone who had entered it. The secrets were only about one of the summer families and not really any business of Darcy’s to begin with.
What I Didn’t Like: Quite a few things, unfortunately. From “Perfect Darcy” which was setting an unrealistic expectation for a woman, to the entire creepy situation with Clive for starters. But I think what bothered me most about this novel was how all of her true friends, the year-round friends, seemed to be abandoned by Darcy for her summer neighbors. The entire last quarter of the book is Darcy complaining that she didn’t see this person or that person. What was the point of bringing up all these local characters at the end of the story? They had no purpose being there.
What I learned: Nantucket is becoming so 2015 (or earlier). Time to find a new summer destination.
Overall Grade: C
I'm a huge Nancy Thayer fan so maybe it isn't fair for me to review the book lol. I liked the characters with the exception of Darcy's ex husband, who was so full of himself it was hard to even read his part. I loved that this book centered around Darcy being a librarian and the descriptions of her library. I have worked in our local library so I know the draw the character felt. This book was really enjoyable. You won't be disappointed in this book.
This is my first experience with Nancy Thayer and I noticed that she has a talent for developing several characters and is extraordinary at describing the beautiful scenery of Nantucket. I felt that she transported me straight to summer on the island. There are quite a few relationships/friendships to keep track of in this novel, but I was very drawn to the lead character, Darcy, as she is close to my age and also has a deep love for books. The book takes you through a summer on Nantucket with Darcy, a resident of the island, and many of her neighbors who are just renting houses for the summer. You meet many charming and some not-so-charming characters along the way. I kept flipping pages to see how the summer would end for Darcy and her new friends. That being said, I did like this one quite a bit for what it is - a beach or summer read. It was an engaging and charming book and is perfect if you're looking for a light read.
Thanks to Ballantine Books and NetGalley for an advanced copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.
I received this novel from Netgalley in return of an honest review. This was the second Nantucket themed novel in a row I received from Netgalley and I personally enjoyed this one better because of the charm it brought to the town. True to the title, the novel included many "secrets" that involved many generations of people. I really liked the dynamics of the book and think it would make a great beach read!
Lovely Children's Librarian Darcy is having hot sex with a local handyman who hasn't defined their relationship, when she learns her ex, the smarmy Boyz, is renting the Nantucket mansion behind hers. Plus, another handsome neighbor and his charming grandmother are renting the mansion next door. Poor beautiful Darcy gets sucked into various melodramas of the summer set included love squares, heroin use, and affairs, among others, and ends up with a HEA you can see coming from miles away. Not my cup of tea, as the storytelling style left me feeling cold, especially regarding the various relationships, and as a main character Darcy is annoyingly perfect. So perfect she even calls it out herself in the text.
A fun and entertaining "beach read" set in Nantucket. She adeptly shows the differences between the year round visitors and the summer tourists. There are some poignant moments and a happy ending.
Nancy Thayer never disappoints, but this is my favorite book she's written. Excellent characters, a great plot on many levels, and to top it off the main character is a librarian, which I love.
Fans of Nancy Thayer ( or any fiction that takes place in Nantucket) will not be disappointed by Secrets in Summer. This book tells the story of Darcy, a year-long resident of the island, and her summer-only neighbors. Unfortunately, one of her summer neighbors turns out to be her ex-husband, his new wife, and his step daughter. Despite this awkward situation, this book still has a peaceful, tranquil quality. You almost feel as if you are sitting on the beach in Nantucket while you are turning the pages. My only complaint (and its a small one) is that Darcy came off as being much older than her 30 years. I know that Darcy was mature for her age due to her life circumstances, but I wish she was portrayed as being a little bit younger and more carefree. I was constantly surprised every time her age was mentioned.
I received this book free from NetGalley in exchange for my honest and unbiased opinion.
Darcy is living in Nantucket in a home she inherited from her grandmother. She is shocked when her ex and his family moves next door. As the summer people come to Nantucket, she makes some good friends as she dates the islander, Nash. She learns secrets about her new neighbors and becomes involved in their troubled lives. It all makes for an interesting tale as Darcy finds her own happiness. As always, a very readable tale from Nancy Thayer.
Beach book alert!
Through the words of Thayer, we find ourselves on the streets of Nantucket. The people and places and the relationships and bonds among the women we meet are familiar to us. Darcy is a flirtatious character that piques our interest as we follow her antics to see what will happen next. She is back on her feet after a recent divorce and romance is in the air. This is the kind of somewhat predictable, yet desirable beach read, that keeps Thayer fans coming back time after time.
Thank you to Random House Publishing Group and Netgalley for this Advanced Reading Copy in exchange for an unbiased review.
As with all Nacy Thayer's books there is great romance, wonderful twists, and a very satisfying ending. I would have given it 4 stars,if she hadn't repeated quite so often how cracked the sidewalks were - didn't know if she was giving a hint to the city council. Also she repeated - I stopped counting at 3 - how the population of the island swelled from 16000 to 60000 during the summer. I thought the redundancy a bit unnecessary. Otherwise,,I thoroughly enjoy the book. as will ;all of her fans of which there are legion.
Another winner from Nancy Thayer. I think Secrets in Summer in one of her best books. It's the story of Darcy Cotterill, a year-round resident of beautiful Nantucket Island who lives in the house her grandmother left to her. An unsettled childhood led Darcy to the island, and she loves it there. She's in a relationship with a local man named Nash, who doesn't talk much about his past. As summer starts, Darcy finds herself next to a rental with her ex-husband Boyz and his wife and teen aged daughter. On the other side, another rental contains an attractive man and his aging grandmother.
The story was interesting and engaging. Nancy Thayer's characters are always people I'd like to live next door to for the summer, and these characters were no exception. They were all well drawn and true to life. The story wove together a friendship between generations and showed how much we can have in common regardless of age. I thought the relationships between Darcy and Nash and Darcy and Boyz were well written.
I enjoyed this book very much and highly recommend it. A great beach read and more.
Nancy Thayer's Nantucket stories are consistently a refreshing mental getaway for me and I can easily transport myself to the quaint streets, neighborhoods, and circle of friends that are in the story. Darcy is a resident and children's librarian in Nantucket and has successfully landed on her feet after a divorce and the death of her grandmother. This story follows her flirtations with Nash who also lives on the island, and Clive, a summer visitor. It also explore friendships and bonds between women of multiple generations as the summer crowd appears.
I appreciated that the story was a typical beach love story and focused on the women and friendships as well. This is a nice, light read that will be a perfect beach or summer read.
Thanks to NetGalley for the free preview!
I love Nancy Thayer and I loved this book. Dorthy Cotterill is a year round Nantucket resident. Summer comes and brings with it summer people, including an ex-husband and more. Fun to be had as Dorthy gets involved with the new people and a new love.
I was provided an ARC of Secrets in Summer by Nancy Thayer. I have never been to Nantucket, but I do feel I have visited there in this story.
Darcy is a librarian that lives in the home her grandmother left her in Nantucket. She had a turbulent childhood with a beautiful , flighty mother and an emotionally unavailable father. They divorced when Darcy was two and she was shuttled around her Mother's relatives, never sure where she would spend the night. Books were her solace, comfort, and certainly joy. At the age of ten, she was shuttled off to her fathers mother in Nantucket. That was her stability and she loved her grandmother Penny dearly . The book finds her living in the house on Nantucket, having been married ( not happily) and divorced from a charismatic, handsome, real estate mogul. Ironically he has rented the home behind Darcy with his family. On the other side of her is a summer rental with an elderly woman and her handsome divorced grandson. The next summer rental person she meets is a pretty, harried mother of 3 very active boys.
The story revolves around the events and circumstances happening in the lives of the summer rental neighbors and Darcy's relationships with them. A veritable crosshatch of generations. In addition we find Darcy with a romance that she is finding her way with. This is a light read, fun,and chatty. As a beach read it would be justvthecticket!
I loved this story. Nancy Thayer never disappoints, but just keeps getting better. I put this book down wishing I could live in a grand old house on Nantucket and be friends with Darcy. I hope to meet up with her again
Memorial Day marks the beginning of the tourist season on Nantucket, and for some locals, it’s the worst time of the year. But Darcy Cotterill doesn’t mind, she lives on the island year round in the house she inherited from her grandmother, and the summers provide her a chance to enjoy the beach, some stargazing, and to make some new friends. This year, however, gets off to a rough start. Her ex-husband, his new wife and stepdaughter have appeared on island. And while Darcy is enjoying her romance with a local carpenter, summer visitor Clive Rush. Pulled into the lives of her ex and his new family, an elderly neighbor and torn between two men, Darcy’s summer promises to be anything but ordinary. Thayer writes the ultimate beach novels and readers will be eager to devour her latest
