I have read and enjoyed some of the Temperance Brennan series by this author so I was pleased to receive this arc from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
It was an easy read about a PI called Sunnie Night who is hired to find the kidnapped granddaughter of a wealthy elderly woman, Opaline Drucker. Sunnie lives a reclusive life having left the police force after a shooting and she suffers mental health issues due to her own difficult background which is gradually revealed as the novel progresses.
To help her find out if Opaline's granddaughter, Stella, is alive she recruits her own brother, Gus and then spends her time racing across America with him in pursuit of the bombers who murdered Stella's mother and brother and possibly kidnapped her.
Sunnie's first person narrative is interspersed with flashbacks of a young girl escaping from somewhere and the reader assumes this might be Stella. These parts are written in italics to differentiate them from the main story. I found these sections of the book overly detailed and I did skim read these a bit without detracting too much from the plot
There were quite a lot of characters in the book and I had to keep stopping to work out who they were. The story generally moved at a fast pace with short sentences so it was quite quick to read.
Sunnie was quite a difficult and prickly person who had obviously been deeply affected by her past whereas her brother seemed a lot more laid back, Both had suffered in the same way but the outcome for each of them was quite different.
This was an enjoyable read and although it is described as a stand alone novel I could see it as part of a series in the future as it had that feel to it.

I loved this book from the very first chapter. Sunnie (Sunday) Night lives on Goose Island alone apart from a squirrel who pops in for food. Sunnie and her twin brother Gus (August) have a past. She is damaged and scared, after time spent in the services and the police force she is working as a PI. Her friend Beau recommends her to help a very rich lady find out more about the attack that killed her daughter and grandson, and what happened to her missing granddaughter . The story is fast paced, the characters interesting. I had to read this book in two days as I needed to know what happened to Sunnie and Gus. Great read.

Kathy Reichs has a way of getting under your skin with her stories, they can scare you so badly you don't want to turn the page but you ALWAYS want to read what's coming next and this book was no different. It pulled me in, you get really invested in the characters as they're so likeable.

Enjoyed this book very much and finished it quite quickly. Not sure I would read this as a series the way I have the Tempe books would give a few more a try. Would always recommend Kathy Reichs though everything is so well written

I'm a big fan of Kathy Reichs' writing and loved the Temperance Brennan series so I was eager to read her new series following the life of new character, Sunday Night.
I wasn't disappointed, the writing flowed along at an interesting pace and the story kept me on the edge of my seat, rooting for Sunday and her easygoing brother Gus., I couldn't put the book down and read it in two days.
The characters were great, the storyline tense and involved, I have nothing bad to say about this novel and I await excitedly for more in the Sunday Night series.

I was really excited to see a new book by Kathy reichs however I was left feeling a bit disappointed with this book. Maybe I have an expectation when I read a book by Kathy. This book was ok but I don't think it had the depth and interest. I am pleased it's finished

As a long time fan of Kathy's books having read and reread her books i was pleased to see her book on netgalley. I'm sorry to say i was quite disappointed in this one. I just couldn't warm to sunnie at all and at one point I couldn't care wether she caught the terrorists or found the missing girl. Sorry Kathy I'm still a huge fan of yours but this one just didn't do it for me.

I received a free ecopy of this book in return for an honest review. Many thanks to Netgalley and and the publisher for the opportunity.

While I enjoyed the Temperance Brennan books from Kathy Reichs I found them increasingly formulaic (how many times can one person go investigating alone and get knocked on the head?) so I was interested to see how a new set of characters would shape up. 'Sunday Night' is a former police detective with enough emotional baggage to sink the the Titanic! At the behest of Her foster father Beau Beaumonde and with assistance from her twin, August, Sunday goes terrorist hunting. As ever Kathy Reichs' style is deft though I sometimes find her prose so curt the story becomes hard to follow. There were also a number of culture references that I had to look up (I assume if I was American some of them would have made more sense) so that at times struggled. As always with Kathy Reichs though, the book was well researched with plenty of authentic detail that didn't get in the way of a good thriller. I was glad I pressed on and look forward to more cases for Sunnie in the future.

I am so glad Kathy Reichs is back with a new novel. No one does female leads like Kathy Reichs, and no one does a thriller better. I know this was intended to be a stand alone novel but lets hope we get to read more of Sunnie she is a fantastic character.

Reichs steps outside her comfort zone with Two Nights, a new standalone thriller that switches the crime lab for the cold, hard streets of former cop Sunnie Night.
As she explains in a forward to readers, the decision to swap a “mircoscope for a gun” is new territory for the author of the Temperance Brennan books but one that pays off with an intriguing new character with a dark past.
When the reclusive Night is hired by a wealthy woman to find those responsible for bombing deaths of her family, it draws her into a world of ideology and danger that mirrors the trauma of her own past.
Structurally similar to the Temperance books, the tightly plotted story - while entertaining -often feels formulaic in its delivery.
But its offset by Reichs' ability to craft interesting characters that you'll want to return to again and again.
Two Nights is far from a perfect book. But it shows enough to suggest it might have legs if Reichs does decide to develop it into a series.

This is a standalone novel from Kathy Reichs and it could not be more different from her usual fare. Sunday 'Sunnie' Night PI has a chequered career and a traumatic past she is haunted by and low self esteem. She is ex-military serving in Afghanistan and an ex-cop who quit because she couldn't bear the idea of a desk job after an incident that left her with a disability - one eye and scarring. She is living the life of a reclusive hermit on Goat Island, just off the coast of South Carolina. In the expectation that it will do her good, her foster father, Beau, encourages her to take up a year old cold case. This is to take Sunnie to Chicago and numerous other cities.

Rich Charleston resident, Opaline Drucker, lost her daughter and grandson in the bombing of a Jewish school. Her teenage granddaughter, Stella, is missing assumed to be dead or kidnapped. She seeks justice and Stella found. With deep misgivings, Sunnie agrees to take on the case and heads to Chicago where the bombing occurred. This is an investigation with further deaths, the involvement of cults, and the slowly dawning realisation that further horrors are in the pipeline. Sunnie is aided by her brother, Gus, who is a significantly friendlier personality than Sunnie. In a fast paced read with twists, a determined Sunnie is not afraid to shoot first, ask questions later, in an action, fuelled race to prevent further tragedies taking place.

The character and personality of Sunnie is all jagged edges with a cutting wit. She has mental health issues and trauma that has to be relived as the case opens emotional wounds. I enjoyed the story well enough but felt it lacked the emotional heart to fully engage me. Deeper characterisation is sacrificed for greater emphasis on plot and action. This might appeal to other readers more in search for this more descriptive type of action novel. Thanks to Random House Cornerstone for an ARC.

Sunday Night...the new investigator!
Sunday's childhood involved many years living in the shadow of an evil 'religious' cult, similar to the Branch Davidians. Somehow she and her twin brother escaped just before the 'Crossing', since when she has been in the military and police world. Now, working on her own, she is investigating a young woman's disappearance.
The backstory of the childhood abuse is woven carefully into the story, giving a birds eye view into Sunday's emotions. She reminded me slightly of the tense Lisbeth Salander, ready with a quick retort, independent to a degree, and spiky in personality.
I thought it was a superb book and hope there may be others featuring Sunday and her slightly surprising twin brother.

I'm actually not that keen on the Tempe Brennan books by this Author so I was interested to read a different kind of book by her. I have to say that there was lots of action and a great character to build a whole new series on.

I would like to thank Netgalley and Random House UK, Cornerstone for an advance copy of Two Nights which introduces ex army and police officer, Sunday "Sunniest " Night.

Sunnie is a bit of a mess with a troubled childhood, service in Afghanistan and a debilitating eye injury that ended her police career. She has locked herself away on Goat Island, off the coast of South Carolina, where she leads a solitary, almost hermit-like existence. Worried about her, her foster father arranges for her to meet Opaline Drucker, a rich, eccentric Charleston lady who wants her to find the people who blew up her daughter and grandson and possibly kidnapped her daughter. It turns out to be a wild adventure.

I found Two Nights so enjoyable I couldn't put it down and read it in one sitting. It is very much in the style of David Baldacci with its improbable plot and high octane action but leavened by Sunnie's caustic humour. As I said the plot is improbable but it's addictive and I found myself so immersed and desperate to find out what happens next that it didn't register until I'd finished. The novel starts in Charleston but quickly moves to Chicago where the bombing happened and on to various other locations where Sunnie always manages to kick ass and gain more information.

Sunnie is a real heroine as she overcomes various job related injuries to win through - she might get knocked down but she's soon up and running again. There are hints about her troubled childhood but nothing really concrete until the end of the novel so the reader is left wondering. She is ably assisted in her endeavours by her brother, Gus, but he, again, is a bit of a mystery. They have a good chemistry and work well together but are not particularly well developed as characters. I do not think that this matters as much as it might in another novel as this is a plot driven novel.

Two Nights is a good thriller so I have no hesitation in recommending it as a good read.

I would like to thank Random House UK and NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read ‘Two Nights’ by Kathy Reichs in exchange for my honest and unbiased review.
Sunnie Night is a private investigator who has a juvenile record and less than exemplary military file. When Opaline Drucker contacts her, Sunnie enlists the help of her twin brother Gus to find the killers of Mrs Drucker’s daughter Mary Gray Bright and grandson Bowen, and discover what happened to her grand-daughter Stella.
Sunnie Night is a quirky character, working in an unorthodox manner and getting results. I’ve enjoyed all of Kathy Reichs’ novels featuring Temperance Brennan and when I saw ‘Two Nights’ I thought it would be similar, but it definitely isn’t. I've thoroughly enjoyed reading this book, it has an unexpected ending and keeps the reader guessing.

This a departure from Ms Reichs Temperance Brennan series - which I have enjoyed in the past .

The book took me a while to get into - initially I found it difficult to relate to the main character ....Sunnie , but I persevered and found that it was worth the effort .

Sunnie is traumatised by her troubled past and has spent years building a new life for herself .
A girl has gone missing after an explosion - is she dead ? is she in hiding ? or has someone taken her ?
Sunnie must face the demons of her past in her race to resolve this case .....can she ? or will she succumb to those demons again when the truths of her past come to the fore ?
This book was a departure from the Authors 'norm' and whilst I found it enjoyable overall , I did have to persist with it .

The story of Two Nights, Sunday and Gus, Sunnie an ex-cop playing private Investigator embarking on a mystery that has yet to be solved. I always feel like I've learnt something from Kathy Reich's books and this was no exception, whilst less technical it was more about personal growth and acceptance.
There are similarities in the main characters personality to Reich's Bone series, with Sunnie a likable lead and her internal dialogue flowing seamlessly to keep you interested. I was annoyed & pleased I missed what was suddenly an obvious misdirection - I hope this is the first of a new series as it feels like theres still alot to learn about the group.

I was just a bit slow in connecting with the main character in this book. and I didn't enjoy this as much as the Temperance Brennan series. It was an easy read and very interesting but I came to the conclusion that I really disliked Sunday! She is a very strong character and the book has murder, bombs and zany religion to keep the reader interested. Plenty action and thrills, this would be a good book to take on holiday. Thank you Net Galley for my copy. I reviewed on Goodreads.

This is the first time I have read Kathy Reichs and I could not get in to this book. I lost interest very quickly as I felt it was drawn out. As it is a negative review I will not be reviewing on Amazon or twitter.
