Tangled in Sin is the fifth book in Lavinia Kent's popular Bound and Determined Series but, it's also the start of a new set of characters so it can be read as a standalone. Here, Madame Rouge has now turned over her beloved and infamous brother to Madame Blanche. Madame Blanche being from the ton has her own sets of problems to deal with including a meddling brother and a curious but equally concerned best friend. A case of mistaken identity and a failed abduction results in James and Sin being trapped in a small cabin during a storm. She knows who he is, he doesn't. He thinks she works for Madame Blanche, while she thinks he is there to rescue her. What happens next is enough to create a scandal of its own.
Taken as an erotica romance Tangled in Sin will have you fanning yourself with those oh so seductive and hot scenes between James and Sin. The beginning encounter however may have questions of consent in play but its address quickly enough. As a romance it doesn't fall into an instant love scenario except for Sin's part, James realistically takes time to declare his own feelings.
I do rate it a 5 for erotica and a 3 for romance.
Lavinia Kent is one of the best erotic historical romance writers around, and her books never disappoint. Tangled in Sin is all that I expected and more. She delivers an entertaining and endearing love story with scorching sex scenes that will make your Kindle catch fire. I've loved this entire series.
'Tangled in Sin' by Lavinia Kent is book Five in the "Bound and Determined" series. This is the story of Cynthia 'Sin' and James. I have been jumping in and out of this series so for me this was a standalone book.
Sin has sneaked into a Brothel that she has heard her childhood best friend now owns. Sin wants to see if its true and if she can help her. But Sin learns that her friend feels that this is her life now since she has a child out of wedlock. While Sin is there her friends brother comes to also see what he can do. Sin hides as she knows that no one can see her there or her reputation will be ruined. James can't talk his sister into a different life but he plans to do something.
When James runs into Sin on this stormy night he doesn't know who she is but thinks she works for his sister at her brothel. James knows she looks familiar but his attraction to her blinds him to think hard on it. Sin has always liked James and they all used to play together but she hasn't seen him for years. Now she is swept away with him and their night encounter.
What will happen next...will Sin fall as her friend has or will James ensure that doesn't happen.
Another Hot read by Ms. Kent

This no nothing more than soft porn, I had to turn more pages, than I read. When people resort to this type of writing, they should be in a trash category! I do not recommend! Don't waste your money! He treats her like a tramp!
My honest review, in return for this ARC, is that Lavinia Kent has such a way of telling a story. The title of this book could not be any more appropriate. A story of when things go awry and yet end in perfection. Good read!
Lord James, son of the Duke of Scarlett, does not approve of his sister Jasmine’s lifestyle or her occupation as the proprietor of Madame Blanche’s Club for Gentlemen of Taste. Although James has been a client of London’s most notorious brothel for years, it’s no place for a lady, especially not the daughter of a duke, or for her fatherless child. James devises a daring plan to rescue Jasmine from her life of debauchery and salvage what’s left of her good name. Instead, in a case of mistaken identity, he inadvertently entangles Lady Cynthia Westhope into his world of dark fantasies and taboo curiosities. And Cynthia (Sin) is very curious indeed.
Kent’s latest novel allows the reader to explore erotic pleasures through the naïve eyes of neophyte Cynthia Westhope, under the tutelage of Lord James, her capable and attentive teacher. Well-timed humor softens Cynthia’s bold adventure into sex and sensuality that far surpasses her prior notions of chaste wedding night coupling. Ah, so many pleasures, so little time. Sweet, sexy, superb.
Seduction vs. Smut
From the Merriam-Webster dictionary.
Seduction: the enticement of a person to sexual intercourse; something that tempts, attracts, or charms
Smut: language, pictures, or stories that deal with sex in an offensive or obscene way
Seduction scenes require a much lighter hand, and in my opinion, more skill. Rand writes seduction (although there's a touch of smut too), and she does it exceedingly well. If this is what you're looking for, you won't go wrong with any of her books. I consider it a bonus that each one is well plotted, featuring multilayered characters.
I absolutely loved Sin and James. This story was a wonderful easy read and at the end had you wanting Jasmine to find her Happy Ever After as well. I hope there is more to come~
The book is well written, flows nicely, has steamy love scenes, amusing dialogue, a very sweet albeit misguided hero and a lovely declaration scene. Although this is part of a series, it could easily be read as a stand alone title.
I started to put this book down several times and not finish it. But I must say that the chemistry between Cynthia(Sin) and James did peak my interest. And since I agreed to give an honest review I felt I should finish the book and do so. The book was much more erotic than I would normally choose to read. I did find the book well written and the bond that pulled Cynthia and James together was very luring to read. When the book ended I thought It left a few unanswered questions to the story. I suppose those questions will be answered in the next book. I probably would not recommend this book to friends because of the nature of the contents.
When Ruby/Madame Rouge left her brothel in the hands of her fallen half-sister Jasmine, she never could have imagined the new adventures it could bring. Madame Blanche may be inexperienced, but she is determined to create the best life for herself and her baby daughter. Jasmine's old compatriots aren't ready to let her go quietly, but at least one, Cynthia "Sin" Westhope, shows curiousity rather than condemnation.
Sin doesn't fully understand Jasmine's determination to leave the world they grew up in, but she respects the bond between mother and child and is daring enough to love the bond she and her old friend share. However, her bold visits to Madame Blanche's get her kidnapped by someone who thinks he knows the best way to change Jasmine's mind and puts her into a thoroughly compromising situation with a childhood crush who has grown into a stunning example of a man.
My favourite part of Lavinia Kent's books is that they tend to focus on female agency, particularly in the realm of kink and BDSM. However, I felt that Tangled in Sin made several missteps early in the plot. Unless the hero of a BDSM romance is set up as a submissive I generally presume that he will have several domineering traits, some of which may annoy me more than others. James rubbed me the wrong way from the start when he was (historically I'll give him) convinced that he knew the best choice to make for Jasmine, even at the expense of separating her from her infant. However, he pushed me over the edge when he decided to initiate a sexual encounter with a half asleep woman because a. he presumed she was a prostitute b. she was rubbing her butt against his crotch in her sleep. I recognize that dubious consent doesn't bother some readers, and my main disappointment was that Ms. Kent's previous books have focused so heavily on consent and clear choice. From that point on James needed to really rebuild himself to satisfy me as a romantic hero.
Sin, on the other hand, charmed me from the moment she showed up at Madame Blanche's to confirm whether or not the new proprietor is her old friend. She refuses to take no for an answer and wears Jasmine down enough that she is allowed to visit regularly. Although she has no real sexual experience Sin allows herself to explore what makes her feel good, and even though she has fantasized about James for years she won't settle for being told what to do or dictated to just because she is a woman. Every moment of her submission is a conscious choice, and her resistance to marrying without a few caveats of her own reveal a young woman who has learned her own mind.
James may have disappointed me some, but the sex scenes between the main couple sizzled (although they had a little less bondage/kink than I prefer). After the first disappointing encounter Sin does have clear choices, and there is sweet sequence where they manage to sneak away from an elderly chaperone to steal an interlude. James still hadn't redeemed himself in my eyes, and I wasn't completely sold by the end of the book, but I did see him make small steps to valuing Sin's ability to make choices.
James' personality marred a lot of my enjoyment of Tangled in Sin, as much as I adored his heroine. I did ultimately enjoy most of the book, but I wish Sin could have gotten a hero who thought better of women. He does grow some by the end of the story, but I had a hard time letting go of my first impression.
4 Lascivious Regency Portraits out of 5
This is an erotic novel set in England during what could be the Regency or early Victorian era. If you approach this novel knowing you will be reading erotica, you will thoroughly enjoy it. If you sit down and expect a sweet or thrilling romance novel, you will be thoroughly disappointed. There are numerous sex scenes, and they are all explicit. You’ve been forewarned.
Lady Cynthia, the heroine, wants to help her friend Lady Jasmine, the owner of a brothel and unwed mother. Lady Jasmine can't seem to decide if she wants to be left alone or not. She tells Lady Cynthia to go away, but permits her to visit the next day. Later, she offers Lady Cynthia refuge when she flees Lord James. Lady Jasmine’s predicament is not resolved in this novel which I found quite irritating.
Lord James is Lady Jasmine’s brother. He also wants to help his sister and restore her to her rightful place in society. His rescue attempt does not go as planned and he ends up alone in a cottage with Lady Cynthia who has been infatuated with him since she was a girl. Curiosity killed the cat, and it certainly gets the better of naive Lady Cynthia in this novel.
I never warmed up to Lord James. He is not my kind of hero. I personally found him to be a reprobate, and it was not solely due to his deviant sexual interests. The man showed very little restraint. Self-control is sexy. Building sexual tension before letting the main characters jump into bed is titillating. There were moments I wanted to smack the hero’s head! He initiates sexual intercourse with Lady Cynthia under the assumption that she's a whore. Once he knows who she is, he still doesn't resume the role of an honorable gentleman. He says they should get married, but also suggests they experiment (sexually) while they're stuck in the cottage together. Later, Lord James tells Lady Cynthia that he wants to f@ck her between her breasts, in her mouth, and in her arse. No gentleman would speak to an unmarried, gently-bred lady that way. Yes, he'd just deflowered her, but once he knew her true identity, the smutty talk needed to end. Later, he ties her up. He tells her not to talk so he can focus on what her body is telling him. Excuse me. What is your conscience telling you, my lord? What is your sense of honor telling you? Did I mention ALL of this happens before they even kiss? How unromantic! There's a scene at his aunt's house where he convinces her to masturbate while he watches. Ladies, we all can hold our orgasms until we're commanded/given permission to release them, right?
The hero feels Lady Cynthia is the perfect woman for him. I'm sure he would think that. She's an attractive, eligible member of the upper class who is so infatuated with him, she'll let him do whatever he wants with her body. What man wouldn't love that?
Under a different set of circumstances, the erotic scenes in this novel would have been fine with me. If Lady Cynthia had been described as a young lady on a quest for sexual discovery, I could have tolerated the frequent sex scenes. If the couple had been married, it would have been much easier to digest. Because this is a historical novel, I simply could not find these circumstances plausible. There are, no doubt, readers who will love this book, but I don't want my virginal historical heroines engaged in kinky sex before they get married.
This is Cynthia and James story. He is a marquess. She is very curious. Her good friend runs a brothel. Her friend is the marquesses disgraced sister. He has wanted Cynthia for a long time. He will teach her all about sex. This book was very sexy. I can't wait to read others in the series.
This is a quick read. I read it in a weekend. I enjoyed the story very much. The two main characters, Cynthia and James, were both very likeable. It was evident that they belonged together, if Cynthia could just make up her mind. I would have liked to have the whole bondage/control theme developed more. While there certainly was some, I felt like the story could have delved into that a little more. It's a great read if you are looking for something light, with a happy ending.
I like this author. Very good historical romance with great sex!
Absolutely loved the book. It is highly erotic and extremely well written. The love scenes between Sin and James are described in such an erotic way that you feel as if you are an actual observer. It captivates you to the point you can't wait until their next encounter. Fantastic book.
I hope Jasmine has her story coming next.
Whoo! I need a fanning-myself emoji right about now.
Lavinia Kent’s latest, “Tangled in Sin” is hot, hot, hot. The latest in her Bound and Determined series introduces Madame Blanche’s brother James and their childhood friend Cynthia Westhope. Both are “bound and determined” to save the newly appointed madame from her fate as a brothel owner, and James takes his plans to extremes, accidentally netting Cynthia in his trap.
While the book may be a tad light on complicated plot structures, it more than makes up for it on the sensual index.
I haven't read a story like this one in a long time. It was refreshing to read Cynthia and James' story of friends to lovers. This was the first book of this time period that I have read where the scenes were so vivid. Well written and blush worthy. The reader is easily immersed in to the world and time period.
I used to be a fan of this series but now it is too formulaic and not as imaginative as the previous ones. I really love the Lavinia Kent's previous books but Tangled in Sin was a disappointment.
I'm not sure if I will be continuing the series to be honest.
*I received this ARC from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review*
This is one of those books you cannot put aside. In the beginning, during the first few pages, I wasn't sure where this might go because I didn’t read the plot outline. Anyway, in the very beginning, when Sin, Lady Cynthia Westhope, visits her best youth friend in Madame Blanche’s, one of the top brothels in London, I thought in the beginning that it’s about Madame Blanche’s and indirectly it is but not really.
The whole book is about social constraints. What society does to a young unmarried woman who gets pregnant because there weren’t too many options but in any case, the baby wouldn’t be raised by her but given to a foreigner. And she’d be married to a man who’d be willing to oversee her not existing virginity. But Madame Blanche never wanted to give her daughter up …
Jasmine, Madame Blanche, has a loving brother – James, the second son of the Duke of Scarlet – who wants her back with the family and he’d give up her happiness and live with her daughter just to see her socially restored because the ton is already talking. So he arranges Jasmine to be kidnapped, the only problem is that he isn’t kidnapping Jasmine but Sin because the young woman is wearing Jasmine’s white coat. And when he finds the girl abandoned in the sheppard’s cottage he doesn’t remember her so he takes some liberties with her, takes her virginity.
However, he puts Sin into the same position his sister was, she could be with child. Of course, the storyline doesn’t end here.
.
.
I really enjoyed this storyline and I think my favorite side character wasn’t even Jasmine but Aunt Prudence and her over 90 years of wisdom. She was fun, real fun.
Next to that James really went through a lot of character development in my opinion. In the beginning, he was only thinking of what the ton thinks about how this would influence his father and brother because the Duke of Scarlet isn’t the “nicest” person. But he learns what a unmarried woman has to face when a man decides to (maybe) impregnate her.
.
Well done! Rating: 5*****
PS: As much as I like the cover of the book it doesn't fit the story at all.
