Another terrific beach read for the summer. I am adding this to our collection. Keep up the writing!
A excellent read by beloved author Mary Alice Monroe. This is a stand alone novel. I am a fan of the authors work and am thrilled to review this book for Net Galley.
This is a departure from her usual books in that it examines grief and starting over after losing a loved one,
The writing is classic Mary Alice Monroe and includes a lovely beach setting and a beautiful old beach house under renovation. This has all the classic elements to make it a great beach read. The perfect beach setting, drama mixed with happiness and starting over .I loved it . You can relate to all the characters, the beautifully described location and the plot is pleasing and flows as gently as a breeze off the ocean.
A perfect book to enjoy in a chair by the beach.
Thank you for the ARC which did not influence my review. Well done to the author.
This was a decent read. I don't quite feel that it was the author's best, but it was okay for me.
Throughout the whole book, I didn't get the beach read feel. Both of the main characters were experiencing loss or were just sad. It was kind of a downer for me with that going on. It just wasn't as upbeat as most beach reads. It was very different. A good read, just not what I expected.
Thanks to Gallery, Threshold, Pocket Books and Net Galley for providing me with a free e-galley in exchange for an honest, unbiased review.
Beach House for Rent is the fourth installment in Mary Alice Monroe's Beach House series. If you have not read the previous three books I highly recommend you do (because they a wonderful) but it is not necessary to enjoy this book. I came to love this series only recently and in my opinion each book gets better and better. Cara Rutledge seems like an old friend to me. Beach House for Rent is the perfect beach read and I absolutely loved it!
This is a great book; this is the fourth book in the Beach House series written by Mary Alice Monroe. This is a great book with a wonderful story and well developed characters. This book will keep you reading long into the night. If you are looking for a great book, then you need to read this book. I am looking forward to reading the next book by this great author. I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader’s copy of this book. The free book held no determination on my personal review.
Monroe never fails to entertain her readers with descriptions of the low country so lifelike you can almost taste the salt air. Her characters capture your heart while they educate you about such things as beach erosion and coastal wildlife in the most enchanting way possible. This is my first book by Mary Alice Monroe and I can see why her books are loved by so many. Beach House for Rent is Book 4 in a series, but can be read as a standalone. The story is about two very different women who find themselves together under tragic circumstances. A beautiful relationship develops between the women which will tug at the heartstrings of the reader. You’ll find yourself laughing and crying at times. This is a deep read, touching on topics such as mental illness and dealing with pain and loss. This is a beautifully written story about persevering through hard times, building true friendships in times of need, personal growth, change, learning to cope with past and present tragedies, and love.
The author does such a fine job at drawing the reader into the story that you almost feel like you’re there on the beach, smelling the salty air, and listening to the canaries sing! This is a heartwarming and delightful read you won’t want to miss out on!
I enjoyed reading this novel. It is a perfect summer read. I also think that it makes women think about their lives and how very important it is to make your own decisions. I would love to see a another novel that explores Cara and Heather's lives further.
"Beach House for Rent" is a great summer beach read. I had not read the previous books of the Beach House series so this was my introduction to the characters and had no problems picking up the story. Heather Wyatt has had a rough few years and after a tragic accident she has been left with extreme social anxiety, however she has been selected as an artist to create a collection of mailer stamps about shorebirds. Her father decides to rent her a beach house for the summer so she can paint and try to break out of the shell she is in. Cara Rutledge is all to happy to rent her mother's beach cottage. When tragedy of her own strikes Cara these women learn that they need each other for support and to start moving forward.
“Beach House for Rent” is the newest novel from Mary Alice Monroe. I have to admit I have not read all her books. This book is 4th in a series, but I didn’t feel like I missed out on anything having not read the first two books.
I hate to sound like a broken record, but I found that I laughed and cried in equal measure as I was reading. Her character development was flawless, the story so intriguing and the writing was delightful. I do not live near the ocean, but I felt the sea air a time or two during my reading. Oh, and the canaries were such a great touch and truly gave Heather more development even from the beginning.
I‘m not a believer in retelling the story so let me say one thing. If you love heartwarming stories, read this book. You’ll get a lot of detail about the islands, the birds, the people and the turtles. It will make you wish you lived there, particularly if you live in the Midwest! I’m ready to pack my bags!
Thank you to NetGalley and Gallery, Threshold, Pocket Books for the opportunity to read and review this book.
Many years ago, I read the first book in the Beach House series. I remember really enjoying it. I don't know why I didn't continue on with the series as they came out, but when I saw this new one, I thought I would see if I could catch up without reading the other books in the series that I missed.
This is the 4th book in the series but I didn't feel lost at all. I read it as if I didn't know some of the characters and that was ok. Cara and Heather are two women from different backgrounds who are searching for peace in their lives. This beach house, owned by Cara, is the place where their lives come together.
It was a nice, contemporary story for the summer. I was able to feel what the characters were going through and cheer them on along the way. As I was reading this, I wanted to be in a beach house and experience a slow down of life.
Beach House for Rent by Mary Alice Monroe is the story of two broken women who help each other through difficulties. Cara owns the beach house and rents it out to a younger woman name Heather. Heather comes to the beach house to focus on her art and overcome her agoraphobia. Shortly after the house is rented, Cara faces a sudden tragedy and desperately wants to be home in the beach house. The two women end up sharing the house for the summer and guide each other through their troubles. Overall, I thought this was a well written book, although it was not a light hearted beach read.
I first fell in love with Mary Alice Monroe and her fabulous books when I read The Beach House. If you haven't read a Mary Alice Monroe book, you are in for a treat! You can read this book as a standalone or read The Beach House and then read this one as it follows the characters 10 years later. I do not post spoilers in my reviews as I don't think that's fair to any potential readers. You won't be disappointed adding this one to your list of summer reads. Even better, come visit the SC Lowcountry and bring this or one of her many books along.
I was given an advanced reader copy of this book in exchange for my honest review, which I have left above.

When Mary Alice Monroe wants to take you to the beach, you happily follow. We once again head back to that lovely little beach house in the lowcountry. There is love, heartache, tears, joy, redemption. This time we have Heather Wyatt, a young woman so scared of life since the death of her mother in a car accident that she blames herself for. Heather has been commissioned to sketch the shorebirds for a stamp collection. She is immediately drawn to the little cottage, even smelling our dear departed Lovie’s jasmine. Heather has been living with her father, who recently remarried, and depending on him for much of her life. It’s just Heather and her canaries now. (Which I did not realize had so many different types and my grandmother used to have an aviary with canaries when I was small.) Cara has been wondering just what her life is going to be like, especially when tragedy hits, but she knows she wants to keep the beach house no matter what.
This beach house is so redemptive. We all know that things will work out in the end and I am perfectly happy with that. I went into this book knowing and being completely satisfied. I feel like I was visiting old friends and making a few new ones. Mary Alice Monroe had me at the very first Beach House novel and hopefully, she will keep me reading for a long, long time. This is the perfect summer read. Now, to find a beach…
I happily received a copy of this book from Netgalley and Gallery Books in exchange for an honest review.
The beach setting is as much a character as the people in Mary Alice Monroe’s latest Beach House for Rent. Monroe’s descriptions are so vivid that I could almost hear the waves crashing and smell the sea salt in the air. The animal lover in me was so happy about all of the information on the nesting sea turtles, the pelicans and the other ocean life featured in this charming book. Gorgeous pictures of shorebirds marked each chapter and environmental conservation was an underlying theme throughout. The book’s main focus was on the relationship that occurs between Cara (the landlord of the beach house) and Heather (her summer tenant) as the two women find themselves struggling to overcome separate tragedies and figure out their place in the world. A lovely nod to friendship and healing, A Beach House for Rent is the perfect addition to your vacation bag. Many thanks to Netgalley and Gallery Books for my advanced copy in exchange for my honest review. 3.5 stars.
This book has strong female characters and is a very enjoyable read.
Beach House Series
Descriptions will take you away - you will feel the breezes and hear the sounds. Travel to the low-country.
A shy, agoraphobic, discombobulated misfit who has social anxiety moves into the beach house.
The turtle club and the Birds of Prey Center, and their work adds the nature and preservation element we all need to think about.
I want to rent this beach house. I want to live in this area and help with the turtles.
I love Mary Alice Monroe's book- I have read all of her books so my collection is complete. I will be looking forward to her next book!.
Two women meet through a beach rental, both have suffered the loss of a mother and a bond is formed. While renting, Heather learns to confront her fears, personal growth, and finds love with a lowcountry man, Bo. Cara, the homeowner, becomes widowed and moves back to the rental with Heather. She learns to find peace with herself and a new direction at this crossroads in her life. The bonds of friendship, love, and creating lives worth living, along with a touch of wildlife preservation, make this a touching read perfect for summer!
I received my copy from Netgalley
I appreciated the information about shore birds and canaries. I loved the feeling of being at the beach.
However, I read the book because of the following description: "While they start out as strangers, as everything around the women falls apart they learn that the only thing they can really rely on is each other." For me, this was misleading. I would have enjoyed the book more if the description had been closer to the storyline itself. It was off-balancing fior me as a reader.
3.5 stars
Wonderful story of two women in very different stages of life and how one very special house and community bring them through their struggles and through to the other side.
I really liked both Heather and Cara. Life had not been easy for either of them in various ways. Heather's journey was on of blossoming; she's 26 and semi independent for the first time. We see her come into her own as she conquers fears, tries new things, accomplishes what she set out to do and even falls in love.
For Cara, at 50, her journey is one of being knocked down and picking herself back up again.
These two come together and end up helping each other find the right path for themselves. There are a lot of life lessons for everyone and it was a wonderful sojourn to the Beach House.
