What’s it About? Mackenzie Ellinsworth is used to doing things on her own and when she has a chance to open her own bar and restaurant she’s determined to not only do it alone but do it her way. Except that in order to open the bar, she needs to work with playboy chef Connor Branding. Connor on the other hand is determined to prove to Mack that he’s not the guy she thinks he is but with them working together the only thing they seem to do is argue, until one night their arguing turns into a hot kiss which turns into something even hotter. But when it comes to Mack, nothing is easy.

Overall Reaction to the Story? So Make Me Beg was the first book by Rebecca Brooks I’d ever read and I have to say that I enjoyed it! Mack was the very definition of stubborn but Connor wasn’t far behind. I admired Mack’s determination to be a success on her own terms but at the same time her stubbornness sometimes got to me. She made her life harder than it had to be because she just refused to budge on her ideas and she had a hard time letting go of the past.

She really did complicate things but at the same time Connor’s pride had me ready to kick his butt too. I liked the guy, he was fun, funny, and had a sweet and tender side to balance out that deliciously dirty mouth of his. But man oh man he had so much pride that he was responsible for a lot of the obstacles between him and Mack. The physical chemistry was on point but once the sexy time was over these two had constant miscommunications and made a lot of assumptions about one another that lead to so much angst and frustration. Some of the frustration was on my part because there was A LOT of pride and assumptions going on and just a general avoidance of speaking clearly to one another. It did get a little tiring after awhile since about two thirds of the book is basically them bickering and misunderstanding each other.

Overall though, I enjoyed the small town feel without the over the top nosey supporting cast.

Mack was a strong character with flaws and Connor was a closet nice guy with a lot of pride but together they were forced to really take a look at themselves and make positive changes in their lives. I liked Rebecca Brooks’ style of romance so this definitely won’t be my last time reading this author.

Click It or Skip It? Click It. Connor has s dirty mouth. Enough said.

This was a great love story between two very different individuals. To avoid any spoilers, I will say that there are reasons why Mack always "goes it alone", and those reasons are part of what makes her so different from Connor, or so it seems. She doesn't want to risk her heart and comes across as emotionally aloof. Connor comes from a family with money and high expectations. He has an easy come easy go attitude, including his playboy way with women. Different backgrounds, different attitudes.

So how do these two seemingly opposites attract? Well, their chemistry is off the charts! Unfortunately, while that's the easy part for them their work, the real story, is them connecting on an emotional level.

While I loved the depth of character development in both characters, some of it seemed a little too overstated, i.e., in Mack's view, Connor is a manwhore. We got that the first few times its mentioned. By the 5th or 6th time? Ok, still got it. Ditto with Mack being closed off emotionally. Again, yes - got the memo on that several times!

Having said that, the back and forth between them is amusing and when the emotional walls finally come down, they see each other in a way that is refreshing because although they BOTH have faults and made mistakes, they WANT to work on it, WANT to be together! Especially Connor. He really goes all out to show Mack how much he loves her and it was sooo romantic! You will be happy you picked this up!

I haven't read the first book in the series, but I plan to now!

Although I received an advance reader copy in exchange for a fair review, this is my own honest opinion.

This is the second story in the Men of Golds Mountain, and while rugged, hunky, outdoorsy types are definitely hot and get the motor running, I didn’t really feel the connection between Connor and Mackenzie was as all it could have been.

Some chapters left me a little bewildered, and I found myself going back a page or two to ensure I was following the plot. MAKE ME BEG is a short, quick, OK read to fill in the time, but it definitely could have been better.

This is a story of two people who have known each for three years, they're not sure if they really like each other, but they end up falling in love. It's been done many times but NOT LIKE THIS! Rebecca writes books that draw you in and keep you there till the last word is read. MacKenzie and Connor have wonderful banter that grates on each other but is a blast to read. The bar is going under and they both have an opportunity to be part owners with Sam (who we met in book 1) but neither agrees with what the other wants. Because they don't communicate and open up to each other, neither really knows the other well. I loved this book and hope there's another book of Men of Gold Mountain!!

mack and connor have been at cross-purposes for so long, that neither of them really knows what it is about the other that sets them off. they spend most of their time in make me beg not communicating effectively. at least, they don't communicate effectively unless they aren't wearing any clothing, in which case they know exactly what to do or say.

the thing is that mack and connor come from utterly different backgrounds and they willfully choose to believe the worst of each other at every turn. i've honestly never read a romance novel where the hero and heroine spent so much time angry and arguing with one another. and it's all so stupid because they really are on the same side. and if either of them could take a breath and express themselves calmly without the other one reacting like a bomb was dropped in their lap maybe things would be easier.

but then maybe the sex wouldn't be so good. who's to say? i mean, i think once they figure out that they can still have passion in their relationship without arguing every other word out of their mouths then it's all good. mack was such a prickly and difficult character, and while you get why she's built that way due to her background, her unwillingness to share her vulnerabilities with connor made things difficult. she was hard to like, she did her best to push him away, and when she finally got the distance she asked for, she spent her time pining for connor without doing anything real to fix the problem. this made her frustrating. because she was a character who should have been strong, who could have worn a proud badge of being a survivor, but who in the end, didn't really come off as strong or as someone who survived hardship, and that's a shame.

connor was easier to like, and part of me wonders if that's me being a bad feminist, because he was kind of a playboy. but like he wasn't committed to anyone. and there were so many things he did in the story that were such obvious proof of his strong feelings for mack. even when he was willfully misunderstanding her, he also couldn't stop worrying about her. he cared so much. and i think because he so clearly cared so much for her, even when he was screwing up it made it easier to forgive him.

Connor and Mack? Bring it on, and wow did she ever! Book 2 in the Gold Mountain series is crazy good. Connor, dear Lord deliver me. The mouth on that man.
Connor is Austin's friend from book one. You remember him right? Ok, put it on the list after you read this one.
Mack, bartender and Connor the chef are in their usual head to head, argue/ playful banter. Mack thinks he's a man whore and has no problem telling him to his face; and everything else she dislikes about him. The banter between these two is comical yet there is a serious side to it as well. I can't describe them, think bottle rockets on July 4th.

Things change when Sam comes in to talk to them; Diggers is no longer pulling a profit so the plan is to tear down, rebuild and start anew, right down to the menus. She offers Mack and Connor each part ownership, which they're both receptive to. This is also where the two paths diverge in a huge way.
He's got his ideas as chef, she's got her ideas for drinks but the main issue and the most contentious is she wants to name it Mackenzie's. He just goes over the edge. He doesn't offer up a better name, it's just a major sticking point. Add to this these two are now burning up the sheets, bar, picnic blanket.... and the steam and chemistry is just amazing. Connor explains to her why he hung around all this time-3 years when her biggest fear is that he'll always leave. What he doesn't understand is the reasoning beneath her fears. But the door has opened for conversation, and that at times runs from the ridiculous to the sublime in the very best of ways.
An innocent night out with Abbi, who I could have stuck my foot right square up her backside (she got on my nerves in a huge way), a great night between Connor and Mack and they're all having breakfast the next morning when Abbi starts running her mouth. Mack tells her to can it, she doesn't and Connor is crushed. Connor turns the tables on Mack, not knowing what she's been through and even though he's hurt he cuts her in pieces. I get where he was coming from, I also clearly see Mack's side. I see two people who couldn't sit and have an honest conversation out of fear.
So Connor does exactly what Mack has always feared he'd do. He leaves. She goes over to apologize and to make things right and it's over. He's packed and leaving. He feeds right into her insecurities and into his own feeling of less than.
Rebecca couldn't have written a more deep, emotional story about two people who want something (love) from each other and can't seem to get on the same page. It's been three years. The backstory is great. You don't have to read book one, this stands alone. The characters, ( minus Abbi) (I don't like her ok? Get over it) are real people with half a wit and intelligence. The complexities of the drinks and the food menu is great. Nothing in here not to love.
Couldn't have been better and the ending.... ahh.... gotta read the book. Sorry.
Great story Rebecca!! I loved it!! Bring on book 3
