The Magnificent Flying Baron Estate has a very frank and straightforward writing style that was simple, yet descriptive. It worked for the story it told and was enjoyable to read, with good flow and pacing. The dialogue stood out as the best written part of it; there were a lot of fun interactions between the characters, and the frequent accompanying illustrations were a nice addition too.
Throughout the book there were a lot of comments made (especially by W.B.'s parents, to and about him) that were dismissed and/or played as jokes — which felt varying degrees of uncomfortable depending on what was said. While the book's humour in general did not always work for me, it was specifically the parts like this that felt very much like they should not be treated as jokes that were awkward and unsettling.
W.B.'s friendship with Rose, on the other hand, was written, dealt with and developed much better: a solid heart to the book. Other relationships and interactions were interesting too, but the two main characters carried the rest of the story along with them. As individual characters they were both very well written, and the transitions from their interactions ranging from entertaining to heart-warming felt natural.
Although there were parts of the story that I could appreciate, I was disappointed overall. The Magnificent Flying Baron Estate has plenty of potential and a lot to like about it, but unfortunately too many things that built up along the way soured the reading experience for me.
A fantastic book full of adventures and fantasy and scientist parents.
