My Thoughts:
Earlier this week, I read Cheater by Rachel Van Dyken. I wasn't a big fan of the book, but I decided I wanted to read the next book in the duology, Cheater's Regret. I was more interested in the couple that's featured in Cheater's Regret, and wanted to know why Thatch did the things he did in Cheater. I'm glad I decided to pick up Cheater's Regret. I enjoyed it a lot more than Cheater.

There were still a couple of issues that I had with Cheater's Regret. Although the abusive behavior wasn't as prevalent in this book, it still happened a couple of times that made me uncomfortable. Austin displayed abusive tendencies toward Thatch during the first half of the book. I don't want to get into too much detail because I don't want to spoil the book for those that haven't read it. However, during one part of the book, she slits his tires. I understand being mad at someone, but there's no excuse for that level of payback. Another part of the book, she slaps him so hard that he loses his balance and staggers. And we won't even talk about the whole soy thing. He treats both instances as if she's being cute. To me, that's abusive behavior, and shouldn't be encouraged. As I've previously stated in my review of Cheater, women abusing men is a real thing, and most people just brush it off. That's one of my biggest pet peeves. I feel it should be acknowledged for what it is, not encouraged.

In Cheater's Regret, it almost seemed like Austin was two different characters. In the beginning of the book, I had to keep reminding myself that she was an adult in college because of her actions. She still lived with her parents. She also talked a lot about the classes she was going through, and needing to get good grades. The last thing that made her feel so much younger than what she is was her behavior. She was incredibly immature, so much so that it pulled me out of the storyline. I can't believe someone her age would act that way in real life. However, something happened around the fifty percent mark. All of a sudden, I was really starting to like her. It was almost like she became a completely different person. She stopped treating Thatch in an incredibly jerkish, abusive way. She became a lot more mature. The book started to focus less on her parents, and school, and more on her relationship with Thatch. Instead of being so selfish, she started helping those around her. Her and Thatch started to have a lot of chemistry, even though I still feel weird about their relationship based on her previous abusive behavior. From that point on, I really started to get into the book and enjoy it until the last sentence.

Even though it had a rocky start, I really did enjoy Cheater's Regret. I had a lot more fun reading it than I did reading the first book in the series, Cheater. I especially loved the last half of the book. Between the two books in this duology, I think that this was just an okay series for me. Without the problematic issues, I probably would have loved it. I will definitely continue to read Rachel Van Dyken's books though because I've loved most of her other books that I've read. She will always be one of my favorite authors.

I give Cheater's Regret: 3.5/5.

So good, so funny. Loved Thatch and Austin's story. My only issue is that it took so long for him to get to telling the secret. I think it was dragged out a little too long. Mostly because I didn't think he needed to be an ass and push her away for the ultimate reasons that he did.

Anyway, still love this series. I am on a Rachel Van Dyke high right now.

First off, full disclosure. I did receive an ARC for review. And I’m a little partial to Rachel’s books. But, with that said, I will be honest.
So, if you don’t know, this is the second book in this series. It can be read as a stand alone but you really do get more out of the story if you read “Cheater” first. We did a live review of that book if you want to check it out on the blog. And if you haven’t read it and are hesitant to read it because of the title… don’t be! This is definitely a good case for NOT judging a book by its cover!
OK…. Now, about “Cheater’s Regret.” If you listened to the live review of “Cheater” you heard me say that it wasn’t my favorite of all of Rachel’s books. (SEE! I can be honest even if she’s one of my favorites!) And I’d still recommend “Cheater” because it’s a good book. BUT… I LOVED “Cheater’s Regret”! I mean, who doesn’t love a redemption story, right? Both books are, but I guess I felt like Thatch and Austin were two much stronger characters than Lucas and Avery (Cheater). And Thatch’s actions came from a desire to protect Austin from what he thought would be devastating news. And a little fear. But mostly, he wanted to protect her. (Swoon!) I think my favorite thing about Thatch is that despite his career choice, he thinks Austin’s body is perfect just the way it is (double swoon!). As women, we face so many images and ideas of what the “perfect” body should be that are really unrealistic for some of us. And, for the most part, Austin is happy with her body and doesn’t want to change it. She’s stronger than she thinks she is and I really loved seeing her figure that out. And even when she’s angry with him, she still wants to protect him in some ways. I also loved knowing that Thatch thought he had done the right thing in the beginning but lost the fight to give in to Austin along the way because, deep down, he knew SHE was right for him. He wasn’t whiny about it, nor did he shut down his emotions because of his actions (Sorry, Lucas… this totally annoyed me about you!).
This is a romantic comedy, but there was still plenty of angst for those that like that sort of thing. Sprinkled with Rachel’s trademark sarcasm (which I obviously love), there’s plenty of LOL moments in this story, as well. She gives us strong characters that only think they are completely broken, but really are only slightly bruised. We see them come back from a place of brokenness to a happily ever after and they are stronger for it. The characters aren’t perfect, but in the end, they are perfect for each other, despite the flaws they know the other has. I give this book a rating of 5 stars! You should most definitely go 1-click this!!

Loved this book. I loved Austin and her love of junk food. I think this book was well written and is more about how cheating affects people than actual cheating. Yes it starts with Thatch kissing Brooke but after you hear his story it makes more sense. I would definitely read this story, RVD did it again.

I’m addicted to rom-coms. I absolutely love it when a book can be funny and sexy at the same time. And that’s exactly what Rachel Van Dyken gave me in Cheater’s Regret. It’s sexy, sweet, and funny and definitely kept me immersed from beginning to end. I usually don’t read “cheating” books and originally had stayed away from this serious. But...RVD! I had to. But trust me; this is so much more than that.

Austin is quirky and sweet. After being dumped, she does what we’ve all dreamed about doing. She gets even—oh the shenanigans she gets into! I was laughing so hard I got a stitch in my side. Now I was definitely expecting Thatch to be a bit of an alphahole, but he’s not! Sure, he’s cocky but he’s also got a tender and sweet side. The banter back and forth between these two was hilarious. They are both such great characters, well-developed and complex. The secondary characters were just as well rounded. I loved seeing Lucas and Avery again.

There was definitely some drama in this book but it was the kind that makes you laugh. It’s very low on the angst scale. Just a cute, easy read that had me laughing from start to finish. There definitely were some heartwarming moments as well. Seriously, don’t let the title scare you. This is definitely a must read of 2017 for me. I highly recommend it.

I voluntarily read an advanced reader's copy of this book.

I loved Lucas and Averys story. I love this series. It's fun with just the right amount of feels

Loved this book. It picks up from the first book, however you don't need to read the first book to follow this book as this book's main characters are the support characters from the first book. You get an epilogue that includes not only these characters but the characters from the first book. Read this book, you won't be disappointed

This book was amazing! I wasn't sure how I'd like it since I wasn't a big fan of Cheater. But this one was one of my favorite reads in awhile. Rachel did an amazing job with this story.

I loved Thatch and Austin! Loved watching how they interacted with each other. How they could have fun and mess around with each other. They had a fun, easy interaction. Though they did have their moments when they butted heads, but even that was funny at times!

Frogs, spiders and Dora the explorer!!!! This is a great book and I definitely recommend everyone read this story!!!

I LOVED THIS BOOK SO SO MUCH!
Make changes for you. Never for someone else. If it's for someone else, you'll never be happy. When you change for a person, you start a vicious cycle of discontent~Thatch
God I couldn't put it down! Cheater is one of my favorites in 2017. And I couldn't wait to read this book. I was curious about Thatch's story.
Sometimes, you reach a point where you know your pain is too ugly to share and that sharing it destroys what you love the most.~Thatch
I loved Thatch from the beginning. I loved to read about his 'problems', sometimes it was so funny! 😃 Beyond his 'fears', Thatch is perfect, a perfect bookboyfriend. 💓 He is hot, smart, a plastic surgeon. 😍
It never once occurred to me that she would be insecure after our relationship ended. Of course, it made sense, I was in the business of fixing flaws, so it was my job to find them. Only, whenever I was with Austin, the only flaw I saw-was me.~Thatch
What I loved about this book that we could read Thatch and Austin's thoughts too. This book was written in alternate POV. Thatch had problems and because of this he broke up with Austin.
Words hurt regardless of whether you mean them.~Austin
First I didn't know what to think about Austin's revenge. It was so childish. But later I became fond of her too. She totally fell in love with Thatch.
My biggest mistake in our relationship wasn't falling for Thatch, it was thinking that he needed me as much as I needed him.~Austin
I loved them together. I loved to read about how they flirted with each other. The complications in the story were perfect.
I was that stupid girl. The one I'd judged. And I fully embraced it. Because when it's you in that situation, you imagine yourself as the gamechanger- you imagine you're different.~Austin
I enjoyed reading the whole story. Thatch wasn't really a cheater. Austin was the first who touched his heart. He started caring about her. But he knew something, a secret, and because of this secret he broke up with the love of his life.
She destroyed my life the minute she walked into it. Because I kenw we were on borrowed time. And the idea of that-left me without the ability to breath.~Thatch
Oh, sometimes I could kiss him! He was so sweet...💓
No, you haven't gained weight, Austin, but if you had? Who the hell cares? Life is about living, it's about being happy, and if you want extra dessert, eat the extra fucking dessert, alright? (...) You're beautiful because you're you. Don't let a size define perfection, when it's your heart that I love the most.~Thatch
I recommend this book to everyone, who loved Cheater!

ARC from the author for an honest review
So just like book 1 this story isn't what you think, After seeing Austin and Thatch in book 1 i was so excited to see they were getting a book, I think i liked this one more than book 1 lol Rachel did such a great job i really felt for Austin and totally wanted to help her get back at Thatch. And the last part was just so good i couldn't put it down. If you loved book 1 then you really need to read this.

Austin and Thatch became serious quite quickly, until out of the blue Thatch cheats and calls it off, confusing Austin and breaking her heart. I actually found myself feeling sorry for not only Austin but for Thatch a bit as well. There were so many things that were against Austin and Thatch having a relationship, but they both had undeniably strong feelings for one another. I found myself frustrated wanting them to figure things out and see where their relationship could go. I loved this story, it made me laugh, get a bit angry, shocked me a bit and made me fall in love. I adored this story and would highly recommend reading it!!

Austin is furious and she wants revenge! She was pretty sure that she and Thatch were a perfect couple till he cheated by kissing Brooke. When Austin decides she will forgive him, Thatch tells her he doesn't want her and that he needs a woman, not a girl. Austin decides that revenge will be the best thing she does things to Thatch that are so embarrassing everyone knows about it. Thatch is a plastic surgeon so his practice could suffer if she keeps up her revenge but then her professor gives her an assignment that she needs Thatch's help for.

Thatch had a reason for breaking up with Austin that he can never tell her but the trouble is now he is with her all the time and is slowly killing him. The problems that Austin and Thatch get themselves into is hysterical and sometimes I found myself giggling at the antics. It really a sweet love story and a really fun read.

Okay guys, big surprise here but I’ll once again tell you how much I love RVD. SERIOUSLY. She’s one of my favourite authors. So once again, shocker, but I stayed up until 2am one night (morning?) just so I could finish this book. I didn’t care about sleep. I didn’t care that I had to be up in a few short hours, I cared about the fact that Thatch and Austin were in a bit of a tizzy and I needed all of the answers! I needed all of the smirks and the swoons and the laughs! And boy of boy did Rachel deliver in these elements.

It’s not a secret that I struggled during the first book in this series, Cheater. I found it to be way too dramatic, childish, over the top and ridiculous for my liking. I was absolutely flabergasted because I have loved every other one of Rachel’s books that I’ve read so far. So then Cheater’s Regret came along and I fretted for a while. I couldn’t figure out whether I would give this series another chance or not but I’m glad I did. Thatch and Austin were similar enough to e first couple that I could see why they were friends, but completely different in that they seemed more grounded. I found this book more enjoyable to read and the process was a lot smoother for me. I thought it was funny and cute, which were two big elements I missed in the first novel.

Something that I definitely wasn’t expecting but was thrilled to get too was a tiny amount of angst! Now don’t worry if you’re not a big angst fan, it’s quite minimal, but definitely enough to deepen the emotions and feel more for the characters. I follow these little bits like a breadcrumb trail.

That could also be surprising tender at times and I LOOOOOVVEEEDDDDD IT! okay, I’m calm. But really. He’s arrogant and cocky and has that damn smirk and you don’t know what to do so this kind of guy. But when needed, he was the sweetest and so caring towards our heroine, he won me over and he did so quickly.

I get that originally Austin wants answers but at some point you just have to let it go. It felt like at times she was becoming a bit of a crazy person. And yes, I’m aware girls can struggle moving on from relationships but really? Do you need to stoop to following him, interviewing him, demanding answers, making a revenge plan and slandering his professional image? That’s all fairly unreasonable and immature to me. Yes, she’s 22, but growing up in the spotlight with her father being the mayor of a major city and she should know much better.

There were two things (more than but I’m just going to focus on two) that I really liked about Austin. One was her feelings and emotions in regards to how Thatch treated her at different points in the book. I felt she was justified and right to feel like she was portrayed to. Her insecurities also really help the reader to connect with her more. Not only did this give the hero a chance to shine with his sweet and tenderness, but she felt more real. What girl doesn’t look at her body in a bad light at times? And even more so when you dated a plastic surgeon. I loved the small, confidence building moments between these two throughout.

When things are heating up and we’re getting closer and closer to the answers we’ve been looking for, there’s a bit of a jump to conclusion from one character creating a small twist and inLOVED it! The emotions, the reactions, the dialogue and inner monologues were all so spot on to me, I couldn’t flip my pages fast enough.

I found the big moment (suppose to be romantic) at the end was rather odd. I couldn’t understand the reasoning or the timing for how it happened, or more importantly, the location. It didn’t feel special to me, more so like proving a point, I guess?

Without spoiling anything, I just don’t understand the point of cliched endings. I personally didn’t find it sappy in a cute way, I was more so just underwhelmed based in the rest of the caliber of the story. It felt meh and overdone, nothing spectacular like I know this author usually puts out. Now don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed most of this book, but when the ending is that last little bit that you get, I was a bit disappointed. <—- MY opinion! Many readers are loving and swooning over this ending. Remember that I’m just grumpy, LOL.

Throughout the whole story, I had marked this as a four star read. It was enjoyable and fun, tender and caring; signed, sealed, delivered. But then the ending just sort of let me down. The entire story lead up to the plot and ending but then it was so easily just brushed to the side and forgotten. I had questions that I wanted answers to but received none. What I did get however was cliche and cheesy. Now I know l, sometimes that’s a given in romance novels but the rest of the story didn’t feel like this at all! I didn’t even see things going in this direction, the ending (while skipping the plot) just felt forced and fake to give the characters a characteristic and overdone HEA.

All in all, I think I will always love Rachel Van Dyken’s work, it’s hard not to, really. As a whole this series wasn’t my favourite but I did enjoy this book a lot more so than the first. I can’t wait to see what this author comes up with for us next!

*This is the second book in the Curious Liaisons series, but can be read as a stand-alone.

Thatch Holloway, Lucas Thorn’s best friend, is an ass, he’s funny, he’s in love, he’s sexy, and he’s got a few family issues. Austin Rogers is best friends with Avery Black and she’s young, naive, inexperienced, and is hellbent on finding out the truth as to why Thatch is a jerk.

Rachel Van Dyken has given another cheater book that isn’t actually a cheater book. It’s a sweet, sexy, romance filled with revenge plots and sensual kisses. In her signature comedy style, RVD has filled the pages with reasons to love and hate these characters. In one moment your heart can be aching, but the next moment you might be chuckling. Cheater’s Regret is a fantastic love story and I’ll say it again – this is not a cheating book!

I enjoyed the ups and downs, although I think that Austin showed her age a lot with her schemes. There is a ten-year age difference between the Thatch and Austin, and sometimes it shows. But, ultimately, they are made for each other and they complement each other’s personalities.

Peripheral characters play a role in this story as well, and we see quite a bit of Lucas and Avery. Personally, I liked the banter between Thatch and Lucas and always enjoy the RVD brand of humor. Another great weekend read for your Summer collection.
