I absolutely loved this first booked by Karen Sue Walker, a lovely cosy mystery! I'll admit I was a little disappointed to find out the book was only 192 pages long but it didn't seem like a 'short story'. Nothing was rushed through and I think if you made it any longer it would have dragged on. There were a couple of 'errors' in the writing like a word missing in a sentence here and there but nothing to complain too much about! I love Max's character and how she did solve the murder in the end but didn't get too involved in the investigation to seem corney! I liked all of the characters and this book was a good introduction to them all (I do hope this book is the first in a series!) I like the new assistant Keiko and love the two sisters next door. I like how they are a close knit 'community'. I didn't guess who the murderer was until a chapter or two before they were revealed! I loved reading about the bridal gowns and the fabric and her as a designer and was glad to read in the end Max isn't going back to New York which hopefully is a good lead onto the next book! I also liked reading about the sand gems she hunts for, it was interesting. I do hope there is another book and I would look forward to reading it! Thank you for letting me read and review this book, looking forward to her next one!
I’ve only recently discovered Cozy Mysteries and I have to admit to a new genre addiction (like I don’t have enough genre books to get read already – *grin*)). I got lucky to discover not only a new genre but a new author when I picked up Murder in White Lace in a handful of Cozy Mysteries to start with. I happen to be a reader who absolutely loves small towns with their gossip, secrets, closeness and friendships. Secondary characters always matter to me as they add to the general story with tidbits of information and a glimpse of what may become future main attractions in their own tales to be told. It’s true that the first story in a series always contains a bit of world building, but I wasn’t overwhelmed at all in the small town of Crystal Shores – and I immediately found the quirky characters that I enjoy plus a few suspects to grill in my mind.
I enjoyed Max. She’s one of those characters that you’ll feel comfortable with almost immediately. Oh, my goodness – Keiko – what a gem she is to this story. Like I said, I love a quirky character and she fits that bill perfectly. In all, this is an enjoyable, fun and quick mystery full of interesting characters and a list of suspects to cross off one by one.
If you enjoy Cozy Mysteries then Karen Sue Walker is an author you’ll want to keep an eye out for. Personally, I can’t wait to see what she has in store for us next.
*I received an e-ARC of this novel from the publisher via NetGalley. That does not change what I think of this story. It is my choice to leave a review giving my personal opinion about this book.*
A very cozy and entertaining tale of the story of an amateur investigation of a murder by an author who is new to me. Set within the background of a bridal store and a mandatory animal, a cat, this is a good light read. The author has started unravelling some threads relating to the characters that have left me waiting for the next book in the series to see how they develop. Recommend this book to anyone who is a fan of the genre.
With a small community full of friends and shop keepers, this is a gossip fueled cozy mystery.
From the theatre to the cafes, to the yarn shop and especially in the bridal store, this is a murder that hits close to home for Max Walters.
A cast of likable characters with a tangle of connections. There seem to be more motives than opportunities, and secrets will be uncovered. Will Max survive to realize her dreams of becoming a dress designer?
With a dashing detective and enough relationship turmoil to keep the reader guessing, this is an enjoyable cozy read.
I voluntarily read and reviewed this book.
