DNF
I received this E-ARC via Netgalley and Trillian in exchange for an honest review. I had heard about this book through a friends recommendation on GR. Based on the synopsis I was intrigued. I requested it on Netgalley. Unfortunately this was not for me.
The writing style is quite good and you can feel Zelda and Beckett. After reading for some time I came to realize that this book would be a little too depressing for my tastes. While I do think that these are relevant topics, it's just not for me.
Still recommend.
The Butterfly Project is exactly the kind of book I need--it was healing. Let me back up to say that in the last few weeks I've read several books that are the beginning of or middle of a series and they're all tortuous in their cliff hangers which means I've been in twisty knots of angst for days. I reached for this novel because I knew 2 things: less importantly it's a stand alone so I knew I'd have a resolution by the end, most importantly Emma Scott has an innate ability to cocoon me in her words and I knew I was in for a night of fantastic storytelling.
When I think about the story of Zelda and Beckett I think of it terms of these words: forgiveness, redemption, risk, and love. While these words sometimes apply to the characters differently, they all apply. Until they both took risks, they were living in a world of grey--a world that I imagined looked a lot like Zelda's comic book world. Thankfully, Zelda took a huge risk and asked Beckett for help and slowly their grey world began to warm with color and color. In order for the full technicolor picture could envelop them, they both had to find a way to be open forgiveness (and redemption). He had to be willing to let it be given to him and she had to discover if she had any to give. Again a huge risk because the inability to tap into that emotion would be the death knell to a future not crippled by the past.
Another huge emotion both of them tangled with was love. Allowing themselves to feel it seemed like a betrayal to the people they held onto in their past. Being in love meant a sort of happiness neither of them seemed able to wholly accept. It was hard as a reader to see that they both needed it and deserved it and yet they couldn't or wouldn't give in...until they did. And that moment---gahhh, they evoked these huge balloons of emotion inside of me.
I loved everything about this novel--their struggles emotionally. I loved their definition of home. I loved their crappy apartment and their friends. I loved Roy and Aunt Lucille. But I especially loved watching these two go from living lives that felt like they were just existing..just living in a black and white world (or gray) to living in full color.
*5 stars*
This is shockingly my first Emma Scott read despite the fact that I have more books of hers that, to this day, are unread in my kindle. This sorry state of affairs must be remedied ASAP because based on this book alone, I can tell that Ms. Scott’s writing is something special. I am giving this book 5 perfect stars because it makes my heart bleed for the main characters, smile on their easy friendship and just cheer them on to find their HEA. There is no sense repeating the synopsis as the writing is flawless and heartfelt, it made me feel every emotion there is for each and every character. Beckett and Zelda may be young (24) in age, but the baggage each of them were carrying at the start of the book could make an older person feel even more ancient. But they each carried on with it, ultimately finding forgiveness and redemption within themselves and from each other. This is just a beautiful book.
This book is a masterpiece! Another hidden gem. I cannot believe I had it for a few months on my Netgalley shelf without picking it up. What’s wrong with me?!?!?!?!
I absolutely loved this book. The writing is gorgeous, and it made me want to read more books by Emma Scott STAT! I loved the style. The book is told in the third person, and in dual POV, and I adored the different voices and the subtle beauty of the writing. My only small issue with the writing was the alternating of the tense if the verbs, mainly in the beginning of the book, but I think that is mostly an issue of editing that has probably been solved by now.
Both main characters are beyond amazing. Zelda and Beckett were just such great, lonely and sad people, who deserved all the good things in the world, because they had such amazing hearts. Zelda was trying to find a way to cope with what happened in her past, not allowing herself to see how anything that happened was not her fault. While Beckett believed that he had no right to happiness, because of what he did. They help each other see that they deserved forgiveness and acceptance. They deserved happiness. All the happiness in the world EVER.
The romance is a slow burn, and I thought it was perfect how they became friends, then partners, and only then just more. They both needed time to come to terms with how they felt for each other, so the pacing was PERFECT!
I found the plot pretty amazing too. I loved how it focused so much on the growth and acceptance of both Zelda and Beckett, because I love character driven books.
Overall, I loved pretty much everything about this book. The secondary characters are also pretty epic, and I loved the graphic novel aspect of the book, and how Beck and Zel find the perfect way to intertwine their lives in it.
I LOVED LOVED LOVED THIS BOOK, SO YOU GUYS SHOULD DEFINITELY PICK IT UP. SOON! IT’S THAT GOOD!
Emma Scott NEVER disappoints. Her storylines are unique and she writes so beautifully that you think you are living the lives of the characters. Phenomenal story.
This book had all the emotion you could possibly feel!
These characters went through so much and are just trying to find the light in the world.
This was a slow burn kind of love but when it finally happened, it was magic!
Free copy kindly received from the author via Netgalley, in exchange for an honest review.
The Butterfly Project was the first book that I've read by Emma Scott after a recommendation from a fellow reader.
I liked this book from the very start. It's written from the POV’s of Zelda and Beckett. Zelda meets Beckett when she's on the verge of leaving New York after having her Graphic novel rejected by several publishers.
Due to a change of circumstance, Zelda finds herself stranded in New York and ends up convincing Beckett, to take her in as a lodger.
Zelda and Beckett are both battling with major events in their pasts. Theirs is a story of guilt, regret and hopefully forgiveness and love.
Many issues are addressed in this book but it is written very well so it all fits together smoothly.
The Butterfly Project was a book that grabbed me very quickly and kept hold of me until the very end. I've already got my next two Emma Scott books lined up, ready to read.
Emma Scott, wow, just wow! The Butterfly Project is gut-wrenching, romantic, and powerful. A emotional story with real, genuine characters. Loved every second of reading this book!
Beautiful. Brilliant. Breathtaking. A must read for all readers.
I'm thinking of how to talk about this book without getting to look like it's just one more book about second chances and overcoming because it's so much more than this. The book tells the story of Zelda and Beckett, both marked by tragedies in the past and who have closed themselves to the world. They believe they do not deserve a second chance and that there is no happiness for them.
Narrated in the first person alternately by each of them, the writer shows how a simple answer, a simple Yes, a simple decision can trigger a whole series of events are they bad or good.
Zelda is trying to publish her Graphic Novel, but was rejected by the publishers where she presented her work, only one gave her a chance to change some details to make a story with HEART. Zelda does not understand what that means and she does not have much more money to stay in New York and find out.
Beckett is trying to move on with his life after serving his sentence for two years, he is currently on parole and works hard to get the bills due at the end of the month. He is a dedicated boy who accepts his punishment and just wants to survive.
When these two lost souls meet, they can not imagine how the course of their ways will be changed forever.
This is the first book I read from this writer and I become a fan of her writing. She succeeds in conveying the anxieties that haunt the characters very well and has not turned their story into something based on a sudden physical attraction that can fix all problems heroically. No, she slowly shows the paths to follow, the battles they have to face, and how they can heal one another's heart. Step by step, I became involved in the story and becoming apprehensive about what was going to happen to them.
The circle of friendships that they created surrounded themselves is great and brought as much lightness, humor as a touch of drama for this history. Too bad I did not have at the end a glimpse of what happened to some important friends in their lives. Well the writer could do a few more books telling a little more about them.
I loved too much this reading , the cover and the title . super recommend it.

The Butterfly Project has been sitting on my Kindle waiting to be read since February. I kept putting off reading it because I knew I was going to be in for an emotional ride. Emma Scott is an amazing author, but she packs a powerful emotional punch in all of her books. I wasn't sure I was ready for the experience The Butterfly Project was going to give me yet.
I'm so happy I went ahead and started reading it. I loved The Butterfly Project! It was definitely an emotional read, but it immediately drew me and had me invested. I wasn't willing to put the book down. I stayed up way too late reading it because I needed to know what was going to happen to Zelda and Bennett.
If you haven't read Emma Scott's Full Tilt duet, you may not know that Zelda was an employee of Theo's Las Vegas tattoo shop. She's decided to branch off on her own, and take her comic book to shop publishers in New York. The reception of her comic book is not what she had hoped, and she has to figure out how to spend more time in New York to make the revisions she needs to it. Zelda refuses to give up on the one thing that may help her entire family heal. A chance encounter with Beckett gives her the possibility to stay in New York.
Beckett isn't super thrilled to have Zelda around. He's got his own tragedies and regret to deal with. What begins as a partnership, slowly turns into companionship for Beckett. He realizes maybe he's not as alone as he thought. His friendship with Zelda is the only thing heating up his cold and dreary days.
The more entwined their lives get, the more Zelda and Beckett want more from each other. Before they can truly fall, let will have to decide if they can let go of the past and live in the future.
Zelda and Beckett were really amazing characters. Both were living their lives by the day, trying to make it through. They were emotionally stunted by things they wished they could change in their pasts. The sadness and guilt connected them, but their different outlooks on each other's situation brought a strength to their friendship. Zelda knew what Beckett needed and Beckett knew what Zelda needed. Their friendship turning into a romantic relationship was inevitable. They got each other and their chemistry was off the charts. I loved every minute of their romance.
All of the secondary characters were magic. Each brought a little bit of something special to the story. I especially loved Zelda and Beckett's Italian neighbor lady. She cracked me up! I also loved getting a tiny bit of Theo in this story. I had forgotten how much I missed him.
One thing I thought was super cool in this story was the use of the comic book. I liked the glimpses of it I got to see and how the story created helped Zelda and Beckett heal. It was a cool way to connect two characters.
I don't know what else to say about The Butterfly Project except that I loved it. I would highly recommend it to new adult romance readers. The healing and love in this story is amazing. I'm so happy I finally read it!!!
Wow this author has a talent for writing a story that will go straight to your heart! This book is touching and beautiful. You need to read it. I went all in without even reading what the story was about, and I'm glad I did. Zelda and Becket are made for each other. Life's deals people a bad hand of cards but sometimes someone can come in to their lives and change that. That is what these characters did to each other. They were down but they tried getting up again. Just beautiful.
I've wanted to read a book by Emma Scott for quite some time now and I am very glad that I finally did it. The story got me hooked from the very beginning and I fell in love with our two main characters pretty quickly.
Zelda and Beckett were two strong characters, despite being flawed and having a past that haunts them. Their love for each other was beautiful to watch, even though it felt a bit instalove-y to me, so that is one point I did not like. Also, the ending, what with Roy and such, that was too cheesy and perfect for me, too happily ever after.
I also would've have loved to see more of Darla, she was an awesome side character!
This book was beautifully written, though, I also really liked the concept of the graphic novel, called Mother May I?, of Zelda. I wished Mother May I? was a real graphic novel, I would love to read it!
I highly recommend this book, despite it having minor flaws, that's just me, maybe you think about them differently.
❝No matter what happens, even on your worst day, find something to be grateful about. It'll make you feel better.❞
What an emotional ride! 'The Butterfly Project' was the kind of story I love, one filled with angst and swoon-worthy romance, a little laughter and whole lot of heart. This is the first book I've read penned by Emma Scott but it will definitely not be the last.
"The Butterfly Project is a novel that reveals the power of forgiveness, and how even the smallest decisions of the heart can—like the flutter of a butterfly’s wings—create currents that strengthen into gale winds, altering the course of a life forever."
❝I think maybe the way people learn about themselves is to have someone challenge their beliefs, right?❞
Zelda Rossi and Beckett Copeland were two broken beings. Both riddled with guilt and self-hatred, they needed the kind of healing that could only come from unconditional love. A kind of healing that comes from learning to forgive yourself, while helping the other person find forgiveness. They were two perfectly imperfect characters. I cried for them, I laughed and cheered with them.
❝She was something, I never saw coming.❞
I mentioned before about the romance in this book. The slow-burn build of their relationship from friends to romantic interest was stunning. Watching them learn to rely on one another, inspiring. They were dynamic together.
❝Keep talking. I like your voice. It's a searchlight in the dark...so I can always find my way back.❞
The Butterfly Project was a beautiful story about forgiveness, redemption, and finding love.
So glad to have been given the opportunity to review this through Net galley. This new adult romance was very good. The characters were well developed and interesting. Even the side characters had great back stories that added to the overall enjoyment of this book. The romance was predictable but there was enough issues for both main characters to work through alone and together that it was excellent. I adored Beckett and found myself so drawn to his generosity. I loved how well they worked together for good and took time to care about and help others even while going through difficult circumstances themselves. It had a good mix of lightheartedness and seriousness that it was funny and touching both. I just really loved it and will be purchasing my own copy.
This books is beautiful, raw and gritty. The emotions overcome you and engross you into the world Emma has created. This is not only a book about finding love but finding it in your heart to love yourself. The characters have a great depth to them and shattered souls which makes you instantly connect with them. You feel their pain just as they have and it breaks your heart to see the hardships them have overcome. The plot is original and done at a great pace but I must be honest I had to finish this book in one sitting. I get lost in Emma's books and to me that alone proves she is an incredible writer. Emma has this amazing talent where her writing is so descriptive it's as if your are experiencing the book at the same time as the characters. I love her writing style and I can't wait to read more of her amazing books. This was definitely at top read of 2017 for me.
The Butterfly Project by Emma Scott was released in February 2017. While this is the first book that I have read from author Emma Scott, I am very impressed with her work. I really found myself caught up in the main characters, Beckett and Zelda. Emma Scott creates an amazing love story that will have you sucked in from the beginning. She does an outstanding job with the plot line and settings in this book. I really like her style of writing and feel like she does a great job in helping you visualize the scenes/setting. This is a book for the true romantics out there, the ones that can get lost in the love story of others. I feel like this book deals with two people who are broken inside. They really feel alone and not sure of their lives. Then on a chance encounter they meet. This book gives you hope for the underdog and you want to see them rise above all of life’s pitfalls. This book has so much more then just the romance, there is friendships and how guilt can make a person change. I found this book an overall great read.

"When you find something that shines against all that dirt and darkness, you gravitate toward it."
Zelda Rossi was a graphic novel artist. Art was her life; she had one big chance to change her life path with a company in New York City. Leaving everything behind, she decided to pursue her dream; it wasn't just a dream to her it was personal she wanted her comic story to be known to be something she could share with the world. When she meets a stranger she feels like it was sign to not give up and keep going.
Beckett Copeland was paying for something he did when he was young and immature. A big mistake that now has cost him his freedom. His life now is a struggle; he lives with guilt every day because he knows it will be a long time before he could truly be free. When he meets Zelda he feels connected to her in every way possible but his situation makes him frustrated and does not allow himself to freely enjoy her company as much as he wish to because he don't want to stop her from reaching her dreams.
"Maybe Zelda was changing my destiny. Already she was an artistic partner-something I never saw coming. I gazed at her beneath a garland of twinkling lights. She was something I never saw coming."
This story was unique; I have not read anything quite like it before. I enjoyed it from beginning to end. I fell in love with these two main characters and the story itself right from the start. When Beckett let Zelda in and decides to give love a try it was magic. This two were just perfect for each other. Zelda asks Beckett to help her with her dream project. At first he thought it was pretty cool but when Zelda realizes that his contribution to her story was EPIC and exactly what the story was missing; she couldn't deny that her dream was now both of their and there was no way she will not give him credit for it. Beckett had only agreed to help because he knew deep inside that this was so important to her and somehow he figured the only way to help her was thru her own story.
"Maybe I can help her move past the rage and pain to something else. Some peace. I set my fingertip by hers, in the empty space above Ryder. "He tells her, "There's another way."
I was fascinated with the idea of the comic book and how cool Beckett and Zelda work together with it. I was mesmerized by it all. I truly enjoyed all the side characters on this story and the message this book delivered. This book wasn't just a typical love story; it was so much more. This story will be appealing to readers looking for a book about forgiveness; about second chances and about forgiveness and strength.
I have no words...I truly did not want this novel to end I wasn't ready to close the book and leave the characters behind.
Emma Scott never fails to give her readers an outstanding read and the butterfly project is in my 2017 top 10 I loved it and I have a hunch that I'm most definitely going to read it again.
Thankyou so much to the publisher and netgalley for the opportunity to review this and thankyou emma Scott for being an amazing and remarkable author.
