Bartelby is a very long dog (make that a very, very, very long dog) who hangs out in a bookstore with his friends. On the occasion when Bartelby goes outside to have a stroll and play, his very long bottom causes quite the mess. When he realizes his bottom isn’t quite normal, he gets sad. With the help of his friends, Bartebly learns to understand that not everybody (or dog) is perfect and our flaws make us uniquely special.
This was a cute story with absolutely darling illustrations. A perfect choice for bedtime story reading time that is not only entertaining, but teaches a lesson. Younger children will surely love this story.
This is a cute story about Bartelby, a very very very long and very loveable dog who lives in a bookstore. He looks forward to his walks with his special friends. Unbeknownst to him, his tail end wreaks havoc while his front end is getting happily petted. He feels so bad when he finds out what is happening that he hides out. That is, until his friends come up with a way to fix Bartelby's problem.
I think this is a sweet story that youngsters will fall in love with. I can see it being a bedtime (and other times) story favorite. The artwork is really appealing too, especially Bartelby's sweet face. I think this may have to join my grandchildren's home library.
I was given an ARC from Sourcebooks Jabberwocky via Netgalley for my thoughts on this book.
A very cute book about a dog that lives in a bookstore and loves to go out with his friends on adventures but has lots of problems because he is a very very very long dog. I will not give more away as to spoil it. Very fun book to read. I would recommend to everyone.
Bartelby is a lovable dog, especially since he lives in a bookstore. He clearly has many friends and the most charming aspect of this book is the problem-solving his friends do to help him after he has caused one to many calamities on his morning walk. All he needed was help in keeping track of that darn bottom. It is so far away!
I think kids will love to laugh as they read this book. The illustrations are funny and the author used such scrumptious phrases as blundering backside, bungling behind, and reckless rear. Kids will love it!
While I think the comedic instances of Bartleby's daily walks will be entertaining to small kids, I think the book was a bit overwhelming in it's artistry, which seemed more sketchy than I as a reader to small kids usually enjoy. I do see the value in it at times though as it accurately explains Bartleby's calamities. The resolution seemed a bit hurried but for kids who aren't seeking a super in depth explanation, it will work fine. Overall, just not the book for me and my kiddos.
This book was provided to me via NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.
Bartelby is a super long sausage dog. He is kind and friendly and lives in a bookstore. But he has a problem when he leaves the bookstore. His front end is safe and kind and considerate, but his back end frequently gets into trouble. After one exceptionally horrid mishap, Bartelby decides to never leave his bookstore again, but his friends come up with a different solution.
Aww, Bartelby is a sweety. But admittedly a very accident-prone sweety because of his length. He also has some very loving friends. Obviously, this is a great pick for dog lovers. The plot also provides a good mind experiment for kids. What kind of trouble might they get in if they had a body so long? How would they solve such a problem? And do they think that Bartelby will have more adventures? I can see many kids eager for more from this unforgettable sausage dog.

Bartelby is a charming sausage dog with a long problem – his front end does not communicate so well with his rear end! One day chaos ensues after he loses track of his tail. Bartelby is left with quite the conundrum – how can he manage his public appearances with such a remote rump? Bartelby stretches through pages of kid-friendly illustrations loaded with details to identify. Just a hint of tail-tinged humor will tickle readers. Bartelby’s tale is sure to charm!
Truth be told, I think I'm Bartleby! A dog that likes books, loves walking and always seems to be chasing his tail end bringing clumsiness wherever he goes. Yup, sounds like me. I think this little gem is delightful for adults to enjoy with their kids and a little bit of naughtiness that kids can giggle at. What child doesn't like to talk about bums and bottoms?! Throw in a funnily shaped dog and it's a cute little read that kids will enjoy over and over.
The illustrations are beautiful and I love that there's so much happening in them that allows the child to take part in the storytelling by describing what they see and adding their own little bit of imagination to the story. Perfect for first readers.
Very simple and appropriate for the age range. Illustrations compliment the text allowing kids to stay visually engaged through its entirety. I did this as a read aloud with my littles and they squealed in delight every time Bartleby's rear caused chaos.
Bartelby is very lucky as he lives in a bookstore and have such lovely friends that always love to spend time with him <3
I'm a sucker for dog books. They have always been my favorite types of stories ever since I first read Poky Little Puppy as a small child.
It's a unique storyline that would appeal to young readers through elementary age. The illustrations are adorable and Bartleby the dog is absolutely precious. With lovable characters and amazing artwork, I would love to see this become a series. These whimsical illustrations are eye-catching and timeless. My daughter and I enjoyed reading about Bartleby's escapades. I love to read more!
This adorable storyline teaches children about acceptance, thinking out of the box and friendship.
I love the solution the children came up with, but I felt it should have been written out instead. It was a little confusing to understand what was going on, trying to explain it was somewhat difficult. I don't think she really cared for the solution either. It was still adorable nonetheless.
I highly recommend this book for young children. It's a wonderful read-aloud book that's funny and engaging.
I so wanted to love this book. I figured I could preview it and then order a copy for my granddaughters. Unfortunately, I really disliked The Very Very Very Long Dog. The story idea has promise, but the illustrations are awful, in my opinion. They definitely distract from the story rather than add to the reader's enjoyment. I won't be purchasing this book.
Well I loved the idea of this, with an exceedingly pleasant and exceedingly long dog that can't control his rear end and causes accidents as a result, but hated the artwork. Only the dog comes out of it looking nice - the upsets are just as clumsily handled as the dog's bum, and some details I can stare at and stare at and not work out what the heck they're supposed to be. Fine little tale for little readers, but just awful execution from the artist.
This is cute, but not something I would like to reread again and again, which is always the mark of a good picture book, or at least ones that parents don't throw across the room, hoping to never have to read again.
Sorry, but this is a bit forgettable. I would suggest the Hungry Caterpillar as an example of a good books that builds on itself, the way this one attempts to do.
Perhaps kids that have wiener dogs will love this. I was underwhelmed. Cute drawings, which allows it to go to three stars.
Thanks to Netgalley for making this book available for an honest review.
Bartleby is a sweet, lovable dachsund who resides in a bookstore. He is beloved and very happy but., alas, has a problem. He has the longest bottom and, inadvertently, that bottom causes colossal unfortunate mishaps. He goes into seclusion when he causes one too many accidents. His friends value their relationship and come up with a solution.
My younger students are bound to fall in love with Bartleby. They will also be in hysterics when they realize Bartleby's problem. Sure to be a winner!
Kids love dogs and giggling at bathroom humor, so a dog who can't really control where his behind goes is a sure winner. Kids will also appreciate the way that it appears that kids solve the problem (their ages aren't really obvious, but they seem kid-like) and educators/librarians will enjoy that they use books to find their solution. A quick, short read that will go over well in groups or one-on-one.
Oh, Bartelby indeed! This book is adorable. It is about an exceptionally long dachshund named Bartelby, who gets into trouble when he's out and about because he is so long that his front end doesn't know what his back end is up to! Generous use of the word "bottom" is sure to induce giggle after giggle in young readers.
I received a copy from the publisher through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
This is a sweet picture book about a long sausage dog called Bartelby whose long body gets him into strife. A short read, but charming.
This delightful tale, with adorable Bartelby, a long, long, long dachshund, will be a hit with kids for sure. He's lucky enough to live in an old bookstore surrounded by his most favourite things... his yummy bowl of food, his favourite books to read and friends who love him dearly. Each morning his devoted friends come and take him out for a walk around town.
Unbeknowsnt to Bartelby his backside is causing major havoc and chaos wherever he goes. On his walk he causes a car crash, trips people, and walks through a construction worker's wet cement sidewalk just to name a few. Oh my! Bartelby growls vehemently and wants to go after that troublemaker whose causing all that destruction and mayhem. He will get to the bottom of it. Then Bartley discovers the culprit is no other than....HIMSELF!!!! How can this be?
Humiliated and embarassed, knowing now he has no control over his backend he runs back to the bookstore and vows never to leave there again. He goes into isolation and won't budge.
His good friends who love him dearly are very upset that he is so sad and they browse through every book in the bookstore and finally.... EUREKA!!!! they come up with a solution to his problem. Yes, it's spot on perfect for Bartelby.
The illustrations are whimsical and packed full of action and fun. The story is about helping out a friend in need, acceptance of self and is a story with heart. I highly recommend this book.
