I like big bottoms and I can not lie. Okay in this case it’s long bottoms. Bartleby the dog is a long dog. How long, so long he can not fit on one page. And his long rear end is always getting him into trouble. He can cause car crashes, trip hazards, etc. While living a life in a bookstore my sound serene, everyone needs to get out every once in awhile and it will be up to Bartleby’s friends to help him become less of a problem. Fun illustrations complement this fun story.
The Very Very Very Long Dog by Julia Patton is a unique picture book about Bartelby - a sausage dog that lives in a bookstore. His life is happy until he discovers that his own bottom is causing havoc whenever he goes out. His friends come to the rescue with a special gift that solves the problem. Young readers will enjoy saying "Oh, Bartelby!" as each catastrophe occurs. Calm pastel colors with splashes of brightness bring the pages to life.
A lifelong dachshund lover I knew I had to read this book when I saw it. I was not disappointed. Bartleby is an extremely long wiener dog whose tail end causes all sorts of trouble. Thankfully, he has good friends to help him out. Very sweet and creative story with fun illustrations.
Children will fall in love with Bartelby and all of the talk of "bottoms". Julia Patton has crafted a sweet, doggy tale that will attract kids with silly dog antics and an emotional connection to Bartelby. Care, concern, and chaos - it's all there in The Very Very Very Long Dog.
Bartelby is a LONG sausage dog. Because he's so long, he doesn't know the chaos his rear end causes. When he finally realizes, he decides he never wants to leave his home at the bookstore again. Thankfully, Bartelby has some good friends that will help him find a solution and get him out experiencing life again.
This is a good title for young children as a read aloud. It can be used to talk about friendship and being aware of the effects you have on others.
This is a sweet read. Bartelby lives in a bookstore and he has good friends. They take him
on walks but this becomes problematic as Bartelby is a long dog who isn't sure where his
bottom is. His friends problem solve and come up with the perfect solution.

my daughters and I have a "very long dog" so we were really excited about reading this book. My girls loved the characters and how they helped the very long dog with her problem. And I loved how the author pointed out how hey loved her even if she was always causing accidents. The illustrations were perfect for the story. Thanks for the great read!
What a delightful children's tale! What a fortunate dog is Bartleby, to live in a bookstore, to be able to read his favorite books at every breakfast and every supper, and to be able to go on long walks in the city. How blessed is he with special friends who care! He especially needs them, as Bartleby is so very, very, very, lengthy that he constantly loses track of his hind end, and causes chaos and conflict wherever he goes! Thankfully his friends persevere, reading every book in the bookstore till they can decide how best to help.
Slated for age 4 and up, but I believe younger children will enjoy as well.
The Very Very Very Long Dog by Julia Patton is a cute book about a dog's adventures through town. Bartleby is a long, long, long dog who causes problems wherever he goes because he does not know where his hind end is. His friends try to calm everyone down and fix his problems but it can't always be done. His friends do not want to see him sadly staying in the bookstore, so they come up with a solution to the problem. The story is funny and light-hearted. I love the vocabulary used in this book. The author does not talk down to the reader and I can see some discussions about the meaning of some of the words taking place. Definitely a great vocabulary builder. The illustrations are cute and kids will love this dog, especially when he ends up attacking himself in the rear end. This story teaches the reader/listener to accept everyone no matter their differences as well as embracing your own differences.
This is a fun silly book about a dog with a long behind that causes a lot of mayhem.
I was instantly enamored by the cover of this book, the Very Very Very Long Dog was so endearing I know I was going to love it. Turning those first few pages my instincts were rewarded with instant humor and a dog that wears glasses while reading books. He is so long he doesn’t fit on any of the pages, and Bartelby is never quite sure where his bottom is or what sort of chaos it causes on his morning walk.
The illustrations are gorgeous, interactive, funny and just plain awesome and have been drawn by the very creative Julia Patton. If this book had come without words the pictures would easily still tell a story and keep me equally engaged. The pictures celebrate diversity by characters coming from a variety of cultures, characters young and old, and some wearing glasses to clearly see and well…Bartelby, and his very long and out of control bottom.
This book would be a fun read for a story time group and would easily encourage laughter and engagement. It is one that I would add to my Storytime kit and I know it would quickly become a favourite.
A cute, adorable, fun read about a dog who doesn't realize the destruction his rear end causes.
This was a very cute book. It is about a very very very long dog who lives in a bookstore. But when his friends take him for a walk he looses track of his back side and causes mayhem. It had nice illistrations and is a good book for little kids. I recieved a free copy of this book from Net Galley in exchange for a review.
Silly book about a dog that couldn't keep track of his tail and it began causing all sorts of issues.

Bartleby lives in a bookstore and has many friends. The friendly dog makes everyone smile when he goes out with his friends; however, he often has no idea what his back portion is doing since he is so long. His friends usually patch things up when he causes many problems, but one day, he makes a very big mess, and even ends up attacking his own bottom. Thank goodness his friends figure out a solution to the problem so that Bartleby doesn't have to remain in the bookstore.
I enjoyed how loyal this dog's friends remain to him and how they work to come up with a solution to his problem. The illustrations are unique. The book touches on being yourself and embracing your uniqueness.
I give this book 4.5/5 stars.

A very cute story about a sausage dog named Bartelby who is so long, he has no idea about the troubles his bottom half cause. The simple and funny storyline make it a perfect book to read to a younger audience. my only issue was that some of the words, I felt, were a bit "big" for a children's book. For example: "whilst" and "concocted". Bartelby is so adorable and will be easily loved by everyone who reads this book
I am very biased when it comes to the main character. I have a chiweenie, which is very much like Bartelby. I also have a corgi/Aussie mix, which is like a bigger version of him. So seeing my two dogs as the main character in a book really got me excited to read it. I have done work as a party clown and kids love the odd shaped dog balloon animals I make, so I think the book will grab some of their attention just with that.
The language felt like a bit much for the book. I was really into it at first because the language didn't talk down to the kids and that will help their vocabularies grow. I had an issue once the word "whilst" was used. It really threw me off and took me out of the book. If it was only that once, then I probably would have forgotten it by now. The author used it again. I don't understand that word choice at all. There are very few words in a picture book so the selection is paramount. The use of "whilst" made me feel like the book was trying to hard, which made me sad.
The art was perfect. Bartelby always stood out because of the way his fur was drawn, so it was easy to keep in track of where his butt is. I can appreciate the characters were so varied and drawn so perfectly.
The only thing I wish had happened was there was more exploration into how Bartelby's friends tried to get him to go outside again. I think it could have been really cute and goofy if some of their failed attempts were shown. It would have shown that friends are worth the effort, which would have been another great message for the book.
There is a lot to enjoy in this cute picture book. The illustrations are great and have a lot of texture—especially the dog’s fur. The character design is great too. I love the repetition in the text and lends itself to be read aloud. My parents have a whole pack of dachshunds, and Bartelby (also great name) reminds me a lot of their dogs.
