This is a e-arc from NetGalley. It is my honest opinion. Anything Roshani Chokshi writes is incredible.
Will no longer be reading or reviewing this book due to lack of interest in the title, and the fact that the title has been archived.
Death and Night by Roshani Chokshi is a great little insight to The Star-Touched Queen. I have to say that I actually enjoyed Death and Night way more than The Star-Touched Queen. It was great getting to know Maya and Amar better. Their story is so sweet and interesting. Chokshi writes very beautifully in this novella.
I can't get over just how poetic Chokshi writes. I love how her writing is gauzy and dream like and I am thrilled for another beautiful addition to a series that i'm so in love with. Getting this background to fill in the blanks was wonderful and if you're a fan of the series you need to pick up Death and Night!
This novella was a bittersweet exploration of Maya and Amar's complex love story, adding depth to their timeless bonds, drawing readers in to be further invested in the series.
This is a short prequel to the beautiful Star-Touched Queen story. Their sweet courtship before their doom that led to the next novel.
This was a very short read, and I really wanted this to be longer. I thought it was very romantic. Amat and Maya has a very sweet love story. This prequel gave us much more background into the relationship between Amar and Maya. I really think that this should have been a novel instead for this was a very rich story.
An exciting addition to this diverse and action-packed young adult series. It opened up further details of the world and helped to round some characters and home some facts from the original trilogy.
I loved getting a little glimpse into Maya and Amar's life BEFORE The Star-Touched Queen takes place. I felt like this novella had more in common with A Crown of Wishes than The Star-Touched Queen, probably because it takes place entirely in the otherworld, and has that mystical vibe I so enjoyed in ACOW. Anyway, this was a fabulous novella that really added depth to TSTQ universe!
I was a bit leery about this novella. On the one hand, The Star-Touched Queen just wasn't working for me. On the other, I loved A Crown of Wishes. Unfortunately, Death and Night fell closer to the former as it told the tale of Amar and Maya before the events of TSTQ when it was only Death and Night.
Much like the first in the series, the writing is very descriptive and beautiful but suffered from the same fate where it was almost too much. I mean, it's gorgeous, it really is, but even in a shorter story it felt drawn out and I was leaning against reading more.
I did enjoy the characters. Maya wasn't a favorite of mine in TSTQ but I liked that her character is fleshed out more here, along with Amar's. It expanded on the story of the first book so if that's something you're looking for, you'll probably really enjoy this novella.
I guess I was just expecting more information? There's a lot of vagueness and parts of the world in TSTQ that was never really answered and I thought that maybe a prequel novella would provide more insight on that but it really didn't. The story focuses on the romance which isn't necessarily a bad thing but not what I was looking for going into this novella. Once more there were aspects of the world and story that went unexplained and that's just how it worked.
I'll say that I did enjoy the novella more than TSTQ but I think that had to do with the length more than anything, which contained the story in a shorter time. It was alright and fans of the series are sure to love it. I'm just in that in-between place.
I need to firstly state that Roshani's writing is impossibly beautiful. I read Star-Touched Queen last year, and though I really liked it, it wasn't until Crown of Wishes that I realised, hang on, this woman is amazing.
I found it immensely rewarding reading this short story, and having this extra bit of something to relate to Maya and Amar. And if anything, it kind of makes me want to read Star-Touched Queen again...
This novella is so stunningly written, the words weave themselves off the page and into my soul!
This is fascinating little novella that adds significant extra depth to the mythos of the two main books in the series. It's lovely to experience how the Maya and Amar met and fell in love which also gives us an extra glimpse into the characters and their world.
Roshani Chokshi has a lovely style of writing and the world-building is clear and concise and oh so easy to imagine. As novellas go this is a great one and is a brilliant accompaniment to the rest of The Star-Touched Queen series (which are outstanding and imaginative pieces of work, and well worth reading in my opinion!)
Thank you, to Netgalley and the publisher for sending me a digital ARC of “Death and Night” by Roshani Chokshi. I was not terribly surprised that I loved this short story. I adore “The Star-Touched Queen” by Roshani Chokshi and its companion novel. Roshani’s writing is lyrical and full of such amazing prose that is uncommon these days. In “Death and Night” there is more background about the love story that I became enraptured with in the first novel in this series. Roshani Chokshi’s writing style and plots are marvelous and deserve great praise.
A fantastic addition to the Star-Touched Queen. It answers questions and gives context and background to characters that have become beloved. Just like her other work, it's beautifully written and wonderful to read.
Fantastic short story that really expanded on the world of Star Touched Queen. Roshani Chokshi has such a beautiful way of writing that draws you in and makes you feel like you're in that world with the characters! I loved getting to dive back into both the world and the writing and this was such a quick, enjoyable read.
Chokshi does an excellent job showing the origin story of Death and Night's ill-fated love, bringing depth and history to her novels. Her writing is lyrical and lovely, and visions of the Otherworld are easily created in the mind's eye.
This was the part I had been waiting for in Star Touched Queen! I wanted the backstory of the first time they met/fell in love. (And it was as great as I thought it would be.)
For a fan of both The Star-Touched Queen (my review) and A Crown of Wishes (my review), this novella was such a treat! I remember really enjoying A Crown of Wishes, while also wishing that I could spend more time with two of the characters from the first book (and yes I’m purposely being vague so as not to spoil anything for those who have not yet read the other books!). Well, even though I never directly made a request to the author, Roshani Chokshi, she granted my wish anyway!
Although I would have enjoyed an “after” story quite a bit, the “before” story was quite awesome to read about too. Chokshi’s writing was just as magical as in her other books, and although we knew bits and pieces of this story from the previous books, there was still new information to absorb. This story was shorter compared to the other two books (and it was meant to be), but despite this, it was quite descriptive, and Chokshi did not fail in weaving yet another hypnotizing story for us.
I really enjoyed reading this novella, and will likely re-read it when I re-read the entire series. I also won’t be greedy by requesting more about these characters and world, but would like to say that I would not be opposed to Chokshi writing more novels or novellas about it all if she feels inspired! I highly recommend this novella for those who enjoyed The Star-Touched Queen and A Crown of Wishes! And for those of you who have read none of these books before, I would recommend reading this novella last, since there may be spoilers for the first book within Death and Night.

I loved both The Star Touched Queen and Crown of Wishes, and this novella is a very sweet look at Maya and the Dhama Raj's story pre the events in STQ. I love the way that Death goes in to this attempted courtship of Night and basically ballses it all up. Very funny and very cute. Of course if you've read STQ then you know how this will end but this novella is still well worth a read. Perfect for a single sitting read on a lazy Sunday afternoon.
Highly recommend.
