This was a great read, and I like how older works are being republished for new readers! I think the pages could have been scanned a little better because some pages were hard to read on my kindle. But the info was great.

(I received an ARC from the NETGALLEY)

(Review Not on Blog)

In 1895, Mrs. de Salis wrote these guide books on how to grow, harvest and cook with fruits and vegetables . In 2017, I am reviewing Harriet A. de Salis' book for NetGalley. First of all, I love that this book is still (or reprinted) in print over a hundred years later. That is the kind of book that instills trust when one is new to gardening. With the way the weather has been this year I have not really been motivated to go outside, let alone spend time gardening. SO I have had a chance to read these guides and make notes. While the cover is modern and pretty, the text inside the books (ebook) are definitely old print. At times I did have to squint and guess to read it. Still the tips do seem worth the eye strain IF/WHEN I get to garden and it does well, lol.

This is a lovely little book, originally printed in 1895 and brings back the varieties and methods of looking after fruit trees in days of old. I would not recommend some of them, but others are still relevant. There are recipes for some lovely and simple ways of using the fruit. It is a lovely walk down memory lane.

I received a free electronic copy of this reprint of hints, tips and recipes for growing and preserving fruits from Netgalley and Dover Publications, Inc in exchange for an honest review. Thank you all, for sharing your hard work with me.

Gardening a la Mode: Fruits was first published by Longmans, Green and Co, London and New York in 1895. I found the gardening tips and recipes in this small guide extremely useful. Several of the tips for raising fruits for the table have already been incorporated in my small orchard. Many of the recipes take me back to the canning marathons with my Mom, Grandmother, and many Aunts and cousins in the 1950's, processes I had thought lost in the gleam of Modern Times.

Though the print on this e-book is very difficult to read, I will order a hard copy or three from Amazon, to share with my younger sisters. Thank you, for bringing back those memories - and recipes!
