Another good summer beach read from Hildebrand, this novel alternates between the usual setting of Nantucket, with Martha's Vineyard. Tabitha and Harper are identical twins, separated when their parents divorced and decided Tabitha would stay with her uptight, snobby mother, Eleanor, while Harper stayed with her down to earth father, Billy. Completely different personalities, they stopped talking for years but are reunited at their father's death. Tabitha's daughter, Ainsley, adds to the dysfunction of this family, as each twin has a story that unfolds.
My summer is ready to begin. Always love Elin Hilderbrand's books to start my summer and this one did not disappoint! She has done it again!i don't know how she does it every year, but the stories just keep getting better and better. This could be my favorite!
Identical twin sisters Tabitha and Harper and Tabitha’s sixteen-year-old daughter are the primary story tellers of this novel. None of them are particularly likeable at the beginning. Tabitha is upright and not good at expressing her feelings; Harper is laid back but doesn’t have a real career and is having an affair with a married man; and Ainsley is a spoiled brat. The changes in their circumstances transform all of them over the course of the book—for the better.
Tabitha and Harper haven’t really spoken for fourteen years, since they were twenty-five when tragedy struck. Even before that, the twins, who had once been inseparable, started growing apart when their parents divorced and Harper moved to Martha’s Vineyard with her father and Tabitha went with her mother to Nantucket. They were seventeen-years-old when their parents divorced, so that can’t account for why Tabitha and Harper are so different. Had they been thirteen or younger, I would understand why Tabitha is so concerned with appearances—their mother is a fashion designer with a boutique selling expensive outfits to the wealthy. Their father, however, lets his home fall into disrepair and, like her father, Harper just throws clothes on without concern for what she looks like as long as she’s comfortable. With her string of waitressing and delivery jobs, she doesn’t need to look stylish.
When their father dies (at the beginning of the book), the sisters are forced to talk, especially when new events call for them to essentially switch places. I liked reading about the characters’ transformations.
I received this arc from Netgalley for an honest review. I look forward to Elin Hilderbrands new book every year and this did not disappoint. The characters were strong as was the storyline. The story did wrap up kind of quickly but it was still a good story. I liked the beginning when both islands were described and what one thought of the other.
I've read every single story and book that Elin Hilderbrand has ever published. I've also re-read many of her books and I look forward to each one; she now has a winter series that she publishes in the late fall in addition to the book she writes every summer but, still, her books are the start of summer for me. That being said, her last few books have been hit or miss for me. A few I've loved (The Matchmaker , The Rumor) but more often her last few books have been just ok for me (Beautiful Day (my only DNF from her), Summerland and Here's to Us). So I was anxious but also apprehensive to dive into her latest, The Identicals. Well I needn't have worried because it was wonderful! It gave me all those same feelings that her early books did and reminded me why I fell in love with her books in the first lace. This book is about identical twin sisters that are are so different as well as Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard - two islands that look alike but couldn't be farther apart in their personalities. I loved the juxtaposition and devoured this book in one day. I know I will re-read this one and it also encouraged me to re-read a few of my other EH favorites after I finished it, just to keep those feelings going!
The Identicals comes out next month on June 13, 2017, and you can purchase HERE. I really loved this one and I am happy to report that Elin Hilderbrand is back!! I definitely recommend you put this on your summer reading list.
Like thousands of other erudite, discerning people, you've decided to spend your summer vacation on an island off the coast of Massachusetts. You want postcard beaches. You want to swim, sail, and surf in the Yankee-blue waters. You want to eat clam chowder and lobster rolls, and you want those dishes served to you by someone who calls them chowdah and lobstah. You want to ride in a Jeep with the op down, your golden retriever, named Charles Emerson Winchester III, riding shotgun. You want to live the dream. You want an American summer.
Pretty delightful. I'd say Hilderbrand is at the top of my beach reads list right now. Her books are breezy and fun, and full of interesting secondary characters. There's nothing serious or heavy about any of them, and this book just continues that trend. Fun, breezy and light as air.
Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for the digital ARC!
The Identicals was an excellent book, and Elin Hilderbrand did not disappoint. It was a little slow in the beginning because a lot of factual and geographical information was given. Once, the actual story started, the characters captured my attention, and I kept wanting to read the story to learn the outcome. This would be a great beach read- Easy, fun, and engrossing.
The Identicals by Elin Hilderbrand is a women's fiction novel based on the lives of two identical twin sisters who haven't spoken to each another in over fourteen years but are forced to reconnect when the unthinkable happens. Years earlier, when the girls were seventeen, their parents made a decision that would change their lives forever and their relationship inextricably.
This novel is told from the perspectives of the twins, Harper and Tabitha, and Tabitha's daughter Ainsley.
Harper seems like a desperate and lost soul constantly making the wrong choice with men and the wrong decisions in life. She's flailing through life with no purpose, or so it seems...
Tabitha is the complete opposite of Harper; she is self-assured and hoighty-toighty. She uses her sister's life-choices as a measuring stick or moral compass in which to gage her own decisions against, making sure to do one better and not something "Harper would do."
Ainsley, Tabitha's teenage daughter, is a spoiled, egocentric brat who has no boundaries and no respect for those around her.
I've read all of Elin Hilderbrand's novels and thoroughly enjoyed this particular story. My favourite type of narrative is when the author tells the story through the eyes of all characters -- so telling! I found my jaw drop on more than one occasion reading this novel; it has a few surprises. It would make an excellent beach read where you could delve right in undisturbed and just enjoy. I rate it 4.5 out of 5 stars.
Thank you NetGalley and Little, Brown and Company for providing a copy of this novel in exchange for a fair review. https://moesbookblog.wordpress.com/

I love Elin Hilderbrands books - some more than others, but this one certainly didn't let me down. Who know knew (I didn't) there was such a rivalry between Nantucket and Marthas' Vineyard? I found the history to be fascinating, the romance didn't hurt either. I felt like I had been on coast, without ever leaving the midwest. Fund book.
Drama between twins split between Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket .Interesting family dynamics.
This is another strong offering from Elin Hilderbrand, who has made such a well-known name for herself writing "beach reads," the quality of which is a notch above many other vacation novels. Put simply, Hilderbrand's writing is what sets her apart. The Identicals is no exception - we have fascinating characters, an intriguing (if slightly predictable) plot, and a familiar and gorgeous island setting. I liked the idea of the two islands (Nantucket and Marth'a's Vineyard) as twins mirroring the characters of Harper and Tabitha, who are twins. After a somewhat slow(ish) start, the story really picks up. Fans of Hilderbrand's other works will not be disappointed.
The Identicals is Elin Hilderbrand's newest summer read. This story follows identical twins, Harper and Tabitha, who have spent their lives fighting with each other, They live on two different islands, Harper is on Martha's Vineyard while Tabitha resides on Nantucket. Tabitha has a rebellious teenage daughter who begins to slowly form a relationship with her estranged aunt. The twins lose their father and must deal with the settling of his estate as well as other hurdles thrown into their paths over the course of the summer. The sisters may appear as opposite from each other as they can possibly be but time will tell if they can ever begin to love and respect each other. Read and enjoy!
Identical twin sisters, Harper & Tabitha, are torn apart when their parents divorced. One parent takes one to live on Martha's Vineyard. The other girl is to live with another parent on Nantucket.
After their father's death, can the girls be reunited after many years of not speaking? With a rebellious teenager, Tabitha is struggling on Nantucket managing her mother's clothing store. Harper is on Martha's Vineyard making horrible choices yet again. With a chance to spend a couple weeks on the different islands, both women blossom with second chances. But can these couple weeks finally get the twins to speak and work out their issues?
Once again I enjoyed Elin Hilderbrand's book! She really touches on family dynamics. I enjoyed the twin's stories. I really enjoyed the dynamics on Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard's. I love her books. Always a great escape!
I received this from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. I love Elin Hildebrand! She never lets me down. I love the backdrop of both Islands. Tabitha and Harper were wonderful to get to know. Ainsley stole my heart. She just needed to feel loved. This is a great read. Beach time, cozy chair of reading room. You will have the perfect escape in this book.
This was absolutely fantastic. Elin is back!!!! I only wish this could have been even longer (and it was pretty long!)
I look forward to Elin Hilderbrand's books and she never disappoints. She brings us Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket in her unique voice and always has me feeling I am right where I need to be. Every time I think she's at the top of her game, she lifts the bar a little higher. I loved The Identicals.
I am a great fan of Elin Hilderbrand, I've read all of her books and enjoyed them all.; THE IDENTICALS is a true gem. The book is named for the 2 main characters, identical twins, Tabitha and Harper. They live on Nantucket (site of most Hilderbrand novels) and Martha's Vineyard, having been estranged for years.
The catalyst is the death of their father, as well as the serious issues faced by Tabitha's teen aged daughter Ainsley. Somehow, the sisters despite the confusion and tough issues are able to find very happy endings., BTW, this summer be prepared for a baby boom in all the summer reads and this is no exception. Though unexpected, it is part of the redemption and ultimate joys of this lovely book.
I was totally engaged by the book, and loved my tours of Nantucket and the Vineyard. Hilderbrand is able to take us to the beach, as we grab her books for fabulous summer fun.

Thank you to NetGalley.com and the Publisher for providing me with an advanced-reader copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion.
Finally – a Nantucket book from Elin Hilderbrand that’s not all about Nantucket! What a delight to go off island, even if it is only to the next one over. Still – it’s a cute premise even if it is a little predictable in places but a quick beach read that is a delight to read.
What I loved: I think Ainsley was my favorite character since I have a moody teen as well and the insight I received just from the book will save a lifetime of therapy costs for us. I admit, I’ve forgotten what it was like to be a teen and its so different now from when I was that age so I appreciate the easy “Why Your Teen Is An Ass” parenting manual as a gift with purchase with the book.
What I didn’t love: While I love a point of view from a dog, I would have liked to know how everyone else if the story made out – not just his owner’s side of things. It just didn’t seem final. Maybe this incomplete tale is heading towards a sequel – and that would be okay.
What I learned: Too many to count – be careful what you wish for, the grass is never greener next door, and stop holding onto stupid grudges.
Overall Grade: B+
