After Green Lanterns, Vol. 1: Rage Planet comes Green Lanterns, Vol. 2: The Phantom Lantern, and I have to admit I was very excited for this. I haven’t read that many comics involving the Green Lanterns yet, but I can say the comics are wayyy better than that one movie with Ryan Reynolds (although I love him and everything he does, but that movie was truly unbearable).

In this story, we see Simon and Jessica trying to keep the Guardian of the Universe and the Phantom Ring safe, which is no easy task. Especially since the Guardian doesn’t want to be kept safe by those two (which is not that surprising). Simon and Jessica need to try to find a way to work together as a team, while Jessica still battles with her anxiety and Simon with his own stuff as well. The Phantom Ring brings a lot of temptation with it though, because its power can be wielded by anyone, the ring doesn’t have to choose you, as the Green Lantern ring does. Queue bad guy/self-righteous white man who thinks he deserves the ring more than anyone else because he’s been working for this his entire life to “become a hero” and "safe the world". Oh, the irony.

I feel like we’ve learnt by now that every time a character deems themselves worthy of power and want to crown themselves a hero because they ”deserve it and worked so hard for it”, we just know that character is going to transform into a bad guy. And so it happens. He steals the ring and Jessica and Simon need to try and get it back. Meanwhile the Guardian of the Universe fights his own old enemy, Volthoom, who I’m thinking we will see even more of in the next volume and who has his own evil revenge planned.

In the end, this story has a great message to all readers, young and old. Jessica finally understands why the ring picked her (as previously mentioned, to become a Green Lantern the ring has to choose you, how it does it, we don’t really know or understand yet) and starts to believe in herself and manages to form her own constructs (that's what Green Lanterns use the ring for...). This is a great way to show people how to believe in themselves and it’s inspiring to see a character who’s been struggling with anxiety for so long, finally find a way to over come it. Simon on the other hand is still a bit of a mystery, and his temptation towards the Power Ring is also kind of a weird flex and I’m sure there’s more in store for us with him.

All in all, a great read! I give this 4 stars!

I'm really growing to like the duo of Baz and Jessica - especially how Jessica's anxiety is portrayed and how she's working to overcome it.

There's significant appeal to the earthbound Green Lantern heroes vs. villain story in Sam Humphries' Rebirth Green Lanterns Vol. 2: The Phantom Lantern and the Phantom Lantern is indeed a viable new antagonist for the Green Lantern mythos. Humphries' Phantom Lantern Frank Laminski fits in the mold of classic Green Lantern villains, a milquetoast guy and Lantern fanatic (shades there of both Black Hand and Hector Hammond) who's granted great power and uses it for evil. The issue-long Laminski profile prologue (with art by Robson Rocha) is great, both detailing Laminski and also taking a weird walk through the new Rebirth Green Lantern history. The absolute best sequence of this entire book is where Green Lanterns Simon Baz and Jessica Cruz confront Laminski amidst a media interview, and Laminski is able to profess himself as a real Green Lantern because the general public has no real understanding of how the Green Lantern Corps works. Simon and Jessica nearly get in some PR danger, and it makes for unprecedented, unexpected storytelling.

Personally I loved everything about this graphic novel storyline arc. The villain was something original - a guy who thinks he should be a Green Lantern, but isn't chosen. The concept of the Phantom Ring yielding every color of the spectrum was fascinating to read as well. But perhaps my favorite thing about this graphic novel was the art. Simply amazing. There were many times I would stop reading just so I could soak in every little nugget hidden in the full page illustrations. I would give this a 5/5 based on the artwork alone.

I'm a huge fan of Green Lantern in general but am really enjoying where this new concept is going in both book one and two. The two new lanterns show that they are human with their faults which makes them relatable and enjoyable. This is one of the most exciting and fantastic new arcs to have come out in years. Keep up the great work!

I was not impressed with the first volume in this series but now with the second the characters are growing into their own and soon. hopefully, they will become the stand alone superheroes worth following and not fall into the trap of being junior justice league members.

This was my first introduction to the Green Lanterns and although I enjoyed the diversity it failed to grab my attention.

Our two rookie Lanterns stumble through life as they try and learn the ropes on how to be a Green Lantern. This is the part Humphries really shines at. Neither of the Lanterns have really been trained and have to figure out how to both get past their own insecurities and physically figure out how to do their jobs.

Rami, a rogue Guardian has shown up at Baz's doorstep hiding a weapon of great power. The Phantom Ring, a power ring that anyone can wear, not just those that are chosen. And it has the powers of the entire emotional spectrum. Will Baz and Jessica be able to defeat the Phantom Lantern when the ring is stolen?

It's interesting to watch these 2 new lanterns grow into their rings. This book was clever, intriguing and action packed all the way through. It is starting to feel like this Green Lantern series will be a true story of misfits and the journey of these characters has so much promise because of it. A great read that ended on such a high note that my fingers are itching for the next installment.

ARC from Netgalley.
Before this Volume, all the way back to Blackest Night, the various colors of the Emotional Spectrum consisted of: Rage (Red), Greed (Orange), Fear (Yellow), Will (Green), Hope (Blue), Compassion (Indigo), Love (Violet), and Life (White) and Death (Black). Last Volume, a rogue Guardian showed up (Rami) and he was carrying a package which he guarded with his life. What is in the box? We find out here....

Enter Frank Laminski. Fellow Coast City resident. Fellow test pilot with Hal Jordan. Obsessed with Green Lantern. When John Stewart shows up as a GL with Hal (way back in the day!), Frank becomes single-minded to become worthy of a power ring. One day, a Green Lantern ring comes to him, and just as he's about to take it, it flies off to go to Simon Baz, one of the current Green Lanterns. This fractures Frank's psyche, and allows him to be influenced by the ghost of Volthoom, who directs him to Rami's box, which contains the one and only Phantom Ring. A Phantom Ring can be used by anyone, but has the major drawback of getting all its power from its user.

Frank, now dubbing himself the Phantom Lantern, goes off to "save the day". His Phantom Ring allows him to appear as a member of any corps, based on how his emotion state is. He tangles with Simon and Jessica, and seems to stop and stabilize when he changes Indigo, being overcome with Compassion. Once the Phantom Ring is taken from him though, he is obviously shown as insane.

Two members of the Green Lantern Corps show up too late to help, but it confirms that the GLC is back in action and Simon and Jessica are no longer alone in the galaxy. Unbeknownst to them.... Rami has been "spirit-switched" with Volthoom. How will this all play out? Will our GLs go to Oa to get training? When will they find out Rami is an imposter?

Green Lanterns is an amazing title! I'm really loving it so far and can't wait till the next Volume!
High recommend.

This was a great and original story. One of the few rebirth books I really enjoyed.

In 'Green Lanterns, Volume 2: The Phantom Lantern' by Sam Humphries with art by Robson Rocha, the Earth is now being protected by two new Green Lanterns, but will that be enough to save it?

Jessica Cruz and Simon Baz are the newest Green Lanterns, but Jessica can't quite control her power and Simon doesn't think he has enough power. They are also helping to hide Rami, one of the last Guardians. Rami has a secret, a phantom ring. With the phantom ring, anyone can wear it, and it covers all the color spectrums, but at a pretty great cost. This brings bad guy Volthoom out of the universe to hunt him down. It also brings a guy named Frank Laminski who was passed over to be a Green Lantern and has delusions of being a superhero.

It's a really solid story arc. Frank is played out as pitiable and a bit crazy. The original Guardian brings some good original history of how the rings were created. Simon and Jessica kind of come in to their own, which is good because they are going to need it. This is a pretty good team up. The art is fantastic. I really enjoyed this one.

I received a review copy of this graphic novel from DC Entertainment and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this graphic novel.

My favorite Green Lantern is Hal Jordan with Kyle Rayner a very close second. It took a long time for me to get into the Green Lantern Corps series which I started to read when Blackest Night began. I'm a fan of Green Lantern and I tried to keep up through New 52 so I got to see Simon Baz become a Green Lantern and I was a little uneasy with his picking up as yet another Lantern of Earth. Rebirth started and I had to find out what is going on with the missing Corps and what is going on with Hal since he was outcast from the Corp and using a Renegade ring. So I requested this series not knowing what to expect.

This series hasn't disappointed yet.I have been so impressed with the plot and artwork in these books that I am already looking forward to Vol 3 when ever it comes out. I have to thank NetGalley and DC Comics for letting me read these for reviews. I am thoroughly hooked on this series and Lantern Jessica is a close second to Hal Jordan in my favorite Lanterns.

So what is the Phantom Ring? This is the very first ring ever crafted by the Guardians of the Universe. Anyone can wield this ring because it doesn't choose the bearer and taps into the complete emotional spectrum. Like the White ring that Kyle Rayner has been given it taps into fear, rage, will, and all the other emotions bit the Phantom ring brings a power that is to much to handle. Jessica and Simon have been doing their best to protect this ring and the Guardian who forged it but it gets out and finds the most delusional and deranged person hell bent on becoming a Green Lantern.

Jessica and Simon will have to find this Phantom Lantern, while trying to find the Guardian and rescue him. In order to accomplish this they will have to face their greatest enemies, themselves. As Green Lanterns they are chosen because they can overcome great fear. This book tests these characters and I loved it. I highly recommend this book and one of the things I have to admit really getting a kick out of is the beginning of the book when it is Halloween. This book is easily a 5 out of 5 read. Love this series and can't wait to see what happens next with these two new Lanterns.

I think that Green Lanterns is my favourite storyline of Rebirth so far.

The Phantom Lantern starts with a two issue story about Halloween, which sets up the actual confrontation between the Green Lanterns and the Phantom Lantern nicely. We also see more of Jessica overcoming her anxiety and her inability to make a construct whilst justifying how she feels. I was surprised by how they managed to include an inner struggle for Simon, which I think will lead to a something major happening to him later as we slowly unravel his motivations.

The art style just seemed to work. I have no idea what they did but everything seemed to be right. I was most impressed about the facial expressions as I have always found that they seem to suffer the most in comic books for reason unknown to me.

You should definitely read both this volume and the pervious one as they both have an amazing message about believing in yourself.

Ok. Wow. That ending. It sorta hit me out of nowhere even though I probably should have seen it coming as the signs were there.

Jessica and Simon are still tasked with protecting the exiled Guardian Rami, who's quite a different sort. And they're still learning how to be Green Lanterns too.

They get to go up against the Dominators. Then up against a couple of unique Lanterns that don't exactly like the Guardians.

The Phantom Lantern is a really interesting story too. It definitely had different twists and turns and I wasn't totally sure where it was going to end up (always a nice feeling when it comes to a Comic Book. It means I haven't read everything there is to read and stuff can surprise me!)

I got this ARC through Netgalley on behalf of DC Entertainment.

The quality of this Green Lanterns series doesn't surprise me anymore. I was suspicious at first – worried that Simon and Jessica would be flat characters in a buddy story – but that feeling has passed. The two leads are developing in sensible yet compelling ways, and resisting becoming caricatures.

There are some slight moments in the book (trick-or-treating, cookie-baking), but these are some of the most essential parts for the character work. The story of the Phantom Lantern is well done, and lasts just about as long as it could. It's a self-contained narrative and character study, but it sets up something bigger and worse without feeling like just a prelude.

There's a surprising return of a previous enemy, and I wasn't especially excited about it, but it works well, and is a good hook for the next series.

Humphries seems to have this GL thing down: good, developed characters, a sense of the mythology without a redundant approach to it, and a willingness to combine the little with the epic and the funny with the drama.

This is a decent story for the second book of the Rebirthed Green Lanterns, even if it is clearly at least one issue too long, and the editors really need a certain coloured pencil through a lot of the thought boxes telling us what we already know. It again harks back to the ancient times of the Lanterns/Guardians/everything, but gives it to the new guys in spades, forcing the book to be a good balance of the old and the new. If only our two new heroes had a bit more to do, and the editors had in fact done a bit more, it would really be something.

I enjoyed this graphic novel. Many more genres to be explored.
