Wow. I had been putting off reading this book -- thinking it'd be mundane and clinical. It was neither! Meir Kryger breaks down several issues (medically and otherwise) that could contribute to sleepless nights, no matter the stage of your life. As someone who has frequently battled insomnia, I found the advice incredibly helpful and easy to comprehend. I'd recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn more about how to get a restful night's sleep.

The information in this book can help you recognize when you or a family member should seek professional help and suggest treatments that have been proven to work. It covers most, if not all problems men, women and children can be affected by stating that all three categories can be affected by different issues or in different ways by the same issue.
There are case histories for each of the problems enabling the reader to better understand the issues being discussed.
The most important issue, the author aims to suggest throughout this book is that anyone who has a serious problem falling or staying asleep that lasts more than a few weeks needs to see a medical practitioner to make sure that the insomnia is not a symptom of another disorder.
I have very little medical training and yet this book was still mainly accessible to me. If you have a sleeping disorder, or know someone who has, from narcolepsy to snoring and insomnia to restless legs syndrome then this is the book you need to read.

I requested this book from Netgalley as I’ve had sleep problems myself throughout my life, so was interested to read more about the subject.

Dr Meir Kryger is apparently a world authority on sleep and sleep disorders and this is very obvious as you read his book.

This is a very comprehensive book, which covers everything sleep-related in a very accessible way. It’s easy for anyone to understand as it’s written in plain English, free of jargon and technical language.

The book is laid out in a logical manner beginning with an explanation of what sleep is, why we need it and why our sleep patterns may change thoughout our lives, especially for women. It then progresses through three further sections discussing whether or not you have a sleep problem, followed by a thorough explanation of each of the many sleep disorders and finally how to get help for them.

Each section is very detailed and offers practical insights into how to get a sleep problem diagnosed as well as the possible treatments available.

All in all, this was a fascinating book which I am sure I will refer to again in the future. I would certainly recommend it to anybody else who is experiencing a sleep disorder.

The Mystery of Sleep is a comprehensive book about the many forms of sleep problems, the possible cause of a sleep problem and how to treat a sleep problem.

In a clear and accessible style, Meir Kryger describes the symptons of sleep problems for children, women, men and older people. He first focuses on the specific age groups and genders and the possible sleep problems that they might have and then deals with each sleep problem in detail again. He also gives tips on how to best communicate a sleep problem to your doctor and how to identify a well-trained sleep doctor. Additionally, he provides an overview about diseases and medications that may cause sleep disorders and sums up the different medications and natural treatments that are available to treat sleep disorders. There are also some examples for questionnaires to get a first clue whether one might have a sleep disorder or not.

The book is repetitive at some points, but I think that this is a huge advantage rather than a disadvantage. This allows for looking up sleep disorders that occur in a certain age group or only specific sleep problems without having to read the whole book without having problems to understand the terminology or having to look up a definition.

I really enjoyed reading this book and I learnt a lot through reading it. I would recommend this to anyone who's interested in sleep disorders or is looking for help. This book does a great job and provides information and advice for the whole family.
