I didn't realize this was erotica until I saw a few reviews. I don't read erotica, and will not be reading this book. I wish I had known before downloading it, but thank you for the opportunity.

I loved the beginning, in which we learn a bit about the Irish rising of 1798, Mary's role in it alongside her mother, who was killed, and Mary's consuming quest to win back her ancestral home via the seduction of and marriage to the local lord's son. I could even go along with her sudden arrest for theft and murder and her subsequent escape and journey to Gibraltar to find her fiance to clear her name. But then once she's on board ship with Captain Grant, things went downhill for me.

Don't get me wrong, I like sexy reads just fine, but I need more substance to go along with all the sex. I did not buy that somewhere along the way to the happily ever after she and Grant fell in love. That aspect of their relationship needed a lot more work. I did not buy that a 35-year-old sea captain, who had never considered settling down before, suddenly couldn't live without this little slip of a girl. Granted, she's salty and mysterious, but again, I really needed to see more relationship development. I actually grew a little bored with the nonstop sex, and I closed the book about two-thirds of the way through when an eye-rolling orgy popped up. But then I figured, I made it this far, let's just see how it ends.

Her plan to find her fiance and win back her home fell by the wayside but was conveniently resurrected at the end. It does end well, with everything wrapped up in a neat bow, but I just wasn't feeling it. I'm definitely in the minority on this one, so if erotica is your thing, you will probably really like this. I tend to stay away from it because I need more story and emotion with my sex, and this book reminded me of that.

The Captain’s Rebel by C.B. Halverson is the first story I’ve read by this author, and being a Scorched title ensures there will be steamy scenes as part of the seafaring voyage taken by the heroine to secure her fortunes. It’s a swashbuckling adventure with a side of kink that leads to a very satisfying happy ever after.

Mary O’Malley is tired of waiting. Determined to secure her rightful place as the Lady of Castle Dunraven which once belonged to her ancestors, she slowly but surely seduces a promise of marriage from Johnny Brighton, son of the current Lord. When Johnny heads off to fight with the English Navy, her plans are thwarted. A scheming and jealous wannabe suitor destroys the papers proving Mary’s claims, leaving her running for her life, determined to find Johnny come hell or high water. Disguised as a cabin boy, Mary finds her way onto the ship that Johnny was last seen upon. The dangerous but very attractive Captain Richard Grant sees through her disguise and soon Mary finds herself embroiled in an affair with the Captain that opens up a whole new world of dominance and submission. Intrigue, passion, and danger court their every move and Mary must make the ultimate choice – her country, or her heart.

I really enjoyed this adventurous and very sexy romance! One must understand that Mary's situation as a young woman in this time period is one of limitations and she believes her only way out of poverty is to marry Johnny. It's her singular goal, and she'll do anything to achieve it. At the same time, she doesn't love him, and though they have some sexual encounters at the start of the story before Johnny joins the Navy, she feels no real emotional attachment to him (nor him to her). Thus, the relationship she enters into with the Captain on his ship, where she must pretend to be his cabin boy and cater to him, is purely a sexual one (at least at first) and doesn't change her goal to find Johnny and marry him. This may make her seem cold-hearted but in her circumstances survival trumps emotions. The story is told in first person point of view, which took a bit to get used to at first, but explains the thoughts behind her actions and makes her a more sympathetic character.

Captain Grant is a respected Navy Officer, used to a well run ship and having people follow his orders. As Mary is the only woman on board, and one who attends him daily, he finds it hard to fight his attraction to her. A strapping punishment meted out as he would any other under his command leads to some surprising revelations, and starts a sexual relationship between them. Neither is under any illusion that what is happening between them is permanent. But along the way, something changes and their hearts get involved.

Of course it's never smooth sailing at sea, and when French enemy ships are spotted, all bets for an easy voyage are off. There are several action packed scenes that add to the drama and intensity of the story as Mary finds herself embroiled in questions of crown and country. Mary and the Captain eventually get their happy ending but not without testing the limits of their trust and commitment to each other. The Captain's Rebel is an exciting and lusty adventure on the high seas!

When I first read the book description of ‘The Captain’s Rebel’ I was immediately fascinated by this book. I love romance novels, and pirate stories so when I saw that this book was about a captain I knew I wanted to start reading this book.

In ‘The Captain’s Rebel’ we meet Mary O’Malley. Mary is determined to get her ancestors land back. To achieve that she is marrying one of her old friends, at least that is the plan. When things don’t go as planned, and her own life is in danger, Mary embarks on a journey across the Atlantic Ocean as a cabin boy. There Mary meets the ship’s captain Richard Grant. And soon Mary finds out that Richard isn’t one to fool easily.

The beginning of ‘The Captain’s Rebel’ was a little hard to get into if you ask me. It really took me some time to get used to the characters and the way they acted. Since ‘The Captain’s Rebel’ is a historical romance novel, I suspected a certain way of communication and courting, but this was definitely something else.

The main character Mary wasn’t really my kind of character. I began to like her more and more how farther I got into the story, but especially in the beginning I just didn’t really like her. She was to slutty, and kind of selfish is you ask me.
Captain Richard Grant was a character I liked from the start. He was mysterious, and kind of funny and he really had something charming and endearing about him.

‘The Captain’s Rebel’ had some BDSM in it, what isn’t really my thing but it didn’t bother me. It seemed to fit the characters and their romance. And let me tell you, the romance between Mary and Richard was really good. I just loved those two, and the whole BDSM bit, seemed to fit their relationship perfectly.

Although there were some parts about this book I didn’t really like, I loved most of this read. ‘The Captain’s Rebel’ is definitely a different kind of historical romance read than you usual see.

Since I am a huge fan of romance I expect to find a book that will deliver on all aspects of the actual theme and when I selected "The Captain's Rebel," as part of my review profile I was expecting to find such traits. Morosely, this was a novel that I did not overall favor as I certainly did not care for the romance that I discovered. I use the term "romance," lightly because what was exchanged between the characters within this book more sex rather than actual to-die-for romance and that just didn't settle well with me.

Don't get me wrong a romantic foundation needs solid sensual content, but this book was far more Erotic in nature than in romance. This is my largest complaint not only with this book but with the Erotic genre in its entirely. I want more than just wall banger sex I need the satisfaction of a romantic HEA-ending. At least I root for the ending, especially in a historical-fiction novel.

I also did not like the overall writing of the book as it felt dry. I did not find this book to be entertaining and I wish that were not the case because this story had such potential. In my opinion, it needed a deeper plot, the author needed to go beyond the traditional lines of the genres, take bigger and bolder risks. I wanted an adventure in the great, vast of the ocean. I wanted a Captain to sweep me off the shore, not punish me with a whip and sex. Too over the top for this book.

Had this book been dialed down with the sex, pushed forward with the romance and been more of a wild adventure I would have liked it. To be fair this is not the worst book I have ever read. It is, in fact, a decent read, just isn't my ideal read.

Okay, I know. Gorgeous cover, right? Go on, stare at it a bit. I’ll wait.

Wipe the drool off your chin now.

This book is just as delicious as that cover. The historical detail, the battle scenes, the motivations, and believability, of the main character, Mary, it’s all fantastic.

It’s not your typical arranged marriage historical romance either.

One of the things I love about Ms. Halverson’s writing (other than the fantastic sense of place I get when I read her books) is that her characters aren’t Mary Sues. They don’t just float along doing nothing much of anything, letting stuff happen to them.

Oh no, her characters take life by the balls and make it say uncle, just like women have done throughout history.

To see that in a historical novel, a woman bent on doing whatever she must to reach her goals? Absolute perfection. I loved every second of it.

THEN we get some delicious, hot as sin, kinky, sex to go with it. Being a practitioner, I’m always a little leery of books that advertise kink, but I didn’t have any issues with presentation. You really can’t go wrong with this book. It’s just so scrumptious.

Thank you to the author and Entangled for allowing me to read an ARC

This book was not what I was expecting at all! This is 50 Shades of Pirates! I didn't even think that way of "acting" sexually existed then.

I was hooked instantly in this story. I think what intrigued me so much was Mary. She was a girl taken by a boy who made a lot of promises to her without actually keeping them. The author sets up what we'll call a weak heroine here. But then about two chapters later, she makes a 360 and suddenly this girl becomes a strong willed woman out to get him back by sneaking onto a ship as a boy. But even better, she's not chasing after him for love, but rather to reclaim her home, which marriage to him would bring. And I loved this!! It set up a strong character but also shows us she does have a soft, feminine side about her.

Then there is Captain Grant, who is strong, brave and hot. I think he's a great and fair captain, making him a likable character. But then there's the fun and sexual side of him which is just plain great.

The sex...oh where do I begin...? It took me bu surprise. I have read this author's NA series and this is just the complete opposite of that. It's really the opposite of what I expected. But that's a good thing. It isn't a historical romance with tame sex, I'll say.

The sex brought on the romance between the two of them and may I say *swoon*. The reason I am giving this 4 and not 5 stars is only because I wish there was more "them" scenes and less sex scenes. They were very good together and I liked the scenes where they were just being themselves together and I wish there was a bit more of those to strengthen their romance.

Without spoiling the ending, I will say I was surprised and happy by it. It didn't go exactly as I assumed it would so I liked the surprise but more so, I liked the plot the ending had. It was fast paced and heart pounding and just plain fantastic.

I like the author in general it seems, no matter what she writes. And I look forward to reading what else she writes under this alias.

Loved this. A spirited Irish woman disguised as a cabin boy meets a staunch naval captain. Sexy, passionate, and an intriguing story involving international espionage in a gorgeous historical setting. Beautiful.

Our Review
This is a new author for us and we are glad to announce we loved our first read by her.
What an exciting read from the very first pages. The characters were griping and exciting funny and love-able. A historical romance with an erotic twist and unlike anything I read before and I loved it.

Grant and Mary two opposites that have common ground when it comes to their sexual pleasure.A game that started out to protect Mary turned out to be so much more. This couple had some major chemistry that brought out each others inhibitions that had them playing and acting out some of their most sensual sexual fantasies.

I always have a favorite character and mine is going to be Grant.I loved how interesting he was,he had a commanding personality, tall dark handsome, had a dangerous aura, was possessive, protective and into sexual kink.I enjoyed the game he played with Mary it was a sensual dance of cat and mouse.I loved how he saw the real Mary and not the Mary she pretended to be.He new she was a strong and determined sensual women who would do whatever it took to get the thing she wanted most.Grants perfect match yet belongs to another.

I admired Mary and her determination to protect and give a better life to those people she cared about.Found her to be smart ,sexy, open minded, tough enough to protect herself on more than one occasion and just down right love able.I loved how she was willing to experiment sexually and how she demanded what she wanted and needed during her liaisons with Grant.I love how Bold she was for a girl who was raised to be prim and proper but anything but.

I have to say I rooted for this couple from the very beginning to find the love and happiness that they both deserved .To be able to overcome the odds for them to be together.

Favorite Scene - When Mary was forced to bring sexual gratification to a couple while pretending to be a man and how she did the deed with a straight face while I laughed so hard through the entire scenario.

A page turner from beginning to end and I could not put the book down until it was finished.I love reading the normal historical romances but loved even more that the author decided to add a bdsm /erotica element into the mix to change it up a bit for these amazing characters. The story had excitement, intrigue, sexy captains, warfare love, humor, and some major surprises and some omg moments that I did not expect along with secrets and lies coming to life. All the elements I love in a story to make it a amazing and interesting read for me.

I love when I fall in love and can connect with the characters I read about and I was able to do that with this couple it makes more of an enticing read for me and then I know that I will absolutely love the story I am reading.I have to say that this author was able to make me laugh as well as cry throughout the story.

A recommend read for all and we are very much looking forward to another romance novel in the near future. This story goes into the keeper pile to read again at a later date. The author did an amazing job with her debut novel.

5 stars from us !

Who knew….Mary had a dark, sexy, and dangerous side. I found her so interesting. The life she lives was not easy and some of that is of her own doing but much of it is by circumstances beyond her control. Yet when she meets Captain Grant her dark and dominant side came flying out. Mary was strong, bold, and able to hold her own in any situation in a time when women were not fully respected or taken serious.

The Captain’s Rebel is a great historical pirate story with the twists of some DBSM. CB Halverson did an amazing job of heating the scenes up while telling a story of life on a pirate ship at the same time.

The ending was perfect and unexpected. I thought I knew what was going to happen, I thought I knew where it was heading yet I was surprised. I look forward to more from CB Halverson.

The Captain's Rebel (Irish Heroines) by C. B. Halverson is a interesting read. Normally, I do not enjoy first person reads, however, once you start reading this story, you soon forget it's written in first person, you get caught up in the story.

Captain Richard Grant and Mary O'Malley know that land, power and influence has no place where love is considered. Neither are what a appear, both have insecurities, anxieties and their multi-layered personalities, brings this story to life.
I enjoyed watching their relationship come across, in their story of danger, secrets, compromise, submission and the promise of love.

Steady paced, sensually charged with BDSM, and sizzling hot sensual scenes. If you do NOT enjoy this much sensuality, then "The Captain's Rebel" may not be a story for you to read. However, the context of this story well out weighs the sensual aspects of the story, in my opinion.
This author was a new author to me, and I look forward to reading more of her intriguing stories.
Mary was an usual heroine, an Irish lass at that, but a resourceful one as well, a definite rebel. Grant was a powerful captain who quickly made his way through the Royal Navy ranks. He doesn't intend to mess up his mission, not even for a bonny lass, who dresses as a boy. Fans of sexually charged stories with complicated, and engaging characters and a plot with many aspects to the story, are sure to enjoy " The Captain's Rebel". I certainly did.
I recent complimentary copy.

I'm not one to love historical romances but this book has made me rethink everything I've been missing out on! Mary is an Irish born rebel who's just one of the many that suffered the effects of the Rebellion in 1798 (I actually learned something) and when the one thing to grant her home freedom disappears, she goes out to retrieve it. At all costs.

The tone of this story and writing style were amazing. I loved how stubborn she was, how persistent and passionate she felt for her country. Grant, a captain who knew more than anyone about hardship and hard work, refuses to grasp her understanding of boarding a Navy's ship under guise. Yet when push comes to shove, he finds himself doing everything in his power to keep her safe. Their chemistry was off the charts, and since I'm a sucker for the hate-first-love-later romances, it wasn't hard to get into their dominate games of keeping control. There was adventure, suspense, a thrilling secret that would make or break them. The ending was a little weird for me but in all honesty, I don't exactly have the grounds to judge how one would react in the face of danger. But still, it left me very satisfied in the end and I can't wait to see what other Irish heroines Halverson has in store. Definite recommend for you history buffs that enjoy a good tale.

High Seas Hotness! The Captain's Rebel had EVERYTHING that I like in an interesting historical romance!

Mary was bold, brash, independent, strong yet feminine and a complete rebel that took no guff. Richard was dashing, swoon-worthy, totally in charge and an alpha with a heart. Their chemistry was so explosive, I thought my Kindle was going to spontaneously combust! Heads up... This is no vanilla tome! The heat level is off the charts, and the naughty factor is a 10+! There is also a very intriguing plot line that immediately draws you in and continues to move at a rapid clip, keeping you swiping the pages with an enthusiasm and voraciousness that rivals the lusty sexploits of Mary and the good Captain! The characters are complex and well-developed and are as much fun to read out of the Captain's cabin as in.

*I received a complimentary ARC of this book from NetGalley & Entangled Publishing, LLC in order to read and provide a voluntary, unbiased and honest review, should I choose to do so.

This is the first book I've read by C.B. Halverson and I can assure that it will most certainly not be my last. This is the sexiest historical romance I've read in a long time, possibly ever. It's the kind of book that sort of just sneaks up in you. The cover is beautiful and the synopsis is intriguing but when you start reading you're immediately swept away into a fast paced story that holds you until the very end. The Captain's Rebel is absolutely, positively going into my definitely reading again pile!

Mary O'Malley loves one thing above all others, her ancestral home of Dunraven. She will do anything to return it to her family and it's within her grasp when she's falsely imprisoned. After narrowly escaping, Mary sets off on a high seas journey across the Atlantic disguised as a cabin boy for Captain Richard Grant. She may have fooled the rest of the crew but Grant knows her secret and uses it to his advantage. What starts out as a game turns into something so much more but will Mary be able to give up Dunraven for a love unlike any other?

As I mentioned before, this story will grab you right from the first chapter. We're introduced to Mary and given a taste of her simple life in Ireland but there's nothing simple about Mary. She has big dreams and she's got her future completely mapped out. She's strong-willed, courageous and she'll do anything to get what she wants. Captain Grant comes off as this quiet, unassuming man. However, he proves to be anything but that. He's sexy as sin and the things he does to Mary are even sexier. That's all I'm going to say about that aspect of the story because it caught me off guard. I'm not sure what I was expecting when I set out to read this book but it wasn't the amazing chemistry between Mary and Grant. That made this story so much more interesting and I couldn't put it down. I loved every interaction between our hero and heroine. The push and pull between them is so freaking hot and I constantly found myself wanting more. The secondary characters are also captivating and add depth and complexity to an already intricate plot. This story is so full of passion and romance but it's mixed with a healthy dose of action and suspense. There are plenty of twists and turns that constantly keep you wondering what's going to happen to our hero and heroine and it doesn't stop until the very last page. The Captain's Rebel is everything you could possibly want and more in a historical romance. I can't wait to see what C.B. Halverson has in store for us next in this amazing series!

If you're looking for a historical romance with...well, everything, this will be your jam. Sassy heroine disguised as a boy, commanding hero, rough sex/bdsm, sea battles, an orgy, and murder are only a few of the highlights of this book. Seriously, it's a heaping helping of sex of various kinds topped with lashings of epic crazysauce, delivered with a strong voice and an excellent sense of the nautical setting.

'The Captain's Rebel' by C. B Halverson is the story of Captain Richard Grant and Mary O’Malley.
Mary thought she was in love with Johnny who she was great friends with. Johnny had promised to marry her but he ended up going off to war. Then her father tried to marry her off to someone that she didn't want to marry...not to mention that he was a mean. When she told the story of her and Johnny were to marry the next set of events has her on the run. That running took her to pretend to be a Cabin Boy on Captain Grants ship. Once they were at see and Captain Grant saw her he knew right away that she was a women and took her to be his 'Cabin Boy'. Mary gave him a false name of Margaret. Captain Grant tried to keep a close eye on Mary and he did have to 'discipline' her a few times. Each time it seem to make them want each other more.
This was a very hot exciting read! Can't wait to read more from this author!

The Captain's Rebel was not what I expected and not having read any books by C. B. Halverson, I had nothing to compare it to. The book was well-written and definitely had many scenes that were either tense or very erotic.
The author has integrated Irish and English history into the story as well as covered aspects of life at sea in a very believable and readable manner. The history has not overshadowed the story but given it greater depth.
I like the character of Mary, who stows away on the ship, commanded by Captain Grant. He was quite a complex character but the two characters work well together and their passion is unmistakeable.
