I love having the opportunity to review a reissue. This was one of the first Foster books I ever read. It is just as good now as it was then.
Quinton Murphy has more money than he can spend and has flexible working hours. He gives both time and money to boys less fortunate than him. Quinton is perfect.
Ashley comes from handout royalty and is determined to work for what she wants. She burns the candle at both ends knowing that it will be worth it to teach her goals.
Ashley is also the owner of an explosive stalker. Quinton will join forces with Ashley's family to keep her safe and expose the villain.
I thought this was a great contemporary romance! The story of Ashley Miles and Quinton Murphy was fun and entertaining. The characters were wonderful, and the storyline kept me interested. I thought it was a great follow up to the first book in Foster's Law Series. Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for providing a copy of the book in return for an honest review.
Murphy's Law
Law Series - Book 2
By Lori Foster
Zebra - October 2006
Reissued April 2017
Contemporary Romance
Murphy's Law is the second story in Lori Foster's Law series. It is tied closely to Jude's Law and it, and this review, does contain spoilers to that story.
Ashley Miles did not have any extra time in her life. She was too busy with work and school. Quinton Murphy, however, didn't seem to understand this. He kept appearing at the most inopportune times. Even worse, he didn't seem to accept that she wasn't interested. Well, she was indeed interested, more than interested if she was honest with herself, but she just didn't have time. Anyways, she was not rich, still a student, worked menial jobs, and didn't have the body, or style, most men would be attracted to.
Many would think that he was getting nowhere fast, but Quinton knew that sometimes the best things came to those with patience. And Ashley was definitely one of the best. She was funny, quirky, and interesting. The more he got to know her, the more she fascinated him. He didn't care if she didn't have money, he had enough for them both, but he respected her determination to pull herself out from where she had grown up.
Just as things start to get interesting, and not just the wedding of Ashley's best friend May Price to professional fighter, and movie star Jude Jamison, an enemy of theirs reappears only to have Ashley in his sights. Jude and his friend Denny will use all their resources to keep her safe. Quinton, however, knows the safest place for Ashley is with him.
Murphy's Law was an entertaining classic Lori Foster romance. I had not read it before, nor have I read Jude's Law, but it was easy to follow and although it was obviously a sequel, it still felt complete. Ashley is an admirable heroine having been raised, or rather, having lived with two people who did not raise her. She had moved on and was creating a bright new future for herself. Luckily, she happens to find Quinton who compliments her perfectly. I really enjoyed the opportunity to go back and read this story that I had originally missed.
I have read this book before and didn't realize that it was a reprint. Love Lori Foster and read all her books. This one was a treasure that I forgot I have already read.
Lori Foster always writes a fun engaging romance story, and "Murphy's Law" as a re-release shows how much great storytelling never goes out of style. A hunky millionaire that will melt your heart, a feisty woman that has a plan for her life, and a killer on the loose, what could go wrong, or how will it right itself? Quinton and Ashley's story was one such storyline. Quinton found that all of his money couldn't sway a strong-willed Ashley to change her timeline on her life's plan. What Ashley hadn't counted on was her timeline changing somewhat with a killer after her while falling in love with Quinton. The story was released originally in 2006, with the author writing of strong women and the men who loved them. A book for the ages and the romance lover, it is a must have for your bookshelf. Thank you to Zebra/Kensington Books for gifting me "Murphy's Law". My opinion is my own. This is mine 4.25 Stars!
After 16% I have no clue what is going on with this story. I find it extremely confusing.
Ashley Miles is a hard-working, goal-oriented woman. She works two jobs and goes to school trying to make a better life for herself. Her busy schedule doesnt give her time for much else, but there is one very determined man who will do any and everything he can to be the extra-curricular activity she makes time for. Quinton Murphy is the kind of man I wouldn't mind spending my spare time with (if he wasnt a fictional character and I wasnt married of course :). He is gorgeous, hard-working and also happens to be a wonderful guy! What more can a girl ask for? Quinton is determined to get to know Ashley. She isn't his usual type, but there's just something about the spunky, unique, workacholic that he can't get enough of. Her brutal honesty and scortching kisses ignite a fire in him that isn't easy for him to ignore. When danger finds its way to Ashley's front door, Quinton vows to keep her safe. Ashley is the perfect blend of independant, yet also knowing when she may need help. The more time they spend together, Quinton begins to realize he wants to be more than just an extra-curricular activity to this very special woman. Ashley was my favorite kind of heroine. She was strong, yet vulnerable. She was sacracstic, honest, and unique. Seeing the milionaire, buisnessman fall for his office cleaning lady gives every woman out there hope that anything can happen. MURPHY'S LAW was a funny, passionate romance. Ashley and Quinton were both a breath of fresh air and were each uniquely special characters. Their story was everything I was hoping for and more.
I feel so bad for not finishing a Lori Foster book! I have started and stopped this book 3 times. It’s a re-release and I could tell the writing was a little different. You get right into the mind of someone wanting revenge and the hero felt a little stalkerish right off the bat. This put me off. So I decided to wait and get her newer books and leave this one to the past.
Not too bad of a romance. I liked Ashley and her way of speaking without holding anything back. It made for some funny conversations.
Murphy's Law is sweet, and a little sexy in a kind of old fashioned way. Now that I know this is 2nd in a series, it explains why I felt a little lost in the beginning. But, soon things picked up and I was able to get through it with a basic understanding.
Quinton is a CEO of a successful consulting company who is completely in lust with an awkward, march to the beat of a different drummer kind of woman named Ashley. At first she won't have anything to do with him, until she caves to her own attraction to him and agrees to take him to her sister from another mister's wedding, but only as friends, no sexy strings attached. Of course, that no sex thing goes by the wayside quickly, as their mutual attraction ignites.
There's also a subplot involving a crazed psycho stalker who is determined to get to Ashley for reasons I didn't quite understand, reasons that were probably better explained in the first book in this series. It helps the pace along, though, so I could appreciate this little side story.
I like both Quinton and Ashley, especially Ashley. She's a refreshing change. She's a 27 year old virgin who says exactly what she thinks, social niceties be damned. It drives Quinton crazy, but in a good way, and it made me love her even more. She's funny, feisty and super independent, something that all authors should take note when writing heroines. Their chemistry is sexy, but it felt a bit old fashioned in a way, not necessarily in a bad way, though.
I also like the secondary cast, especially Denny, Ashley's pseudo father. He's protective and sweet and adores Ashley, a story about him wouldn't be a bad thing.
3.5 stars--MURPHY’S LAW is the second installment and re-release in Lori Foster’s contemporary, adult LAW romance series. This is waitress/student/cleaning person Ashley Miles, and successful businessman Quinton Murphy’s story line. MURPHY’S LAW can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty although some of the premise is predicated on the events of book on. Any important information from the previous story line is revealed where necessary. The reader is first introduced to the couple in book one-Jude’s Law.
Told from several third person perspectives including Ashley and Quinton MURPHY’S LAW focuses on the building relationship between thirty three year old successful and wealthy businessman Quinton Murphy, and twenty seven year old, struggling student and waitress Ashley Miles. Ashley is part of the cleaning crew in the office building where Quinton’s family owned consulting firm leases space, and Quinton’s attraction to Ashley is compounded by her refusal to trust the man who is offering her the world. With her best friend’s wedding only days away, Quinton offers himself as Ashley’s plus-one hoping for a chance with the spunky cleaning lady who has caught his eye. But someone is stalking our story line heroine, and the threats against her life are becoming more dangerous and personal. What ensues is the romantic relationship between our leading couple, and Quinton’s struggle to protect the woman with whom he is falling in love.
The relationship between Quinton and Ashley begins as a mutual attraction although Ashley struggles with issues of money, trust, and low self-esteem. The trust issue comes into play several times throughout the story when Quinton’s actions prove that, he too, struggles with Ashley’s less than stellar background and upbringing. As a virgin our heroine has very little experience with men but Quinton has offered to take it slow in his relationship with Ashley Miles. The $ex scenes are intimate without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.
The colorful secondary and supporting characters include former MMA fighter Denny Zip, Jude Jamison, May Price and May’s brother Tim from book one JUDE’S LAW. Ashley’s friendship with May finds our heroine the target of revenge when someone from Jude’s past returns for vengeance.
MURPHY’S LAW is a sweet story with a little bit of mystery, suspense and romance. The story line is predictable; the conflict resolution is quick and with very little fanfare-I was hoping for a little ‘more’. The premise is heartwarming; the romance is encouraging; the characters are animated and spirited. MURPHY’S LAW is an engaging story line with a happily ever after.

Murphy's Law, by Lori Foster is an enjoyable contemporary romance with an underling mystery mixed into the plot.
As the story unfolds, it's evident that Ashley Miles is determined to be independent and not fall for the wealthy and accomplished businessman, Quinton Murphy, even if their chemistry is unmistakable. However, their lives are slightly intertwined already and when an unknown someone is after Ashley, there's no stopping Quinton from trying to protect and claim her.
In chapter 2, Ashley is thinking that "whatever could go wrong, did. Murphy's Law. In her case it was more like Quinton Murphy's Law because when she got near him, she made mistakes left and right. One look at the man and she forgot common sense, self-restraint, and her touted goals for the future."
Since it's the second book in the Law series, it's recommended to start with the first book, Jude's Law, yet it's not necessary to read the books in order.
Murphy's Law is a captivating book with intriguing characters, and it's geared towards those who enjoy reading modern romance stories.
Note: I received this book from NetGalley, which is a program designed for bloggers to write book reviews in exchange for books, yet the opinions expressed in this review are my own.
Murphy's Law was a great book and I loved all the characters. I had fun reading this one and I always love Lori's books and this one is no exception. Such a great read.
I liked this read. Ashley and Quinton are complete opposites but work together. This is a fast paced read with plenty of drama. The story is fun and Ashley is so entertaining. A really good read.
'Murphy's Law' by Lori Foster is book Two in the "Law" series. This is the story of Ashley Miles and Quinton Murphy. I haven't read the previous book so for me this was a standalone book. This book didn't cover the meeting of Ashley and Quinton...so I assume that was in the previous book. Also know that this book was previously released around 2006. This new version does have a new cover on it too.
This was a sweet romance with a determine man (Quinton) who seemed to know what he wants. A women who thought she knew what she wants but Quinton is slowly changing that. This does have some drama with someone who is after Ashley...but Quinton is trying to keep her safe.
"My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read."

This is the second book in the series and I didn't read the first one so I think I would have enjoyed this one more if I had. I may read it again after going back and reading book one.
This book centers around Quinton Murphy who wants Ashley Miles. Quinton is rich and sophisticated and Ashley is not rich and is quirky. She had a bad childhood and is committed to making something of herself so she has no time for men or relationships. Quinton is willing to work hard and not give up in order to get Ashley to give him a chance. There is a stalker which is a villain from book one who is out to get Ashley which sends Quinton into protective mode.
What I really liked about this book was that Ashley was smart. For the most part, she was happy to have the help in protecting herself, she was self-aware and except for the end didn't make any stupid decisions. I liked the secondary characters as well and probably would have liked them even more after reading the first book. I liked the snark and sass between Quinton and Ashley and I also really liked Quinton's character.
However, I thought the book got a bit bogged down in the middle and the pacing slowed down a bit. The villain came off a little bit ridiculous and I was never worried about him. Also the end of the book was VERY rushed.
Overall, a cute, easy and fun book although predictable. Again, I think I would have enjoyed this book even more if I had read the first one although you can figure out the backstory easy enough without it.
This is Lori Foster’s 2006 book re-released with a new cover. Love the cover. However, you can definitely tell this is an earlier book. Her growth as a writer is evident if you have read anything recent by her and go back to read this.
Ashley Miles had it rough growing up. Her parents lived off the kindness of strangers and barely acknowledged her existence. She left home at 17 and never looked back. She is now 27, working 2 jobs and putting herself through college. She is determined to make it on her own and will never accept charity.
Quinton Murphy grew up wealthy but has worked hard to make his own money. He literally runs into Ashley coming into work as he is leaving and is immediately taken with her sass and attitude. Intrigued, he decides to pursue her, only to be rebuked at every turn.
Ashley is supposed to be 27 in this story. She is also a virgin. She has enough on her plate trying to survive so she’s never really dated. Most of the time, Ashley comes off as much younger. Her language just isn’t in sync with someone her age who supposedly had to grow up as fast as she did and with her life experience.
I loved Denny’s character. What a great, standup guy, and entertaining. He is Ashley’s surrogate dad and very protective of her. It was nice to see Tim grow up as well.
This story is very predictable. Even the stalker line you could see what was coming. So, just an okay read for me. I love her MMA series and highly recommend them.
I voluntarily read a copy provided by NetGalley.
Holy chemistry! This book had chemistry in spades between Ashley and Quinton. I enjoyed this book very much. It was a fast read for me because I couldn't stop once I started. If you are a fan of Lori Foster, you won't be disappointed in this book! It is one that I will read over and over again.
I voluntarily reviewed an advance ready copy of this book provided by NetGalley.
This is a re release of an old book by Lori Foster. As I have been a fan of hers for many years, I am sure that I had already read it, but since it was so long ago, it felt fresh and new to me. Ms. Foster has always been able to craft a good plot, and a fun couple with interesting dialogue. It was a little far fetched, but then again, when reading a contemporary romance, what the reader really wants is the HEA, and that happens nicely. As I said, this is a re release from 2006, but I sense that some updating was done to keep the plot fresh and contemporary. Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher, I am able to say it was a nice way to spend a rainy afternoon.
What a fun read! Ashley was a hoot! She was socially awkward, blunt and to the point. You always knew what she was thinking and while she was stubborn, she also conceded when she knew the other person was right. That's such a rare trait to find in a heroine.
Ashley has had a not so nice childhood where her parents treated her more like an obligation and took charity from others instead of working. Because of this, she has almost too much pride to accept help and insists on making her own way. In a way, this is what made me like her character more. She was very feisty and how she handled others trying to coddle her was entertaining.
Quinton was raised much differently. He had a home with loving parents and grew up wealthy. Despite having money, he's not a snob and is quite generous. When you find out how generous he is, you fall that much harder for his character. They seemed like such an odd pairing but that's what I liked most about them.
We don't get to see their actual meeting in this book since it took place in Jude and May's story, but that's all I felt like I missed out on. It can definitely be read as a standalone. This is my first book from this author and I will definitely look into more of her books. ARC provided by Netgalley.
