Great idea for a book and really well executed. A thoroughly good read. Highly recommended. .
I love all kinds of thrillers and mysteries which can be kind of heavy at times and cozy mysteries are a fun read with a little tension, but with the same amount of enjoyment! This was a fun, interesting read with good character development, a strong plot line and a believable conclusion. It even had a delicious dash of humor. I will definitely read other works by this author!
This is the 22nd book in this series and is another fun cozy entry. Savannah and her new husband, along with the rest of their detective agency take a cruise to protect their clients, a famous writer and her husband. Unfortunately they leave the ship without telling Savannah and wind up dying in a crash. There are lots of skeletons in the dead authors closet and it will be a team effort to track down the killer. I enjoyed the setting and the mystery and, as I have not read the entire series, I look forward to playing catch up.
Savannah and her crew are back, this time on cruise. This is always a solid mystery with well established characters and storyline. The cruise setting was great with even more suspects then usually. The ending was the best
Been a fan of the Savannah Reid series for a long time. Plus size Private Investigator Savannah is not a twenty something, classically beautiful, fitness buff. This instantly makes her more relatable to the average woman. I also enjoy the comraderie of the characters in this series. Her husband Dirk, friends John, Ryan, Tammy and relatives: Granny & Waycross are featured. Savannah and the Moonlight Magnolia Detective Agency and in laws embark on an Alaskan cruise to protect famous mystery author Natasha Van Cleef. Of course, trouble comes along on the cruise, also. Natasha and husband leave the ship and are killed in an explosion. Savannah and crew begin an investigation to find out who is responsible. There are laughs and clues along the way. This is a cozy mystery and cozy mysteries typically do not have the most complicated plot or edge of your seat suspense. Cozies draw you into the book thru the characters and making you feel at home and comfortable with them while guessing the outcome. Every Body on Deck succeeds with the cozy formula. I was given an ARC copy of this book thru Netgalley for an honest review.
This is the next thrilling Savannah Reid Mystery!!! This is a favorite cozy series as it has all the elements of a great cozy read. I love the characters, the location descriptions and the witty repartee.. Savannah is a great protagonist as she solves another complicated murder . This book is more on the serious side in a departure from the others in series,. The sleuth is very much a puzzle with many clues along the way. I loved it from beginning to end.
I'm not sure if it was due to it being so late in the series or if I just didn't like the writing but I did not care for this book. I loved Savannah's grandmother but I could not connect with the rest of the characters. I DNF'd this about halfway through. I will pick up the first book in the series just to see if me not liking this book was due to it being a later edition to the series.
Every Body on Deck by G.A. McKevett is part of the Savannah Reid Mystery Series. PI Savannah and her entire detective agency are hired to accompany a famous author on an Alaskan cruise. At the first port the author and her husband jump ship and are murdered. Savannah is determined to solve the crime to protect her reputation and alleviate her guilt. I liked the book, but I did not love it. The story line was choppy at times and a bit annoying at others. While it was enjoyable, I felt the mystery was a bit too easy to solve.
EVERY BODY ON DECK is book 22 in G.A. McKevett's cozy mystery series about PI Savannah Reid. One of Savannah's favorite authors is looking for some protection, while she's on an Alaskan cruise, after getting threatening letters. I know this story is going to be delicious when the rest of Savannah's Moonlight Magnolia Detective Agency crew gets paid to tag along, but it becomes quite the family affair when the gang brings along Granny Reid, as well as Savannah's mother and father-in-law. The charming vignettes with friends and family provide humor and are a wonderful counterpoint to the Machiavellian murder plot and treachery.
G.A. McKevett's Savannah Reid books are like tasty treats I look forward to all year long, but EVERY BODY ON DECK is particularly delightful for me, because I find it to very reminiscent of some of my favorite Agatha Christie mysteries. Hidden ulterior motives, unexpected twists, and dodgy characters kept me riveted to this story as I continued to read along. Whether Alaska is considered an exotic locale is open to personal interpretation, but G.A. McKevett brings the locations to life and makes me feel as though I were there. When the sleuths must determine whether there has been murder most foul, or merely a baffling and incredibly disturbing disappearance, McKevett is able to very effectively convey a sense of urgency.
EVERY BODY ON DECK is a superlative mystery with an amazing cast of good guys and bad guys. The possible villains -- ranging from a seemingly clueless personal assistant to a lovelorn mobster -- are as entertaining as they are suspicious. As always, the friendships between the fellow detectives and their banter puts a huge smile on my face, and add an extra layer of fabulousness to an already enjoyable cozy mystery. The unexpected friendship that develops between Granny and Savannah's mother-in-law is amusing, and the pair make for a quirky investigative team. I can't wait to read G.A. McKevett's next mystery!
I didn’t realize when I starting reading this book that it was the latest in a long series of Savannah Reid mysteries. It was the first one that I read and I found it both fun and an engaging mystery. I have since found out that Savannah is a plus-size detective. While the book mentions her curves and her enjoyment of food, it doesn’t stress her size at all.
There is a group of individuals who make up the detective agency as well as Savannah’s husband, Dirk, who is a police detective and who was Savannah’s partner in prior years. Each of the characters has a distinct personality and apart from Savannah (who is quite sassy), my favorite is her Granny.
The whole group is on an Alaskan tour as part of a job. The job is to keep a famous author safe from threats that she has received. When they fail, they are left with solving the case – which they do using legal and slightly less than legal means.
I enjoyed the book and will certainly want to read more. While there is an obvious long history between the characters built in prior books, I found it easy to pick up the story and to enjoy the mystery as it unfolded to its slightly twisted end.
I was provided a digital advance reader copy of this book by the publisher via Netgalley.
Entertaining cruise to Alaska. Clever cozy mystery. Sweet and many not so sweet characters. The dialog between husband and wife is amusing. The ending made me shed a tear. Lots of pithy statements throughout. Good advice for all.
I loved this book! I love all of G.A. McKevetts books and this one did not disappoint! The mystery was good and I was surprised at the ending! Can't wait to read the next one and hear more about what's going on in their lives!
I love this series more and more with each book! I love reading about Savannah, Dirk, her family, and the rest of the gang. Each book has been unique and interesting, never the same story. This is an amazing thing with as many books out in the series. Once I started to read this book, I couldn't put it down until I had it done. I loved the cruise angle in this story and how the gang all had to work together. If you love great mysteries this series is definitely one you want to pick up! I don't want to give too many details so not give away anything with this book.
I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy of this book provided by NetGalley.
I love this series! That said, I don't think you need to have read the earlier books to enjoy this one. Savannah Reid has a fiesty nature and an excellent sense of humor. McKevett has done a nice job with the latest installment- loved the Alaskan cruise aspect as well as the mystery with Natasha. Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC. Let's face it- this is an easy read that will take your mind off your day and make you chuckle.
Wow, just when I think that this series couldn't get any better, the next book is published and it is does get better.
I love 'watching' the way the relationship between Savannah and Dirk continues to grow after they are married. Also the dynamics of the family are changing a bit more since Granny moved the California.
This is another great mystery with twists and turns that kept me reading long into the night . I also liked the secondary story about their time in Alaska. Alaska is beautiful but rugged state and that was captured well in the book. I don't want to include any spoilers so I'll just say that the other story lines (beyond the mystery) were another reason that I couldn't put the book down.
I can't believe that it will be a year before we see Savannah and the Moonlight Magnolia group again....
Thank you for allowing me to review.
I am a huge fan of this series. I love the characters in the Moonlight Magnolia detective agency and their interactions. I love that Savannah is plus sized and isn’t afraid to eat. I especially love watching the grumpy, not a people person, curmudgeon that is Dirk be so sweet to his wife.
The gang is hired to protect Natasha Van Cleef, a famous author, and Savannah’s favorite, who has been receiving threatening letters. This protection takes them on an Alaskan cruise, which just happens to be on Granny and Savannah’s bucket list. The plot and storyline didn’t flow as well as it usually does and was predictable.
We did get to see a bit more of John and Ryan than in the last few books. These books are worth the read for the close-knit group and their bantering. While this one is not a favorite, I look forward to the next book!
I voluntarily reviewed and ARC provided by NetGalley.
My rating: 3 of 5 stars. I liked it.
Book 22 in the series. Do yourself a favor and start at book 1. You can start here, and you won't be lost, but you'll miss out on a lot of fun!
I love Savannah. She's a plus-sized gal, and she doesn't care one bit what anyone else thinks. There's no body shaming here!
The whole crazy cast of character just adds to the fun. This time around they combine business with pleasure as Savannah's favorite author hires her to protect her, on a cruise. It was a nice, light read, if a little predictable.
This was my first time reading a Savannah Reid Mystery. I found this book better than average. It had a decent plot, good character development, and interesting settings. Unfortunately, it seemed a bit chopped up. I could not get a good sense of the whole team, especially while they were on the ship. While the title refers to being on a ship, I expected a good deal of the book to actually take place there. The real action doesn't seem to start until they got OFF the boat in Alaska. I also found that the characters were rather amusing, until close to the end, when it became a serious drama. I didn't guess who the killer was, and certainly would not tell you, but if you are a fan of Savannah Reid and her detective agency, I do think you will enjoy this book as you know the characters well. I will certainly look for more books in this series to get to know them better. I would recommend, and have recommended this book to my friends.
The Moonlight Magnolia Detective Agency (plus Granny) are hired to go on an Alaskan cruise to protect famous author, Natasha Van Cleef. Savannah Reid's favorite mystery author has received a death threat right before a cruise that features guests working with Mrs. Van Cleef. However, just because Natasha went to great expense to bring the group on board doesn't mean she actually listens to them or is pleased with their process. On the very first morning of the cruise, Natasha gives strict orders to be left alone until noon. By the time Savannah and Dirk check on her, she and her husband are missing.
At this point the action picks up, but after a slow start to the book, it doesn't have the excitement level I have come to expect from McKevett's series. There was a lot of chasing in circles in an disorganized attempt to find the missing couple. Of course there were many twists and turns that had mixed results. But the book didn't have me turning the pages as anxiously as most of McKevett's others.
One thing I did appreciate about the book was the humor that permeated most of the story. Unexpectedly, one was a prayer from Granny before she went to talk to an unpleasant man (Frank Bellissimo) who is an enforcer for the Los Angeles syndicate. She prayed,
"Dear Lord, we're embarking on a harrowing mission right now. We're putting our lives on the line for Truth and Justice and the American way... If that oversized peckerwood should start to act up, would you please help kick his rear end into next Thursday? Amen."
For a moment I thought octogenarian Granny Reid had joined the Justice League of America!
Savannah's humor comes through with her southern sayings and mannerisms, and none better than this assessment of her team when considering who should talk to Bellissimo.
"...We have Dirk, who has the people skills of a badger, a guy who nearly flunked Negotiation Class, and a couple of feds, whom a mobster could smell a mile off."
Countless other funny quips helped diffuse disappointments I had with other aspects of the story.
Bottom line? I like the series and was glad I read the book. While there were funny parts, excitement, and surprises, it just wasn't a favorite.
This is the 22nd installation in a series, and I haven't previously read any of the books, however that did not stop me from really enjoying this story. The mystery is full of fun characters who spring off the page and also clearly love one another - this is a unique experience in a mystery series - and I enjoyed it. This is a fun, sweet, funny mystery novel.
