Johnson presents a vivid tale, though hardly new, of love, betrayal, and vapid adultery. Infidelity, mistresses, and revenge is a time-tested theme. From Flaubert’s Madame Bovary, Tolstoy’s Anna Karenina, to Updike’s Couples, the deep insights into adulterous behavior and its consequences have graced library shelves for decades. Yet, Johnson, in this re-released work, adds the much needed layer to an age-old dilemma. With completely developed characters and a multi-layered storyline, this novel is highly engaging until the very end.
The story is entirely plot-driven by the interaction of the main characters and the characterization of adultery as the antagonist. Each character's actions are completely understood, as the reader becomes acquainted with their world.
Donathan and Sydney have what most people would think, a perfect relationship. Donathan is known as the "Sex Doctor" and is good at what he does. Sydney is a medical doctor who stays busy. Donathan and Sydney have always supported each others career goals and their love for one another is beyond your wildest dreams. They both meet interesting people in their line of work.
Donathan has an encounter with a stranger that has an agenda. This encounter turns Donathan and Sydney's home life upside down. Will Donathan and Sydney be able to survive this strangers agenda, or will they loose everything? This was a good read and intriguing. I am anxiously awaiting the sequel to see what happens.
2.5 stars.
*sigh* I am a bit disappointed in this book. I am a big fan of this author but this book was just not there for me. We have a group of friends that all have secrets. Yeah their secrets are that they are all lying, two faced, cheating idiots. Over and over the men justify what they do when their wife's are not around and then the women deal with it cause "this is what a man does". What crap is that. I didn't feel that any of the women had any type of back bone at all. Joi, maybe towards the end started growing one.
Then the ending. After reading about how 5 of them try to cover up one thing after another the story leaves you hanging. There is not necessarily a cliff hanger but the story is just not finished. I have not yet decided if I will read the second book. I have a pretty good idea where the rest of the story is going. I just didn't like any of the characters. Well, I take that back, I liked the nosy neighbor Barbara.
Dangerous Consequences is the perfect title for this book. Every character at some point is forced to come to grips with the results of their actions. Donathan James, a psychologist, is known on his radio show as the "Sex Doctor", where he gives out advice to listeners. Of course his local celebrity status and the subject matter he discusses come along with a certain amount of extra attention from women, and now one of them has turned into a stalker. She is able to get him into a compromising position and begin blackmailing him, all of which he tries to shut down before his wife Sydney, a pediatric neurosurgeon (how stressful is THAT job?) finds out.
I admit that I wasn't sure at first that I would like this romantic thriller, but the great writing sucked me in. The resulting twists and turns weren't thrown at you, but eased into the story in a very believable way. Characters who normally appear in books like this aren't usually written as complex and faceted as Johnson does here. I was constantly re-evaluating the categories that I had placed them in as I read. The subplots featuring Donathan and Sydney's friends and family fit well into the ongoing narrative.
Books with cliffhangers are usually off-limits to me. I don't like feeling obligated to read further just in case the initial book isn't good. Not the case here. Dangerous Consequences tied up a loose end nicely while leaving the others dangling in an interesting enough way to get me to come back.
I felt like there was great potential with this story. There were a few things I felt it was lacking. Initially the story was going good and then about 30% in it seemed to lack cohesiveness. I would still give this author a try in the future.
I started this book @ 6 pm and finished it in one night. Yes, it is that good. Book about couples and various things going on in their relationships. But, the main 2 characters take center stage. Throw in one crazy stalker and all I can say is fasten your seatbelt, you are in for a good and bumpy ride. Lol. There is also one busy body neighbor in the mix also. This book is very well written and the characters are well developed. Storyline is believable, not overly dramatic. The ending seems like there will be a part 2. All I can say is "I need it now"!!! Need to see what happens with Lois. Thank you NetGalley, the author and the publisher for the advanced copy of this book in return for my honest review.
