Tortoise doesn't like winter so he is going down for a winter nap. Overtime he is about to fall asleep he is awoken. Robin is singing loudly. Rabbit is making an ice sculpture. Squirrel is having a snowball fight. And Beaver chops down the tree he is sleeping in. Each time they ask if he would like to join them and he declines every time. "Tortoises don't like winter...They just don't" When he finally finds the perfect place to sleep it turns out to be a sled and he goes down a hill and skates across a pond. He loves it so much that he discovers that he does like inter after all.
I think that this book was super cute. The illustrations were fun and pretty. I liked how he was grumpy and in the end had some fun. This teaches children that they don't know if they will enjoy something unless they try it out.

I received this ARC from Netgalley for an honest review.
This is a great book about the tortoise who is ready to settle down for his long and quiet winter's nap. One by one his friends interrupt his sleeping and attempt to persuade him. Eventually, he gives in and joins all the fun. Cute book, great illustrations, an all around a great picture book.
Great book to use in a hibernation storytime. Wonderful illustrations that follow the texts of the story. Lovable characters.
Perfect for story time & winter months! Great illustrations to go along with the whimsical tale.
An excellent book full of humor and spirit that I will reference in the future.
Absolutely adorable! The illustrations are sweet and colorful while the story lends itself to so much potential for sound effects during story time!
This really an adorable story for the little ones. I would say ages 1 to 6. The pictures in the book are awesome. They really grab the kids attention. It is a very short story great for a bedtime story or just a few minutes of time with your child.
The story is about Tortoise. It is winter time and Tortoise just wants to nap until Spring. Every time he thinks he has found a nice comfy spot the other forest animals are close by making a lot of noise. So poor Tortoise packs his stuff and moves to another place just to be awoken again by more forest animals playing. Tortoise finds what he thinks is a perfect spot. It just happens to be a sled at the top of a hill. By the time Tortoise's ride to the bottom of the hill is over he is no longer sleepy and decides he loves winter.
Like the story. Beautiful illistrations. Good book to read with kids. Highly recommend!
We really loved reading this book. It was a fun and vivid picture book giving my little reader lots to

Tortoise is so ready for his winter sleep. He is dozy and groggy and just wants to crawl into his bed and wake up in the Spring. He hates winter. Just as he drifts away into his coveted sleep he hears, "Chirp chirp, chirp!" Who in the world could be disturbing his Feng Shui? It's Robin wondering if he'd like to join the singing class."
"No", grumbled Tortoise. "I was trying to sleep. Tortoises don't like winter."
He tries over and over to close his eyes and sink into heavenly bliss but is distracted by Rabbit who wants him to come and make ice sculptures with him, Squirrel wants him to partner in a snowball fight, and Beaver who is loud and pounding out creations at his construction site is just simply annoying. After each disruption poor tortoise takes his belongings and slowly plods off to a new location hoping beyond hope to find a quiet space where he can finally hibernate in glorious silence.
Do you think he can succeed or will extenuating circumstances draw him into an active winter engaging with his friends and maybe.... just maybe.... enjoying himself and enjoying winter too.
The illustrations are just amazing. They are crisp, full of detail, action and expression. The story is short and simple and young readers can handle reading it on their own but it is much more fun sharing it at bedtime. I highly, highly recommend this book.
Like turtle, I am not a fan of winter. Many students are though. Great read aloud book to talk about differences and also realize the good in winter.
Feat your eyes on this beautifully written story with vibrant illustrations about a Tortoise who just wants to hibernate through winter. After his nap is continuously interrupted, he moves through the pages encountering various new characters while trying to find a new space to sleep. Reminiscent of Bear Stays Up by Karma Wilson and a great companion to Too Many Carrots by Katy Hudson

One of the most attractive children's picture books I've seen in a while. Cute story and gorgeous illustrations. The cover represents the quality of the illustrations. Love it!
It's a simple story of a tortoise who just wants to hibernate and take a LONG, not a LOUD, winter's nap. Is that too much to ask?
Apparently so! He is interrupted with invitations to sing-alongs, snowball fights and all kinds of winter play. But he's determined to find a spot and keeps trudging along and finding new spots.
[ My Goodreads review includes an illustration from the book. ]
Eventually, he wanders somewhere that causes him to slip and slide a bit and experience a bit more of winter than he intended. Good fun!
Just beautiful! Thanks to NetGalley and Capstone Publishing for the preview copy from which I've pinched these delightful illustrations.
All Tortoise wants to do this winter is snuggle up and cozy down for his winter nap. After all, Tortoise's don't like the winter, because they just don't! All the other forest animals have a different idea when winter comes and getting to take a nap prove's difficult for Tortoise.
My son and I loved this book. Super cute and the illustrations were adorable!
This was a cute little book, which would do well for read aloud and early readers. The illustrations were cute, and the story was engaging. This book could do well for teaching about which animals hibernate and which ones do not. I will recommend this book for education majors at my library.
This book was given to me by Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
This book makes you go awwweeeeee. Tortoise does not like winter. He just wants to settle down and sleep, but others keep trying to bring him out of his shell. Maybe, just maybe he can learn to like a cold, snowy, freezing winter.

A Loud Winter’s Nap, written and illustrated by Katy Hudson, is a solidly told and charmingly illustrated story about a tortoise’s travails in trying to find a quiet spot to hibernate. I had some issues with the narrative, but was won over by the cheery, quirky illustrations.
Even before the text part of the story begins, we get a sense of the visual charm of the book with the opening few pages offering up a collage-like collection of items and smaller texts: a teddy bear, a carrot from rabbit (“in case you get puckish”), a calendar with most of the days in November marked off as “Sleep,” a packet of chamomile tea, and a Tortoise Hibernation guide, “Containing Practical Tips for Cozy Bed Making.” The text opens with “Tortoise had just snuggled in for his long winter nap when . . . “ and soon we see poor sleepy Tortoise suffer through a series of interruptions: Robin is having a singing class, Rabbit is making ice sculptures of the woodland animals (including one of Tortoise), Squirrel is having a snowball fight, and Beaver is making sleds. Each time he is asked to join in an activity, he replies “Tortoises don’t like winter.” When questioned as to why, his response is simply, “They just don’t.”
After his resting tree (he uses a ladder to climb it) is knocked down, he finally find what he thinks is a nice flat piece of wood to make his bed on, but it turns out to be one of Beaver’s sleds and soon Tortoise is flying down the hill and then onto the frozen pond. To his surprise, it was all quite fun, and so “Tortoise skated, slid, and spun with friends late into the night.”
The repetitive nature of the text makes for a good read-aloud book, or even an early read-to-myself one as young children (pre-readers and early readers) can anticipate Tortoise’s responses. I would have liked more of a sense textually of what Tortoise finds so unlikable about winter, and the shift at the end is a little abrupt; I wish we had spent more time textually and visually with this new winter-enjoying Tortoise, but it will be a nice little twist for young readers.
The text is mostly serviceable, simple and clear throughout. The illustrations though greatly enhance the charm of the story, especially in their small details such as little signs and the like. Children will easily follow the text, enjoy its respective nature, but will I think really engage with the pictures. A nice little winter story that could actually have gone a little longer.
A Loud Winter's Nap is a charming children's book written and illustrated by Katy Hudson.
Within thirty-two pages, this book focuses on Tortoise and his desire to skip winter by taking a nap. However, his friends continue to interrupt, until a misadventure causes Tortoise to realize that winter is fun!
A Loud Winter's Nap is a delightful easy-to-read picture book with lovely illustrations. It's geared toward young children, particularly ages three to five. Highly recommend this adorable children's book.
Note: I received this book from NetGalley, which is a program designed for bloggers to write book reviews in exchange for books, yet the opinions expressed in this review are my own.
Tortoise is grumpy and old, all he wants to do is find somewhere to nap through the winter but everywhere he goes he keeps getting interrupted, despite his 'DO NOT DISTURB (until spring)' sign. The book demonstrates problem solving as Tortoise tries to find a quiet place to sleep, perseverance as he doesn't give up and fun narrative with lots of 'Thuds' 'Splats' 'Pat's' 'Duhhhhs' 'Bounces' and 'Kerppllluunnks!!'
Most of the words are relatively easy for the young reader to recognise especially combined with a readable font.
The front end page is full of little treasures such as a calendar with sleep written on it for winter months, a winter nap list to do and a postcard from bird to Tortoise just to name a few. It is a little treasure trove of information before the book even starts.
The illustrations are beautifully done and the faces that Tortoise pulls are funny with his eyes being the most expressive of all. The snowy pictures actually made me feel like it is a cold winter.
It s a lovely book that will be sure to delight many readers.
Tortoise wants to sleep during the winter. He keeps saying tortoises don't like winter. (Turtles actually do hibernate, but underground in muddy banks not trees). Every place he finds to sleep, he is disturbed by one if his friends and asked to participate in some type of winter activity. Tortoise is not happy about this and he keeps looking for a quiet place to nap. When he accidentally ends up on a sled going down a hill, he realizes how much fun it is and decides that some tortoises like winter. This is a cute, humorous story that little ones will enjoy. It touches on friendship as well as all the fun things you can do in the winter. I loved the illustrations. All of tortoise's "beds" are drawn in a fun way. I love his sign that appears in each picture. The other animals are drawn having fun and with great facial expressions. This is a great book for a kindergarten classroom or home library.
