Sandwiches is part infographic guide to the history and fun facts of food you happen to find between two slices of bread and part cookbook. The book is divided into five sections, from easiest to assemble at level one to sandwiches that require some prep work in level five. Kitchen safety instructions are provided as you go along with ideas of ingredients to swap out in various sandwiches or dares to try some more out there ingredients on a select few sandwiches for the brave.
Whether you’re hungry for knowledge or hungry for a meal, this is a fantastic book to satisfy those cravings. There’s a vast array of sandwiches presented, from ol’ classics to the more exotic and obscure, and cover just about all the eating times from meal to snack to tea time to dessert. And if you aren’t careful you may learn a thing or two about the food you eat along the way. I really loved the infographics that introduce each sandwich and how they provide interesting facts about brand name versions of the sandwich to likely origins to special days when the sandwich is celebrated or world records set. A fascinating and tasty book. Recommended for just about anyone who likes sandwiches or food facts. I’ll have to hunt down a copy of this when it comes out for our library.
I have a 9 and 10 year old who have expressed interest in learning how to cook and bake. I've been gathering cookbooks for them, and allowing them to each pick one and make it for the family to try and eat. This book is one of those that I know they'll be referencing back to a lot. They liked the pictures, and the tips. It's fun to learn new things, for me as well. They liked the options that are given, especially if it's something that would've never thought of. The recipes aren't for only simple deli sandwiches, there are also treats, and recipes that can go for as snack, for lunch, even for dinner. There are great options for everyone. We are a sandwich loving family, as it's a quick and easy meal to make. There's already pages marked with post-its and grocery list written up. The amount of recipes they've marked means we will be having some great sandwiches to try for the next few months.
If you like eat or make sandwiches, this is the book for you or for those, who you would like to make sandwiches with. It's a nice book that might be a present for a whole family or someone special. The book provides with creative ideas on how to build your sandwich. Enjoy!
This cook book is fantastic! The recipes are all beautifully illustrated and this makes it super easy to follow. They had a lot of simple, well known sandwich recipes, like PB&J, but they had historical background information and tips on how to put a twist on them. I look forward to trying out a bunch of the recipes in this book.
What a delightful book! Alison Deering has released a cookbook, Sandwiches!: More Than You've Ever Wanted to Know About Making and Eating America's Favorite Food, that has everything kids (and culinary challenged adults) need to make a hearty and delicious sandwich meal. While this book is aimed at kids, adults will find that it has great sandwich ideas and information that appeals to them too.
For this book, Deering has teamed up with art director, Bob Lentz, who has previously designed and illustrated several children’s books. He has certainly outdone himself here, and his illustrations will have great appeal to everyone. Due to his excellent illustrations, this book is colorful and fun.
In a time when many kids subsist on fast food, frozen dinners, and pure junk, here is a book that actually shows them how to make a simple sandwich. The book has charming illustrations that show step-by-step how to make mouthwatering sandwiches, as well as simple dressings and toppings. There is a good variety of sandwiches that will appeal to not only kids, but also adults.
One of the best parts of this book is that Deering gives the history of many of the sandwiches. The trivia is fun, and who knows, maybe that information will prove useful somewhere down the road. Kids will be able to not only make a fabulous sandwich, but also speak intelligently about it.
If there’s a child between the ages of 9 and 13 in your life, this fun book will make a great gift. If not, adults may also want to add it to their cookbook collection for great, easy sandwich ideas and the entertaining trivia.
Special thanks to NetGalley for supplying a review copy of this book.
This book is awesome. I love how the book is broken up into skill levels. From skill 1 which are easy sandwiches like ham and cheese and PB&J to skill 5 which are more on the gourmet scale like Italian Beef. Even if you are skill 5 you can learn new recipes from the other skill levels. There are also tons of tips and tricks throughout the book. Like with the fish sandwich it tells you who and when it was invented, the number of Fish sandwiches sold by McDonald's the first month it was on the menu and things like that. The books shows you the ingredients of each sandwich and how to put it together. it also give tutorials like when you start level 4 it gives you a stove tutorial. The book seems to be written to and for older Children say 10 to 13 but as an adult I fund several delicious recipes.
Deering's work is nothing short of a delight. With the help of the bright and lively illustrations of Bob Lentz, she takes readers both across the United States and globe-hopping to help show just how far and delicious a range that the humble sandwich carries through many of its plentiful forms. The only possible difficulty one will encounter reading this unique cookbook will be the numerous that might occur to consider maybe putting the book aside for just a few minutes in order to make a trip to the kitchen and throw together one of the many classic recipes that the author offers up.
Great book. Could do with separating out sweet and savory sandwiches.
Couple of mistakes - bologna is called luncheon meat in the UK. The Brits don't have pickle in their toasted cheese sandwich - pickle is reserved for a normal cheese and pickle sandwich.
A bright, happy and colorful collection of sandwich recipes - some sound interesting, others sound kind of "eeeh," but now I absolutely must have some Bahn Mi. With a reuben and an epic grilled cheese with like, nine kinds of cheeses...
Yeah, a book about making sandwiches. Why do you want to not only read this book, but have it around. Because, believe it or not, there are probably a lot of sandwiches out there that you have never tried, or never heard of. Of course, the usual ones are in here, such as grilled cheese, and peanut butter and jelly, but you will find ones you have not heard of there as well, such as banh mi and apple pie.
This appears to be written for kids, and is bright and colorful, and very, very easy to follow. This could be given to a kid, or an adult. The illustrations are very infograpaphic looking, and make it extremely easy to see what you are supposed to do, and how to do it.
Good cookbooks for kids, ones that make did want to make things, and continue to make things are a joy to have. I had two or three of those when my daughter was young, and she learned to make favorites, and enjoyed doing so. To create, to make things that are good to eat, for oneself, or for the family is very important to growing up and being independent. This book is a joy, and other than one typo, I rate this a five star all the way.
Thanks to Netgalley for making this book available for an honest review.
I received this book from Netgalley in exchange of an honest review.
Well, this was sure a lot of fun to read. Though I do wonder who would eat these sandwiches as breakfast or lunch. Given how some of them have a ton of ingredients... I think I would eat them as dinner, and only one sandwich, because some of them are a full course.
I loved how the book is split up in various sections. From easy, just slap some food and condiments on a sandwich, to full cooking (meat and other stuff) and preparing (make your own salads). This way you can either build up, or you can just start at your level.
It is truly a kids book given all the: Ask an adult for help, or be sure to have adult permission. :P Without that added this book can easily also be for adults.
The book is visually very pleasing to the eyes, I just love the illustrations. The book shows us how to make those sandwiches in a fun way. By showing the different layers in a sandwich with hints, tips, facts, but also with alternatives for various things so you can make a sandwich vegetarian or more for a meat eater.
Later on we also have parts explaining how to make certain things, and it is done in the same way as the sandwiches are split up.
Then there are dares (though I am really not going to try some of them, while I am for adventurous eating at times I don't want to upset my stomach).
Each sandwich is introduced with a giant illustration of it, with some introduction, facts, country/state of origin, and much more.
There are also timelines, often based on various sandwiches, but also on sandwiches in general.
All in all, a really beautiful sandwich cookbook with lots of facts, information, and gorgeous illustrations. I would recommend this one!
Sandwiches!: More Than You've Ever Wanted to Know about Making and Eating America's Favorite Food is a sandwich making cookbook for middle grade kids.
The book contains recipes for over 50 different sandwiches including wraps, subs, and bagels. Just what is a sandwich, tools used, and use of equipment including the oven and panini press is covered. The book even explains the differences in knives.
One of my favorite elements in the book is the use of history, trivia and facts pertaining to each sandwich. There's so much to learn here in an entertaining way. The instructions for each sandwich are easy to follow and include side food options for each. I especially appreciated the substitutions that are included for different dressings, cheeses, and condiments. Substitutions are even given for people who have allergies.
This is a great book for kids to gain confidence in making meals for themselves. All the recipes are easy with only a few possibly needing adult supervision. This would be a nice addition to a cookbook collection. I'm certainly adding it! So far, our favorite is the chicken and waffles sandwich. Yummy!

Excellent resource for the age range. Young foodies will love the pictures as much as the recipes. Sandwiches covers just about every type and style of sandwich there is and provides very clear instructions along with tips so young people to follow along with very little room for error.
